Chapter 2: Aphenphosmphobia
I woke up without having any episodes as I felt a little bit better about myself. I was able to do everything myself, excited to open the door before flinching at the man.
"Oh, hello (L/n)-san-wait what?" Midoriya stood dumbfounded as he reread the crumpled up paper. "Is (L/n) Davis your brother?"
"Yes-wait are you the one that's supposed to be checking up on me?" I asked as he slowly began to smile.
"This is great! I wanted to see you again but didn't know how at first—but now I can!" I laughed a bit at his excitement as he started mumbling about my brother. "S-Sorry if I'm talking too much, it's a habit I can't break after years."
"No, it's fine. So what are you here for?" I asked him as he stuffed the crumpled paper back into his pocket.
"Just wanted to officially meet you, seeing as your brother chose a pro hero himself to check up on you." He explained as I gave a small laugh. "He was super adamant on me checking on you, it was even the first time he's ever asked me for a favor so I couldn't say no."
"That sounds like Davis." I agreed, laughing a bit with Midoriya. "So, is there anything else?"
"A-Actually I'm supposed to take you out to see the city today, courtesy of your mother and Davis." My jaw dropped, having a feeling he wasn't lying in the slightest.
"Of course those two would ask something like that, dear lord," I mumbled to myself before facing him. "Alright, let's go while it's still bright out then."
He gave me a huge smile as I walked out and closed the door behind me. "Shall we?"
We ended up in a shopping mall as I walked a bit closer to Midoriya to avoid the people. He was a lot bigger than me, so he easily got me through the crowds.
"Wanna go to an arcade?" He asked with a sparkle in his eyes as I couldn't say no.
The air was a bit stuffy but clean as we made our way past the different games and machines. I stopped in my tracks seeing a giant derpy (f/a) plushie in one of the crane games.
"So you want that?" I flinched, turning to see Midoriya as he pushed up his sleeves, walking up to the game.
"It's not a big deal Midoriya-san, I just liked how it looked, I don't need it." I tried to convince him to leave it alone as he didn't budge once.
"Nope, I've made up my mind, I'm getting you the plushie." I sighed, not knowing I had a small grin on my face.
We stood there for about 10 minutes, wasting tons of coins as Midoriya looked a bit deflated like a balloon. "I told you it's not a big deal, I promise it's fine."
He snapped his head up to meet my eyes as he looked determined all over again. "No, just because it's not a big deal to you, doesn't mean it's not a big deal to me!"
I watched in a bit of awe as he kept trying 3 more times before getting it on the fourth time. "No way!"
He held up the plushie in triumph while tears streamed down his cheeks. "I DID IT!!"
I laughed a bit at his silliness, clapping as he bowed a few times.
"And I believe this is yours." He handed me the plushie as I took it, realizing it's a lot bigger than it looked in the machine. "D-Do you want me to hold it until you get home?"
"Thanks, Midoriya-san." I thanked him as he smiled, scratching his cheek. "Wanna go to a cafe? My treat."
"Oh, sure!" As we sat at the cafe and ate, he told me crazy stories of his high school friends and experiences as he became a pro hero.
"Wait, so you're telling me you were quirkless, then ate some hair from a pro hero, and then became one from the DNA of the hair? Now that sounds insane." I clarified as he laughed.
"Now when you say it like that, it does sound a bit insane doesn't it?"
"It's completely insane!" I nearly yelled at him, laughing at his shocked face.
"Well, it's getting late, we should head home." I stopped laughing, nodding at his statement as we packed a few cakes to take with us.
"Excuse me, miss." I stiffened up at the foreign voice, looking at Midoriya as he noticed my unease.
"May I help you?" Midoriya asked for me as I saw him holding a camera and notepad.
"Ah, I was just going to ask what her relationship with the famous pro hero Deku is." The reporter backed up a bit before focusing on me as I finally pulled myself to look at him. He looked like a student that was barely in college.
"Why do I have to feel entitled to tell the media about my life? I'm not going to say anything." I stood up for myself, feeling confident as Midoriya smiled.
"You heard the miss, thank you." The reporter scurried away as I let out a huge breath. "You're amazing."
"What's with the sudden compliment?" I teased him a bit before standing up and grabbing my bag.
"Ready then?" We walked out of the cafe, enjoying the light breeze as we walked to my house.
"Umm, thank you for taking me out Midoriya-san, it was a lot of fun I haven't had in a while." He helped me put the cake away and gave me the plushie as I thanked him.
"Just call me Midoriya, we're nearly the same age! And don't worry about it, just text or call me anytime you need something, alright?" I nodded, waving as he left the apartment.
A few minutes later I heard a knock on the door. "Maybe he forgot something?"
I stood up, opening the door to see the reporter from the cafe as he smiled. "Hello again, I thought now would be a good time to ask you some questions seeing as you're not doing anything."
I reached for my phone, screaming as he shoved me down. I started to crawl away from him, calling my most recent number, my brother.
"Hello? (F/n)? What happened?" I heard his voice on the other end, staring at the reporter as he looked around before walking further towards me.
"Just tell me what you know about the pro hero Deku, that's all I need from you." He reasoned as I glared, knowing my brother would send hell himself.
"Why would I tell you?! I just met the guy yesterday!" I screamed at him, feeling a sting on my cheek.
"Bullshit, tell me what you know!" He grabbed my arm as I thrashed around, scratching his eye. "Bitch!"
He straddled my waist, holding my hands down with one as he touched my stomach with the other. Not hearing the door open and a familiar voice, I screamed, blacking out.
"Test 23, we're testing for Aphenphosmphobia. Go ahead." I sat in a white room, hearing the scientist's sadistic voice on the intercom.
Two men came into the room, dressed in orange as I remembered my mom said those were bad men.
"Hey, little girl." I shivered from their voices as one stood behind me. "If you don't struggle this will be painless."
I screamed as the man behind me grabbed my arms, holding them behind my back. The man in front of me kneeled down to my height, looking straight at me in the eyes with discomfort.
"I'm sorry, but I'd do anything for freedom and money." I felt tears in my eyes as he whispered, putting his hands underneath my dress.
"S-Stop!" I yelled as he closed his eyes, touching my stomach. "I SAID STOP!"
I blacked out for a second, waking up to see the man in front of me with shock written across his face. I turned behind me to see the man that held my hands crushed into the wall without a head on his body.
"And that concludes test 23. Results: positive." I let out a blood-curdling scream, holding my head as the man looked at the wall where father was watching.
"This is fucked! I thought you'd let us go after literally defiling a child!" He screamed at the wall as my screams turned into crying.
"Freedom can also mean death. You should've thought about that before taking the job. A shame really, you had 5 more years but thought this was faster." The man grits his teeth together, kneeling down to my height as I look into his eyes.
"Listen, this place isn't for you. This is worse than a prison, and this is coming from a bad guy. Children should be playing outside and living their lives, not stuck inside some asylum being tested on like animals. Escape, while you still can." I listened to his words, linking pinky fingers with him as I gave him a small smile. "You look way better with a smile, you should do it more."
I stopped smiling, seeing a red dot grow on his chest as he slumped over on his side. "Mister?"
"Take her back to the room," I screamed at the scientist, thrashing around as the bad guy's words stuck with me until my escape.
I sat up, realizing I was in my bed as I tried to calm myself down. It wasn't working as I couldn't breathe, scared he was still there.
"(L/n)?" I flinched, looking up to lock eyes with Midoriya.
I teared up immediately, jumping up to hug him tightly. I felt him freeze upon my touch but slowly eased into it as he wrapped his arms around me.
"Are you alright? Your brother called me saying you were in trouble." I remembered what happened, pulling away from him as I held myself.
"I-Is that reporter still here?" I was uneasy with my question, backing up a bit as Midoriya gingerly held my arms. "D-Did I k-k-kill him...?"
"Don't worry, I turned him into the police. He's just knocked out is all, no injuries." I closed my eyes, calming down from his presence. "...Can I ask about your quirk?"
"Sure..." He turned on the bedroom light, sitting criss-cross on the floor. "...You know you don't need to sit on the floor."
"No, I'm good!" I laughed a bit as he grabbed the plushie and stared at me with sparkles in his eyes.
"Okay... so did my brother say anything about it before?" I asked Midoriya, sitting on my bed facing him.
"He mentioned they have to do with your phobias... oh, shoot!" He looked flustered and bowed as I was dumbfounded. "I touched you without consent! I am so sorry, that was even one of the things your brother told me not to do!"
"Midoriya, in your defense I hugged you first, so I say there's no need to apologize." He sat back down on the floor as I sighed. "Yeah, I have a bunch of phobias, thankfully not all of them, but if one of them happen, I lose control."
"What do you mean?" I heard a pencil scratching and glanced up to see Midoriya writing in a notebook.
"...What are you doing?" He flinched, putting down his pencil.
"I-um... write down quirks I think are cool and try to learn everything about them..." he mumbled quietly as I giggled. "You're not weirded out or anything?"
"No, I think it's cute. I'm guessing it's another habit from your childhood?" He nodded as I smiled. "I'll put it in an example. A guy walks up to me and touches me without consent. Normally people would question him and move away, but I blackout, and when I wake up, he's..."
I trailed off, seeing Midoriya stop writing and stare at me in concern. "He's... what?"
"...dead or injured beyond repair." I finished, squeezing my bedsheets.
Midoriya noticed this, putting his book down and kneeling in front of me. "...can I?"
I hesitated before nodding, watching as he took my hands into his own and lightly squeezed them.
"(L/n), do you feel scared when I do this?" I stared at him before looking down at our hands.
"...Not at all, no."
"Your brother told me that people used you when you were little, by people you thought you could trust. Is this true?" Tears pricked my eyes as I felt like I could tell him anything, and he wouldn't be disgusted nor scared of me.
"Yes..."
"The first time I met you in the park, you looked like a lost puppy. And even after hanging out with you all day and even right now, I know for a fact you're not a murderer, nor a monster. You were raised to think that way." He struck a nerve as I glared at him.
"How do you know?! You've only known me for a day!" I yelled in his face as he didn't flinch, just kept a calm smile the whole time.
"I know because I just do, do I need a reason?" I gave up arguing with him, letting my tears fall. "Now, seeing as I waited 4 hours for you to wake up, and spent another 2 listening to you, I say you owe me."
"What? You could've left!" I protested as he shook his head no.
"And left you in this state by yourself? My mom would kill me knowing I did that to a girl." I huffed as he smiled, giving me the plushie. "So since you owe me, I say I get to come over anytime I want, no matter if you want me here or not."
"What?!"
"Don't fight with me on this, I already made up my mind, plus your brother gave me a spare key." He grinned as I dragged my hands over my face.
"Alright, deal. But my room is off limits if I'm not here." He crossed his heart in agreement. "Now, go home! I can be the cause of you being tired if you have work tomorrow!"
"Okay okay, fine. Another thing." He grabbed my shoulders and kept a firm look in his eyes. "Lean on me for anything you need help with, I'll always be here to protect you and save you."
"Was that a confession?" I joked, seeing him lose composure for a second.
"W-What?! No! I-just- please... I want to protect you." I gave him a smile, patting his head.
"Alright, only if you can. If you can't, don't force yourself to do it, nor protect me by hurting yourself." I negotiated as he had a small pout.
"No promises, but I can do it. Goodnight!" He left the room and the house as I watched him walk away before he was out of sight.
"I can't believe a guy like him was chosen by Davis! Although it was nice when he won the plushie... and he did stay with me until I was okay..." I stared out the window again before hitting myself with the plushie. "Just go to sleep (F/n), you need to find a job tomorrow."
I smelled the plushie, realizing it had the same smell as Midoriya. And before I knew it, I was sleeping soundly without the nightlight even on.
