Open Spaces

Stacy Mathews was petrified. She couldn't move, speak or breath. She began to shake and hyperventilate. Her boyfriend stared at her with questioning eyes. The pair had just landed in the Prairies. Stacy had looked out the window of her plane and that's when she saw it. She looked right and left, up and down. It was everywhere. There was nothing. It was all wide open. Her breathing quickened again and her heart began to thump uncontrollably.

"Babe look at me. What's wrong?" Travis asked his girlfriend. He turned her face towards himself. His eyes searching hers for something. Anything that would explain what was happening to her.

Passengers on the plane started to take notice of her strange behaviour. They had all had a long overnight flight.

"I can't." She said at a whisper. Her eyes were fully dilated. Her breathing, though still erratic, began to slow.

"What can't you do love?" The concern in Travis' voice thick.

Stacy turned her head, looking out the window once again. "Out there" she began before she once again started to hyperventilate.

Travis looked outside and saw nothing. It was a beautiful wide open space. Off in the distance he could see a row of trees. How far away exactly he didn't know. "Stacy there isn't anything out there." He said calmly.

One of the passengers came over to the couple. "I am sorry for intruding. I am a psychiatrist. I believe I know what is wrong." The passenger said.

Travis looked at the man. He was dressed in a pair of shorts and a muscle shirt. A kind smile was on the mans face. "What is wrong with her?" Travis asked.

"I believe she has Agoraphobia. Where are you too from?" The man asked as he calmly took a seat. The other passengers didn't pay the couple any more attention. The plane had landed and they were almost all off. A flight attendant stood silently watching the trio.

"What is Agoraphobia? And we are from Scotland." Travis replied.

"Basically agoraphobia is a fear of wide open spaces." The psychiatrist answered. He was studding Stacy carefully.

"How can we help her?"

The psychiatrist came closer, he leaned down and looked Stacy in the eyes. "You need to close your eyes. Trust your partner. Then we can get you off this plane."

Stacy blinked a couple times then slowly closed her eyes. The psychiatrist stood up. "Take her hand and lead her out carefully. Are these your bags?"

Travis carefully helped Stacy stand. Then he looked at the doctor. "Yeah those are ours" the doctor quietly nodded and carefully picked the bags up. Then he followed the pair off the plane. The flight attendant smiled sadly at the pair. She had seen people with fears before.

"Don't open your eyes baby. I am right here." Travis said. Soon the pair were in the airport. Only then did she open her eyes slowly. Her breathing had calmed and she looked around carefully. "Thank you."
