eight
Richie's first week of school went by fast.
Maybe a little too fast.
Because before he knew it, Friday had come around. And Friday meant the weekend, which meant Richie was finally gonna meet Stan's friends.
All of them.
All together.
What if they didn't like him? What if he opened his big mouth and pissed them off? It wouldn't be the first time he said something stupid at a hundred miles per hour. Richie had met Mike, and he was awesome, but what if that Bill guy thought he was annoying?
From the information he had gathered, Bill was kind of like the group leader. Stan talked about all of his friends, but Bill was the one he seemed to be most fond of. And it was the same Bill who came up with the idea to have a movie night every Friday after Ben's football games. It was like a little tradition.
So as Stan drove Richie and Bev to Bill's house in that beautiful Oldsmobile, he gave them the basic rundown.
"Bill's has had a really bad stutter since his little brother passed away, and he and Mike are on the baseball team. Ben plays football, and we go to his games every Friday but this is their break week for the season, so it's just movie night. Eddie is well... Eddie, and you know Mike." Stan finished turning to glance at Richie in the backseat, who nodded while playing with the threads of his torn jeans.
He sat with a bowl of jello in his lap, watching the way that the moonlight danced on the surface of the blue substance, getting lost in his thoughts. He never had that many friends back in Oregon. He was bullied a lot, by James Dante and his friend that no one seemed to know the name of. They would call him four eyes and beat the crap out of him till he couldn't move. Then there was that other time.
The one, not even Beverly, his sister, knew about.
But that's a story for another day.
They pulled into Bill's driveway, walked up the steps, and time stood still all over again.
This was it, this was gonna determine how Richie's new life in Derry would be.
As Stan knocked on the door, Richie held his breath. Bev must've noticed because she grabbed his hand and squeezed it to settle his nerves. He put on his best smile and at that moment the door swung open, laughter from the house filling the outside air. A boy stood there looking over his shoulder and shouting at someone in the house.
"S-shut t-the fuck u-up Ben!" he laughed, turning to the trio on his porch.
He was tall, almost as tall as Richie, with short auburn hair swept to the side. He had a bright smile on his face with rose-colored cheeks, most likely from laughing too hard.
"S-sorry guys" he laughed "C-come on in" he stepped to the side of the doorway, Stan entering first with the other two following him into the living room. Stan hugged Bill as a greeting, and then pulled away to introduce everyone.
"Bill, meet Richie and Bev. Bev and Richie, meet Bill" Stan said, causing Bill to smile and shake Richie's hand.
"Nice to meet you, Richie," he said turning to Bev and doing the same. At that moment, Mike and some other guy popped out from what seemed to be the kitchen. "Sup my dudes!" he hollered and walked over, giving each of them a hug. Mike pulled away from Richie and took the bowl of jello to the kitchen. The kid that had walked over with Mike reached out his hand to Richie.
"Ben, nice to meetcha," he said with a friendly grin. He was a good looking guy, obviously a heartthrob with his Lederman jacket and great hair. Almost the typical jock, but sweeter. He turned to greet Beverly, and his jaw practically fell on the floor. He spoke up but his mouth was dry, which made Bill snicker.
Richie was eyeing him, not glaring or anything, just keeping an eye on him. Ben must've noticed cause he pulled his hand away quickly and scratched the back of his neck, both of them blushing. Richie had to hold back from laughter, afraid of embarrassing either of them.
"So where's Eddie?" Stan said, causing everyone's attention to focus on him. "He's in Bill's room, his mom called," Mike said, reentering the living room.
"What movie are we gonna watch?" Bev asked.
"We've got Ghostbusters and Back to the Future" Ben held up the cases "Which one should we watch first?"
"Ghostbusters," Richie said "only like one of the greatest movies ever" Mike was just about to interject, but they heard a door slam and footsteps approach, and everyone went quiet. A boy stepped walked out into the entryway of the living room, smoothing out the wrinkles on his pants.
"Sorry guys I was just on the pho-" the boy looked up, perfectly combed hair to go with brown eyes that could kill, freckles adorning his cheeks to match with rose-colored lips. Both Richie and the boy stopped dead in their tracks, looking like they had just seen ghosts.
Well,
shit.
