Chapter I: "The Story of the Rig"
Ten years later...
Malia Jones excitedly ran down the steps of her house once she heard the doorbell go off.
Austin and Moses Urbina y Correa were standing just outside, Moses holding up their Nintendo Switch JoyCon carrier pouch with glee. "Let's do this!" they shouted.
"Yeah!" Malia high-fived them both. "James is upstairs getting ours set up."
"And Carmen?" Austin wondered, referring to a mutual friend named Carmen Wexler, who was new to their town.
"Not coming. Already left for vacation," Malia explained. "She's visiting extended family for Christmas. So we could do siblings vs. siblings, if you're down for that!"
"Hmm," Austin said as a response. "It's interesting how neither of us have heard about her vacation before now..."
"Yeah!" Moses agreed. "It's almost as if there's some sort of...reason why Carmen would tell you before anyone else!"
Their sarcastic, teasing tones slowly became more and more apparent to Malia as they went on. "Her plane landed yesterday. She would've been on airplane mode pretty much all day."
"Sure," Moses replied sarcastically before moving upstairs. Malia groaned and joined him, followed by Austin. Flippant remarks like that after she explained something were always one of her biggest pet peeves, because it said, "You just wasted both of our time because I don't believe you anyway."
When Carmen moved to Twin Township towards the beginning of the school year, Moses, Austin, and James all collectively agreed within weeks that she had a crush on Malia. To their credit, Malia didn't particularly mind the idea of Carmen liking her that way. It's just that she knew she didn't, and their comments only made her more embarrassed about it.
"There you are!" James greeted the neighboring siblings from his bed. "You ready?"
"Yeah, let's do it!" Austin replied with a grin, plopping himself down next to him. Moses sat on their brother's opposite side, and Malia on her brother's opposite side.
"Oh, by the way, James, before I forget," Austin said as he and Moses started pairing their JoyCons with the Joneses' Switch, "I recently found out about a cool new story for your podcast!"
When James and Carmen first met, they quickly found out that they had a shared interest in their town's current events and entertainment scene. They then started a podcast together called Twin Township Today, where they spoke about what was happening in their town and what life was currently like there.
"Wh-what do you mean?" James asked, curiosity peaked.
"Remember that old communication rig that failed to run? The Salazar Rig, I think it was called?" Austin continued.
"I w-was...six, but yeah," James said, a bit sarcastically, but still with a tone that encouraged his friend to continue.
"Apparently, they're gonna try to go for it again," Austin finally revealed.
"Where did you hear that?" Malia asked, surprised.
"One of our dads was asked to report on it," Austin clarified. Antonio Urbina y Correa was a local journalist. "If this works, people in TT will soon be able to message anyone else in town, regardless if they have wi-fi or cell service!"
"Alright...sick! I'll have to talk to Carmen about that later!" James said, beaming. "Anyway, how are your JoyCons coming along?"
"Oh, mine paired, like, two minutes ago," Moses admitted with a sly grin. "I just wanted Austin to finish his thought."
Austin rolled his eyes. "Mine's good, too. But, seriously, compa. The rig is being turned on in a week. It could be huge if it works!"
"I get it!" James emphasized. "I'll mention it to Carmen and s-see if...we can get it in the episode. After I've finished kicking your behind at S-smash Bros for the day!"
"Oh! Then you'll be waiting a long time for that!" Austin replied with a laugh. The other three giggled back as Malia hit the "A" button on the game and selected her file.

On the night the rig was supposed to be turned on, Noelle met up with Jezza and Abraham in the empty plot where the magic was supposed to happen.
"Is everything ready?" she signed.
"Just about," Abraham signed back, as Jezza was busy activating the machine with his powers.
"You remember the plan?" she asked.
"On Jezza's signal, you and I flip both switches at the same time. Quickly, before he runs out of energy."
"Exactly!"
The two of them then moved to either side of the machine and eyed Jezza, who, after another few minutes, gave them both a thumbs-up. They both immediately grabbed hold of their levers, but soon found they were much heavier than they thought they would be.
Suddenly, Noelle's Crisis Alarm began to go off, and so she snuck a look back at her fiancée, who had visibly begun to strain himself, face turning red. Panicked, Noelle let go, and signed, "Abort!"
Both Abraham and Jezza obliged, the latter looking especially relieved to have done so. Just as Abraham finished signing, "What happened?", the machine started spewing out several smoky mini-explosions towards the town.
"To answer your question," Noelle replied after the explosions ceased, "we tried to change history...but I think we just repeated it instead..."
