15: Exchange
The above artwork does not belong to me.
This chapter doesn't have Danny in it, but I'm putting the next one up at the same time as this one for you! Love you all!
Ford's face twisted in concentration as he put a few finishing touches on the boo-merang. "There. This should work now."
Jazz, who had been handing him tools the whole time, jumped eagerly. "Awesome! Let's go find my little brother!"
Ford dragged a hand across his face. He was exhausted, and honestly quite surprised that he had only been out for a few hours after eating that mayonnaise.
He looked over at the twins, who were falling asleep hand-in-hand. Jazz and Tucker didn't look too tired, but they probably stayed up late all the time.
"Jazz, I think we need some sleep. We can look in the morning, okay?"
Jazz's smile faded. "Right, right. I'm sorry, I should be thinking of everyone else, too. I just . . . I'm really worried, you know? Who knows where he went, or . . . or what's happening to him."
Ford nodded. Whoever had the means and motive to capture or kill Danny . . . There was no telling what a person like that would do. "Jazz," he said, "I appreciate your willingness to be patient. We'll go first thing tomorrow."
Jazz shrugged. "Sure."
Ford adjusted his glasses. Since they weren't sure when the Fentons would be coming back tomorrow, he and the twins would have to a rent a hotel room for the night.
He turned to Dipper and Mabel. "Come on, kids. Let's get some sleep."

Doctor Elmer scowled. She'd been having a bad day. A very back day.
More subjects had been announced as failures, and more of her underlings had been punished. She would never admit that it was out of anger that she had recycled them, but the staff had learned to fear her when she got especially bad news. She hated failure, and was determined to never become a laughingstock like Dr. Desmond and his Blockbuster fiasco. She wasn't about to let any superhero clones get out of hand, either. Superboy was a massive issue, and it was all the fault of that bumbling idiot.
The scientist smirked as her eyes grazed the day's reports on her tablet. Speaking of clones . . .
Doctor Elmer tapped a report on one of the stranger creatures she had acquired. A half-human clone. What her other half was, no one was entirely sure, but the common slang term for it was ghost. Of course, ghosts didn't actually exist-- she preferred to call the beings ectoplasmic entities-- but nevertheless, they were certainly interesting. And ecto-human hybrids were even more so.
They'd figured out soon enough that the girl they had captured was a clone, but of who, she wouldn't say, no matter how they tried to make her talk. All they knew was that they were a halfa like her. Their first suspicion had been Danny Phantom, since they look so much alike, but he was male. She was a clone; they couldn't have the exact same DNA.
It wasn't long before the Guys in White somehow caught wind of their activities. Apparently they had placed a tracker on the clone not all that long ago, and were going to break in until they realized who they were up against. The GIW was commonly thought of as a joke, and they were no match for CADMUS. However, they did have a lot more information on ectoplasmic entities than Doctor Elmer's facility, so they had formed a short-term partnership over the clone, feeding each other information.
She intended to terminate their agreement the first chance she got, of course. No sense in keeping a joke like them around if she couldn't gain anything from it.
For now, though, she had to attend a meeting with them. Her heels clicked in the hallway as she walked, stopping before her office door. She strode in and seated herself, smoothing her skirt. "Doctor Elmer" was spelled out in large letters on the plaque on her desk, but there wasn't much else on there. The scientist neatly crossed her legs as she waited for the GIW agents to arrive.
She checked her watch. Three minutes late to a dealing with their business partner. How sloppy.
Finally, two agents, an anxious-looking man and an extremely tall woman, entered the room. They didn't even bother knocking, she thought, forcing herself not to make a face. Elmer would never allow her staff to be this careless.
"Good afternoon," she said pleasantly. "My name is Doctor Elmer." She gestured to the chairs in front of her, smiling tightly. "Please, I invite you to sit."
The agents seated themselves, not even bothering to greet her back. Elmer wasn't sure whether it was the agents' behavior or the tight bun she had forced her ebony hair into that was causing her headache. She repressed the urge to massage her temples. "I understand that the Guys in White would like to make another arrangement between our organizations. What did you have in mind?"
The tall woman spoke first. "We've become concerned."
Doctor Elmer raised her neat brows, unsure of how much more she could take. "How . . . vague."
A look of annoyance crossed the agent's face. "Yes, well, I wasn't finished. We've become concerned about Danny Phantom. You see, he is the most dangerous ghost out there, and our number one priority." She paused dramatically.
"And how does this concern me?"
"Again, I wasn't finished. Phantom disappeared for an entire month recently. He came back, but now he's gone again. Something strange is going on. We need to find out where he is, and we thought you might want to help us."
Elmer struggled to restrain a scowl. "And why would CADMUS be interested in that?"
"Because we can give you something in exchange. We can give you his DNA."
That got the scientist's attention. "That's a decent start," she admitted, "but I'm going to need more than that."
The woman nodded. "We thought you might say that. Seeing as you're so interested in that clone, we figured you might want a little extra. After we're done with Phantom, you can have his body."
That was just too good to be true. "You're getting desperate if you're willing to give up that much." Even though he was supposedly a ghost, she had no doubt that Danny Phantom could die. Real ghosts, the kind that were actually dead, didn't bleed like he did. They didn't get hurt. Well, if actual ghosts existed, they wouldn't.
The agent didn't bother to hide the look on her face. "The GIW aren't interested in the same things that you are, is all. We're a form of law enforcement; we don't spend all day in labs with clipboards and plastic gloves."
Elmer smiled tightly, which only served to unnerve the agent further. "Thank you for that piece of information. And yes, I will aid in the capture of Phantom, so long as you hold up your end of the deal."
The female agent nodded. "Thank you, Doctor Elmer, for your cooperation. I'm sure that you will make something great of CADMUS." She spit out her words sourly. They sounded rehearsed.
"Thank you, agent. CADMUS will certainly achieve many great things under my command."
The two agents left, both of them silent. As soon as the door had closed, Doctor Elmer let out an exasperated sigh. She was glad the deal had been struck, but those GIW agents really were a bunch of idiots.
Oh my gosh, you guys. I can't apologize enough for the unannounced hiatus that Phantom Justice has been on.
That wasn't intentional, I promise you. It was just kind of . . . something that happened. As I said before, the last chapter just kind of wasn't working. Thank you all for reminding me to update, and for not getting too angry at me! You all helped me get my motivation back! Also, special thanks to MakeshiftRiley for PMing me and helping me make a plan to start fresh, and for being there to talk to. You really improved my confidence, as well. You're awesome, Riley! Love ya!
Thank you for sticking with me, and for helping me out, you guys. Reads, votes, and comments mean a lot to a new author, as I'm sure you know. I'm hoping to write an original novel after I finish Phantom Justice, and you guys really give me hope that I can achieve that goal.
Also, Willowmyth thought it would be cool to do a fun fact of the chapter, so I might try it instead of the question of the chapter for a while. Which would you like better? (Of course, feel free to ask me questions any time you like.) Willow also made a gorgeous fan cover for Phantom Falls! Perfect timing, since the one year anniversary of Phantom Falls' completion is coming up this Thanksgiving break! I can't beleive it's been so long. I love the cover, thank you so much!
Love you all! Thank you!
