Chapter Twenty-Nine

                Though I could have helped Steve with more evacuation I had to finish this. It needed to end. I vanished to the Stark tower roof, feeling the gravel on my bare feet again I cringed momentarily. The humming of the machine started to draw me towards it, it was hypnotic but anything that could take control of me was like nails to a chalk board. Natasha walked over to the balcony and grabbed Loki's scepter that was in the middle of the balcony. Looking passed her I saw a broken Loki laying in a pile of rubble. The Tower had been even more destroyed than I had last seen it.

Turning back to the machine, I focused on the energy. If I could stop it I would. No matter the cost. I grabbed the machine to steady myself then shoved my hand through the barrier, ignoring the cuts that formed on my hand. When I went to touch the stone I was sent back with a sharp jolt of power. Rolling back onto my feet I landed on my energized platforms. Racing up again my eyes stared up at the pure blue energy beam. Raising my hand I went to touch the beam once again.

"Jaedyn!" It was Natasha's voice that called my name, stopping me from moving. "I have a better way to close it," I shook my head not wanting to stop doing this, I needed this. I reached again, gripping the stone and started to close it only to be ripped back away from the machine by Nat. I spun around to face her. "Stop. Your not going to be able to handle it."

I knew she was right, I wasn't thinking straight but when I heard Dad yell my name I almost dropped from the energy weight on me. I lifted my hand and aimed at the machine, focusing on it. Only to be shot back with a blast of power.

"Jaedyn!" Dad yelled my name over the coms but it began to fade when I started to hear a sharp scream. Going to cover my ears didn't help as it was inside my head, if it got any worse I thought my ears would bleed. "Romanoff get her away from there, she's gonna get herself killed!" Natasha ordered me to go down to the lower balcony and wait. Knowing that she doesn't ask twice I did as she said and walked down. Looking up at the sky, the beam that I had helped in making it.

"Okay guys I can close it. Can anyone hear me? I can shut down the portal," Nat yelled into the coms, her red hair being blown back by the waves the Tesseract was sending off.

"Do it!" Steve yelled.

"No, wait!" Tony's voice abruptly yelled, cutting off Steve. I was stunned, wondering why he wanted us to wait, though when my eyes searched the sky. Not seeing dad made me even more worried.

"Stark, these guys are still coming." Steve spoke against Tony, his voice obviously exhausted of the battle and wished what we all wanted. For it to be over.

"I got a nuke coming in, it's gonna blow in less than a minute. And I know just where to put it." Tony spoke and I looked down the street to barely see the Iron Man suit flying with a nuke on his shoulder.

​ "Stark, you know that's a one-way trip?" Steve said, I felt my lungs tighten as I watched Iron Man climb higher and higher over the city, gaining speed, suddenly flinging himself through the portal.

"Jaedyn..." My name. That's the last thing he spoke, my name. The Communications died. I wanted to drop to my knees as I felt my body grow numb. I recognized that numbness as I had it before. When he was missing in Afghanistan. Though I didn't drop I still felt heavy, Natasha had stood still an looked up to the portal. We all were hoping for him to just fly back through be completely un-phased that he went through the portal to the other side of space.

"Dad," I uttered under my breath, everything around me had gone quiet.

"Close it," Steve ordered Natasha. She looked down to me and my eyes begged her not to, without hesitation. She pulled the scepter out of the tesseract, turning off the portal.

"No!" I cried out and shot a portal up into the beam above the machine, and jumped through it into the beam. My body under tremendous power and weight that wanted rip me apart. I yelled out but kept my focus on keeping the portal open.

"Jaedyn!" The com yelled at me, Natasha had tried to climb the machine to grab me but she couldn't reach me. The blue beam wasn't as strong as it was with the machine, but I was keeping where it was with whatever I had left. "I can't reach her, she's too high up!" My breath started to grow heavy an so did my eyes. I forced myself to keep my eyes open an dug my nails into my palms. "Jaedyn can you hear me!?" Nat yelled up at me and I barely managed the strength to nod.

I didn't know what the consequences were gonna be from doing this but if I could keep it open for dad to get through I was going to. There was Chitauri still pouring from the portal, that I had created, that I was still keeping open. Remembering the broken letters of Stark tower that had fallen I focused on the ones that had fallen off. Visualizing them floating and then being flung at the Chitauri. I heard the crashing and felt the heat of the explosion as the letters did what I saw them doing.

"Jaedyn, I'm sorry, but you have to stop. Jaedyn stop, enough," I heard Clint speaking calmly to me. I closed my eyes and let out a sob as I dropped from the beam and fell onto the roof. The portal quickly closed then, cutting off all attempt to save my father. I hit the ground of the roof hard and rolled over onto my back. Even though my body was beaten and broke I still managed to see a blurry figure hurdle towards the earth. My vision faded an all I could hear was the voices with the coms and in my head.

"The only reason you hadn't died was because I allowed it. You are my body and I am a part of you... I helped..." My eyes remained closed and I felt a dark wave start to take over me.

"I wonder what it's like to be dead? I hope it's peaceful- like you're floating," My head filled with the memories of the good times of my family. It may be small but it's good. "I hope you don't keep thinking about how you died. Or why," Days in the workshop working on the cars or creating little robots that usually ended up breaking. Nights spent looking over old videos of me as a kid. "Or how it makes no sense," The video of my graduation speech, both high school and college. "The thing about it is," The days where Pepper, Dad, Uncle Rhodey and I had all gone to Venice pier. "It's all so final..."

"Son of a gun!" I heard Steve holler, relieved that something was falling. Still falling. My eyes shot open and I rose my heavy arm. Rubbing my eyes, seeing the Iron man armor not slow down I tried to raise my hand to stop him.

"Help me now..." I begged the other inside of me, but Natasha had rushed to my side and lowered my arm.

"Stop Jaedyn, your too weak," I wanted to raise my hand again. The woman is right, even with my strength, any more exertion could kill us both. Natasha had put her own arm over mine stopping me. I heard a giant roar and saw out of the corner of my eye the Hulk snag dad out of the air, crashing and sliding down the side of a building.

"Dad..." Natasha saw me moving to stand so she assisted me in getting to my feet. Taking a step away from Nat I focused on the energy of Thor's electricity and formed a portal in front of me. I took another step and closed the portal behind me. Someone would have to make sure Loki didn't go anywhere, and Natasha was the person to do so.

Hulk and Dad were laying down and when I saw Hulk throw dad off of his chest, lifeless...

I did my best to get to them. Seeing double I still reached dad. Thor ripped off the helmet dad wore and I saw his eyes closed, he wasn't breathing. I rubbed my eyes an saw Steve's eyes meet mine with a look of sorrow, my heart dropped and so did I, fearing the worst. I grabbed dad's armored hand hoping his grip would tighten on it.

"Lady Stark-" Thor began, but my sharp cry cut him off. The area around me started to cover in a dark blue hue, shaking. Cars started to crumble together and crush together. My head collapsed onto his chest, letting out whimpers and pleas for him to come back. My tears falling now, eyes burning from the dust of the debris. My whole body feels fragile, as if one small touch would break me.

Even when the Hulk yelled in a fury I didn't move, but someone did. Jolting me off his chest dad gasped for air. We all gave him a moment to recover before we spoke. I smiled and did my best to wipe away the tears that fell.

"What the hell? What just happened? Please tell me nobody kissed me?" Dad spoke quickly, his hand reaching mine. I forced a laugh and he gave me a quick wink. He was hurting, had just came back from the dead and was making jokes.

"We won," Steve said, looking up at the clear sky. Sure the city would need help repairing itself, and people would need to be held accountable for their actions but we won.

"Alright. Hey. Alright. Good job guys. Let's not come in tomorrow. Let's just take a day," Dad looked over to me and tried to sit up, I didn't let him. Placing my hand on his chest I made sure he layed there for a bit more. "Have you ever tried Shawarma? There's a Shawarma joint about two blocks form here. I don't know what it is, but I wanna try it," Thor rested his hand on my shoulder and I turned to see him look up at the tower.

"We're not finished yet," I stood up wobbly and gripped onto Thor's arm to steady myself. Dad saw the destruction I had caused and gave me a concerned look. It was as if he was worried for me even though he had just come back from the brink of death, again.

"Then Shawarma after," Dad groaned sitting up, Steve offered him his arm. Which Dad took gracefully almost falling, but got his footing. I picked up the torn off Iron man face mask and tossed it to dad. "You know these cost a lot of money right? I'm not made of money."

"You were just flaunting how you were a billionaire Stark," Steve sassed dad, and we made our way over to the tower. "Jae you think you could get us up there?"

"Possibly, I mean I haven't teleported people before, but I have created portals. It's worth a shot," I said taking a step out in front of the group. I pressed my finger to my com and made sure it was working before I spoke. "Clint where are you?"

"Uhh- Corner of 30th and Lexington, why?" I imagined the street, Old print shop, Penelope's restaurant, and the Dover Street market. I opened my palm in front of me and out shot a blue light expanding it to a portal. Clint almost ran into it, but stopped just before it, giving me a look. "Neat trick. This safe?" I nodded and he stepped through it. "Thanks for the save earlier."

"Your welcome, now come on," I closed it the portal and opened another for Stark tower. Opening it on the balcony, seeing the pieces of the building that had landed on it. "Shall we?" Steve gave me a pat on the back before he hesitantly stepped through the portal.

"Jaedyn," Dad said, catching my attention. I turned to him, the others knowing that we were going to talk. I closed the portal after we all stepped through it. The others stepped inside, to get dad and I privacy. "Just before the battle. On the roof-"

"That wasn't me," I quickly cut him off and took a minute to think about how to explain my situation. "I have this. Other being a part of me now. I think it's the embodiment of the Tesseract inside me," I fiddled with the ends of the hoodie. "She took control of me. Loki used me to amplify the portal and expand it," I took a deep breath and looked up at the sky.

"Jae-"

"Dad, can you just listen before you interrupt me," He nodded an almost grin on his lips. "When we lose someone... When someone dies there gone. Forever and then there is nothing," I took deep breath and wiped a few fallen tears from my face before I looked back into Dad's eyes. "Nothing! That we can do that is gonna bring them back. So I need you to stop doing that, stop dying. Please... Once was enough," He rubbed his eyes, his eyes slightly bloodshot. Knowing he was trying to stop himself from crying.

"This other being inside of you took control over you and said those things?" I gave a short nod and he sighed. "I know I'm not the best father to have, putting you in constant dangerous situations. But I'll do my best not to leave you alone. Only if you do the same, no more sacrificing yourself or being reckless. I can not lose you Jaedyn," I nodded and hugged him, even if it was the armor. He was Iron man, and it's just like another skin for him. "I love you Jaedyn," He kissed the top of my head and I smiled into his chest, the arc reactor almost blinding me.

"I love you too Dad," I moved away from him and he gestured for me to walk inside. Stepping over rubble and broken glass carefully not to get any on my bare feet. I saw the others surrounding a Loki, who was crawling onto the steps, looking terrible. He looked like he had be thrown like a rag doll, beaten and bruised. Dad moved to the side of Clint who was drawing an arrow, the Hulk leaped into the window, causing the ground to shake slightly. He moved behind dad, Natasha stepped over. The scepter in her hands, she knew to be careful with it so she made sure to stand behind Thor in case Loki went to grab it. I moved in front of Thor, seeing how battered Loki was only made me want to throw him around even more. He used me, caused this gift to happen to me, tried to kill my father and friends.

"Jaedyn," I heard Loki say my name, turning to face us all. Seeing just how pissed we all were, Dad aimed his hand at him. Clint pulled the bow string back at Loki. I rose my hand and felt the energy swell. Lifting him off the ground and forcing him into the wall. I bent the broken pieces of metal support beams around his body. Wrapping them around his arms and torso, one started to wrap around his neck. Do it. I saw the look the others were giving me, telling me to stop, bringing me back. My eyes closed and I lowered my hand, taking a step away and looking to the ground. I wove my hand in front of me and he dropped, the beams moving away and falling onto the ground next to him.

"Don't look at me, don't speak to me, don't even think about me. I'm not telepathic but I sure as hell can send you to hell if I want to," I opened my eyes, crossing my arms over my chest. "That's to easy for you though. You'll face justice, just not from me," He knew he was beaten.

"If it's all the same to you. I'll have that drink," I looked over to dad his lip upturned for a moment and the Hulk snorted at him. Thor gripped Loki and lifted him to his feet. As he went to take Loki into custody Natasha came over to me. Her eyes scanning my body I went to take a step back but she shook her head.

"I'm just trying to figure out something," She finally spoke, making me even more nervous.

"What?" She gestured to the scepter then the Tesseract that still remained in the machine. Dr. Erik Selvig was speaking with Steve who had began the process to get the Tesseract into a container to take it with us to Shield. I understood now, she was wondering how I did that. "Your wondering why I am still alive, when all others who touched the Tesseract died. Here I am having inserted myself into the Tesseract's beam," I started to create wisps along the tips of my fingers, looking almost like electricity sparks. "It's hard to explain, but because of whatever Loki did to me. The embodiment of the Tesseract is inside of me and I can control it. Kinda."

"You know that the heads of Shield will not be good with this information you know that right? Especially since you did help Loki, even if it wasn't you," I nodded knowing that, I would have to face consequences.

"I can worry about those in a little bit, We just took down an army of Aliens and a god, can we not celebrate it?" I nudged her with my elbow as I passed her. I heard her sigh but soon she came to meet my steps down to the ground floor where a Shield jet had landed. Out stepped some of the most heavily armed and armored men I had ever seen. They exited in a line and looked to Thor, his faced showed he wasn't going to let his brother go out of his sight and reach. He moved passed the agents and sat Loki down into a chair, setting his hammer Mjölnir onto Loki's lap. Keeping him in place, knowing that only those who are worthy could lift it.

"Agent Stark?" I heard an agent say, looking over to me. I nodded once. "By orders of Shield Headquarters you are hereby under arrest for the crimes of aiding and abetting the war criminal Loki, manslaughter, aggravated assault, and treason." I took a step back to go to hide behind Dad. Dad grabbed me and put me behind him the best he could. The agents seeing him in his Iron Suit intimidated them but they hardened their gaze to me.

"You are not taking my daughter. Get Fury on the phone," Dad's tone meant that he would fight someone if they didn't get Fury down here.

"You can talk to me in person Stark," A set of footsteps stepped down the jet's ramp and over to us. "The charges against Jaedyn are from higher up, though she did assist in the invasion."

"She helped on both sides! She was the one who stopped the Tesseracts beam!" Dad yelled, Steve looked to me a terrified look in my eyes. I didn't want to be arrested, the charges were serious, I could go to jail. Worse I could be in a Shield prison.

"She's the one who made the portal expand, she killed agents and is the cause of a lot of the destruction Stark," Fury explained stepping towards the two of us. Clint and Natasha knew better than to get in the way of Fury and had stepped to the side. The Hulk was no where to be seen, probably because he went to turn back to Banner. Hopefully he was far away, otherwise they could charge him with something as well.

"It wasn't her! Tell him Jaedyn," Dad looked back to me, seeing the look in my eyes. I looked down to the gauntlets I wore, glowing dimly.

"Agent Stark?" Fury looked to me, arching an eyebrow.

"The Tesseract is alive," Fury's eye widened at the those words. "And it took to using my body as a way to move about... What I mean is that I embody the Tesseract, it's abilities of teleporting, creating portals and telekinesis all came from the Tesseract. Side effects is that she is trying to take over my body," I fiddled with the sleeve of the hoodie letting out a forced chuckle to try and lighten the mood. "The crimes I am charged with, were when I wasn't in control."

"That may be so Miss Stark, but until you can prove that. You will be arrested and in Shield's custody," I almost fell over, I was arrested, and I was going to be prosecuted. He took out cuffs from his belt and handed them to an agent. "Come willing Miss Stark. I'd hate for them to use force."

"No!" Dad yelled, putting his hand out, aiming at the agent with the cuffs for both my feet and wrists. "You are not taking my daughter and that is final," I put my hand on dad's arm, lowering it slowly. There was no way I would be able to win in this situation. "Jaedyn... Princess."

"It's okay dad," I shrugged. "I have to face the consequences of my actions, even if they weren't technically mine," I sighed meeting his eyes. "I'll be okay. I'm a Stark," Turning back to Fury I nodded and the agent came towards me. I put my hands in front of me hearing the click of them closing on my wrists. Two sets of cuffs, one being the ones that Shield put on me and the other that allowed me to harness and control my powers. He put them on my feet as well restricting my movements.

"You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand the rights I have just read to you? With these rights in mind, do you wish to speak to me?" The agent recited my rights and I shook my head remaining silent. Dad walked over to me before I started up the jet ramp.

"I'll take care of this princess, I promise," He kissed the top of my head then I was pulled up the ramp. He rose his hand, folding down all but one of his fingers. He rose his pinky finger and I gave a weak smile. I moved my arms with the cuffs, it was uncomfortable but I folded down my fingers doing the same. I was forced to sit on the other side of the jet, facing Loki.

"Sentiment, a chemical defect found in the losing side," His voice was low, sounding defeated. I rose my hand and flicked the air, sending a slight wave of energy to him. Forcing him to slam his head onto the back of the jet, I rolled my eyes. Looking from the others down the ramp who had started to go to another jet back to Thor who still refused to move. The other agents distributed themselves around the jet. A way to intimidate and surround Loki and I. My eyes finally met Fury's eye. Pity, that's what I saw. He moved through the jet and up to the cockpit. I looked to my hands and saw the minor wisps glowing under my skin, the slight glow of my scar. Taking a deep breath I thought about all I had done during the invasion. For both sides, one not my control, not my choice. I closed my palms and muttered to myself.

"But we won..."
