Chapter: Thirty-One

There was a heavy feeling in my stomach that woke me. Sitting up I looked around my room, seeing someone seated in the chair at my desk made me go to grab a weapon. That was before the light turned on, Fury. "Do you make it a habit to break into places while people are sleeping. Or am I just special?" I grumbled moving my feet around and onto the floor.

"Come with me."

"Why? You said," Before I could continue he was already out the door and slowly moving towards the living room. I had no choice but to follow him, grabbing my braces before I did so. "Director," I half whispered to him, he just continued on. Going out to the balcony where a chopper was, dark and had an open door. I watched Nick climb into it and motioned for me to do the same, my head tilted to one side and I sighed. A moment passed before I joined him and the door shut, an my eyes were covered with a black mask. I suddenly had a bad feeling about this, my voiced croaked out. "Fury... Nick, whatever is happening please. Just stop. I'll be good!"

"You're not in trouble Jaedyn. Just be silent and wait for instruction," Fury ordered me and I relaxed for a moment. Sitting straight, I folded my hands and waited. It seemed like we traveled for a good hour an a half. I was motion sick most definite, but I did my best to stabilize myself while we flew. As we started to land I gripped the sides of my chair and was about to teleport out of there but it had hit the ground, safe and sound. "Let's go Jae." Fury said, and gripped my arm. Helping me down off the helicopter.

We walked in silence and there were a bunch of people mumbling around me. A door shut behind me and the blindfold was taken off, my eyes hit with light. After I took a minute to adjust them I noticed Natasha sitting down with her legs crossed, dawning her normal cat suit. "I'll leave you to it agent Romanoff."

"Sir," She then acknowledged me and I crossed my arms over my chest. "Jaedyn."

"Romanoff," I uttered and glanced away. I took a moment to gather myself while I bit my lip. "So what are we doing here? Well more importantly, what am I doing back here in the middle of the night. I was cleared to go home."

"In a minute, Captain Rogers is gonna come in, him an I will be attacking you. It's Fury's order's, you know how he can be." My eyes widened and I took a step towards the door. The door then slid open and I saw Captain America, she was right.

"You guys don't have to do this. I could hurt you two. Please don't make me do this," My hands were put up and I started to back away from the both of them. "Please guys."

"We're just following orders Jae," Nat stood up and looked to Steve. He nodded once and both of them put their hands up slowly moving around me.

"I'm not really okay with fighting a kid. But Jaedyn, you we're out of control with New York. I'm sorry, you ne

"I really don't want to fight you two, I don't have control just ye-" Natasha moved to hit me, I leaned away and hit it out of my direction. Steve then moved around me and gave me a good kick back. I stumbled back and slid to a stop. "I guess were doing this." My fists clenched tightly, the braces glew dim and I started to advance to them. Steve put out a nice stiff left, which he planned to follow with a right cross. I slipped to the left, which threw him off enough so that I could step inside the right cross and get a handful of his hair. I gripped it tight enough to where he would have to move where I made him. Spinning him, I used him as a shield and shoved him towards Nat, who easily moved him out of her way. She gave me a hard few jabs to my stomach but I knew she was holding back. Swiping my leg I fell back and landed on my stomach hard. I took a deep breath. It hurt my rib cage. I exhaled, inhaled again, inched my arms under me and pushed myself up on my hands and knees. My head swam with Tess trying to break through and throw them around like rag dolls.

I stayed that way for a bit, on my hands and knees with my head hanging, like a winded animal. My eyes focused a little better. May I assist you? You seem to be losing the fight. "Shut up. This is about control, not who can win the fight," Steve went to pick me up, but I wrapped my legs around him and used his unbalanced body weight to knock him over. Landed a few blows to him too but, Natasha pried me off and threw me into the wall. I groaned gripping the back of my head. "Enough!"

A wave was shot from my body, sending Natasha and Steve back against the opposite wall, my blue energy shooting out from my body. They hit the wall, hard. Nat hit a table then fell to the floor, Steve had just hit the wall then the ground. I gasped and watched the two of them get to their feet, Steve gripping his ribs. My arms crossing, hiding my hands from hurting anyone else. "Steve, Nat! I didn't mean to, I'm sorry! I don't know how to-"

"I'm good Jae," Nat said, said and threw a weight at me, my hands shot out in front of me. Stopping it inches from my face. "You didn't hurt me. Steve?" He nodded once to the both of us, but he saw what Nat was doing and did the same. Grabbing weights and throwing them at me. I was able to stop them, redirecting them or dropping them in front of me. I hadn't noticed Nat had stopped throwing and moved around me.

"Look you guys I'm not ready for this. You guys are gonna let her out. I don't think I will ever be-." I began but was cut off when I was spun and slapped. I turned back gripping my cheek and looking into her eyes. Steve had gone to throw another but my hand went up stopping the weight and him. Picking his body up and moving it by Nat, the weight fell to the floor and I let go of Steve. "What the hell Natasha?!" I yelled through my gritted teeth. She rose her hand again, this time a fist. I stopped her movement's easily with a look and her body was encased in my energy.

"You are ready. You are. You're just afraid of what happened last time, you wouldn't like that to happen again. You are afraid. Of yourself." I shifted on my feet and saw her whisper something to Steve, he gave me a soft smile before taking his leave. "Jae, you are a good kid who got shoved into a world that you really shouldn't be involved in."

"My dad is Iron Man," We shared a look before I let out a soft chuckle. "How did I do? Did I pass Fury's test?" She nodded and patted me on the back, moving over to a chair. "You got a hand on the power, you're just scared."

"More like terrified Nat. I didn't ask for this," I put my palms up and she saw the scar on my right hand and the glow of my braces. "The day I turned eighteen."

"Some birthday yea?" I scoffed and she nudged me. "You're a Stark, strong willed an a pain in the ass." There was a knock at the door and I spotted Clint at the door frame. "Hey Clint."

"Hey you two," He smiled to us. A nod between the two of them sent Nat on her way after giving me a side hug. "As you're Commanding Officer-"

"Oh don't start that Clint, I'm to tired to deal with being you're ward," He chuckled and shook his head. "You are my Commanding Officer I get it. You are the one who allows me to remain in public eye I guess. Otherwise I'll be in some Shield Prison?" I watched his facial features contort as he saw I knew what they were going to do if I get out of hand. "I get it..."

"Do you though?" Suddenly I could feel the room get suddenly tenser. "Jaedyn. What happened might not have been your fault but it still was. That might not make sense, but to others it was you who did it all. They don't get that it was this other person inside of you. I still don't but I want to try," I smiled and put my head in my hands, a soft laugh escaping me. "You're a smart kid though, I know you know that."

"Thank you Barton, I really needed someone to say that," He nodded and waited for me to sit back so I could see the intense look on his face.

"I'm you're Commanding Officer, yes. I'll give you assignments, debrief you before and after missions, and I'll train you occasionally. Though you don't really need it. You're really talented with a bow, Stark. I want you to also be able to come to me about problems. I might not always understand, but I know that it's hard to talk to others in your family. Especially you're dad," I crossed my arms and felt more an more uncomfortable. "I do know you two were close before he left for Afghanistan, and when he got back he saw the way you were and then vise versa. You two never really resolved that. Anyway what I'm trying to get at is if you need an outsider's perspective, you got me," I could feel the tears in my eyes start to swell and I had to quickly rub them away. He wrapped an arm around me an hugged me, the two of us laughed for a brief moment. "Alright Stark, let's get you home."

"I can get myself home Clint," The two of us stood up, and I extended one of my hands, a portal forming a few feet from us. "It's getting kinda easier to control."

"Well that's a good sign yeah?" I nodded, we hugged again and he gave me a quick salute. "Agent."

"Sir." Stepping through the portal I closed it and heard the descending steps coming from the staircase. There was a relieved sigh that followed and I ended up turning around to see Tony standing there in some pajama pants and a Van Halen shirt. "Hey Dad..." I dragged out dad trying to act like I hadn't just teleported.

"Hey Dad?! Really? That's all I get?" He was fuming. My body stiffened at the remark, I cringed hearing his anger. "What did I tell you? There were rules. One of those being, No portals in this home or any of the others, as well as no teleporting."

"Oh my god, I needed air. Last time I was here I was trying to-" I scrunched my hands and brought them up as I was going to start an argument but I knew that was just gonna end up leading me back to my room. Angry. "I don't want to talk about that right now Tony. I just want to sleep," When I went to pass him he grabbed my arm, by instinct I grabbed his harshly and spun out of his grip.

"What do you think you're doing? Who is the parent here?" He gripped his arm where I had shoved off of him. "Don't get it confused here Jaedyn."

"Get confused what Tony?" I scoffed and moved towards my room. "Some parent." There was a soft tone when I spoke and I heard a glass shatter.

"Goddammit Jaedyn. I'm the parent. You are the child!" I spun around and saw him start to charge towards me. I did the same right back at him.

"Yea? You sure about that? As soon as you act like a parent. Let me know!" Tess yelled. The way dad heaved a heavy breath showed he was furious at me. I dug my nails into my palms, feeling the start of waves coming off of me. What was even more frightening was dad's look. Brows drawn together, a vein in his neck pulsing. I thought he and the vein would both burst. Whoops. I let that slip. But you agree he hasn't been the best parent, and he hasn't done much to improve it.

"Jaedyn Stark!" I wanted to say it wasn't me, but I'm not sure how that would benefit my case. He groaned and flopped onto the couch, his head in his hands. "I know," If I could have left and barricaded my room again I would have. "I know I'm not the best father. I'm sorry. I'm trying Jaedyn, that's all I can do. I need you to try and do the same. Please."

"Okay," My voice broke as I spoke and I sat down next to him. Pulling my legs close to my chest and resting my head on my knees. "I'm sorry..."

"Me too princess," The heaviness in the room started to fade and I gave him a soft smile. "This isn't the best time, but I just needed to tel you. You were invited to attend a funeral. The funeral of Officer Alec Walker. His mother sent it to the tower. I guess she knew you two were close," I stood up and felt myself start to grow sick, the room around me starting to spin. My powers moved a chair over to me to stabilize myself, but that didn't stop the flashback.

"Well, you hurt her!" Tess cried out and he dropped, his beautiful bright green eyes were no longer open. Staring at me, begging me to let him go. He didn't move either, his chest had lifted once more before it slowed to a stop. I dropped, my knees had buckled from under me. I felt my body regain control, able to see what I had done. Tears staining my face as they fell onto his Shield uniform. My fingertips brushed his dark hair from his eyes and I pulled him onto my lap.

"What did I do. What did I do?! I killed him, Alec..." I mumbled to myself, he looked at peace, sleeping. I knew better, he wasn't breathing.

"Jaedyn?" I had released the chair to try and escape the room, walking only a few feet before collapsing, my knees hitting the tile and I had slumped over my knees. "Jae!"

"I killed him," My words came from me breathlessly. "I killed him dad. I lifted him up and choked the life from me and almost killed his brother during the invasion. How can I go there and expect to me welcome as the girlfriend of the deceased," Tears were spilling from me now and I was rocking back and forth. Waves started to ripple off my skin. Tony had gotten off the couch and onto his knees pulling me into his chest. Hugging me, I tried my best to take slow breaths but the more I thought of Alec and his brother the ripples increased. "How does one do that? I killed him dad. I killed my boyfriend."

"Shhh..." Dad held me against his chest, I only whimpered and started to hyperventilate. "It wasn't you Jae, I know you. You wouldn't do such a thing. It was Tess." I shook my head and heard a horrid cry escape from me.

"I was angry. Everything that Tess was feeling was stuff that I was really feeling. It was as if my emotions were amplified a hundred fold. I was overwhelmed and when Tess killed Alec. I came back and all the anger was gone. It was just... Pain." Dad lifted me up, I didn't bother to wrap my arms around him. He did fine at keeping me stable, while he walked us up the steps and into my room. "I thought I wanted him dead, but it was Tess who took my anger and used it against me."

"I got you Jae, don't worry. I'll be with you tomorrow," I felt the plushness of my bed under me and the covers pulled over me. "Goodnight Princess."

"Goodnight Dad."

I don't remember when I woke up all I did know was that I didn't sleep well. Dragging myself to my shower I took a quick an cold shower to wake up my body and start the morning off right. Numb. There wasn't much my dreams weren't plagued with, mostly the battle but that was a given. My eyes stared into space, his words echoing in my skull. I already was dressed, it was 6:49 a.m. A black long sleeve dress with sleek neckline, the dress went to my knees and I grabbed my leather jacket that would hide my new pieces of jewelry. My hair was curled slightly to allow slight bounce and I did simple makeup, mascara, concealer, lipstick. I wore black sneakers to remain casual, despite it being a funeral. I was grieving, I'm sure they could respect my choice of attire. I would rather not go, but the girlfriend not attending seemed a bit off and would most likely raise questions.

"She's taking this death a lot harder and blaming herself. She knows that it was her emotions as well as Tess. But she is still hating herself because of it." That drew me out of my rut, I stood up and walked towards the stairs. "I don't know what to do in this situation."

"There's not much you can do in this situation Tony. She's grieving and she's thinking she's guilty for something she did and didn't do." My feet stopped two steps down and I sat at the top of the stairs listening in. "She's just a kid."

"A kid whose killed people and now is locked into Shields grasp Pepper," Tony sighed heavily. I could almost feel his frustration and exhaustion from where I was. I was reluctant to move, I was intrigued by what they were saying. "That's it Pepper. She's a kid who is gonna grow up with this plastered into her file. A file, which should remain sealed, and burned." I heard Pepper scoff. I couldn't hear whatever dad whispered to her, but whatever it was got her to gasp. "I can explain it all later Pep... We're gonna be late, I'll go get her. It's going to be a long drive." Dad strode towards the staircase which caused me to stand and back up to the top of the stairs. Pretending to just come down. "Jae-" Dad stopped calling for me when he saw that I was already on my way down. "You ready princess?"

"Who is ever ready for a funeral?" I stepped down passed him and Pepper gave me a comforting hug before Happy gestured for us to start towards the car. "I remember you taking me to see Grandma and Grandpa's once, I saw how it affected you. Even if you and you're dad had a falling out, you still miss them," Dad wrapped an arm around me pulling him against him, wrinkling his dress shirt. "Dad."

"Sorry..." He kissed the top of my head and we broke the hug.

The company car a slick black car, tinted windows. Most likely bullet proof for Pepper and I, Dad remodeled all cars to be super durable and protective. I sat behind the drivers seat, dad rode shotgun, and Pepper sat next to me. No one knew what to say, I could feel their eyes on me though. I gazed out the window, losing myself in my thoughts. Better not be an incident there. Alright? I asked Tess, and I saw my reflection in the tinted window nod to me. My eyes next seeing Dad's reflection. His gaze concerned for me.

"Jaedyn?" We turned to see the dark hair and chiseled features of Alec, his green eyes staring over at me. "Jae?" What was he doing here? In the Helicarrier? He would only have one reason to be in a Shield Helicarrier.

"Your Alec?" Tess laughed, crossing her arms, the cracks starting to spread a long her body. "She should have realized what you were the moment you arrived," Slowly she stepped forward, he backed away as she advanced. He should have ran. Tess stopped him from moving and poked at his name tag, "Go on... Agent Walker, if that is your name. Explain yourself." Just run Alec. I wanted to break out and shove him away from me, I wanted to do something.

"Jae... I-," Tess' eyes shot open wide and lifted Alec off the ground, the energy being concentrated on his throat. "Jaedyn, I was going to tell you. I wanted to, the Director insisted I keep my cover as your boyfriend-"

"Cover!" I cut him off, me. His cover as my boyfriend. Gone. Tess could feel my own anger boiling under our skin and decided to use it against me. "I was just a mission to you, you lied to me! Was Everything A Lie?!" The more Tess yelled the tighter our grip on him got. "Did you even care about me or was I just some person you toyed with?! Was I Just A Mission?!"

The knocking at the car door caused my eyes to open and notice where we were. Grave stones, a party of more than twenty was surrounding a stone. I couldn't read it but I knew who it was for. Pepper was with Tony, who had gone over to Alec's family. I noticed his brother.

Tyler, the older brother. It came back to me, Tess had attempted to kill him. I stopped it. He wouldn't believe me if I said it was a person inside my body. No... I attempted to kill him, and I stopped myself before I did.
