Chapter: Seven
The next few days were difficult for sure, and Pepper did her best to stop the damage within Stark Industries. Natalie was at the house almost constantly, being dad's new PA. She gave press conferences and tried to keep dad on track, when all he wanted to do was remain in the workshop. With the paparazzi hounding and camped out in front of the gate and down below the house by the beach I couldn't leave the house. So I was stuck with dad, Happy, Pepper, and Natalie. Which wasn't too bad, but whenever I saw Natalie she would just watch me. It was kinda creepy.
Rhodey stopped by a few times, and whenever that was Pepper had told him to go convince dad to talk to the press so they would stop standing outside our house. But as of late, no one could get through to him. I wasn't allowed in the workshop, he had revoked my pass code from the access panel. Pepper was still allowed in, but never told me what he was doing.
And At night when I would wander into the kitchen to feast on whatever we had in the fridge I usually was met with Natalie's cold look. I was sitting on the kitchen counter eating some leftover Chinese. I hand't bothered to leave because I had thought it was Pepper who had just stayed late to talk to dad about who knows what but it was Natalie who came through the door.
"Miss Stark," Her voice echoed in the dimly lit room.
"Jaedyn, just call me Jaedyn," She nodded in response. "I don't want to postpone the defense training any longer, so when can you teach me?" I saw her eyes wander down my body, stopping at the scar I dreaded. I couldn't wear shorts without having makeup on my leg to cover it so I wouldn't get stared at. I sighed heavily lifting up my right leg so she could see it. "Dad's partner tried to take over, tried to kill dad and I. Cut me with a knife, took dad's chest arc and we both almost died. That was six months ago," She was silent the whole time but didn't seem to mind about me speaking about it.
"We will wait until after your father's birthday party," I nodded a quick smile flashing over my lips. "It's gonna be on my terms, my training." Again I nodded and went back up to my room returning to my uninterrupted sleep. I was glad that I was able to keep sleep for once, thanks to some heavy sleeping pills that Pepper had given me. There was also so good news that happened as of lately, Ivan Vanko had died. I hated the man and I was glad that he had died but I had hated that I was glad he had died. There had been an explosion and he had died because of it, at least there was one less person who wanted to kill dad. Dad refused to tell me whatever he found out about him and that was what worried me, he told me just to not worry about it. Ivan had tried to kill not only dad, but he had wanted to kill me as well. He had built an arc reactor mimicking dad's with electrical whips to kill off the Stark line.
The day of my father's birthday came and I was filled with dread. Yes I was excited for it being his birthday but I was not excited for the hundreds of people invading my home for his party. The morning after dad's birthday the house was destroyed and everything was a mess. The morning of dad's birthday everything was moved around and a DJ booth was being set up, so much alcohol was being brought into the house. I knew this was going to be a bad party. As I walked down the steps into the living room I saw Natalie standing in the center of all the nonsense. I slowly went down the stairs stopping at the door, knocking on the glass. He closed something on his monitors before turning around in his chair looking to me.
"Whatcha need Jae?" He asked leaning back in his chair.
"Are you sure you should be throwing this party?" I motioned for him to open the door but he didn't, why is he created this even wider gap between us? It's not like we both have just gone though a traumatic experience or anything...
"It's a little party Jaedyn," Understatement, a Stark's parties are never little. I wasn't going to tell dad this though because it was my dad's birthday. I'm suppose to love this day and party like he did. But I didn't, I got to see a side of him that I wasn't fond of. "What you don't want to celebrate your old man's birthday? It's my birthday Jaedyn."
"Yea okay, sorry..." I mumbled watching as he turned away back towards the computers, and my feet stepped back up the stairs.
The night couldn't end quick enough, and it wasn't going to end any time soon. I had people destroying my room, some couple making out on my bed. Two or three drinks were split on me, my favorite picture broken. Yet, I still played the happy party loving daughter, pretending to have a nice time when in all reality I wanted this to be over so I could just clean my room and go to sleep. I kept myself moving all night to try and keep myself busy, and I hoped that I would see Pepper or Rhodey but neither were here yet. And I had shortly entertained myself with going down to the beach and just sitting on the rocks. But then who would keep an eye on dad, because I knew he would be getting drunk until he couldn't stand and he would fall over passing out. So I was stuck again.
Reaching the living room where the DJ had set up I saw Natalie with a flirty grin plastered on her lips with an Iron Man gauntlet on her hand. She was leaning into dad's chest and dad whispered something into her ear. A split second later the Iron Man statute was in pieces and I gripped my sides, my eyes shutting closed tightly.
"Are you serious?" I recognized the voice instantly, Pepper. Spinning around I saw her with an almost mirrored look of disbelief on her face. All I wanted to do was go over and shove Natalie over, but knowing what she can do, even the slightest thing. Worried me. Dad spotted Pepper and I, she had started over but I just crossed my arms over my chest and me dad's eyes. Quickly I went over to the bar and smiled over at the bartender.
"Miss Stark your father instructed-"
"I don't give a damn, as you can see neither does he," I jumped up on the counter and slid over it, moving the guy out of my way. Grabbing the Rye Whiskey I took out a glass from under the counter and mixed in sweet vermouth, grabbing some of the orange and Angostura bitters I mixed that in grabbing a cherry and plopping it into the ice drink. I smiled cheekily to the man before making my way out from behind the counter. I wasn't going to stand by and watch dad shoot things with Natalie, hopefully they wouldn't do anything stupid. Making my way though the dense crowd I sipped on my drink making my way up the stairs walking to my room. Pepper could handle dad now, I could escape. Opening my door I see a couple feeling each other on my bed. My red covers scattered on the floor, I set my drink on my desk and grabbed the girl my her ankle pulling her out of my bed.
"Hey!" She yelled falling onto my floor, she saw who I was then zipped her lip. "Jaedyn."
"Out. Now," Two words was all it took to get them both out of my room. No chance to sleep, as the walls were shaking because of the music. I took my drink and grabbed my covers up off the floor. I took a big drink of my glass and cringed feeling the liquid burn my throat. I hadn't tasted whiskey for a while now. Dad had kept the drinks in a locked cabinet now, after he found me taking his rum. I wanted to yell and hit something, how could dad do this to us? To me, when he knew that something like this reckless behavior was going to get us both in trouble. It could get me taken away from him. More than that to him I guess. If he continued like this, his the suits would be taken away. I took another drink and before I knew it, it was all gone. Thank god the guy who was in my room forgot to get his drink when I kicked him out. I started to steadily take drinks from it. I wasn't sure what it was but it was definitely making me drunk. After Monaco it had worried me even more because it wasn't just dad that had a target on their back, Ivan had wanted to kill me too. I didn't have anything to protect myself with, when I had shot Ivan I had done it out of fear, I hopefully will never have to deal with that again. Though that's why Natalie had to keep her end of our bargain. I'm so sick and tired of having to rely on someone else, dad, to come and save me. I want to be able to handle whatever life throws at me. I want to take a stand and handle my own life.
The sound of something shattering woke me from my thoughts and I down the rest of the drink wanting to be numb to the night. I was sick of people destroying my house every year on this day. I stumbled down the stairs, stopping half way seeing my father drunkenly stumbling around in an Iron Man suit.
"What. The. Hell?" I asked myself stumbling down the stairs and pushing off some idiots. He was obviously blindly drunk and it wouldn't end well with him in the suit either. Seeing Pepper in the crowd made me duck and move to her side. "What do we do? I don't know, Pepper..."
"N-Neither do I," She stuttered seeing the mirrored shock in her eyes as we stood watching my dad chug a bottle of champagne. I groaned throwing my hands in the air and walked over to a slightly less occupied room. Gripping my phone I called the only person who I knew could handle this.
"Hey Jaedyn, I'm outside what's up?" When I heard he was here I booked ass out the door.
"Uncle Rhodey!" I had started to call him that when he signed my birthday card with Uncle Rhodey, it kinda stuck. "We need help. I can't... He's drunk, a lot..." I sigh relieved knowing he can handle this, I grabbed his hand and dragged him inside, I stumbled over my own foot and he had to catch me.
"Jaedyn, are you drunk?" He asked stabilizing me.
"A little," I shrugged and when I saw the way Rhodey was looking at me I gave him a sharp glare. "Look. I'm sorry if I turned out to be a major disappointment, but this, me, is the best I could do with what I had to work with," I motioned over to my father being a DJ, "Like father like daughter right?"
"You've got to be kidding me." He grumbled but at that moment Iron Man fell into a glass cabinet, getting up and laughed. The crowd cheering for his drunkenness. "And I stuck my neck out for the two of you."
"Can you handle him?" I stumbled leaning towards him. "I can't deal with him when he get's like this."
"Just stay here..." That's when I noticed Pepper had gone over to Dad, who had found a microphone and was yelling out to the crowd.
"You know the question I get asked most often?" He said with a slur. "Tony how do you go to the bathroom in the suit?" The whole room went silent and I leaned against the railing of the stairs to stop myself from falling over. "Just like that." I cringed covering my eyes with my hand as everyone had started to cheer once more while dad was laughing. Pepper had a forced smile on her lips as she took the mic from him.
"Does this guy know how to throw a party or what? Tony, we all thank you so much for a wonderful night," Pepper said her smile was the best fake smile I had ever seen her give. "And we're gonna say goodnight now, and thank you all for coming." I sighed and tried to shrink hearing everyone begin to boo.
"No, no, no," Dad cried as he reached for the microphone. He and Pepper started speaking and I could see the saddened look in her eyes as she took the bottle from dad's hand and replace it with the mic once again. "Pepper Potts." Dad moved, drunkenly, to the middle of the room. "She's right you know. The party is over. Then again, the party was over for me like an hour and a half ago," I took a deep breath, a smile crossing my lips. But he continued. "The after party starts in fifteen minutes!" That sent the room into a frenzy of cheers and yelling. "And if anybody, Pepper, doesn't like it, there's the door!" He rose his hand and the familiar sound of the repulsors went off shooting the wall by the door.
I heard the loud crashing of me being thrown across the tile and slamming into a wall. The men coming towards me, Obadiah grabbing me tightly and cutting my leg, I wanted to scream but I couldn't. There were scars that remained and healed for the most part but the mental scars had just been ripped open. The scars had healed but the mental ones hadn't.
My heart rate shot through the roof as I remembered looking into my fathers eyes, that was the last time I would ever see him was what I had thought. I felt my body start to shake and I shook my head violently moving the memory out of my head as quick as I could. "I'm fine. I'm fine." I repeated to myself looking over to the crowd seeing them throw a bottle in the air. Which dad had quickly shot with the repulsor. I flinched again covering my head as the glass and alcohol fell onto us all. Rhodey had left and I had no idea where Pepper was at the moment. Girls continued to throw things left and right, cheering as dad shot them into pieces. Each time I dug my nails into my palms, each time with more strength, and my right hand was burning with pain. I couldn't breathe anymore, I was back six months ago. At square one, nothing was going to be okay. Another girl had grabbed a watermelon from who knows where I shook my head watching my dad shoot it with the chest repulsor.
"I'm only going to say this once," Everyone went silent seeing Rhodey in the Mark 2, I took an uneven breath. This was his response, more violence. "Get out." Everyone around me scrambled for the door and then the DJ, Pepper, Rhodey, dad, and I were the only ones left in the room. "Jaedyn." Rhodey motioned for me to leave but I wanted to stay to see the end. Pepper grabbed my bad hand on accident pulling me out of the room. I bit my tongue, tasting blood the next moment.
"No, we have to go." Pepper shut me up before I had the chance to counter her. People were running for the car and I watched as Pepper opened her door almost to push me into the car. I pushed the door shut earning a look from her. "Jae you don't want to be here for this."
"I'm not leaving."
"Jaedyn I'm not going to argue with you. Get in the car, Tony is not okay," She opened the car door again.
"No!" I yelled, only to hear an even louder bang echo through the house followed by the shattering of glass. "Their fighting?" Another crash answered my question, and again before I could think. I was running into the house. I could offer nothing in this situation against the two men in suits but I was going to be there. Pepper yelled after me and I felt this sudden dread flooding me, she shouldn't have followed me. Reaching the inside of the house I saw the huge hole in the wall, glass across the floor. They kept fighting, and I would race to find them only to not know where they went. The rooms covered with broken house hold objects and dust filling the air. This had to stop or the whole house would crash into the ocean. I had stopped suddenly when I heard the upper floor creaking, then crash. The two men had began to throw punches at each other and I got to look to see that they had crashed through my room. My room...
"Jaedyn!" I felt a hand grip my wrist a little to tight and Happy was dragging me out to the balcony. Not everyone had left is what I realized when I saw the people lining the railing. They all had wanted to stay to see the fight and record it. The first thing I did was grab the nearest phone and chuck it off the balcony. I didn't want this going on YouTube but I couldn't throw everyone's phone. This was going to get worse before it got better. Spinning around I saw dad smash Rhodey into a bench, knocking him unconscious. Slowly dad turned to the crowd and I watched his stance change to offensive before he yelled at us. Everyone scattered, except me. I stared at dad through the broken doors, he stared back. I couldn't tell who I was looking at though, Iron man or Tony Stark. I was afraid of my father. I couldn't deny the fear that traveled throughout my body sending chills down my spine. Was he so drunk he couldn't recognize his own daughter? What would he do? Would he attack me? He rose his repulsor to me, his daughter. Tears fell down my face, I was covered in dirt from the debris but could he not recognize me? I quickly wiped the tears away and balled my hands into fists looking at him.
"Dad!" I cried out, trying to get through to him. But it didn't work, and if Rhodey hadn't smashed the bench into dad's head I might not have been standing there. I dropped to my knees falling into the rubble of my home. I watched the pair standing in the ruins of our home, nothing would fix that. There had been cameras that had gotten that, and I couldn't do anything to fix this. The two men threw up their hands and their hands started to power up, through the loudness of my heart beating I could hear what Rhodey was saying.
"Put your hand down."
"You think you've got what it takes to wear that suit?" Dad replied.
"Put your hand down."
"Take the shot!" I had crawled to my feet before I sprinted out of the house. What could two repulsor blasts do when aimed at each other, one blast was dangerous but two? I had barely made it out of the house before the explosion shock wave sent me face first onto the drive way. Pain exploding throughout my body and my vision was blurry. I hadn't gotten the chance to cover my face from the glass or debris that was shot to me and I felt stinging of the glass cutting my skin. Thank god I had been at the edge of the blast radius. I managed to crawl to my feet once again and walk towards the others who had gotten knocked down. I wanted to make sure no one was wounded or worse, killed. After I noticed that Happy had gotten everyone behind the gate I rushed over back inside the house. Nothing was left standing, there was so much rubble. Both the men were slowly regaining consciousness but I figured that both of the men were done for the night.
"Jaedyn Maria Stark!" I heard my name being yelled and I slowly turned grabbing my side as I hurt, nothing broken or sprained. But bruised and sore. "Jaedyn Maria, where the hell-" She stopped mid sentence seeing me standing in my house, scratch that. The wreckage of my house. She turned me around to face her and she saw that I had some cuts on my face, bruising on my body and tears were threatening to spill. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine!" I said yelling, I was so not fine. "I'm fine Pepper!" I pushed her off of me and quickly stepped out of the house, stopping as I saw the news reporters finally at the gate and people were yelling questions. I broke, falling to my knees I bent over onto the ground crying. Pepper knelt down beside me, holding me for the moment before she helped me to my feet.
"Your coming to stay with me," She stated. I didn't dare say anything. She helped me into the car and I cringed feeling the pain course though my body. This was where we had gotten, dad almost killed me. He didn't know who I was, I was scared of him, my house destroyed and I wasn't going to be the same after this. I wasn't ever going to forgive him, nothing could excuse this.
Neither of us talked when we went into Pepper's house. She wanted to talk about it, I could tell. But I wasn't so I made my way over to the bathroom and she had graciously left me a few towels and left me some of her pajamas. After she closed the door I looked at myself. My face had numerous small cuts from the rubble and glass, besides that I was covered in dust. One look at my stomach and back, and I had to turn away. I was littered with bruises of multiple sizes and colors. Before I took a shower I looked at my phone, constantly buzzing. Twitter, Facebook, News sites, Instagram, YouTube, all videos or pictures showing the nights festivities. I took a quick shower knowing Pepper would want to take one as well but I was able to get all of the dirt and pieces of glass off of me. I tied my hair up in a bun as I left the shower and dawned Pepper's pajamas. The cuts from the glass had done nothing severe but draw blood. Pepper and I both had taken some aspirin and she slept on the couch. I was grateful for her, she didn't deserve this. I climbed into the bed and rolled onto my side, feeling pain everywhere I wasn't going to be able to get any sleep. The house was silent for a while as I thought about all the excitement from the night. Well if Stern wanted the icing to the cake this was it. Suddenly my phone rang out and I sighed sitting up I had debated to answer it, but I didn't care who it was. I let it ring out, only for it to ring out again. I gave in and looked at the caller ID, First call; Tony (Dad). Second call: Rhodey.
I threw my phone at the wall, it shattered into pieces.
