Chapter: Nine

I didn't know how long I waited, but I did. I waited on Pepper's porch for her to get home. Before I arrived I had gotten something to eat, despite the feeling in my stomach that made me want to throw it all up I kept the food down. Whenever either dad or I were upset he would go and get us donuts from this place that had a giant donut for their sign. Thinking of it made me smile but that shortly lasted as I realized everything reminded me in some way of dad. I looked up to him, idolized him, and now I could hardly look at him. How could I look up to a man who got so drunk he almost hurt his daughter?

When Pepper's car pulled into the drive way she got out and hurried over to me, seeing as I was obviously distressed. I tried to say something but I couldn't and my head just went into my hands and I started sobbing. She set her bag down and instantly went to sit next to me and hold me. I grabbed onto her arm and she held me and I let go, crying.

"I'm so sorry Jaedyn..." She said, soothing me with her hands rubbing my back. "I'm so sorry..."

"I don't want it to be this way between us though." I choked through my sobs, she agreed with me and we just sat there for a little while as I got out all my tears and calmed down. "Why can't I just have a normal father?"

"I don't think Tony will ever be normal Jaedyn," She sighed heavily and I sat up wiping my eyes. "He has his faults, were both aware of that. But I do know he loves you so much." I managed a smile for a moment. She stood and held her hand out for me. "Let's go inside, I'll make you some hot chocolate and I'll pack. Then we'll go to the airport." I nodded again and picked up my bag. I knew leaving for New York wasn't going to fix anything but I needed an escape. Distance was going to be good for dad and I, maybe he would realize that he was the one who had to change and not me.

"What do you mean you destroyed the car?" Pepper asked as she put some clothes into her bag. I was sitting on her bed with my hand wrapped around a mug of hot chocolate.

"I mean," I began thinking of how to word it, better to go the direct path. "I took a crow bar and beat the mustang to hell. So most of the work that was done on the exterior of the car will need to be redone." I shrugged when she stared to me shocked. "I was angry and words weren't gonna cut it, though I did say some rude words. Some were a little too much, but I have been pent up and I think I just let it all out there."

"I'm sure Tony knows you didn't mean all of them and that you were just angry."

"The thing is Pepper. I meant all of it. All that I said was true and it needed to be said, otherwise I don't think dad would have really understood what was happening there." I took another drink exhaling heavily. Pepper had finally zipped her bag and she looked at the time.

"I just hope he finally thinks of consequences. Maybe this trip will be relaxing for us, god knows I need it."

"If I can help with anything, let me know." I smiled to her and grabbed my bag. We were off to the airport, off to New York.

My eyes hadn't left the window, I was having mixed feelings about the trip we were taking. A reason was I was remembering how dad had looked when I was yelling at him. He almost had looked sick, but I had separated us to a point that scared me. I had been the one who yelled at him, but I had gone too far.

"Hey Pep?" I asked, my eyes still staring out the window. "Did dad tell you why he has been acting strange? I know this trip is suppose to be a way to forget everything. I just can't. It's all bugging me constantly."

"He hasn't told me anything, but I've seen it as well." I sighed when she didn't have any answers as I was hoping she had. Seems dad doesn't even trust Pepper to confide in. What secret was so big that he could trust even Pepper with it? Dad had told me everything once, and I wasn't going to forget anything he told me. The stuff about the Ten Rings, the fear he had in Afghanistan, everything in between. Something big enough for him not to tell me was certainly going to concern me. My life was already altered forever the day he landed home, but I don't think I would be able to hand anymore changes like that.

We didn't exchange conversation after that, we both just did our own thing. And when we landed we made our way to a hotel in Manhattan. I hadn't been hungry but Pepper had insisted on getting something to eat. I just wanted to go to sleep. I had a giant headache ever since we landed and I knew that I wasn't going to be good company. So instead of staying up with Pepper, Happy and Natalie. I went to my room and curled into my bed. They had left down to the hotel restaurant so they could eat. I was honestly surprised that Pepper had started to warm up to Natalie. As soon as I hit the bed my eyes closed and I was dreaming of 24 hours ago. When my home was not destroyed, when my dad and I had a decent relationship. But a dream was just that, a dream. I tried not to think of what dad was doing now, he could still be at home watching family videos, he could have started to clean our home. He could also have been wasted again to try and forget my outburst. I covered my face with a pillow telling myself I didn't care and that I was suppose to forget about it all.

My eyes fluttered open the next morning coming back into consciousness, everything was perfect at that moment. I didn't feel like I had to worry about anything, and there was nothing wrong with the world. It was those few seconds that I enjoyed the most about mornings, other than that I wasn't much of a morning person. And when I sat up everything rushed back to me, realizing that awful feeling was flooding my body again. The fight, destruction, party. I sighed getting up off the bed and glancing at my new phone, Pepper had graciously gotten me. Same number, just new phone. Dad hadn't called, I was partially glad but still I felt upset. I had no idea where we could go from here, and even if our relationship would be the same. The streets of New York below us were rather busy to say the least, and it made me remember how busy I was going to be. I would most likely have to take control of the press meetings on this trip. I wasn't the best at them, but I would need to learn if I was to take control of Stark Industries. I quickly took a shower and grabbed some clothes, a black tee and some jeans with my black Converse. Pepper's room was across the hall so after I got dressed I walked into her room. We hardly knocked anymore when it came to each other, besides when I was at home. We talked for a bit about what would happen today and then what would go on later tonight at the expo.

"I'll send a car for you later tonight, I'm going to be swamped with meetings all day." I nodded understanding, and I was grateful that she didn't ask what I would be doing. Maybe she already knew what I was going to be doing though, considering whenever we were here I went to Central Park and just wandered. After we both had eaten we said our goodbyes and we both went our separate ways.

I had left the hotel and refused Happy when he offered to drive me to the park. He thought it was in my best interest to be driven someplace, while I on the other hand wanted to walk along the busy streets. As I walked I has saw the heads that turned to me, and I was forced to realize that the footage of the party had been online and no doubt hundreds of thousands of people had viewed my father's drunken behavior. I knew that if I hadn't brought my zip-up hoodie and sunglasses I would have been asking to have cameras shoved in my face.

As expected as I walked through the park and I couldn't stop thinking about dad. I just wanted to grab my phone from my back pocket and call him. I hated what I had said and I hated how I had destroyed the car. It was important to us, and I had gone an destroy it. I knew though, that if he didn't tell me what was going on the fights and destruction was going to happen. As I walked through the park, whenever I saw a little girl holding her father's hand I was reminded of my own childhood. It was good, though it wasn't always perfect. When I was little, dad liked to take me here whenever we had gone to New York. We would just walk around and talk. Sometimes we had brought a picnic, but it was normally cut short thanks to the company. One time we had spent the whole day here and I ended up falling asleep under a tree where dad had been reading to me.

I hadn't noticed my hands were shaking until I looked down to see them shaking, not from the chills that were creeping up on me but from the memories. I shook my head sticking my hands in my pockets and hurrying my way over to the streets so I could leave the park. When I reached the streets I was debating with myself to call dad. Maybe he would call me, maybe I should call him. He could finally explain to me what was going on with him. I nodded as if answering my own question. When I was back in the hotel, I would call him and then get ready for Hammer's presentation. As I crossed a street I put up my hood when I was met with a rush of wind, that's also when I felt the buzzing of my phone. I gripped my phone and brought it to my ear.

"Jaedyn here." The younger Stark's voice seemed to echo through her father's ears.

"Jae, please. Don't hang up." Across the country Tony Stark sat in a chair working, his hands flying across the keys of his computer keys. Working to triangulate his daughters position. Suddenly the girl stopped moving, she was confused as to why she could hear her father's voice filled with worry. The young teenager sighed thinking he was drunk and just wanted to voice how sorry he was. She rolled her eyes and rubbed her temple with her other hand. The cold night sending chills up her spine, while across the country her father had chills because of a much frightening reason. "Jaedyn. Tell me where you ar-"

"No, Dad you don't just get to trac-" The esteemed Tony Stark yelled cutting his child off.

"Christ! Jaedyn Maria. Listen to me. Wherever you are, do as I say. Run." That single word sent the girl straight to the worst possible place. She was scared and her breathing started to quicken.

"Dad?" She asked, starting to walk faster, almost a jog. Around the block the girl had just passed were four men in an unmarked van. Checking a picture that the man who hired them had been given, the girl was a match. The driver started the van and the men had put their masks over their face. The sound of the engine starting and the lights turning on caught the girls senses, she turned and her body felt instantly worried. "I'm being followed..."

The three words she had uttered were enough to cause any parents heart to drop. Tony could hear his daughters footsteps begin to move faster towards the other cars engines he heard in the distance. Just as Tony was about to say something along the lines of 'It's going to be okay.' Jaedyn felt something pull on her hood and then her hair, causing her to drop to the concrete. She had went to scream but a pair of hands had snapped her mouth shut. Both their hearts were beating fast and Tony felt numb as he heard the phone hit the ground. Hands began pulling the young woman back.

"Daddy!" She cried out for help but he was across the country listening to his daughter struggle against the men. "Let me go!" Hearing her sharp scream through the speaker of the phone, heartbreaking. Two of the men ripped off her jacket forcing her into the van and pulling her arms back behind her. She was the daughter of a billionaire, she was taught what to do in this situation but all of it went out the window and she began to panic. Her instinct was to fight, last time she was held hostage she almost died. She would be damned if she would let that happen again. Lifting her foot she shot it backwards hitting the kneecap of one of the men, he dropped to the ground where she then kneed him in the face. The second one distracted by his partner being injured loosened his grip. She yanked herself from his grip and spun around giving the second one a sharp jab to the nose. She would end up feeling that later as she hadn't had to punch someone in a long time.

The van moving to peal away from the street caused her to stumble back against the hard metal of the van. The second attacker had ignored the blood running down his face and got on top of Jaedyn grabbing at her hands. The wind getting knocked out of her caused her to gasp for air, she did the first thing that came to mind and brought her knee up hard between the mans legs. He rolled off her cupping himself, and she got to her feet. Trying to pry open the door handle only to have it open half way before it is slammed shut and her hair is grabbed pulling her hard against the floor of the van. She screamed out loudly involuntary as she had started to panic even more. Was this it? Was this where she was going to die? She had hardly even begun to live yet she was being kidnapped and held hostage. Again. What would happen before they would kill her? Questions raced through her mind as her eyes scanned for anything to assist her in another escape. She went to go for the door once more but when she opened it her hand reached on the edge of the door. Even across the country, Tony felt like he could feel her pain, or hear her scream. The young woman fell back against the floor of the van screaming out gripping her now blood covered hand and knuckles. She kept screaming and her eyes closed tightly gripping her hand, pulling it close to her.

"Oh that's just perfect, you were suppose to leave her unharmed!" One of the guys yelled back to the other two who had grabbed the girl and held her down. "Vanko wanted her to be in pristine condition." Vanko... He was alive? The girl's eyes started to blur with tears and her eyes rolled back into her head as she was pricked with a needle and her body suddenly went limp.

Jaedyn... No- Jaedyn... Jaedyn... Please...

There was a sharp pain when I tried to move my hand, I wanted to scream. My eyes shot open and I tried to move but I couldn't, my legs were wrapped and my torso was wrapped around this metal chair. My eyes washed over the room taking in all of the rooms surroundings. White walls that were darkened due to the fact that the lights were off. There was a little red blinking light a yard from me, a camera. Also a small lamp illuminating the camera set up. Looking down at my hand I choked back a sob looking at my poorly wrapped wrist to my knuckles. I couldn't bare to move my hand as it only sent a jolt of pain into my body.

"Miss Stark, you've been hurt enough so if you wont mind. Look at the red light." There was a male voice that caught my attention. I turned my head around as far as it could go and I saw Justin Hammer. I watched him walk over behind the camera, I struggled harder against the bindings I was in. "Oh quit moving Jaedyn. It will only hurt more. If the ridiculous Russian would have told me his plan in kidnapping you. I would have done it right. But currently we've been met with this situation."

"Situation? You kidnapped me and got my hand slammed in a fucking van door!" I yelled as loud as I could over to him, which only caused him to laugh. "Let. Me. Go."

"Well I can't do that now. With the expo going on in," He began while he looked to his fancy watch. "A hour."

"Screw you." I watched as he went over and pressed the camera, the blinking light was now solid showing me that I was being recorded.

"Miss Stark. Look at the camera and just say hi to your dad." My heart dropped and I looked at the camera. My eyes staring dead center of the lens, I felt the tears in my eyes. "Go on. He's watching."

"D-dad?" My voice broke. "Dad. I don't want to die..." I saw that Justin had rolled his eyes looking to me. "I-I'm so afraid." The light turned off when clicked the camera once more. My eyes went to Hammer once more and I screamed out loud, Hammer had rushed over to me and covered my mouth with his hand. Big mistake. I bit his hand as hard as I could, I could taste the blood. He pulled his hand back harshly and went to strike me but when he looked into my tear filled eyes, he lowered his hand. "I just want to go home." My voice was breaking and I almost thought I saw a look of remorse in his eyes. I heard him sigh and rub his hand. It wasn't bleeding a lot but it would need a bandage. He looked over to me and I saw him shake his head before he spoke.

"Look Jaedyn. Can you do me a favor. I wouldn't want you to get hurt anymore. Can you please just, do what he says?" He fixed his suit and then headed for a door. The room filled with light from the hall then it went dark once more. I looked to my hand once more thinking about my situation. What was I going to do? And how could I get out of here? Wait... Do what who says? My eyes lifted up and I met the eyes of a supposed dead man.

"Jaedyn Stark..."
