Chapter: Five
My jaw dropped seeing my father in the blue and black race suit. The racer off to the side of the screen was upset, he threw his helmet. Dad looked as if he knew what he was doing, and sure he knew how to drive fast cars, but a Race car? No way in hell did he know what he was doing.
"Natalie, Natalie!" Pepper yelled searching for the red headed woman who was hurrying over to our table.
"Yes Miss Potts?" She asked, seeing the television and who happened to be on it.
"Did you know anything about this?" She shook her head, looking to me. I had a stunned look on my face that wasn't going to go anywhere anytime soon.
"This is the first that I have known of it." Pepper looked scared and worried as everyone in the hotel began looking from the TV over to us then back as if to ask us what the hell dad was doing.
"This... this cannot happen."
"Absolutely. I understand. How can I help you?"
"Where's Happy?" Pepper asked.
"He's waiting outside." Natalie said motioning over to the door, she was calm and when her eyes met mine once more she was saying, this is why I'm here.
"Okay, get him. I need Happy." Pepper said, taking a deep breath.
"Right away." Natalie immediately left to go and find Happy. As I watched dad slip into the car an put on a helmet I was wondering if this was it, would this be the final straw for the senate to file something that would take me away from dad? How could he be so stupid and reckless? He liked fast cars yes but he has no experience in Formula one races or to drive against drivers who had years of experience on him. This was ridiculous, I wanted to run to the track and pull him out of the car by his ear. He was putting not only himself, but the other drivers in danger, well more danger. Why wasn't anyone going to stop him, was it because he was Iron Man or because no one wanted to order the billionaire around. I was hoping someone could stop him but that was put to rest when the lights went on and the race began.
The glass of coke I was holding so tightly, shattered in my hand. Causing Pepper and I both to jump to our feet, I hadn't even bothered to look at my hand. My eyes were glued to the screen and as soon as he was done, I would yell at him until I couldn't yell anymore. I watched the cars speed up to 160 mph and that's when I remembered that drivers have died trying to finish this race. As I heard the engines coming closer to our building, I spun in my seat and watched the cars fly by. I couldn't believe my dad was in one of the those cars. This race wasn't even started but I was already on the edge of my seat, I couldn't sit by while my dad had 77 laps to go. As the camera moved to follow the racers that's when I saw a man in an orange jumpsuit push open a gate and get onto the track, there was screaming from the crowd.
"What is he doing?" I mumbled to myself watching him. No sane person would do that, there were 160 mph cars driving passed him. When I looked closer to the screen, I instantly pulled my phone from my clutch pulling up the same picture of Isabella and I. It was the same man. He ripped open his jumpsuit and on his chest was a harness that had a makeshift arc reactor strapped to the middle of it. Not good. He pulled these whips and they started to glow with electricity, and they were being powered by the arc. As each car came by they attempted to swerve out of the way but the man swung a whip slicing the cars. The force from the whip causing the car to flip until it rolled to a stop on a barrier.
He was here for dad, he was here to attack him. To Kill Him.
"Pepper!" I yelled to her, I for sure wasn't gonna sit here and wait for it to be over. I stood up, brushing off the glass from me and saw Happy standing by the door. In his hand, the suit, in a suitcase. I had helped dad in designing the compact suit so in cases like such, we were set. I grabbed my bag moving passed the audience that had gathered and making my way down the steps, motioning for Happy to follow.
"Jaedyn there is no way I'm allowing you to get in that car, your dad would have our heads,"
"Unlock my door Harold or I'm breaking the window. I'm not going to sit and watch as my father could die," Pepper didn't like the idea either and held the door closed. I groaned and moved over around the car to the front seat door, I had gotten there before Happy so I slid into the seat. "I'm coming with you, suck it up and drive," Happy took a seat in the drivers seat then looked to me as if waiting for me to leave. "Drive or your fired!" I yelled and that got him throwing the car into drive. I could hardly breath as I could hear my heart in my head pounding. How long until dad rounded the bend where the man was, could he already been attacked? Was he... No! "Floor it Happy!" I yelled again, urging him to go faster even though that was as fast as he could go. I tore off my heels and steadied myself for the impact of a yellow guarded gate.
"Hang on!" Happy cried as he sped towards the gate that led onto the track. The guards that were waving to stop dove our of the way just in time. We hit the gate hard, blasting it open, and without my seat-belt on I was jolted forward. I had caught myself before my head went into the dashboard but it still hurt my chest. I pushed the pain from my mind as we went hurdling down the track. It was then, as we were dodging race cars that I threw my seat belt on. That's when I noticed the cut from crushing the glass cup had actually cut my hand. A slow course of blood was coming off my hand and onto my already red dress, blending the reds together.
"Give me the case!" Pepper yelled as she steadied herself using the back of Happy's seat. While still keeping his eyes on the road, Happy reached down and hastily passed Pepper the case. "Where's the key?" Happy was looking for the key on him and I grabbed the wheel dodging a car and making it so he realized he needs to be focused on driving.
"It's in my pocket!" Pepper reached into his pocket grabbing the key quickly. I hated this feeling, this feeling of helplessness when dad was in trouble- when he could be dead. The last time I felt like this was when both had almost died. I spotted the spoke in the sky and before we know it we were around the bend and we saw the graveyard of cars. Lying on the damaged road while two were burning.
"That's dad's!" I yelled as I saw one lying upside down. My heart stopped beating as I saw dad standing on front of the man who was moving towards him, ready to kill. I had no idea what I was doing here, I had nothing I could offer the situation. Why aren't we slowing down?
"Hold on!" Happy yelled loudly as we hurdled towards both dad and the man trying to kill him. I braced myself for the crash and hoped that dad had moved out of the way in time. The seat-belt caused me to not go through the windshield but the airbag went off and hit me hard. I gasped for air when it started to deflate, Dad.
"Dad?!" I yelled ripping off my seat-belt that was holding me still. My whole body ached, I looked passed the now broken windshield and saw the man pinned on the hood. I didn't care if he was dead, all I cared about was where my father was and if he was okay. That's when I saw him jump from the fence in front of us. Cuts and bruises scattered across him, but besides that he was fine. I wanted to yell at him, then hug him then hit him.
"Are you okay?" I heard Happy ask him.
"Yeah," Dad said as he walked towards Happy's window. "Were you heading for me or him?"
"I was trying to scare him!"
"Cause I can't tell!" Well I thought saving your ass got us a thanks or something, but no he was yelling to us. I probably would be doing the same though, as I was almost hit with a car. I could hear Pepper hyperventilating in the backseat, I went to grab her to comfort her but she yelled out causing me to shrink back into my seat.
"Are you out of your mind!?" Dad's eyes went from Pepper then to me, them widening. His eyes going to the cut on my hand and my rapid breathing.
"Oh yes," He began looking to Pepper then Happy. 'Driving my daughter towards the crazy man trying to kill me? Fantastic idea!"
"Oh get in the car!" I screeched at him, the smell of the fire's smoke invading my nose caused me to cringe. As he walked around to the other side of the car he was muttering to Happy about how he is debating on firing him or giving him a raise. Him also muttering something about better security. As he went to open the car door it was sliced in half, I screamed out seeing as the man who was still pinned between the hood and the fence was awake. Dad was yelling out for Pepper to give him the suitcase, he stood still which wasn't a good idea as he was standing there helplessly.
"Hit him again!" Dad yelled as Happy threw the car in reverse then drive in a quick second. I was going to go deaf with both Pepper and dad yelling loudly. Gripping the armrest I braced myself for the impact once more, I had expected the strange man to get knocked unconscious but he just laughed. I went to reach for the case but I heard the sounds of the electricity from the whip crackling and getting swung so I moved my hand just in time for the car to be slit in half.
"Pepper!" I yelled trying to calm down enough to throw him the case, "Pepper shut up and give him the case!" Finally Pepper took a short breath throwing the case out through the broken window. I saw dad activate the armor, throwing his arms into the proper places. Enclosing himself within the armor. I knew that we were still in danger but my eyes were locked at my father becoming Iron Man. He wouldn't let anything happen to us, I wouldn't say that I had become use to him being in the armor. It still made me nervous for his safety. Every bone in my body was against him leaving in the suit but he had helped so many people with the suit I couldn't say no. Plus the suit he wore I helped design; it had 95.5% titanium, 4.5 % gold, and the inside was coated with a synthetic fiber similar to Kevlar 49.
The first thing dad did was kick the car further down the track and out of the way. Iron Man raised a hand to shoot the man but before dad could fire the man wrapped a whip around dad's outstretched hand. I had began to panic when the same thing happened a second time, this shouldn't be taking this long to take down this man. Nothing could match the strength and power dad and I put into that suit. Not to mention the technology was far more advanced than anyone had ever seen. I could hear my heart in my head as it began to pound furiously as I watched the man winning the fight. Him tugging against the whips and throwing dad across the road, I gripped the seat beneath me tightly to stop my hands from shaking as I watched my father get thrown around like a doll. When the man threw dad onto the hood of the car both Pepper and I screamed out. She yelled Tony, and I yelled Dad. Despite dad and I being in a rocky place seeing him getting hurt made me hurt.
He was then dragged off the car onto the ground, I wanted to do something, anything. I couldn't just sit there watching helpless, it was going to eat at me. I felt the adrenaline inside my body start to create and tempt me into doing something stupid. I would not watch my dad get killed in front of my eyes. My body moved before I knew what I was doing, unbuckling my seat I reached for the glove compartment. I had gone shooting with Happy once, and I knew he had a Glock 22 in the compartment. I grabbed my door and began to slowly open it.
"Jaedyn. Don't," Pepper went to stop me but I turned back to her.
"I can not, and I will not stand by as he is killed!" I had no idea what I was doing, I was holding a gun, against two highly advanced suits of armor. I stepped out onto the track and walked around our car. Moving towards the man in the dirty jumpsuit. The noise of my bare feet hitting the race track didn't compare to how loud my heart was in my chest, I could hardly hear my dad yelling my name. "Hey!" The man stopped moving and he turned to me, dad was no longer attacking him but both their eyes were stuck looking at me. Out of instinct and my body memory, I turned off the safety and tightened my grip on the gun. My finger hovering on the trigger, looking at the cross-hair I aimed over to the jumpsuit. I exhaled then braced for the guns kickback. The shot echoed through my ears, and the man in the jumpsuit yelled out. My hand instantly tossed the gun to the ground and I stared out at the man who now was gripping a shoulder. I had shot a man. With a whip still wrapped around dad he used the other mans pain against him. But when Jumpsuit saw me through his cries out from being shot he swung his arm, and the whip towards me. Dad pushing me out of the way and grabbed the whip in his hand. I rolled to my stomach from dad shoving me out of the way and looked to dad. He had began to wind the whips around him before he flipped him over his head and slammed him into the ground. Reaching down he grabbed the makeshift arc reactor and crushed it in his hands. By the time I got to my feet, the officers had began to drag him away, his shoulder and chin dripping blood.
"You lose!" He cried out, a thick Russian accent easily heard. "You lose Stark!" The look in his eyes would scar me for many nights to come, and then his laugh echoed through my ears. "You lose!" His eyes found mine, then he seemed to size me up before chuckling as he looked to dad once again. I felt my whole body shaking and as I saw dad remove the helmet he stepped towards me. The officers coming over with paramedics looking at me. I took a breath thinking I would be getting yelled at but instead I was pulled in hard against the armor. I was in shock to say the least, and he seemed to know that I was. He was letting me know that we were both okay and that it was over. I knew that Iron man was him, but I knew Tony Stark better. I wasn't going to lose him, not again...
