Chapter: Eleven
Dad? He was here? Thank god. I let out a breath of relief and I had never been more weightless at that moment. It was then that I had realized that the beeping was for dad to be here, not here. He had enough time to kill me and then run if he wanted to. I thought he was going to do it as well, but instead he lifted me up off the chair so I was standing and then he gave me an evil smirk. He was up to something.
"What? What are you doing?" I questioned spitting out the blood I had tasted.
"I could kill you if you wanted?" I shook my head fast, I was good with living. "I want the world to see how your father can not save you, I want the world to see that he can't protect you or the people. They will see and they will understand after tonight. Turning against you and your father. I will destroy your family just as your grandfather destroyed mine."
"The expo..." I mumbled and he chuckled lowly, confirming my suspicion. He was planning on doing something at the expo, and that would probably involve killing people. Pepper, Happy, Natalia. I needed to do something, anything. I needed dad to get here fast, I needed to escape him and do something. I couldn't live with myself if I knew that I could have stopped this somehow. I needed someway to warn everyone. Ivan came over to me quickly and picked me up, I went to struggle but I found out that only hurt me. So I fell limp, pretending to have passed out or died, whichever made him believe me. I steadied my breath and held it as long as I could. He carried me to who knows where, there was a door opening and then closing, we had moved for a while before another door opened and closed. I was tossed onto the ground and clenched my jaw only for a moment forcing myself to remain motionless when he dropped me. He slammed the door closed, thinking I was unconscious or dead. I couldn't care less, I was just glad I wasn't either. When the door shut I heard it lock and then something broke. Probably the door knob. I waited for what seemed to be an eternity until I knew that the room I was in was silent, he probably left. Hopefully.
I began to piece things together in the time that I waited. He was at the expo, or heading to it at least. What could he do at the expo that was going to be damaging. He had to have some sort of plan, he wasn't going to stab a bunch of people. What was so important that he chose tonight to go destroy everything. The presentation, it was Hammers, that was it. He had been building suits for Hammer but he had to have done something to them. The suits were his plan, they had to be. He must have wired them so he could control them and not Hammer. Dad better get here soon, dad knew the suits better than anyone. He was going to be the only person able to stop this.
Finally I rolled onto my back and did my best to get to my feet without injuring my hand further. I tore off my sleeves wrapping my hand and arm as much as I could before I wrapped my other sleeve around me like a sling. I needed to keep it elevated as much as possible. I took that time to take a look around the room, I was in a broom closet. Classy. I grabbed a broom breaking off the end with my foot, weapon. I had turned to move for the door but I had knocked over a tool box doing so. The clattering of tools made my mind wander, smiling to myself I set the broom stick against the wall and took a screwdriver to the door. Unscrewing the hinges from there places.
Completing the work, which took longer than I thought being crippled. Suddenly hearing footsteps I froze, my hand had grabbed the broom stick and I held it like a spear with my left hand, when the light from the hall had been covered I took that as my opportunity. I kicked the center of the door as hard as I could and it fell off the remaining hinge pieces and onto whomever was on the other side of the door. I booked it off the door and sprinted down the hall but came to a sliding halt along the tile after I heard my name being yelled.
"Jaedyn!" I skidded to a halt stopping myself I spun on a dime and saw dad, he had thrown the door in the opposite direction then rushed over to me. Seeing the Iron Man suit running was kinda funny, but I would be able to joke about it later. He threw his helmet open and wrapped me in his arms, relief flooding both our eyes. I wanted to cry, I felt the weight of the night being lifted up off of me. "My god."
"I've never been so happy to see your ugly mug," I tried to joke as he kissed the top of my head repeatedly. Soon he tried to pull me into a hug again but I cringed and whimpered as my hand had brushed against the suit. "Dad..." He saw my blood soaked hand and make-shift cast and sling, his hand went to touch it but I pulled away.
"I'm gonna kill him," He growled lowly seeing the extent of my injuries.
"I-I'm fine," I muttered, and he scoffed. "Okay aside from my arm and hand I'm okay..."
"What happened?" He asked, we had started to walk towards the exit, slowly. He had noticed the red liquid that had stained both my clothes and his suit. When he had grabbed my hand, so softly I heard him utter things to Jarvis in his suit. I couldn't hear what Jarvis had said but the look from dad's face wasn't good news. I nodded agreeing that my hand was in bad shape, I smiled though trying to lighten the heavy topic.
"I tried to escape the van, my hand was slammed in the door. Afterwords Vanko broke my pinkie. In a way to torture me I guess," I spoke with venom in my voice when I said his name.
"I'm going to kill him, I mean it. We should get out of here."
"Hammer left after the video of me was sent to you, Vanko left when the alarms went off. He's gone to the Expo, you have to go stop him dad. I'll be okay." My voice had faltered slightly, I didn't want to look at my hand. It was starting to tingle and I felt light headed as we began to walk. I had lost too much blood.
"Vanko flew off when I got here." I stopped in my tracks looking to dad, flew?
"Does everyone have a suit now?" I groaned rubbing my eyes with my left hand. "Vanko, you."
"Hammer," Dad stated and when he saw my tilted head as I looked to him he answered my question. "Rhodey..." I nodded, comprehending it slowly.
"You can figure out or fight it out with your B.F.F later, now we have to go to the expo and stop Ivan. He wants to destroy you, he left me alive for that reason, he wanted me to bleed out in the closet. Obviously I'm smarter than one locked door." I motioned to the broken off door and smirked cheekily for a moment, but when I went to turn around I stumbled over my own feet and fell onto the cold tile.
"Jae," He said kneeling down and putting a hand to stable me. "You need a hospital."
"What? No. Dad you need to go." I pushed on his metal chest but it didn't budge, as head began to get light headed. "Pepper's at the Expo Dad." I saw the flash of concern and worry in his eyes. Again I pushed but dad grabbed my hand putting my arm over his shoulder. He shot one of his hands to the ceiling before shooting a hole through the ceiling. Afterwords his other arm went under my legs. "Dad-"
"Were getting you to the hospital, so shut up," He chuckled shortly, I joined in loopy but I still knew that we were destroying Hammer's warehouse. I needed him to get me to the hospital as soon as possible so I could tell him to go get Pepper. He needed to protect her too. With my good hand when he lifted me up bridal style, I slammed his helmet shut and cheekily grinned. He grumbled before he activated the thrusters and we were up into the sky. Dad's arms didn't crush me, they seemed to cradle me. I clutched my damaged arm close to my chest while my other was around Dad's neck. Despite me being in pain I couldn't help but still enjoy the amazing view. This was the first time I had ever been on a flight with dad in the suit, I hardly even bothered to ask dad if I could fly the suit. And me being carried by dad for a flight didn't even cross my mind.
Now I was seeing why dad liked to be in the suit, the night sky seemed to shine brighter with the reflection of the cities lights, the cool crisp air sent goosebumps along my skin. I was able to see the tiny people on the streets that seemed to be having a glorious time, little did they know was that they were in danger. And the only person who could stop the mad man was taking me to the hospital instead of saving the city.
"Dad?" I yelled up to him, I heard him hum in response to me, "Vanko mentioned you were dying?! Mind explaining that to me?" I felt dad tense as he carried me, he had heard me but I knew he wouldn't want to respond to my question. He wouldn't want to worry me.
"I can't hear you Princess, to much wind!" He shouted through the helmet. I rolled my eyes and rested my head on his chest. Slowly I lowered my left hand and touched his chest piece that I could see on the armor. That thing was going to kill my dad... I couldn't tell how much time he had left, and frankly I didn't want to know. I just wanted to tell him I loved him, every fiber of my being was filled with worry though. I had so many thoughts and questions running through my head, how long did he have? What would happen?
"Are you in pain? Why didn't you tell me? You selfish asshole why didn't you tell me?!"
"Where did that come from?" Dad replied to my yelling, I hadn't even realized that I had spoken allowed, I had yelled at him.
"What?" I questioned up to him. "I have one question for you."
"Ask me it when were at the hospital." I sighed closing my eyes. We were both gonna be persistent about what we wanted now. I could have helped, we were both insanely smart. I had just graduated MIT I could have done something, I could have- I don't, something. He should have told me, instead of me having to hear it from some villain as he broke my pinkie and tried to kill me. What was I going to do without him? I had barely lasted while he was in Afghanistan, how could I last without him the rest of my life? Who would walk me down the aisle? Who would see my kids? Who would help me when I needed it the most? I wasn't even sure if I wanted kids or to me married. What I did know was that I didn't want to lose my father. He taught me everything I knew, about cars and life. He was the one who supported me in whatever I wanted to do. It's a nightmare to think that next week he would be dead. I wasn't going to be able to grieve him dying again, I would descend into a dark spiral.
We started to lower towards the ground and I took a deep breath grabbing at his arm with my good hand. Dad gently set me onto the ground and I stumbled getting my barrings straight. A few people had stopped to stare in awe at the Iron Man and then they had puzzled looks on their faces. Wondering why he was there probably, then they saw me. Covered in blood, dirt, and tears.
"Get your ass inside and get checked out." Dad ordered me, I shook my head but when he turned to leave I grabbed his arm. He turned back towards me and I pulled him back with whatever might I could muster and forced him to look at me.
"Are you dying?" I stared up at the helmet, my eyes meeting the eye slits of the helmet and behind that were his eyes. I wanted him to see I wasn't going to give this up without an answer. "Tell me..."
"I'm not dying... anymore." I frowned when he spoke but when I went to say something I heard the power up of the thrusters. "Look Princess, I love you. Go inside please. I need to know your going to be okay." I heard him sigh and I nodded once.
"Okay..." As he took off I backed away, my eyes never leaving him. "Be careful!" I yelled back up to him, I watched him leave my vision before I started to make my way inside the hospital building. He wasn't dying, he had found some way to cure the palladium poisoning. I pushed open the door with my left hand then made my way down a long hall, the hall seemed to get even longer. I stumbled over as I made my way to the wall and I gripped it feeling even more light headed. Slowly my breathing got slower and I covered my eyes with my hand taking a deep breath.
He was going to be fine, he had to be...
