Chapter: Eight
The next morning I felt everything that had happened the previous night, my whole body hurt. I rubbed my face wiping away dried tears that I had cried in my sleep and I got up. I picked up the pieces of my phone and made my way out into the kitchen to toss it away. Pepper was on her phone, and I could see by the half empty pot of coffee on the counter she had been up for a while. I smiled over to her as she watched me throw my phone away. She tilted her head to the side questioning why, I shrugged in response. I wasn't really ready to deal with either of the two guys. With my shattered phone unusable her phone was being called constantly. I took some of the coffee and sat on the couch listening to her on the phone.
"Rhodey she doesn't want to talk to you-" She scoffed and rubbed her eyes obviously over with the conversation. "She sure doesn't want to talk to Tony. Why? Because you two destroyed her home and she almost was hurt that's why. I'll take care of her while Tony is figuring himself out." I didn't interrupt her call because I wanted her to finish it. I didn't know what to expect really, Rhodey had called, had dad? I wanted him to call, but I didn't. I would only be given some excuse and he was probably to drunk or hungover to pick up the phone. I was so tired of having to worry about him, it should have been the other way around. I am the teenager he was the adult, or he should have been. I was done. With the parties, the one night stands the drinking, he had gone back to his ways before he left for Afghanistan. If he wants to be a billionaire playboy and just party, fine. But he's gonna lose me in the process.
I had only gotten a few hours' of sleep but I did sleep pretty well. Pepper had plopped onto the couch next to me and I gave her a short smile. She set her phone on the coffee table and gave me a look that was basically a cry for help.
"I'm not sure what to do anymore Pepper," I sighed setting my coffee in my lap. "I don't think I can deal with dad like that anymore."
"I don't know what to tell you Jaedyn. Tony isn't in a good place right now and that doesn't give him the excuse for what happened but-"
"No. It doesn't give him an excuse, what I saw last night was what the world is seeing currently. On every site; YouTube, Instagram, News Stations, Facebook Videos, Twitter feeds. I'm done Pepper. Dad can't escape this one, and Stern. He's probably already talked to the courts about custody. I'm tired of having to take care of him. After I get ready I'm getting my things from the house and I'll go stay in some hotel, while I look for some place I could stay. And I'm not going to stay here, as much as I am grateful you took me in last night. I want to find my own place." She was silent the whole time I spoke, and when I had finished I got up off the couch and went to the bathroom. I wanted to get out of this place as soon as possible knowing that she would try to change my mind. So quickly I took a shower and got dressed in some clothes that Pepper had layed out for me. A black shirt and some jeans, I had to roll the ends of the jeans up because Pepper was so tall. It added a style mixture to the whole ensemble though. I was seventeen, I was capable of looking after myself, I had done it for a while now. So living on my own couldn't be that much different.
After I got ready I came back into the living room to find Pepper on her laptop, scrolling through all the videos. One catching my eyes. It was me standing on the balcony looking to dad, my whole body was covered in dirt and I looked honestly terrified. Dad was just raising his hand when I screamed to him. That didn't stop him and when Rhodey had hit the dad with the bench was when the video zoomed over to me. I looked like I was broken on the shaky video. Peppers hand went to her mouth in shock seeing what happened. And when she saw me coming over she closed the laptop.
"Hopefully when dad got hit, it knocked some sense into him," I said harshly as I made my way over to the front door I saw Pepper getting her things together. "Where are you off to?"
"Work, I have to handle this. There's going to be a lot of press today. But I was going to drop you off at the house, you wanted to go there." She grabbed her purse and gathered her papers along with her laptop. "I can give you a ride."
"No thanks," I shook my head, giving her a soft smile. "I... I got to do this on my own." She nodded understanding.
"I get it. Oh, I forgot to tell you. Tomorrow night Hammer is doing a presentation and I was wondering if you wanted to go with me?" I stopped reaching for the door thinking about it for a moment. Though I would rather look for an apartment here or be upset with everything, going to New York would probably be best. I would be able to escape for a few days even if it would be to Hammer's presentation.
"Sure," Was all I said before we both went our separate ways. I got a cab which Pepper graciously paid for, I hadn't any money on me because I didn't have the chance in all the chaos to grab my purse. Though it was still early I wanted to get it done, the sooner the better. Plus if I was lucky I wouldn't have to see dad, he could be passed out by a toilet bowl if I was lucky. The ride to the house was silent, despite the radio of the cab on low. It was a news station, and even when I had asked the driver to change it, the other station was discussing the festivities of last night.
Reaching the house I gave the money to the driver and left the car, not caring about the money I would be returned. The cab sped off and I walked up to the gate, proving my identity with Jarvis he allowed me entrance. I had been sure to tell Jarvis not to tell dad I was here, I didn't want to deal with him hungover, again. The damage to the house was extensive and I wasn't going to enjoy having to basically climb the house to get to my already destroyed room. Instead of going straight to my room I walked the house, seeing the damage that the two suits had done. There were holes in the walls that led straight into the exercise room, that was destroyed. The ring was dented severely and the weights were scattered, some were stuck in walls as if they had been thrown. I hated seeing my house like this. Clenching my hands I suddenly had to leave.
I climbed the stairs reaching my room only to stop before I fell through the floor. There was a meter wide hole in the center of my room. My anger flared seeing my bed on the floor, in pieces. My rug was gone, I don't know where it went, there were only scraps. I went back outside the room before I sprinted and jumped the hole sliding across the tile floor. I groaned laying there for a moment feeling all the pain from both the explosion last night and my thigh that had been acting up. I grabbed a duffel bag from on the side of my closet and stuffed some clothes into it, I could come back later for the rest. For now I was just grabbing things I would need for the trip.
After I grabbed everything I was walking around the room when I felt glass breaking under my shoe, looking down I saw what I had gotten my dad. Us, well a picture of us. Me in my graduation robe and him in a suit. He had his hand around my waist and I was holding my degree in hand. He had wanted the picture, and I got the reporter to give it to me. He had just asked in return to get a different picture, and we were able to take a different photo, though dad didn't know I had gotten the picture. Dad and I were both smiling in the picture, we were both so happy. I realized I had been crying when a tear fell onto the broken glass. Slowly I took out the photo of the frame and I put it in my laptop, to protect it. I wiped my eyes and I could feel that my face was red. I also saw that my face was red because there was a shattered mirror on the floor.
I had went to the kitchen and grabbed some keys, for a car that would be in the garage. And if dad was to be anywhere it would be there. Slowly I walked down the steps and saw the lights were dimmed. Hopefully I could get out of there quick without waking him. I entered in the code and was surprised that my birthday worked. Dad must have re-programed the codes to enter the garage with my birthday. Walking into the workshop I heard a tool drop and it caused me to jump and drop my bag. Dad. He had stopped what he was doing and was staring at me. I could feel the tension in the room increase exponentially. He had been working now, instead of trying to find me?
"Jaedyn," Him working was the last thing I had expected him to be doing. I wanted to leave back up the stairs and just call another cab, or I could handle this and get in the car. The room was silent as I felt his eyes on me, slowly I walked over to the black Audi and tossed my bag into the back seat. "Jaedyn can I talk, let me explain-"
"No!" I yelled spinning on a dime to face him.
"Jae..."
"I'm fine," I spoke, my voice strong when I spoke the first sentence. I said it a second time only for it to come out as a broken whisper. "I'm fine..." I felt lightheaded and this lump in my throat that wouldn't leave. My voice was caught in my throat and before I knew it I had acted against my mind. I walked over to dad's tools and searched for a crowbar, I was angry and he was going to get the brunt of it. I took the crowbar and held it tightly in my hand. I made my way over to the red mustang convertible we had worked on. I screamed again and hit the car shattering the windshield. Dad's eyes were wide now, seeing as I was completely freaking out on him. Again I hit the car with the crowbar swinging with all my might. I let out all my anger and frustration on this car, the windows were smashed, the hood was dented in. After the last swing I broke off the right car mirror and it was flung across the room. After I caught my breath I dropped the crowbar. The noise that the crowbar had made when it collided with the tile floor echoed through the room. I stared at him watching the cogs turn in his head, I had destroyed the car and showed him that I really wasn't okay. He was leaning on the table waiting for me to say something. I slowly walked back over to the table and looked to him. "Let me ask you something dad... Did you recognize me? When you almost Shot Me?" The look on my dad's face was a mix of emotions as I could hardly see straight I couldn't tell which was most prominent. "Did you recognize me?" This wasn't going to stop because this needed to be said, here and now. And I wasn't going to give him the chance to respond. I was going to say what I wanted to say and he was going to listen to what had to be said. "You destroyed the house, fought your best friend. And not only did you put everyone at the party in danger. You put My life in danger. I stood on that balcony and I watched you battle Rhodey, and when you knocked him out you turned to me. I- I didn't recognize who I was looking at, Iron Man or Tony Stark. You almost shot me."
"Jaedyn-"
"That shot would have killed me!" The color drained from his face and I felt even more lightheaded as I had exploded at him. I stepped away from him. "If Rhodey hadn't hit you with the bench, I wouldn't be here dad..." I took a deep breath putting my hands up shaking my head. "I'm done dad, I'm done."
"Jaedyn don't-" He stopped talking, and it was then that I heard his voice breaking as he spoke to me. "Just stay... please I'm sorry I can't lose you too." He began pleading with me, and he went to walk around the table he was at to come over to me.
"It's not just that dad, you've been different for the passed few months and you won't tell me why. You are the one who put this wedge between us not me. And I will bet you that Senator Stern has already gone to town with the story about last night. You remember what Senator Stern had threatened me with? Removing me from custody? Well it seems you wont have to put up with me much longer. Dangerous and reckless behavior wasn't that what Stern said?"
"Jaedyn I promised you I wouldn't let that happen..." He began and came over a few feet in front of me. "And I mean that, I won't let that happen."
"You might not get a say in it this time dad. You almost killing me with your repulsor? It's all over the internet. And all over the news. Last night was also a good reason for Senator Stern to take the suits away from you." I quickly rubbed my eyes and took a step back as he tried to come over towards me. "What would Grandma say? As she sees you destroying not only yourself but her granddaughter? You've tried to not become your father because you two didn't have a good relationship, but guess what. As of this moment right now, you've become worse than him..." My voice was showing that I was going to start crying as I had said the stuff about his parents. "I don't know who you are anymore. Iron Man." I saw his eyes close and I let the words hit deep and I saw his whole demeanor seem to show that he has been destroyed, I had broken him with what I had said.
"What can I do to fix this? What can I do for you to stay here with me? Jaedyn please..." I could hear the sincerity in what he was saying and the sadness behind his eyes, there were tears brimming in his eyes. He didn't want to lose me, and I didn't want to lose him as well. But I couldn't stand by and watch him destroy our home and almost hurt me. It was all too much. Plus my room was destroyed so I couldn't literally stay here. I will not watch him destroy himself, it would destroy me.
"Nothing. You can't get me to stay here, and I'm not sure what you can do to even fix this dad. You and Rhodey also destroyed my room so I can't stay here even if I wanted to. You can't just drink yourself til you pass out or until you forget what happened in your life. You have to face it. You say I need someone to talk to? But what about you?" I walked over to the car and opened the door. I stopped when I knew I wanted to say something that could really hit home. I grabbed my laptop from my bag and took out the picture I was going to give him. I looked at it and a smile flashed on my lips, better times. I shook off the memories and the tears filling my eyes before I walked over to dad and shoved the picture into his chest. My voice breaking when I spoke, "Happy Birthday." Shutting the car door I started the car and began to drive out of the garage. I could feel dad was regretting his actions and him being the way he was as of late. But it was a little too late. Everything had been said and nothing was going to change that. No amount of apologizes could change what happened.
I found myself stopping at the gate and staring in the rear view mirror at our house. I wanted to be numb to everything. I didn't want to hear anything. I spun the dial and started to blare some ACDC song, but all that did was remind me of dad. My hand found the gearshift and I changed it quickly flooring the pedal and I sped down the street. I bit my lip, tasting blood to keep myself from crying. Anger or sadness I didn't care I didn't want to know why I wanted to cry. Dad and I had fought before, every kid fights with their parents but not like that. We wouldn't be the same after this, I had no idea if we would ever be able to repair our relationship again.
