In a corn maze 🎃

Me and my family went to a corn maze one day at night, so kinda based off of that.
————————————————————————

Phil's POV

I grasped Dan's hand tightly in mine as we waited in line to pay for the corn maze. Fear was bubbling in my stomach as I looked over the map on the wall. It looked like a pretty large maze. Lots of different paths, lots of dead ends, lots of opportunities to get lost.

Dan of course, assured me we wouldn't get lost by saying we would have a map. This did little to calm my nerves as we're both horrible with directions.

We got up to the front desk and a man wearing a heavy coat smiled at us. "2 people?"

"Yes please," Dan replied.

"12.26 pounds please," He said as he clicked the numbers into his little cash register. "If you want to, on the side of your map there's monsters that are placed throughout the maze. If you find them all, there's a little prize for you."

I looked down at the map and saw little cartoon monsters, including zombies, vampires, and other classic scary creatures.

We paid, got a map, and started walking to the corn maze entrance. As it was already dark, we shone our flashlights in front of us to light the path. I couldn't help but glance at the corn as we walked by it, imagining what could pop out at any time. The field looked eery with each stalk of corn being separated by darkness.

We arrived at the entrance, and I got a bad feeling from the fact you could only see a few feet into the field, the rest hiding in darkness.

"Ready?"

I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sudden loud voice beside me. Everything was quiet, save the cold wind blowing through the dry corn, as all the rest of the costumers had probably gone to the smaller maze with their kids. "Y-yeah," I replied, trying to swallow my fear. Dan gave my hand a little squeeze. "C'mon Phil, we have a map, and if worse comes to worse, we can just follow the noise of the giant fan back to here."

Now that he said it, I noticed there was a large fan blowing, inflating up several bouncy castles a ways down the path. Slightly comforted by this, I walked into the maze with Dan following closely behind me, reading the map issuing his flashlight. "Okay, so this first fork.. turn left. Then right, right, left. I'll say the rest when we get to the last direction."

I nodded, my eyes wondering all around. The moon was behind the clouds, not providing much light. I shone my light into the corn wall near me but quickly turned it to the other side when I heard a noise. "Phil," Dan laughed, his flashlight illuminating his face, "chill out, you're okay."

His soft voice calmed me a bit, and I tried to enjoy the peace and quiet of the night. After awhile, I was laughing and talking with Dan, my fears almost completely gone. We had been in the corn maze for about half an hour. "See," Dan said, smiling at me, "this isn't so bad."

I laughed, thinking of how silly I had been earlier. Scared of a little corn maze. "Yeah," I said, kicking a piece of corn that had fallen. "This place isn't that scary."

Dan looked down at his map. "Alright, a left up ahead. I think we're about halfway through. It's funny though.." He trailed off, looking around. "We haven't seen a single monster character yet."

It was true, we hadn't discovered any monsters yet, and the guy made it sound like they would just be on signs placed in plain sight. For some reason, the strange observation made a chill go down my spine.

My senses now more aware, I noticed that the loud fan noise was almost completely gone. Meaning if we got lost, it would be hard to find the entrance. "You-you know where we're going still.. right?" I asked, willing my voice to sound normal but not being able to stop the small stutter.

Dan shrugged. "I'm just kinda guessing now to be honest. What's the point of doing a maze if you don't get lost?"

I stared at him, open mouthed. "The point is to get out!"

"Yeah but where's the fun if you do it in less than 2 hours? You don't get the full corn maze experience if you just whizz through it."

I loved Dan but sometimes I really hated his need for "the full experience" and "immersion". "But-but-but.." I stuttered, trying to think of something so he would at least try to keep us on the right path.

"No buts, just enjoy the experience."

I sighed, knowing as long as Dan had the map we would be doing this his way. A sudden idea popped into my mind. "Stay here," I said, trying not to giggle. "Let me go ahead around the bend and look to see if I can find any monsters."

Dan furrowed his brow, staring down at the map. "But I could just go with you and-"

"But I wanna find it," I whined, "pleeeeaaaasseeee?" I said in what I hoped was a cute innocent voice.

Dan sighed. "Oh alright, go on ahead. I'll try to figure out where we are."

Once he couldn't see my face, a mischievous grin spread on my face as I walked around the bend. I wasn't really going to look for monsters. Rather, I was looking for trouble. I turned off my flashlight then carefully stepped into the corn, trying to make as little noise as possible. Then I waited. After a minute or so, I heard Dan call, "Phil?" I didn't respond, but stifled my giggles. "Phil?" He called again, a hint of worry in his voice. A few foot steps. "Phil!" Now he was really worried. "C'mon Phil this isn't funny!" More footsteps, coming towards me. I saw through the corn he was on the path where I was supposed to be. He ran to the end of the path and looked down both turns. "Phil!" More panicked than ever. He ran past me and looked down the path he had been originally standing. I slowly creeped out and stood behind him.

"RAWR!!" I yelled as loud as I could.

Dan screamed and stumbled sideways into the corn. Laughing but also feeling slightly bad, I grabbed his hand and pulled him out. He was glaring.

"Not. Funny," he growled through his teeth, but I could tell he was fighting a sigh of relief.

I grinned playfully and looped my arm through his. "It had to be done. We're in a corn maze, at night."

He grumbled something but seemed to have given in to my simple logic. We walked on. "Did you figure out where we are?" I asked cheerfully, not as worried if we were lost. I was happy to enjoy any time with my boyfriend.

Dan was shining his flashlight on the map, his finger trailing around the paths. "Kinda. I think we have to continue going south to reach the exit, but I don't know the paths to get there."

I nodded and skipped along the path with Dan. I kept tripping, of course, and almost twisted my ankle a few times, but I was having fun. Dan would laugh every time I stumbled over something. "How is it," he said laughing, his eyes sparkling in the flashlight glow, "that you've tripped at least 10 times and I haven't once?"

"You completely fell over when I scared you," I quipped, grinning.

"That doesn't count," Dan groaned, rolling his eyes but still in a humored tone.

"Oh yeah?" I said in a mock challenging voice, "how about.. this!" I put my foot in front of his path, making him trip over it. He caught himself before he fell.

"Lester, you don't know what you've gotten yourself into," he said in a playful dangerous voice. I stuck my tongue out at him, shining my flashlight on my face so I knew he saw it. He leaped over at me and tried to push me into the corn. I dodged with a triumphant laugh. "You'll have to be quicker then that, Howell."

He shuffled in front on me, and I twirled around him but not before he stuck his leg out to the side. I shrieked and dropped my flashlight to put my arms in front of me to break my fall, but 2 arms were already wrapped around me. I looked up to see Dan staring down at me, his brown eyes sparkling with love and playfulness. He bent down and kissed me sweetly on the lips. I put my hands around his back, pulling myself up into the kiss more. It was a beautiful moment: two people in love, alone in a corn field with a gentle fall breeze blowing through it. The only sounds were of the crickets and the dry crinkling of the corn stalks.

All too soon the moment was over and I was once again laughing and dodging a smiling Dan from attacking me. His arms were now outstretched, trying to reach and tickle my sides. He lunged and I bolted, running as hard as I could and laughing. I heard Dan give chase after me, but I was the faster one. My flashlight beam was moving every which way with my pumping arm. After awhile I came to a stop, gasping for breath, a grin on my face. My grin disappeared when I didn't see Dan behind me. I shone my flashlight in a full circle around me, down every path, but no Dan.

"Dan?" I called loudly, trying not to sound afraid. He was probably just pranking me, waiting to get me back for scaring him. "Dan I know you're there, stop hiding." A breeze blew through the corn, but no other sound. "Alright," I said loudly, "I'm going to keep going on, with or without you."
Determined to not show Dan I was afraid, I continued walking on, using my phone as a compass to lead me south where Dan had said the exit was.

Sure I could get lost, but I could just ring up someone and have them- I looked down at my phone. No signal. "Are you freaking kidding me," I mutter under my breath. My only real reassurance for not getting lost was crushed and blown away by the cold wind. I shivered, wanting nothing more than to feel Dan's warm arms around me. I thought back to the kiss we had shared earlier. It seemed so far, so long ago now.

It must've been at least 20 minutes later when I heard a noise behind me. I gasped and whirled around, but it was only a varmint of some kind standing in the middle of the path. It quickly darted into the concealing shadows. I let out a sigh of relief, but still my heart was thumping in my chest. I heard another noise to my right. I rolled my eyes. "Get outa here, animal, I'm trying to-" but it wasn't an animal. In fact, it wasn't anything at all. There was nothing there.

I gulped and tried to not panic.

It was probably just a piece of corn falling.

But what if it wasn't?

Don't be ridiculous, there's no such things as monsters.

There's such things as murders.

Murders? Get your head on straight-

But whatever logical thought I had left was quickly being overruled by the fears in my head.

Monsters, killers.

Don't run, don't panic-

What was that? It sounded close..

Stay calm and think for a-

Its getting closer. Run. Now.

Don't run, you're okay-

Run, now.

Stop! Don't run, there's nothing-

RUN!! ITS BEHIND YOU!!

I ran as fast as I could, getting more and more scared the faster I did. My heart was hammering in my chest. I imagined arms reaching out to grab me, pulling me to where no one would find me. I would never see my family again, I would never see my friends again, I would never see my fans again.

I would never see Dan again.

A horrible image appeared in my face of Dan white with fear trying to scream and get out of the monsters grasp, but its hand was around his mouth as it dragged him away. Tears were streaming down my face, wether with fear or the deep longing to see Dan. I turned and looked behind me, not stopping my run. There was a figure running after me, getting closer. I felt my stomach drop and couldn't even scream. I only willed my legs to go faster. There was a stitch in my side. I couldn't go on for much longer. But I had to. I had to escape so I could get out of here and find Dan, rescue him from the monsters.

If he wasn't already dead.

I cried out as I came to a dead end. I closed my eyes tight as I ran through the corn, the dead corn scratching my arms and face. As I burst through to the other side, I stumbled and fell, my flashlight rolling away. I crawled backwards on my hands and knees, sobbing as the figure walked through the corn. I tried to get up, but my legs were not moving. My breathing was coming out in gasps. "Please- don't hurt- no, stay away-" I screamed as the shadowed figure I emerged out of the corn. I curled up into a ball, squeezing my eyes shut and tensing every muscle for whatever the creature was going to do.

But it didn't come.

Instead, two warm hands grabbed my face, smearing the tears on my cheeks.

"Phil, love," a soft and worried voice said. I opened my eyes, recognizing that voice. I saw the outline of Dan, kneeling by my side. As my eyes adjusted, I was able to make out more details. The familiar brown eyes were staring into my eyes with concern. "D-Dan?" I managed to whisper, my throat dry.

"It's just me," he whispered, sitting and bringing me up into his lap. I flung my arms around him, burying my face into his chest. I breathed in his familiar scent, calming down my racing heart and ragged breathing.

"Are you okay?" He asked softly, rocking me slightly. I only sighed, wanting to cherish the feeling of being safe in his arms. "I didn't mean to scare you so badly.. I was only trying to get you back for scaring me. I didn't actually expect you to continue on. I saw your flashlight beam and navigated through the corn to get to you. Then when I did see you, you ran, and I dropped my flashlight chasing after you. Are you hurt?" He asked, lifting my chin to meet my face and his. His whole face was clouded with worry, and I couldn't help but let a small smile break on my dry lips.

"I am now," I say, leaning up to kiss him. He does so without hesitation, hugging me closer to him even tighter. My heart beats in my chest at a normal pace, now at peace that Dan was here and safe. Our lips were like a puzzle, fitting together in just the right away to create harmony. We broke apart, Dan's hand wiping under my eyes.

"Dry your pretty little eyes," he says lovingly, "they never deserve to have tears in them."

I smile and wrap my arms around him once more. "Can we go home?" I ask, nuzzling my nose into his coat. He stands up, carrying me with some difficulty. I close my eyes and appreciate the man holding me in his arms. He meant no harm bringing us here, but if he had only listened to what I said.. I smiled. He was so ignorant sometimes, but still a good boyfriend: ready to pick and make right whatever mess he created.

"We had some fun here," I think to myself, as I sway in his arms. "but next time I'll pass on the corn maze and go in the bouncy castle."
