Chapter 7
We were led to the town of Kabul it was a nasty place. About a mile and a half we were there. They yanked the cover off my head and I was about to beat them when something made me not do it. Feelings inside me that I don't understand. They made us look like them. I had to wear a cloak called a chai it had sleeves and the cap covered your head I looked ridiculous.
They made the boys work in the fields and the girls work in the houses. Toby was still by my side and the men that took us away, were Taliban they did it and that's what made me stop on my tracks. They let all the animals go, but Toby wasn't going to leave he snapped at them when the men grabbed him on the back of his neck, the men were going to shoot him I hugged Toby and told him he needed to go. Toby understood and he whimpered then walked slowly away with his tail limp, and head down.
They took me to a house, the houses were sand and rock. The men walked away. I opened the door but before I did. I took a deep breath and now went in. It was a one room house and right in the doorway was a man who had a beard that grew from his chin all the way down to the floor.
I said in my head dude you need to trim your hair or else you're going to step on it and, there no mama coming to save you when you're flat on the floor crying. It's pretty funny if you ask me. The man then pointed to a kitchen and there pots and pans stacked up, he yelled some words at me, that I could not understand.
" Right I'll do they right away," I sounded unsure.
I walked to the kitchen and noticed a huge stack of pot and pans I laughed
"wow someone must love to cook and they sure do eat a lot."
I began washing away. I took soap that was made from cow skin. (Yes people do that.) I scrubbed each pot and pan, there had to be at least 20 pots and 20 pans it was a ton. I hated the job. Then once I was done with all of the dishes I was exhausted, and my arm began to cramp as if, I fell off a horse. A knock was at the door and I glanced at where the noise came from. The man was nowhere in site. I raced to the door and no one was there. Is this my chance to be free?
Should I fleet away? Maybe I should, maybe I shouldn't? Besides if I run away there is going to be a Taliban that will attack me and probably shoot me. Fine I'm doing it. I took a step so I was out of the house but still holding on to the door knob. I took a deep breath I let go and started running. I then got tired and walked around town. I had no money so that didn't help me any. Suddenly about 2 Taliban were walking past me there heads weren't covered but my head was. I needed to find people who spoke English I looked around shops and streets and said
"do you speak English?"
Sometimes I didn't have to say that and I finally gave up.
I sat in the street peacefully. Just then Toby came running up to me. I figured he would come find me. Toby then started barking and running a few feet. I heard Taliban behind us and we both started sprinting up to somewhere I'm guessing to that ugly house. We did find that ugly house and went in. I saw a man sleeping on the floor we did the same thing and as I started to lay down my stomach began to growl.
The man turned over and gave a couple of grumbles then was silent. I couldn't let my stomach starve for peat sacks. I got up and found the kitchen I saw a white cabinet just above a pot of water which I believe was there sink. I opened the cabinet and found quite some delicious food. I found a plate with some kind of yellow rice and a shish kabob with chicken, a cut tomato and some other weird white sauce on the side. I didn't take to eat. There was a dish right next to it and had a bread rolls and green stuff on top it which looked like an egg roll.
I loved egg rolls and I tried it they were out if this world. I ate about 2 and got full. I found a bag to take some with me and I put the rest in there. Toby then started whining. He pawed at my leg and I told him to be quiet. It wasn't working. To shut him up I shoved a piece of the chicken in his face. He grabbed it from my hand and then I got really close to his face and put my finger up to my mouth and
Hissed "shhh"
Grumble yawn I heard the man get up so, I quickly but quietly shut the cabinet and hid in a closet with Toby. He screamed a couple of words in the nasty old language that I call trash talk or undesirable language that you do not speak to an American. The man I thought was sleepwalking or I thought he had way too much vodka. I heard something go whack then click. For a moment I heard no movement I crept out of the closet and Toby was panting. I walked around the place and found the man nowhere in the house.
"Yes I'm free," I screamed.
I tried to open the door but found it locked. Errrr I'm so mad I could spit. Pulling the door didn't help, neither was picking at the lock. Then I found some matches and lit it, I put it on the wooden door and let it burn, burn baby burn, of course the smoke didn't help. The door fell, I filled a bucket of water and took out the fire. Toby and I ran out of there as fast as we could. We sprinted and sprinted then my breathing went up and Toby was ahead of me. So I did a jog we were far away where no one else saw us. I heard people yelling from a distance away. I didn't care. Tears then came down from my eyes I been here too long and wanted to see mom.
"Psssst hey Alina"
I came to a halt and glanced at where the voice came from there I found Tim sitting on a rock. I went up to him and hugged him. Thank goodness I wasn't alone. Toby licked Tim's face and he wasn't expecting it.
"Toby stop it" I yelled and pulled Toby away.
"Sorry" I apologized
"No no it's fine"
"Come let's go to my place," Tim coaxed.
We walked for a long time then came up to this military base. There were marines everywhere.
We went in and I saw a horse tied up and I immediately walked up to her to let her sniff my hand.
"hi boy or girl who ever you are." I squealed.
I petted it down the neck and scratched it tiny forelock. Tim came over and said this here is May she is owned by a friend of mine named Joe.
"What kind of horse is she?" i questioned.
"Um I think she's a mustang," replied Tim.
"She loves people even dogs," said Tim.
"Hi May," I softly said rubbing it in the nose.
The horse nickered.
"Can I ride her," I asked.
"it's not my horse but you can ask my buddy over there Joe cleaning his weapon."
Tim went over to Joe while I studied the horse. She was this golden brown and her main shined in the sun. He tail sleek and long almost touching the ground. Her eyes were gentle and sweet. Tim and Joe headed over to me and they talked about putting me up on May. Okay you really want to ride her asked Joe.
"Yes," I begged. "Alright then"
Joe lead me to this huge arena. It wasn't anything different. Joe stopped the horse.
I set my foot in the stirrup and I could already feel the sensation in my body lifting me up. I was glad to be back on a horse again. Joe led me around the horse arena and Toby was trotting next to us.
"sir we need you," said a marine walking up to Joe.
Joe asked if Tim could lead me around but I asked if I could do it myself.
Joe said "you go girl but remember you ask Tim if you want to do anything else on the horse" ,and with that he left
