Peter Benjamin Parker surely did not expect that he was going to die within the next month. But such is life. Everyone dies eventually, it's just a matter of how and when. When Peter thought of the hundreds of possible ways he could perish, being sacrificed to the outside was no where on that list.
The outside... What a dreadful place.
-Final chapter-
Twenty one students had come on this field trip. Not even so much as four survived. Not even three, not even two... one. One person survived.
Maybe things would have been different. Maybe, there was a chance that at least two of them could have survived. But was there really anything left to fight for? Everyone was dead. Deadly walkers were everywhere, and aside from them, there were now mutant animals crawling around who knows where.
Peter was no longer afraid. He had no reason to be. He wasn't afraid of death, he had no urge to survive this place anyways. So as the warehouse crumbled around him, he was calm. He didn't have high hopes, there was nothing he could lose at this point anyways. MJ was gone. Ned was gone. How badly did the world need Spider-Man?
"Cover your heads!" Iisan boomed as the ceiling fell around them. The deadly walkers were no longer Peter's biggest problem. He'd have to worry about them later if he didn't get crushed to death by a pile of rubble. But again, he really didn't care.
It was loud. Horribly loud. The deadly walkers were screeching in anger as massive chunks of cement came barreling down on their heads. Peter ducked, as if that would protect him from the disaster around him.
He felt a particularly heavy chunk of cement strike him in the back and he fell forward, being crushed to the ground. Not even a yard away from him was Lauren's dead body being buried in the debris.
And then it was quiet. All he could hear was what little remained of the deadly walkers moaning and screeching in anger. The dust settled. Peter couldn't move. The chunk of cement that had hit him wasn't the only thing pinning him down now. It was like his Sophomore homecoming night all over again.
His nervous system felt like it had been lit aflame. His ribs were definitely broken, and perhaps his spin was as well—he couldn't really tell. It was hard to breathe. In fact, his lungs aches whenever he did so, which even then, was a huge struggle.
He mustered up the strength to try and move. After several failed attempts, he finally got he hands underneath him for support. He pushed against the ground, raising his body just slightly.
Pain flooded his senses. His eyes darted to the most prominent source of it, and he felt his heart drop. He couldn't believe it. It didn't feel real, what he was seeing. He didn't know what to do, so he just resumed his previous position of helplessness. He began to cry.
A large piece of a metal rafter had skewered his body.
"Is everyone alright?" he heard Corvan ask anxiously. He sounded like he was in pain too. No one answered him for a while. Peter was afraid that if he opened his mouth, blood would spew up from his lungs.
"Corvan?" Iisan's voice finally interrupted the sound of the deadly walker's who were in pain.
"Iisan!" Peter saw Corvan rush up to Iisan who was buried in some debris. He helped to uncover him and got him out successfully on his own.
"Oh my god I'm so glad you're ok!" Iisan went to hug Corvan but, as he had been for the past hour now, Corvan was much too hot to touch and Iisan nearly burned himself. "You haven't cooled down yet?"
"I can't get it to stop." Corvan's voice trembled.
"Corvan?" Peter heard Terrance's voice, though he sounded weak.
"Terrance!" Corvan and Iisan said in unison.
"Terrance where are you?!" Iisan called out.
"Right here."
Iisan's eyes landed on Terrance's crumpled figure. He immediately rushed to him with a worried look on his face, terrified of what had happened to the boy.
"Oh my god-" Iisan choked out.
"I'm ok- I'm ok- just stuck." Terrance assured. Meanwhile Peter still couldn't muster up the courage to speak.
"Help me get him out, Corvan." Iisan said and the two began shifting pieces of metal and cement away from Terrance's frail figure. But to their dismay, he was trapped in such a way it would be impossible to move him out. Even with Iisan's powers, Terrance was stuck.
One of the metal rafters had fallen over Terrance's back. It was long, and on either side of it, cement weighed it down, making it impossible to budge. Not even Iisan could, which seemed ironic since he'd been the one to destroy the ceiling in the first place.
The sky. Peter hadn't seen it in so long. The sun must have been setting, but the sky was still bright. There was too much light for Iisan to use his powers which relied on the dark.
"Come on, come on!" Iisan grunted, trying to desperately get the rafter to budge. "Move already damn it!"
"Don't worry about me. Where's Peter?" Terrance asked.
"You can't fucking tell me that! You're not going to die here! I'm getting you out!" Iisan argued.
"Iisan, where is Peter?" Terrance reiterated.
"He didn't answer when I called." Corvan said. "Maybe he's unconscious."
Peter desperately made a sound. He wanted them to know he was alive. He couldn't move. He couldn't get out. He couldn't do anything. He felt uselessly helpless.
No one heard him. Peter felt his eyes begin to sting with tears which trickled down his cheeks.
"God this is all my fault!" Iisan said, falling to his knees beside Terrance. "I'm so stupid. I-"
"Stop that." Terrance said. "You're ok."
"What if Peter is dead?!" Iisan exclaimed. "Or if you die because of this?!"
"You're alright." Terrance smiled softly. "It's alright Iisan. It'll be ok."
"Everyone is dead..." Corvan said to himself. "Is it even possible to get out of this place?"
"Of course it is." Terrance said positively. He was masking pain. Something had happened and he knew he would die. "We'll get out of here, I promise."
"They're still alive." Iisan muttered. "The deadly walkers are-"
They heard a loud screech. In the distance of the warehouse, a figure began crawling towards them. It's legs were broken, so it couldn't stand. But still, it posed just as much of a threat as it did when it had the use of legs. This time, they had the chance to escape it. Perhaps.
"Fuck!" Iisan screamed and returned his attention to Terrance. "We- we-" he tried moving the rafter again, desperate and terrified. And that's when Peter realized something. These three still had a reason to fight on. They wanted to survive still, why else would they try so hard to get Terrance out from under the rafter? Peter had lost his ability to care about himself, or even those around him. What he truly lost was his hope.
Students may be harmed.
"Come on, come on! PLEASE!" Tears fell from Iisan's face as he desperately tried moving the rafter off of Terrance.
Wish me luck!
"Iisan, it's fine." Terrance said, reaching up for him.
"It's not fine! I'm not losing you when I have you right here!" Iisan exclaimed. "You're the one person I've ever loved. I'm not going to just- let you go! I'm not- I can't-"
Dr. Braunt is going to kill Michelle Jones.
"How is that thing still alive?" Corvan whimpered. Peter could practically feel the heat the boy was emitting even from how far apart they were.
"Iisan," Terrance said and grabbed the boy's hand to bring him back to the real world, "I'm fine."
"No!" Iisan exclaimed. "None of this is fine!" Terrance kissed Iisan's knuckles.
It'll all be over soon.
"Terrance... I can't..."
"I can do it." Corvan said. "I mean- I can fix this. I think."
"With what?" Iisan asked.
"I can... probably heat the rafter to make it soften so we can putt Terry out from it." Corvan said. "It's desperate, and it'll seriously burn Terrance really badly but... I don't think there's many other options."
"Perhaps..."
"No." Terrance said. "You're already losing control of your power, I can feel it. You've been raising dangerously in temperature for over an hour now, and if it doesn't stop-"
"I'll be fine." Corvan grit. "This is the only choice we have. Unless you'd prefer I let that thing eat you alive?"
"You're not sacrificing yourself for me." Terrance said sternly.
"It's not a sacrifice, I'll be alright."
"Are you sure?"
"Brace yourself." Corvan said without answering Terrance. He placed his hands on the beam to start heating it up. His sweat was evaporating from his own skin, the heat was so intense. And Terrance looked like he had been sitting outside on a hot summer's day working out with how much sweat he'd built up from being close to Corvan.
Iisan remained holding Terrance's hand, though he was also getting uncomfortably hot. The metal around Corvan's hands began to change from a rusty grey to a bright hot orange which began to glow dimly. Terrance placed his forehead on the ground, his muscles tensing from the intense heat.
Peter felt tired. He wanted to just fall asleep to hope that he didn't wake back up. He couldn't feel his pain anymore. Was this what death was like?
Students may be harmed.
He could hardly focus on himself though. His attention was on the other three. They had a chance to survive and they wanted to get out so bad that they were willing to hurt themselves in order to get out of harms way.
Peter on the other hand, was not. In fact, he now yearned for death. He wanted to be with MJ again. He wanted to build Lego fortresses with Ned. He wanted to hold MJ's hand while watching nerdy movies. He wanted to listen to Ned info dump on him about the avengers and geek out over Star Wars.
Wish me luck!
Ned was gone, and so was MJ. The only logical solution was for Peter to join them.
Dr. Braunt is going to kill Michelle Jones.
"AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!" Terrance yelled in anguish. His skin was almost smoking, the metal rafter burning his very flesh due to Corvan's powers. The metal began to bend under Corvan's finger tips, and slowly, he was able to bend it ever so slightly off of his brother's body.
Iisan immediately pulled him out and cradled him in his arms. Corvan staggered back and fell, his body radiating like that of a thousand suns.
"Terrance!" Iisan kissed the boy's forehead. "Oh thank god. You're alright. I've got you." He said, hugging him like it was the last time he ever would.
"It hurts." Terrance muttered and Iisan loosened his grip. Terrance of course, was still shirtless. And his giant burn mark was beyond just a change of color in the skin. His flesh was seared and bubbly, the skin burned away in his lower abdomen completely. He couldn't bleed from the area because of how bad the burn was.
"Shit." Iisan mumbled.
"What about... Corvan?"
"Corvan?!" Iisan's eyes darted back to the blond's direction. Corvan groaned in response. Iisan carefully got up with Terrance and aproached the boy who's flesh raged like an oven- no- it was hotter than that. It was unbearably hot. "Are you alright?"
"I'm fine... I'm..." Corvan was still laying flat on his back.
His clothes were now full of burn holes and the polyester of his binder—which flattened his chest—seemed to have melted to his skin. His glasses had melted as well, all that remained of them was a few black splotches burned onto Corvan's cheeks. His earrings had also melted away and burned up his ears.
"I'm not fine." Corvan choked out. "I'm sorry-"
"Are you still heating up?" Terrance asked worriedly.
"It won't stop." Corvan said, beginning to cry. "It won't stop Terry. It hurts." His tears evaporated from his eyes just as his sweat di from his body. "It hurts so bad. I- I can't make it stop."
"Do you have any suppressants here?" Iisan asked (referring to medication a mutant might take to help control their powers).
"I- I did." Corvan stuttered. "But they were taken away when we got here. I- I'm sorry."
"I told you not to do that." Terrance said with tears in his eyes now too.
"Your binder is burning you," Iisan said and say Terrance down so he could help Corvan. He put his hands near Corvan's chest.
"D-don't touch!" Corvan exclaimed. "I don't want you to get hurt!"
"I don't want you to get hurt either." Iisan said and moved his hands under Corvan's body. He sat the boy up, biting his lip to ignore the pain of touching him. Even from where Peter distantly lay, dying, he could see the burns forming on Iisan's hands and wrists.
"Iisan!" Corvan yelped.
"It's ok." Iisan assured. He removed what little remained of the shirt Corvan wore, trying to work the binder off of him.
"It not going to come off-" Corvan said.
"I'm still going to try." Iisan said with beads of sweat dripping off of him. If he stayed too close to Corvan any longer, he could die from the heat. It was evident by the look on his face that he knew that, but was willing to risk that.
Those three were close. They had each other to root for and protect. Peter was left with nothing. It was just taking him a long while to die on his own.
"AAAHH!" Corvan screamed as his skin started ripping away when Iisan moved the binder. Iisan let go immediately.
"You're right, it's not coming off." He said. "Shit. What do we do? This doesn't usually happen right?"
"I normally have suppressants." Corvan says. "And when I don't, I don't try using my ability."
"You've pushed it too far then." Terrance said.
"For you." Corvan replied. "I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I let you die."
"Corvan-"
"I'm willing to melt something as tough as tungsten if it meant saving your life." Corvan said.
"Corvan stop! You're not-"
"I'm alright Terry." Corvan said. "That's what you were saying earlier, now it's my turn."
Peter noticed the deadly walker getting closer to them. How had it moved so fast in such little time? Peter wanted to alert them but no sound came past his lips.
"No it's not! You're not- Corvan?" Terrance's expression faltered. "Corvan?"
"Hey, Corvan," Iisan hesitantly shook Corvan's shoulder. Peter could really see the state of Corvan's eyes, but if he could, he was sure there would be no life found in them.
"Corvan?!" Terrance yelped. He pushed past Iisan and gripped Corvan by the shoulders. "Say something!"
"Terry-" Iisan said but Terrance cut him off.
"Corvan! Answer me! Please! Please Corvan, PLEASE!" Terrance shouted but Corvan made no response. "No, you can't leave me like this! We're almost out of here just hang on a little longer!"
"I'm sorry Terry..." Iisan said, pulling Terrance back.
"No! No! Corvan please! Say something! PLEASE! YOU CAN'T BE GONE! NOT WITH ME STILL HERE!" Terrance sobbed. "YOU CAN'T LEAVE ME ALONE!"
"I'm sorry Terr." Iisan said, hugging Terrance from behind. Terrance continued to sob. All the while the deadly walker continued it's approach.
"M..m..." Peter whimpered.
He wanted to say something. They still had a chance to live. They had a life after this. Peter wouldn't let that be taken away from them just because he no longer craved a life to live.
"M... m.... M..." Peter sputtered. "Move... move..." he was too quiet. He tried again. "M-m... m-move..."
They couldn't hear him.
"M-move!" Peter raised his voice. They both raised their heads, having finally heard him. "Move!"
Iisan jerked his head around to see the deadly walker just in time before it attempted to strike him down with it's oddly long tongue. Iisan rolled to the side, taking Terrance with him. The deadly walker screeched with irritation.
"Peter?!" Iisan exclaimed. "You're alive?!"
Peter could respond. Life seemed to be moving slowly and his mind began to fall loose of understanding. Nothing made sense anymore, as if you couldn't hear Iisan's words.
"Come on Iisan-" Terrance said urgently. Iisan began quickly guiding him in Peter's direction as fast as he could with the deadly walker in tow.
"Get through the wall Terrance. I'll take care of Peter and catch up to you."
No. Just leave me. You don't understand, I'm not coming with you.
"I can't just-"
"Go! Now!" Iisan demanded. Terrance reluctantly obliged. Iisan tried shifting the cement off of Peter's body. Peter tried wading him off but Iisan was persistent.
"S-s...stop..."
"I know it hurts you just have to fight through it." Iisan said, gritting his teeth.
"No..." Peter groaned and Iisan finally saw what had happened to him. The metal rafter was still pierced straight through a great chunk of his abdomen. He shouldn't have survived so long. Perhaps it was that radioactive spider that kept him alive for so long.
"Oh god..." Iisan mumbled.
"Go..." Peter said. "You can make it."
"I-" Iisan was frozen in place and the deadly walker was gaining on them.
"Please.., g... get out... away... pl.. please."
The deadly walker screeched and shot it's tongue out at Iisan. Iisan's eyes went wide in surprise as the tongue itself skewered through his back, splitting through the center of his bare chest. Blood splattered down his abdomen, and the deadly walker looked pleased with itself.
"N-no..." Peter whimpered as the monster lifted Iisan off of the ground. Iisan just looked at his own chest in shock, not registering what had happened to him.
Peter had no energy left. No will to cry. No will to get up and save the boy. He simply couldn't. There was no way to reverse what had just happened.
The dead walker dropped Iisan to the floor and moved over top of him. Iisan was now gasping for air like a fish out of water. The deadly walker tore at his skin and punctured more holes in his body with it's tongue, all in front of Peter.
Peter felt tired. He was exhausted and hopeless. The rafter being lodged in his body was what stopped him from bleeding so fast, but by now, his head was spinning from the blood loss and he could hardly feel his body.
His eyes felt heavy. He was ready to just fall asleep. Maybe when he woke up, he'd be back at home in Queens, with Aunt May in their apartment waiting for him. And Ned would be alive, and MJ would be too.
That would be nice.
So if it wasn't a dream, then what happens next? Peter felt his life slowly dispute from his lips and after that, he didn't know what to make of things. He didn't know what had happened.
Terrance was alive. Terrance was the one survivor.
Peter was with his friends now. He missed Ned a lot, so he looked forward to waking up and going back to school with him. That what Peter though at least. He didn't exactly know what would happen after death.
But it was peaceful. An end to the torment. He was free to relax again. No stress of being a hero and worrying for people's lives. No more anxiousness revolving around college acceptance. No more struggle. It was all over.
And it was good.
End.
A/n
Finally it's over. I hope this was worth reading for you all.
I was going to do some art for this chapter but decided against it because I had other projects to work on. Plus, I probably would have made myself draw Corvan's death and that one is just... really sad to me...
If you liked this then you may be interested to know that these characters are part of a book I've been planning. I've never really used them for anything so this was a good way for me to practice writing them and their individual characteristics. The book will be titled, Lunch Wall Heroes (for now at least), and if it gets published one day- then it gets published idk.
I have another book I actually HAVE finished writing titled, Land of Armonia, but my internship boss is still reading and editing it so it won't be officially published for a while until that's done. When it is, it'll likely be on Amazon so make sure you follow this and/or my other account (ArtCatastrophe )for updates about that. Yay.
Anyways this was a hell of a fic to write and we can blame it all on my friend for sleeping in a few weeks ago while they were at my house. This is all their fault.
I hope I made you cry. That is my only goal in life. >:)
-Peter
