Mind
The human mind is truly the scariest thing of all.
It is within the mind where the darkest wishes are formed.
It is with help of the mind that the darkest acts are committed.
It is within the mind where rules don't exist, a place where time is but an idea. A place that can be as empty as a vacuum in space, or as full as the Pacific Ocean. Thoughts and memories filtering through, passing through long dark halls, searching for a room where they can reside.
The mind, Peter thinks, is the worst villain out there.
It is three in the morning, the sun went to sleep a while ago. Yet he is unable to sleep, his mind is full, of what? He doesn't know, a dozen possibilities, a dozen memories. Some of which are good and spark a slight warmth in his chest, before the spark can turn to a flame it is doused by a terrible one. His body shakes with the cold that settles on his skin causing goose bumps. It isn't the cold of the night however, he's huddled under blankets trying but failing to get the chill to leave his veins.
In and out Parker just breathe in and out
The mantra plays on repeat within his mind, but the sound is lost behind the screams of those he couldn't save. The screams that reach such a volume that he has to cover his ears. Hands pressed firmly to the sides of his head, it hurts but it helps.
He isn't crying, at least he doesn't feel the warm tears. He doesn't taste the familiar salt on his lips as the physical expressions of emotion leave tracks down his pale skin. He doesn't feel it, because it's not there. His body ran out of tears, but his soul is crying, releasing the tears he wishes he could spill. It always helps, even just for a moment when the tears are uncaged and the emotions are set free.
It starts to become too much and he's begging for it to stop. Even begging for it to kill him, but then he's washed with another wave of guilt as he remembered that death doesn't happen to you. It happens to people around you.
He clenches his jaw shut tight, to prevent the screams he's dying to let roar from his mouth. He doesn't want to wake up the one person who cares for him, in a parental sense.
It feels like years before it slows down, all of it at once. His breathing, the memories, the tears his soul is crying and the sounds of his own heart. His own heart which was beating almost as loudly as the screams.
The screams, he remembers them the most. They pierced holes in his heart that he knew would never heal. Not completely. He could've done better, should've done better.
(Flash back)
"Help" a light cry, it echoed through the speakers built into his suit. The armor that protected him and allowed him to protect others. His muscles pulled taught as he swung, dropping just low enough to feel the rush before he shot a web out and swung back up.
"Approaching destination, enter the building up ahead" Karen's robotic voice rang out. He followed her instructions and dropped in through a window. He hit the ground in a crouch and looked up, the sight that greeted him would stain his vision for the rest of his life. It was the picture of what he could've saved, who he should've saved.
Families, dozens of them. Tied up in the center of the empty warehouse. He was too busy thinking of how basic all the villains were, always using warehouses, to notice the fire. The red and yellow flames that sped up, shooting towards its targets. The smoke which caused many of them to cough blinded him. He pushed forwards, grabbing the first person he could find. It was a little girl, her Cinderella shirt slightly mottled, with what he hoped was just dirt. His hands moved without thinking, removing the binding around her petite wrists. Her hands were freed as the first screams rang out, exploding in the otherwise silent space.
He hurried and released the rest of what looked like the girls family, pushing them towards the door. He sprinted to the second family, almost falling with the speed. He wasn't going to make it, he was too slow and there were too many of them.
He got four families out that night, the other eight were burnt. Their screams of pure pain were the only thing he knew.
(Flash back end)
He knew he could've done better but he didn't, he spent too much time thinking of the stupid things. Ignoring the danger that was in front of his face, screaming at him to listen.
"Help please" the screams that rattled in his skull got quieter. Eventually fading, this was the worst part, when the screams stopped it wasn't because the people were safe. The screams stopped because they were gone, gone to a place where he was helpless. He couldn't bring them back, he couldn't bring his mother back, or his father, or his uncle. So he sure as hell couldn't bring eight families back.
His body stopped shuddering, eventually deciding on just shaking. Ever so slightly, as uneasiness crept on his skin. He couldn't fall asleep, the time read five twenty seven am. He couldn't sleep.
So he did what he always does, he sat up and took a breath. Slowly pushing himself to stand on weak legs, and stumble out the door. Eyes slightly blurred from a mix of exhaustion and grief. The walls tilted precariously, causing him to trip.
The ground that seemed so far suddenly met his face in a shock of pain. Or it would be pain, instead it felt like relief. If I can't save them I can endure the pain they did. He was reminded of this every time he tripped, or the webs snapped and he tumbled, everytime he accidentally grabbed a hot pan or tool.
He contemplated staying there, laying in a heap on the floor. Before he could make up his mind he was lifted up into a pair of arms. The arms were warm, and there were words being spoken. It seemed like he was being asked questions but he didn't know how to answer them.
What happened?
Are you ok?
Please come back to me. No I can't come back, those families can't come back.
Peter, yes you can you did everything you could. You are one man, kid and there were twelve families. Even getting four out was amazing.
His eyes focused on their own and he took in the familiar setting. The walls were painted a dull grey but the red and gold accents made up for the lack of emotion. I need some red and gold. He thought before turning his attention to the people in front of him.
On his left was a familiar redhead, she was smiling gently at him. The smile was a complete contrast to her character, but it was one reserved for those she loved.
Natasha
To the right of her was a bigger man. His muscles showing through his skin tight shirt, his face displayed pity and fear.
Steve
On his very right was a man with glasses covering his eyes. He was smiling as well, but this smile was used to disguise the curiosity and worry resonating within him.
Bruce
To this man's left was another man, he had long hair that was silky and looked smooth. He smiled with knowing eyes, he didn't show pity he showed understanding. Of course he would he'd been in the same place not too long ago.
Bucky
In the middle of all of them and directly in front of Peter was a man with a glowing chest. The cool blue glow brightened the slightly dim space. His mouth was moving and his eyebrows furrowed. His touch on Peter's wrists was barely noticeable until he looked down.
Tony
"Talk to me Peter" he said, a hint of desperation in his voice.
"I-" was all Peter could force out. He was too exhausted to finish his thought, if he knew what his thought was.
"It's ok, you don't have to rush. I'm here for you" the man stood up, as the others moved. The couch dipped under his weight and Peter's body followed. Slumping down until his head was on Tony's lap.
His feet were picked up by the man with long hair, Bucky and the other three sat on the armchairs.
He fought sleep, had been fighting sleep for a while. Ever since it happened, but now, with people around him he felt his eyes becoming heavy. Until they shut all together, he slipped into darkness with the words.
