Not Enough
When you first started dating Peter Parker, you were on cloud nine.
The secret kisses in the hallways before class, the little notes you'd pass each other at lunch, studying together in the library while holding hands. The homework dates where the two of you would spend more time cuddling and eating snacks than actually doing work. The days spent in Central Park talking about everything and nothing all at the same time.
You remembered the first time he had told you he loved you.
"Peter, are you paying attention?" You asked, noticing that Peter was in a daze. He was staring at you.
"Huh, what?" He asked, realizing you had caught him entranced. You rolled your eyes and threw a pillow at him.
"Peter, this is important! I wanna tell this guy how I feel!" You cried, getting up and pacing. Peter watched you sadly, angry with himself for not telling you how he felt.
And now it was too late.
"He's amazing, Peter. I really like him, but I don't think he likes me back." You whispered, and Peter could feel his heart contract. He reached up and gently pushed the hair out of your eyes.
"Anyone would like you, he'd be a fool not to." He whispered back, and the air felt heavy with emotions.
"Thanks, Peter. I think I'm ready to tell him now." You said, giving him a hug. Peter inhaled the scent of your shampoo, his favorite smell in the world. His face fell, but he didn't let you see.
"Oh, okay. You can borrow my phone if you want." He replied, watching you bite your lip to keep from smiling.
"Actually, I don't have to use a phone to tell him I like him. See, the guy is you Pete. I like you." You said, suddenly shy around him. Peter's jaw dropped, not believing what you had just said.
This was his dream come true.
"Are you serious?" He asked, not wanting to get his hopes up. You nodded, laughing as he jumped on top of you. Your faces were mere inches away as you kissed his nose sweetly.
"Y/N Y/L/N, I don't like you. I love you. I've loved you forever and I will love you forever." Peter said, smiling when you smiled up at him. Your heart burst with happiness, staring up at the boy you loved.
"I love you too, Peter. I love you so much." You sighed, relieved that it was over. Your feelings were out in the open and you preferred it that way. Peter wiggled his eyebrow, and brought his face closer to you.
"Okay, then kiss me." He teased, and you brought your lips to his.
But then you suddenly began to notice all the signs that Peter was falling out of love.
When you kissed, the spark was gone, and the little notes became one-sided. When you went to the library, you went alone. Homework dates were frequently cancelled, so you buried your head in your studies. And passing Central Park made you brush away tears of pain and loneliness.
Where had it all gone wrong?
The more you tried to fix it, the more it seemed to push Peter away. He claimed it was just the Stark Internship but you knew better.
Something was very wrong.
"Maybe he is just busy with the internship." Betty assured you, as the two of you walked down Midtown High School's main hallway after Lunch. You bit your lip, nodding to yourself.
"Yeah, maybe. But I feel like he's trying to avoid me, we've barely spent five minutes together in the past three weeks." You replied, keeping your eyes on the floor. Betty sighed, hating to see you so upset.
"Talk to him, tell him how you feel. I doubt Peter would ever hurt you on purpose." She said, giving you a quick hug before heading to her class. You closed your eyes and tried to steady your breathing.
"Just talk to him, Y/N. How hard can it be?" You whispered to yourself during English class, tapping your pencil on your desk. You hadn't seen Peter all day, but you figured you could corner him by his locker.
When the bell finally rang for the day, you all but sprinted out of the room. You knew Peter left school fifteen minutes after the bell, which you figured gave you enough time to talk to him.
It didn't take you very long to find him.
Peter was standing by his locker, laughing at something Ned was telling him. MJ stood nearby, smiling at the two of them, but frowning when she caught your eye.
She lightly tapped Peter's shoulder, and whispered something to him you couldn't catch. Peter stiffened and turned to look at you, clearly uneasy. Your heart felt like it would beat out of your chest.
With a deep breath, you sauntered over to the group. MJ looked at her shoes, avoiding your eye. Ned just smiled awkwardly, giving you a slight nod.
Peter looked annoyed by your presence.
"Uh, hey guys!" You said, gripping the straps of your backpack. Ned and MJ said hello, but Peter just pursed his lips in response.
"Pete, could I talk to you? In private?" You asked, watching Peter's face tighten. Ned and MJ exchanged looks and walked away, leaving you and Peter standing alone.
"What is it?" Peter sighed, continuing to put his books away. You noticed the lack of enthusiasm in his voice, but you tried to remain positive.
"I just wanted to see if we could hang out tonight, just the two of us? I know you're busy and all but I haven't seen you in so long and I miss you." You began, keeping a hopeful smile on your face. Peter just stared into his locker.
"I can't, got the Stark internship tonight. Sorry." He replied steely, slinging his backpack over his shoulder. You felt tears prick your eyes, but you were determined not to let Peter see you break down.
"Oh, right. Okay, have fun then, I'll just-" You stuttered, your voice shaking as Peter turned and left you standing all alone.
He hadn't even bothered to say goodbye.
You suddenly felt everyone's eyes on you, and you quickly ran out the back doors to hide. You threw your bag and slid down the brick wall, finally letting the tears fall freely.
Within moments you were sobbing into your hands, wondering if this was how it felt to have a piece of your heart cut out.
After ten minutes and Mrs. Galloway asking if you were alright, you stumbled emotionlessly to the subway. You called your mom, who said she would be home late, and asked if you could order takeout.
When you got home, you went straight to the fridge and rootled around until you found a pint of chocolate chip ice cream. You fished through your silverware drawer for a spoon, and collapsed on the couch eating it sadly.
There didn't seem to be much to watch, but you settled on Me Before You, knowing it would completely break you.
Needless to say, it did.
Thirty minutes in you began to bawl, sobs wracking your already weak body. You picked up the empty pint and threw it at the TV, and then you just sat there silently.
Maybe food would help.
Somehow, you picked up the phone and called the pizza place. Feeling accomplished, you dragged yourself to your room ready to bury yourself in homework when you saw Peter walking down the sidewalk.
He must have finished his internship early!
You watched him cross the road and head into his apartment building, and a thought crossed your mind.
Why don't you surprise your boyfriend?
With a renewed sense of vigor, you washed your face and changed your clothes. Standing in front of the mirror, you decided you looked like a dream. Common sense abandoned, you grabbed your purse and headed to Peter's.
The walk was fairly short, since your apartments were across the road from each other. You climbed the familiar steps to the third floor, and stood in front of the door nervously.
What if he didn't want to see you? What if he wanted to break up?
You were about to knock on the door, when you heard Aunt May from behind it.
"Peter you can't keep putting this off! It isn't right, I didn't raise you to act like this!" She cried, and you stepped back in confusion.
Putting off what? What was she talking about?
An old woman passed by with her dog, eyeing you strangely. You realized it probably looked a little weird that you were standing outside the door without knocking, so you did just that. The lock jiggled slightly and you were met by Aunt May.
"Y/N? Honey, what are you doing here?" She asked, her voice laced with worry and nervousness. You quirked an eyebrow, not sure how to respond.
"Hi Aunt May, I'm here to see Peter. I saw him come home a couple of minutes ago, I just wanted to say hi." You said, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear skittishly. Her face fell, and an emotion crossed her face that you couldn't read.
"Sweetheart, I don't think you should-" she started, but you were determined.
"Please, I promise it'll only take a minute!" You pleaded, slipping past her and making your way to Peter's door.
"Y/N, don't!" She yelled, but your hand was already on the door knob.
"Hey, Pete I-" your words stuck in your throat as you saw Peter and MJ sitting on his bed, making out. Her fingers were threaded through his hair and he had an arm on her waist. It wasn't new either, they looked like they had done it before.
You felt like throwing up.
"Oh my god!" You cried, turning away and covering your mouth to stop from being sick. Peter and MJ broke away, their faces red. Aunt May came in and held you close, letting you cry into her shoulder.
"Y-Y/N what are you doing here?!" He yelped, pushing MJ off him. MJ stood up, not sure what to do. You tried to speak but nothing came out.
You couldn't breathe, you were hyperventilating.
"Peter get her a bag!" Aunt May yelled, helping you to sit and put your head between your legs. The tears kept falling as you gasped for air.
"Honey you gotta breathe okay? Come on, you can do it!" The bag was given to you and you tried again. This time the air came to your lungs.
"Thanks." You whispered, Aunt May squeezing your hand. Peter and MJ stood in the doorway, watching you there. It was too much, all of them.
You needed to leave.
Slowly, you stood up and stormed out. You didn't look back until Peter grabbed your hand.
"Let. Me. Go." You hissed, ripping your hand from his grasp. Peter's eyes were red, and it made you livid.
"Y/N, please I love you! It wasn't meant to go this far. I swear!" He cried, and you couldn't help but spin around.
"You love me?! So that's why you were cheating on me?! Go to hell, Peter!" You yelled, closing your eyes as the tears burned your cheeks. MJ was crying too, but you didn't know why. She got what she wanted.
"Don't leave me, I can't lose you." He sobbed, but you couldn't find it in you to care anymore.
You'd been the only one caring for three weeks, enough was enough.
"You lost me the minute you decided I wasn't enough. We're done, Peter. It's over. He's all yours, MJ." You sobbed, taking one last look at Peter burying his face in his hands. Aunt May looked heartbroken, furious that Peter had broken the one girl that had supported him through everything.
"Sorry Aunt May, I'll see myself out." You whispered, shutting the door behind you. For a moment, you stood there not sure what to do. Then you collapsed and sat by the wall crying.
You and Peter were over. The relationship you cherished more than anything had fallen apart right in front of your eyes.
And the worst part was that he would have kept cheating if you hadn't found out. You weren't enough for him, so he found someone else who was.
You could just hear Aunt May's voice from behind the door, interrupting your sobs.
"How could you do that to her?! She loved you, Peter! She loved you when there was no one else, and you broke her heart!" She yelled, and you couldn't help but bring your knees to your chest.
Time to leave.
You got up and walked out of the building, in some sort of daze. You almost didn't hear your name being called.
"Y/N! Y/N wait!" You clenched your jaw, not ready to see Peter. But when you turned it wasn't him, but Aunt May.
"Aunt May? What is it?" You asked, still brushing away tears. She came to stand in front of you, and brought you in for a hug.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry." She whispered, and you broke apart. The tears fell all over again, and you both stood on the New York sidewalk holding each other. Aunt May stroked your hair gently as you cried into her sweater.
"I loved him, I thought he loved me. Why wasn't I good enough?" You whimpered, and it broke Aunt May's heart that Peter had done this to you.
"You are enough, sweetie. You are more than enough, I promise you." She said, letting you compose yourself again. You smiled sadly, shaking your head.
"No, I wasn't. If I was, he wouldn't have left me for her." You sniffed, waving goodbye to her. Aunt May just sighed, and went back into the building, ready to scream at Peter for losing you.
That night, you stayed in your room and ate pizza. When you could actually sit up, you watched a little bit of Friends until you felt your eyes droop. You shut your laptop and turned off all the lights. Lying on your pillow, you stared up at the ceiling and wondered if you would ever love again.
When you drifted off, the only name on your mind was Peter Parker, the boy who broke your heart.
"When I drift off, I will dream about you. It's always you." You choked, letting sleep devour you whole.
