Pepper and Tony smiled at each other over the flickering candles, ignoring the fact that Happy stood nearby, pretending to go on his phone.
They sat upon a hill, overlooking the city that was a beacon of light in the darkening sky, apart from the small line of orange and pink peaking over the horizon. The picnic mat on the ground was soft and held plates of an assortment of foods, such as soft bread with a hard crust and pillowy, bready insides, with a neat white butter dish beside it with soft, creamy yellow butter. There was cheeses of many types, like Brie or cheddar or Camembert. Water crackers spilled out of the box and onto the plate, and the fruit were chopped into pretty shapes like stars or hearts or hexagons. Small, bite sized cupcakes with sweet icing and a soft, bouncy vanilla texture.
Among all the foods, candles flickered to give them light upon a French candle holder with metallic swirls and a small bird only noticeable if you examined it for longer than a glance. A bottle of champagne stood tall beside it, seal broken and the cork laying carelessly by the base.
Tony and Pepper clinked their fall glasses, the pale bubbling liquid sloshing around slightly, and took a sip, hands entwining within each other.
They didn't get date nights often, not with all the work Pepper needed to do or the amount of time Tony spent working on his Ironman suits, not to mention the time they spent with Peter or doing things for Peter or his school or his friends. They were determined to be good parents to him, which meant sacrificing time they could be spending together- not that they minded. Any time spent with Peter was worth it.
Meanwhile, at the tower, everything was going to utter sh*t.
"What the hell Thor?!"
Bucky had walked in on something he certainly didn't want to see.
Peter, sitting on the floor, eating from a tub of ice cream with the largest spoon he had seen in his entire life- like a children's shovel to play in the sand with.
Thor sat on the couch nearby, reading from an Asgardians children's book aloud.
"-the children happily skipped in circles and sang merrily for they had made their first kill- the enemy was dead and it's heart was ripped out, laying in a pool of blood beside the body-"
"THOR."
Thor glanced up from the book nonchalantly, eyebrows up slightly, as though asking through a facial expression what was up. Peter turned away as well, sticky ice cream all over his face.
"I go to drop a log for what, two minutes? And when I come back, you've given Peter ice cream right before bed time, and you're reading him a gruesome story." Bucky scolded, folding his arms and giving Thor a look.
"I apologise Barnes. Peter, would you please put the ice cream away?"
Peter immediately started eating faster, shoveling ice cream into his mouth at an alarming rate, trying to eat more ice cream before it was taken off him.
"Peter!" Bucky said, and Thor began laughing.

"-And then I socked him in the jaw, right there, and that's how I got kicked out of the shopping centre." Steve was saying, talking to Wanda as they headed up. They both stopped in the doorway, looking at the commotion as Thor held Peter up in the air while Bucky tried to tug the tub from his hands (which had stuck themselves to the tub).
"What's going on in here?" He said loudly, in his big boy voice.
Thor, Bucky and Peter all turned around with wide eyes, like a deer caught in headlights or a child caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Bucky flung backwards as Peter let go of the tub, curling into Thor, who was still holding him up in a similar way to Simba was in the lion king.
Steve and Wanda looked around the mess of the room, and Steve sighed loudly.
"Thor, put Peter down."
Thor obliged, and Peter immediately tried to bolt, but Steve caught him by the back of his hoodie and pulled him backwards, pulling a handkerchief from his back pocket. He licked at and began wiping at Peter's ice cream covered face, preventing Peter from squirming away by keeping a firm hand on his shoulder.
Peter glared at Wanda when she snorted.
"It's time for bed. Buck, put the ice cream away. Peter, go brush your teeth and get into your pyjamas. Thor, clean up this mess."
Everyone grumbled under their breaths as they did what they were told, and Steve and Wanda sat down on the couch, continuing their conversation from earlier.
Peter, meanwhile, had a lot of energy. He knew he wasn't going to be able to sleep- so why not spend it as Spider-Man instead?
So instead of changing into his brand new hulk pyjamas, Peter changed into his Spider-Man suit and eased open the window, jumping out and enjoying the feeling of the wind blowing against him, and the lurch of his heart as he chucked a web and swung through the city, waving at a little girl who waved at him, before smacking into a building yet again.
Meanwhile, at the tower, Steve was about to say goodnight to Peter.
The door was slightly open, so he pushed it further open only to find the window open and the bed didn't have a pillow, for it was stuffed beneath the blankets with a mop sticking out of the top for hair.
Steve stared at it for several seconds, taking deep breaths. "Friday, exactly how stupid does Peter think we are?" He asked, clenching his fists.
"Why?" Clint asked, scaring the cheese out of Steve as he appeared beside him with no warning.
"Jesus Christ-" Steve muttered, hand going to his heart.
Clint followed Steve's eyeline to see the mop and pillows, and there was no sign of understanding on his face.
"He fell asleep quickly." He commented.
"No wonder he managed to sneak out so easily when you're babysitting... are you blind and deaf?"
"No? Look we're gonna wake the kid up let's talk somewhere el-"
"Peter has left. That is a pillow and a mop." Friday interupted.
Clint looked at the pillow for a few more seconds. "Huh," He said. "Never would have guessed that."
Steve felt like strangling Clint, though perhaps that was because he was highly stressed because if Tony found out Civil War would happen all over again.
"We need to go find him. If Tony finds out..." Steve sighed and led the way back to the lounge, where he found Wanda yelling so much her voice was going hoarse, all while lying on a blanket while Sam, Thor, and Bucky held the edges of it, swinging it. Bruce was trying to talk Sam into putting her down beside them, and Natasha was lying on the couch upside down, her red hair almost brushing the floor as she held her phone up, filming the whole thing.
"Guys! Peter's missing!" Steve yelled over the commotion.
The entire room went completely silent, except for Wanda's soft 'oof' as she was dropped to the floor.
"Again?" Bruce exclaimed.
Steve sighed. "We're gonna have to try to ignore the puppy dog eyes, and ground him this time."
Everyone nodded seriously, standing up. Natasha pocketed her phone, everyone suddenly on serious mode.
"We'll use social media to find where Spider-Man was last spotted, and go from there. Any questions?"
Natasha's hand went up.
"Yes, Nat?"
"That plan sucks."
"That's not a question."
"Why don't we just use the track-"
"Alright, time to go. To the elevator!"
"But what about the tra-"
"Hurry up!"
Natasha rolled her eyes and followed everyone into the elevator, where they stood awkwardly, listening to the quiet elevator music and tapping their feet impatiently.
It stopped at one point, and they almost all piled out but Friday announced it was only floor 67, where a young intern entered, earphones in and eyes glued to her phone as she texted someone.
She didn't appear to notice them, fingers flying across the keyboard as she texted the person labeled 'Jack' who appeared to be talking about how he was food poisoned by a maccas burger and was now currently emptying his stomach on the top of someone's fancy car. Her music was heard through her earphones in the silent elevator, which appeared to be heavy metal music.
It was a strange music choice for such an innocent looking girl- she wore simple blue jeans and a floral top, paired with a butterfly necklace and small pearl earrings. On her feet were old, scrappy sneakers and her hair was in soft brown waves, tucked away in a low, loose, ponytail at the nape of her neck.
Eventually the elevator came to the bottom, and they all piled out, the girl still not sparing a look at them except for a small glance- and even then she didn't seem shocked to see so many Avengers.
As planned, they found Spider-Man to be spotted near queens, and set off as fast as possible, hoping to find him. Bruce has volunteered to stay behind just in case he came home by himself, but they all knew it was really to just get some peace and quiet for once in his life.
Spider-Man, as predicted by Natasha, was nowhere to be found- he could swing very fast, and by the time they got to the spot, he was gone again. She decided to try again with her suggestion.
"Why don't we just track him? There's a tracker in his suit." Natasha drawled, eyes following Steve as he paced with stress. He stopped dead and spun around to face her.
"Why didn't you tell me earlier?!" He asked.
Natasha rolled her eyes. "I tried but you didn't bother to listen."
Steve looked guilty. "Sorry, I thought you were going to insult me again."
"So we're gonna track him?" Bucky asked, for everyone had been watching Steve pace at this point.
Natasha pulled out her phone, tapped a few buttons, and soon had Peter's location up in only a couple of seconds.
"He's been doing a lap of the city and has stopped to save people- twice." She said. "He's currently on the other side of the city."
"Are you kidding me?!" Clint shrieked. "This kid is going to be the death of me, I'm sure of it!"
Sam sighed. "Let's go." Natasha got into the driving seat, and everyone else crammed themselves into the back, except for Steve in the passenger seat. They'd have quite the story to tell if the police pulled them over.
Natasha sped through the city at an alarming speed, scaring the cheese out of everyone except Clint who told her to step on it. They both gained and lost pursuit of the police, and eventually, arrived to where Peter currently was- fighting a mugger.
They parked the car and clambered out. Spider-Man quickly noticed them after the mugger was knocked out by a spinning shield.
His eyes widened comically. "Oh sh*t." He said, running away and webbing himself towards a hill nearby. They were quite a bit out of the city now.
Meanwhile, Tony and Pepper were having a very romantic time, soft music playing as they clumsily danced, almost ready to wrap it up and go watch a movie.
Tony's phone buzzed loudly, ruining the mood. His hand immediately shot to grab it, but Pepper took his hand in hers.
"Don't." She said. "I'm sure if it's really an emergency, they'll text the emergency phone, which isn't on vibrate."
Tony nodded, and they went back to their romantics, when suddenly, they heard lots of loud voices and the sound of running footsteps.
Pepper and Tony looked up just in time to see Spider-Man webbing past, glancing over his shoulder in a panicked frenzy and not noticing Pepper and Tony as he shot a web at a nearby tree.
"PETER BENJAMIN PARKER." Pepper scolded loudly, and Tony was glad he had triple checked the area had no video cameras or audio devices or anyone within a hundred metre radius.
Spider-Man jumped and fell to the grass with a loud thump. His eyes widened even more when he saw Pepper and Tony standing up and folding their arms, and the rest of the avengers panting as they ran up the hill.
The froze when they spotted the pair up the top.
"What is going on here?" Tony asked.
"Thor gave Peter ice cream before bed and he ran off to be Spider-Man and we went after him and now he's running away." Vision explained.
Tony sighed loudly.
"Happy, escort Peter back to our car, Pepper and I were just finishing up anyway. We'll drop him off then go to watch our movie after."
Happy was happy to oblige, throwing Peter over his shoulder and taking him back to the car while Pepper and Tony packed up their picnic, telling the Avengers to head back to base and that they were all absolute idiots.
Peter was just about asleep by the time they got to the car, and after a bit of hugs and soft music, paired with running fingers through his hair (a weakness he would never admit) he was fast asleep.
The car ride was quiet, as opposed to the very loud car ride the others were having, everyone blaming each other for what happened while Steve and Vision tried to break it up.
When they arrived back at the tower, Peter was laying on the couch with a soft red ironman blanket, and Pepper and Tony were putting away their picnic things.
Noticing them, the pair left for their movie (though not after several threats- nobody would step a toe out of line if there was the threat of no tv for a month).
Peter, half asleep, mumbled something they only just caught.
"How'd you know?"
"Friday." Clint replied, grinning.
"...snitch." Peter mumbled.
