I Was Hoping We Could, Like, Not Shoot Me

This was requested by @restlessrainbows - hope you enjoy! I had some artistic license maybe a bit and pulled an identity reveal scene, so you get to see Spideychelle, Peter interacting with Tony, Avengers not knowing him, etc. I didn't really know how to work the teacher into the story though, I'm sorry :|

Things were already looking sketchy when they pulled onto the highway. Peter had simply chucked the field trip form at Aunt May, not bothering to read up on where they were going. Probably somewhere lame, as always. He was regretting that now, because they weren't going in the direction of all the museums. In fact, it was pretty similar to the route Peter took with Happy when going to Stark Towers... holy fuck.

"Ned. Ned!" Peter turned to Ned in fevered anxiety. "Where are we going?" Ned looked at him, confused. "Don't you know?" He asked. "Just tell me!" Peter begged. "Stark... Towers?" Peter's best friend said, confused.

"Oh fuck."

MJ was smirking at Peter when he looked over his shoulder, considering her, Flash, and Ned were the only ones who knew about his secret - the truth about his "internship" - but the rest of the school did not.

The bus screeched into the parking lot, where Peter stared in horror at the large tower rising up in front of him. "Oh god. Oh god." MJ snickered. "You are SO SCREWED." Peter mock-glared at her. "Mr. Stark knows you, Flash, and Ned, too!" "Yeah, but he called Ned 'Ted' last time, and Flash 'Dash'. I guess my name was hard to screw up because it was 2 letters." Peter personally thought it was more that Tony suspected he was secretly dating MJ. It wasn't exactly a secret, actually, a couple people at school knew. Peter just didn't tell Tony.

As soon as they went into the lobby, the teacher called for everyone to get in a line. That was when Peter caught a glimpse of a woman with red hair, dressed in a black combat suit, many guns holstered around her belt. And... oh fuck no! It was the Black Widow. He had seen her literally once, at the battle of the airport. She had confronted him, asking what Peter was doing on the battlefield, what he could do, if he was going to be an Avenger, and so on. Peter answered said questions, trying to keep his voice from trembling and disguise the fact that he was literally 15. Badges were handed out by a tour guide he knew named Robert. The man simply winked at Peter and moved along to MJ and Ned. Flash grinned at him, and pointed over his shoulder to where many of Peter's classmates were gawking at the boy who got skipped. With shaking hands, he pulled out his clearance badge - Alpha 10. Natasha Romanoff was still standing in the room, looking at the line of students. Possibly searching for threats. Peter's Spidey Sense was slightly tingling in the back of his mind - his secret could easily be revealed if she recognized his voice or realized he had high clearance, or really if he did anything noticeable at all and Natasha decided she cared.

As they passed through the scanners - "... Omega 1. Thompson, Eugene "Flash". Omega 1. Parker, Peter. Alpha 10. Welcome back, Peter! Jones, Michelle "MJ". Omega 1." Peter tried to unobtrusively walk through the scanners, but Natasha's interest had been piqued. He only hoped she didn't see his face. Nope, she had. Natasha was staring right at him. Peter looked at her out of the corner of his eye, and they made eye contact for a split second. His Spidey Senses grew from a tingle to a roar, and Peter hastily faded back into the crowd, settling next to MJ, Ned, and Flash, breathing hard as if he had just run a marathon. "Dude, what was that? Are you ok?" Flash asked. "Th-they don't know about me. Who I am," Peter gasped out. "Who you are? You mean his intern?" Flash said quickly, fabricating a lie to keep the eyes off of Peter. "Yeah - his intern. Um. Anyways she was staring at me really suspiciously and now I'm going to be murdered. His Spidey Senses were dying down now that he was out of sight, but there was a slight prickle still remaining. A warning that one false step could ruin his life.

Robert led the tour group to the elevators, announcing their first location was a training room. "Most likely empty," he said. Peter's Spidey Senses said otherwise. The doors slid open, where there were people in there. Hawkeye, War Machine, Falcon, the Scarlet Witch, and... oh god. Captain America, with his shield in hand. "Hello, students!" The man announced, standing in beyond a layer of bulletproof glass. Peter knew it was bulletproof - he had seen Natasha shooting in here when she was training for the airport battle. Peter knew he looked nervous - probably out of place in a room where everyone was excited and awed. This thought was confirmed when Steve's gaze fell on him for a moment, looking concerned. Oh hell no. "Um - okay. Anyways. We're here to teach you how to fight!" Peter had a heart attack. There was no way he was going to do this. No. Fucking. Way.

There were lessons taught and Peter actually learned something. It was a surprising experience, and Peter decided he appreciated it. Until Steve's next words.

"We'll have a little sparring match. Whoever lasts the longest against me wins..." He turned to Hawkeye. "Clint what do they win?" Steve whispered. "A selfie? And an autograph?" Clint suggested. "A selfie and an autograph!" Captain America repeated. MJ actually looked intrigued. "Ooh, if I win I could get an autograph and a picture with the Scarlet Witch? That would be great for my feminism blog..." Peter was now torn. He could win MJ a selfie. That would be the easy part. The hard part of that was also not revealing his identity. It was easy enough to not shoot webs, it hurt to do that without his shooters. If he stuck to a wall, however... that would be an accident. He rummaged through his pockets and came out with some suction cups. That would work. Definitely. And if Peter didn't get called, he didn't have to go up anyways! It was a win-win. If he didn't get called, he was safe. If he was called, he could win MJ a prize.

One by one, kids were called up. One by one, they were beaten in seconds. One by one, they tapped out. Peter kept slipping behind other people, hoping not to get noticed. Everyone had gone except Peter.

And Steve's eyes fell straight on him, likely recognizing him as the nervous kid from earlier. Steve looked at him, and his eyes fell to Peter's badge. Peter could tell as Steve read 'Alpha 10', because his eyes widened incrementally. But then he opened his mouth and said "Peter? Come on up."

Clint did the countdown. "3! 2! 1! No!" Cue heart attack number 2. Then Steve turned and glared at Hawkeye. "Do it for real this time." "Aww. But-" "Seriously." "3! 2! 1! Go!" Steve looked at Peter, measuring him up. Peter launched the first punch, deliberately missing and putting almost no force behind it. Steve didn't look surprised, obviously he'd figured Peter wasn't any stronger than the rest of them. When Steve's first punch came, Peter was prepared. It was fast, but aimed for his shoulder and his Spidey Senses let him dodge that, and another hit that was aimed for the side where Steve was obviously trying to trick him. The man's eyes narrowed, and Peter figured he was re-evaluating his earlier assumptions. Peter dodged a ton of punches, occasionally throwing weaker hits at shoulders, elbows, sides. Peter, growing tired, launched a kick at Steve's knee. Captain America fell back, stumbling, and the boy realized he might have had a bit more force than necessary. Steve recovered quickly, looking at Peter with newfound curiosity. Peter knew he was fucked. So, when the man came at him with a rather obvious strike, Peter let it hit his shoulder and he was somewhat surprised by the force of it. Peter hit the matted wall, instinctively grabbing it when he realized he was a good couple inches off of the ground. He relaxed his fingers, falling down fast. Judging by how long he was up there (less than a second), it probably just looked like Peter had hit the wall but caught himself quickly. Even so, Peter glanced over his shoulder, but his Spidey Senses were only prickling slightly.

Steve watched as Peter quickly tapped out, then turned to War Machine and Scarlet Witch, raising an eyebrow. Then he looked back at Peter. "You've got heart, kid. Where are you from?" Peter froze, remembering the words Steve had said to him right before dropping an airport terminal-thing on him. There was no lying right now, not in front of his classmates. "Queens," Peter said quietly, feeling his teacher's gaze on him. Steve frowned, then looked Peter up and down. "S-sir?" Peter stammered quickly. "Just - remembering another time. Another kid wearing red. Want your prize now? You lasted 4 minutes and 31 seconds. That's 4 minutes and 12 seconds faster than the previous best." Peter looked up. "Uh, I was going to let my friend take a picture and the autograph. For her blog. Um, yeah. MJ? You know her? The one who went against you but didn't care and just flipped you off and stepped out?" Steve chuckled, his suspicions buried likely under the impression that Peter took martial arts or something. As Peter darted back into the audience, MJ hugged him, hard, then went up to the stage after Steve called her up.

It all changed when they went to Tony's speech. The Avengers from the battle training were following them, and Peter could feel their eyes on him. When someone tapped him on the shoulder, Peter almost punched them because his Spidey Senses were on alert and told him someone was there. When Peter turned, it was Clint.

"How'd you do that?" He asked. "What?" Peter queried nervously. "You know. Last that long against the grandpa. You beat the best non-Avenger fighting time by more than 2 minutes. And almost beat a record this kid set who may or may not be an Avenger. Tony can be confusing. Anyways, this spider-kid dude Tony found in Queens faced the grandpa for 5 minutes and 6 seconds. The fight only ended when Steve dropped an airport terminal on him. But the spider-kid almost beat him! And who knows what would have happened if the terminal wasn't dropped. Anyways, the spider-kid was from Queens, so that's why I thought of him when you said you were from the same place. Anyways, you were so cool. How did you dodge the Capsicle?" Clint asked.

Peter was getting really uncomfortable. "Um. Well, I noticed that he always favors his right hand, and often tries to trick other people. Because I went last, I saw that. And... yeah. As long as you watch his hands, you're pretty well off. Oh, and aim for the legs." Peter regretted those words as soon as they came out. "Huh. That's what Tony always says. Speaking of, I'll introduce you to him. Personally." Peter looked at him awkwardly. "Uh - well, u-um," He stammered. "No worries! Tony's pretty cool." Doors slid open, and the class filed in. "Welcome! Today you will be hearing me talk! Along with the other Avengers!" Tony's voice boomed out of the intercom. The doors they had passed through closing behind them, and they moved into an auditorium. "Oh shit - I mean, shoot. I'm supposed to be up there. Meet me by the water fountain over there-" Clint pointed, "And we'll tell Tony afterward about you posing a threat to the Capsicle." Peter nodded, dazed, as Clint ran off toward the stage. Peter caught up with Ned, Flash, and MJ. "Clint's introducing me to Tony." Peter groaned. "What? Why is that ba- oh," Ned trailed off, catching on. "Yeah, good luck, man."

Tony's speech was pretty boring. A lot about how much of an honor it was to be protecting the rest of the world, how he was proud of himself and his teammates, collaboration is good, and so on. The rest of the Avengers said similar things, and yet Peter could feel their eyes on him, intrigued and worried, as Peter went over to the water fountain when the speech ended. Clint ran out soon, excited. "Ready to meet Tony?" He asked. "You see... I kind of already met him...?" Peter said quickly. "Oh. Well you can formally meet him now!" Clint exclaimed.

Peter opened his mouth to protest, but closed it as Tony walked out. "Alright Clint so where's this kid you wanted me to meet?" He asked, looking over his shoulder to make sure no one was following. "This is Peter!" Clint said proudly. "Wait, Peter? What-" Tony broke off as his eyes fell on Peter. "Oh, hey kid. What are you doing here... wait what did you do to catch Katniss' attention?" Those words were accompanied with a warning. Did you do something to reveal your identity?  Peter shook his head slightly. "He lasted 4 minutes and 31 seconds against Capsicle!" Clint answered for him. Tony stared at Peter, silently conveying "You idiot".  "So wait, how well do you know Peter? He said you'd met... and Natasha said he had an Alpha 10 badge..."

Tony grinned. "This is my... personal intern!" He announced. "Peter has had combat training, and he helps me on my projects! Yeah, that's it." Clint narrowed his eyes. He was fun but he wasn't stupid. Tony's story didn't fit - internship levels are up to Beta 10, not Alpha. Alpha level was limited to Avengers only (and Pepper). Not to mention interns didn't receive combat training. "Ok so he's a little bit special..." Tony said quickly. "I met him a while ago when I was looking for people to intern for me, and he's super smart and fun to hang around with. Plus, he kind of reminds me of... well, me. So I maybe got attached a bit. He's awesome." It wasn't a lie. He did meet Peter a while ago, the facade was the internship, and Tony did hang out with him a lot. Clint relaxed. "Okay. Well, see you around then, Peter. Tony, see you later. Don't hog the kid. I can't believe you kept him a secret from us."

Tony side-hugged Peter quickly, then returned to the stage for the next part - the Q&A. Tony had just opened his mouth when Peter's Spidey Senses went off like crazy. "Mr. Stark!" He yelled. Tony turned to him when there was a huge bang, and bright light filled the room. Then fire was everywhere, orange and red flames licking up the walls. Smoke bellowing everywhere. People were screaming, and a shadow jumped into the room, then grabbed a kid. In a low voice, they said, "30 minutes. Find me, 'heroes'." Then, they leaped out of the wreckage of the wall, dragging the kid with them, giving Peter a view of MJ's panicked face. A jetpack fired, and they soared away, MJ kicking and punching at him.

Tony grabbed Peter's wrist and told him to stay back. He should know that wasn't happening. Peter ran and, looking over his shoulder, no one was watching, jumped out of the gaping hole left by the explosion. Peter pressed a button on his watch, and almost instantly, his suit formed around him. Shooting a web, he swung across some buildings and spotted the smoke left behind by the man's jetpack. Suddenly, noise blasted over the comms. "Pe- kid! Spidey! What the hell do you think you're doing?" Tony yelled. Peter ignored this, deciding replying if others were on comms would be a terrible idea. As he swung through a window and landed silently on the ground, a new voice came. "Hey, kid, we're coming. Don't get yourself killed before we get there." Steve. Peter froze. He didn't... know Peter's real identity, right? "I haven't told them," Tony said, as though reading his mind. He relaxed. Repulsors sounded, and Peter could tell Tony was getting ready. The boy could hear the man talking to himself downstairs. Peter found a set of stairs and climbed down, then across the ceiling above MJ. MJ was tied to a chair, unconscious. Peter was pissed now. In a series of quick movements, he webbed the man's hands to the desk, flipped onto the ground, and activated taser webs.

The man turned, dragging the whole desk with him, easily. There was at least a few hundred pounds of equipment on that table. "Ah, the Spider-Man." The figure drawled. "I didn't see you there among the big-shot superheroes. Of course, I didn't expect you not to come. Friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, huh? Well, tell your Stark that however much he plays the hero, he is still a liar, and a murderer." The man flung the desk at him, Peter's Spidey Senses barely saving him from a head-on collision. He fell onto the ground knocked back by surprise and impact of the desk glancing off of his shoulder. There was a loud whirring sound, and Peter glanced up. A whirling sphere of energy was charging at the end of the man's gun. Peter scrambled back, but the energy discharged and slammed into him. Then there was the pain. The searing, crackling pain of electricity zipping across his skin. Peter groaned, but he could feel his advanced healing already start to take the pain out of the burns.

"Kid!" There was lots of yelling on the comms, only adding to the confusion. MJ... Peter pushed himself up, shooting a web at the man and pinning him to the wall, then grabbed MJ from where she was tied, and swung her out to the safety of the street. Peter then returned into the building, where he found the man already free of the webs. Shocked, Peter shot a web at him again, only to realize that it was... an illusion? Peter spun, then looked up. A very triumphant-looking mystery man smirked down at him, pressing a button. There was a beeping sound, then they let the remote fall. It had barely hit the ground when there was an enormous explosion.Peter's head cracked against the wall, and then he fell to the ground.

He woke to people yelling. "KID!" "Spidey, are you ok?" "Spider-Man. Please tell me you're ok." Pain was tearing through his body.

Peter shot a web out of a window, landing, crouched, on the street. Comms crackling. "Kid, we're almost there." A shadow flung itself across the rooftop. It was him. Rage revitalized Peter, and he swung up to the rooftop where the shadowy man was running. "Hey!" Peter yelled, shooting a web at his foot, tripping him up. The man turned. "I thought I had finished you, insect." Peter rolled his eyes. "Arachnid!" He corrected. The man reached for a satchel hanging from his side, pulling out the gun from earlier. "Oh hello there I was hoping we could like, not shoot me?" "Oh, don't worry, I won't... yet. But when I'm through with you, you'll have nothing left." Peter smirked. "Except the dignity of knowing I never carried a man purse."

"Kid, wait!" Tony again. "I have a plan." Peter lied. "Which is?" Peter paused.

"Winning."

The gun was charging again, Peter could practically see the trajectory now. "Karen, mute comms." He ran in, sliding to the right as it blasted, then punched it out of the man's hand. The man ripped his foot out of Peter's webbing, and punched directly at his face. Peter reached out and caught it. "Wow, the Winter Soldier was harder to stop than you!" Peter punched him back, in the stomach. "Nice try." "Karen, switch to Holding Webs." Instantly, webs made of carbon nanotubes (he had been improving the design) shot out and bound his hands together. Peter turned to check that MJ was safe - she was on the ground, waving at him. Then her face changed, and she was screaming something, and then a gun was charging, and Peter could count the shots as they discharged. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Blasting into his spine. Peter spun with the impact, seeing another one of the man - a clone? - grinning at him, lips peeled back into a cruel smile. Then the sky crackled with lightning and Peter saw Tony's suit land on the rooftop, and then it went black.

"Peter. Peter!" Tony's voice again. Peter tried to drag himself out of the darkness, but he was too tired, and he let sleep claim him once more.

"Hey Spidey." An unfamiliar voice. "You know, I thought when I'd see you again, I'd tell you all about my metal arm, because you thought it was cool. Then I'd probably beat the shit out of you for throwing that sign at me. But Tony's not doing well. Like, at all. You're a strong kid, yeah? Well, we all need you to wake up."

"Peter, right?" A woman. "You were really brave today. When I saw you this morning, I wrote you off as someone dangerous, who somehow got an Alpha 10 pass. But you're different. And, Peter, the battle's over. You can come back now."

"Peter." MJ's voice, close to tears. "Everyone's saying to wake up because the battle's over. Because you need to. But I'm asking you to wake up for me. Because I don't know how to deal if you're not here. When I think about the future, you're there. And, Peter, please. I love you."

Wake up, people were saying. Wake up. He had to wake up.

It was too goddamn bright. Why couldn't it have been nighttime?

Tony was sitting in a chair by his bed. "Hey Mr. Stark," Peter said. Tony turned to him, exclaiming his name. "Peter?!" Peter half-waved. "PETER." Oh fuck. "Y-yeah?" "Next time you jump out a window to save your goddamn girlfriend, try not to get yourself murdered!" "Sorry!" "So you admit it?" "Admit what?" "That she's your girlfriend." "No, she's not! We're just friends!" "Mhmm... I see. Friends with benefits?" "NOOOO!"
