I want my aunt back, I want my mom back!
TW: sadness
In this story, I used the old aunt May.
Peter Parker, age 20. And he has too many responsibilities for a twenty-year-old. A full-time job at a local shop, full-time college student, full-time caretaker for aunt May and of course his nighty activity as Spider-Man. How he survives, he doesn't know himself.
At age 70, aunt May was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, Peter was 16 at the time. In the past 4 years, Peter noticed how much the disease attacked May's memory. That was the most noticeable symptom. But they still survive together.
Peter would work every day from 8-4, take college classes from 7-11 at night, would go out as Spider-Man from 11-3 at night and the rest of the time he would take care of May, and sleep of course. But lately, it's getting harder for him to take care of May, his exhaustion is also not helping. May is forgetting more and more of the basic stuff, and more holes in her memory appear. One morning she shocked Peter about it.
"Honey?" May asked.
"Yes, May?" Peter answered as he made dinner.
"Who is this with me in the picture?" She pointed to a picture of her and Ben in front of their first home. Peter swallowed thickly before answering, blinking away the tears.
"That's your husband Ben."
"I have a husband?"
"Yes May, you had a husband. Married in August 1954."
"Oh, did we have children?"
"No you didn't, but you took care of me since I was 6."
"Oh, okay." There was a small pause before May continued. "Why are you crying dear?"
"Oh?" Peter didn't realise some tears had escaped. "It's nothing. Dinner is ready."
Since that day things got worse and worse. He couldn't leave her alone anymore. She would go out of the house and get lost in the neighbourhood. Peter was worried sick the first time that happened, but luckily the neighbour found her when he walked home from work and brought her home.
So Peter did something he never wanted to do but had to. He brought May to and nursing home. She was very confused about why and took a long time to adapt. But after 5 weeks, she was happily living in the nursing home. Peter would visit at least 5 times a week but tried every day.
But one day, he broke down after visiting.
"Good morning May!" Peter said as he approached May in the living room.
"Good morning." She answered in her kind voice.
"How are you doing today?"
"I'm doing fine, the weather is beautiful. I would love to go outside!" She smiled brightly.
"Let's search for your coat then. So we can take a walk outside."
"Sounds like a lovely idea."
So Peter went to May's room and grabbed her coat. Put on his coat and help May with hers. And they went outside. The nursing home had a big green garden, with a small walking pathway. So Peter and May went walking. Arm in arm. And in silence.
"Shall we get some ice cream?" Peter asks May, knowing she loves ice cream.
"Oh, yes, that sounds wonderful!"
So off they went, with permission of course, to the ice cream shop 2 blocks away. Peter ordered him and May some ice cream and they sat outside at a table.
"Here is your ice cream May."
"Thank you, uhm" She paused for a second. "Thank you." She repeated. Peter sight quietly. They ate some ice cream in silence.
"How did we meet again?" May asks suddenly. Peter was taken aback by this question.
"You don't remember?"
"I- uhm. I'm sorry." She was quiet for a second. "Are you a nurse?"
"No May, I'm not a nurse."
"Oh, okay."
Peter didn't want to accept it. He couldn't.
"May?"
"Hmm?"
"Who is my uncle?"
"I don't know. Should I know him?" She sounded confused.
"Do you know who my aunt is?"
"I need to think about that." She paused and thought. "I don't know."
"You don't know who my aunt is?" Peter asked softly. May looked at him with a little sadness in her eyes.
"I want to answer but I don't know."
"Do I look familiar to you?"
"Uhm, I guess so." She paused for a second. "Are you a nurse?"
"No May, I am not a nurse." Peter smiled at her but it was hard. It was hard for him to keep a smile on his face. "Eat your ice cream, before it melts." He said, trying to distract her, but mostly himself.
They continued to eat their ice cream in silence and walked back to the nursing home. When they entered a nurse looked at them and called someone. Who took May from him.
"Bye May."
"Bye." She didn't say his name. That was his breaking point.
Tears started to fall as he was guided by a nurse to a private room.
"What happened Peter?" The nurse, Esmee, asked. Esmee and Peter knew each other from all the visits to May. She was a 21-year-old nurse, and they can get along pretty good.
"May, she... she uhm. She has forgotten me." Saying it out loud has made it a fact. He completely broke down. Sobbing.
"Oh, Peter." Esmee hugged him as he cried into her shoulder. "I wish I could do something for you." She murmured softly.
After a few minutes Peter his crying became less, as he just stared at the ground.
"Peter?" Esmee asks. But she didn't get any response. "Peter?" She asks again, worried. Still no response. "Peter?" She tapped his shoulder, but still no response. "Shit," She said quietly. She walked out of the room to find a colleague to ask for help, she didn't know what to do.
"Tom!" She called. Tom turned around and immediately walked towards her when he saw her distress.
"What's the matter?" He asks.
"You know Peter? The nephew of May Parker?"
"Yeah, I know him, why?"
"Come with me." They walked to the private room where Peter was still zoned out.
"Oh." Was Tom his reaction when he saw Peter. "What happened?"
"May forgot him..." She said sadly.
"Oh no, poor boy."
"He broke down, but now he's not responding anymore. I don't know what to do."
"Have you tried looking in his phone for his emergency contacts?"
"Oh, great idea." Esmee grabbed Peter's phone, opened it with his face scan and went to his emergency contacts. There was one. Tony.
She clicked the contact, hoping for an answer.
"Hey kid, haven't talked to ya in a while, how are you?"
"Hey Tony, this is Esmee for the nursing home."
"Nursing home? Since when is Peter in a nursing home, is he alright?"
"Well, Peter isn't in a nursing home, but his aunt is. And Peter isn't okay. He broke down and now he isn't responsive anymore."
"I'm already on my way, I will be there in 10."
"Okay, thank you, Tony." So now they have to wait 10 minutes. And they tried everything to get Peter responsive again. But nothing got Peter out of his dissociated state.
After 10 minutes Tony arrived, Esmee and Tom didn't expect Tony Stark to show up but now wasn't the time for questions. Esmee explained a little, how May is living here now with her worsened Altheimer. Tony thanked them for taking care of Peter and took Peter to the compound.
When Tony brought Peter to the living room and set them on the couch, Peter seemed to wake up.
"Tony?" Peter said in a very small voice. Tony could hear the pain in his voice.
"Yes kiddo, I'm here."
"She forgot me, Tony. She doesn't know who I am anymore." Peter cried.
"Oh kiddo, I wish I could help you, but nothing can cure Altheimer." Tony hugged Peter as he cried.
"I feel- I feel like I've lost her. Like I've lost my aunt, my mom. I want my aunt back, I want my mom back." Peter has never really called May mom, until now. When it's too late.
Tony and Peter sat on the couch, talking about what happened and some other things until Peter was calmed down.
"Sorry to say Pete, but you look exhausted. How about you take a shower and go to bed. You still have the same room as before."
"I can't, I have class in a bit." Peter looked at the clock and saw it was almost 7 pm.
"Class? At night?" Peter hummed in response. "Why not during the day? Like any other college student."
"Can't, I have work during the day."
"Wo-work? Peter, kid, what is your daily schedule?"
"Work from 8-4, classes from 7-11 at night, Spider-Man from 11-3, visit May when I can," Peter answered like it was normal.
"Kiddo, that's not healthy."
"Can't really change it."
"You can. Come live here, with me, you can quit your job. Take normal day classes and get some actual sleep."
"Can I?" Peter looked desperately at Tony.
"Yes, you can."
Peter looked relieved. Like a big burden was taken off his shoulders.
"And please, take this semester off. You deserve some rest."
"Mkay."
"Now go take a shower and sleep."
Peter nodded and did what Tony said. And he slept for 14 hours straight.
The ending sucks, but I'm not gonna lie. I cried while writing this... Welp.
