Peter wasn't one for constant things. He was used to change, used to having his small comforts pulled out from under him at the slightest notice. He didn't bother to decorate his small apartments that he only occupied for a few months at a time at the most, it only made it more difficult to leave when his mission was over.

He couldn't afford to have any ties when he left, couldn't have any regrets about leaving. It only made his job more difficult, and that was something that he definitely didn't need.

His job was already dangerous enough to threaten his life, he needed every feeling of safety that he could find.

If you're wondering what his job was, and why it was so dangerous, no worries!

Agent Parker, field agent for Shield.

His existence was a lonely one, for he had made the decision very early on to work without a partner and never bothered to ask for a change. It was better alone, any way, for he was able to form his plans to his strengths and he didn't have to talk to anyone else other than his superiors. He particularly liked that he wasn't responsible for anyone other than himself, but even that had its downsides.

Like how if he got injured, he had to get himself out of the line of fire without help.

Despite that, he remained alive and continued to wake up every morning to an empty, blank apartment and a cold pot of coffee from the night before.

His life was a lonely one, but he almost didn't dare hope for something different.

Peter got up one morning with an odd feeling. It wasn't quite him being sick, per say, but more an overwhelming foreboding that something bad was going to happen.

Still, your job doesn't care about foresight, so Peter got up and plodded into the apartment's small bathroom to get ready.

He was stationed in New York right now, having finished a job a few cities to the south and expecting one towards the northern New England area. The lights didn't bother him at night, for he had grown up in this area and he was happy to be back after being all over the world, even if he wasn't allowed to message any childhood friends.

Man, it had been ages.

Peter wondered what Ned had been doing. Last he heard, May was doing fine, but how were her and Happy?

Questions that would remain unanswered, because Peter was running late to be sent off on a new mission.

He rushed out of the door as he grabbed his coat, yawning.

The drive to where he was going (classified information, mind you) was of course filled with traffic, but he made it eventually and even had enough time to sit down for a moment and drag a hand through his hair before the boss' secretary called his name.

"Mr. Parker?"

He looked up and smiled, putting on a face of false confidence as he strolled into the office.

The man at the desk raised his head as Peter walked in, nodding in acknowledgement. "Agent, glad to see you here today."

"Me too, sir. It's good to be back in New York."

"I'd imagine. Now," he gestured at a chair, "please do take a seat, and you can get started on your new assignment."

Peter moved to sit down. "Me, sir? Are you not going to speak to me about it, as protocol calls for?"

"No, Agent, because your new mission is past my level of clearance. We've got a higher-up coming to speak with you."

As if waiting for those very words, the door was flung open and who was there but Nick Fury.

"Agent Parker. Your name precedes you, I am glad to finally have the opportunity to meet you."

Peter looked at the famous man and could hardly believe it. "Oh, uh, and you. Sir. What an honor."

"I'd certainly hope so. Now, why do you think I am the one to give you your assignment?"

Peter didn't put too much thought into it. "Because it's a classified case and the least people who know about it, the better?"

"Close," Fury said. "You usually work alone, don't you, Parker?"

"Yessir."

"And you usually do very well, don't you?"

"Yessir." By now, he was getting a little nervous.

"Do you like working by yourself?"

Peter hesitated for a moment. "Without a doubt, sir."

Fury gave that some thought. "I am afraid that you are going to have to put that aside, Parker. I have a mission for you and you need to complete it."

"Understood, sir." Peter thought that was it, but Fury continued.

"I've got a person that I think you'd work well with, and she's the only one that I think could beat you in a duel."

"Is it necessary, sir?"

"Undoubtedly," Fury handed Peter a manila folder. "Read this over and come back tomorrow to meet your new partner."

Peter tried to protest, but the older man left the room without another cryptic word. Peter was ushered out after a bit, and he was left wondering what the next day would bring after so long in solitude.

He read through his files, looking over what the mission would be. There wasn't much mentioned, just in case it fell into the wrong hands, but just enough to let him know where he was going and the general gist of the mission.

No mention of his new 'partner'.

Getting up the next morning was just as difficult as the days before, but there wasn't much he could do.

When he entered the building where he worked, he was lead to a room where Fury stood.

"Welcome. Agents, I hope you work well together."

The woman next to Fury turned around and Peter swore that he felt his lungs close up in shock.

"Michelle?"

"Peter?"

They stared blankly at each other for a minute before Fury spoke up. "It seems you know the other. I'll take my leave for a bit to let you get comfortable, then I'll come back and speak about the mission."

The room was quiet as Fury's footsteps on the carpet faded into silence.

Sure, Michelle and Peter knew each other from Decathlon, but they never got to know each other. Peter was always the scraggly nerdy kid with nothing special about him, and Michelle was always the slightly-creepy introvert that no one really wanted to mess with. They never not got along, but they weren't exactly friends, either.

Michelle was the first one to say something, although perhaps she wished she didn't. "Geez, Parker, you got buff."

Peter blushed. "Oh, uh. Thanks?"

It was awkwardly quiet, then, the worst kind of silence that one could encounter.

"Preferred weapon?"

Peter squinted. "What?"

"Come on, Parker, if we're gonna work together, we need to learn each other's fighting style. What's your favorite weapon to work with?"

Peter thought for a moment. "I don't know, to be completely honest. Whatever I can use, I use."

The questions continued as the atmosphere began less awkward, and before they knew it, Fury came back to tell them about the mission.

As much as Peter really didn't want the liability that was a partner after so many years of going solo, he figured he had the best one he could have.

Maybe this mission would go okay, maybe he could learn to let other people into his life after so long of waking every morning to a sunset lit by his loneliness.
