Peter sighed for what felt like the thousandth time, and lowered his head into his hands in defeat. He had gotten through high school, he had gotten through college, finals, patching together his resume-
only to be defeated by a reckless teen.
Don't get him wrong, he loved Morgan with all of his heart, but she was remarkably... younger-Peter like.
She did AcaDec, she was brilliant, she was nerdy and had a small friend group, and midnighted as a teenage superhero that thought she knew everything that there was to know about being heroic.
Peter had promised Pepper to look after Morgan when Morgan had insisted that she wanted to be like her father, but he didn't know it'd be this much work.
This was just a regular Tuesday night, and Peter already wanted the weekend to be back.
"What do you mean, I'm reckless?" Morgan demanded, having just finished fighting a fight with Peter. "You were doing this when I was your age and stood up for doing the right thing!"
Peter ushered Morgan into the small medical space of the lake house where he'd brought her. "I specifically told you to sit this one out and focus on school! I told you that it was too much for you to handle, but what did you do? You ignored me and came anyway, and got hurt. This is why I told you to stay back, because I hate it when you get hurt!"
"You get hurt all the time! It's part of the trade!"
"No," Peter said, trying to keep his cool. "I get hurt protecting you, because you haven't trained enough. I'm not asking you to stop being a hero, I'm asking you to put it on pause and get better."
He handed Morgan off to the doctor that stayed at the lakehouse, and moved to leave. He just wanted to get to sleep.
"Dad would've let me keep going out." Morgan said, trying desperately to catch Peter's attention.
He whirled around, sick of the conversation. "Don't pull that card, because he wouldn't've. We had something happen exactly like this, only he was telling me to stop. I'm telling to you take a breather and not get yourself killed."
They had arguments like this, but nothing quite as heated, and Peter didn't like where it was going. They were both tired, both not thinking clearly, someone was going to say something they'd regret.
"Well, maybe if you'd stopped, he wouldn't have died."
Irrelevant, of course. Utterly inconceivable. Miles off of the point, but Peter snapped.
"You don't think I hate myself for letting Mr. Stark die? You have more to learn than I thought. You know where to find me when you're mature enough to realize that being a hero isn't just for the thrill."
With that, Peter left. He didn't even say hello to Pepper like he would have, just left and slammed the door. He was sick of being a parent, and wanted to go home.
So, now, Peter was sunk deep into his couch, not bothering to keep the clawing grasp of sleep away.
He was woken up the next day by the blaring alarm that he had set on his watch, an annoying reminder that he was an adult and needed to go to work.
Of course, he worked at Stark Industries, and practically ran it with Pepper and MJ.
Anyway, he fished around for his phone, only to find a few missed calls from MJ. Figuring that he had a few minutes, he called her back. She picked up immediately.
"You have some explaining to do, Peter, you never forget to call after you drop Morgan off."
Peter winced, remembering the harsh words that had been said. "We had an argument, and I just passed out on my couch."
They talked for a little bit as Peter got ready, but before much longer, he had to go.
His day went pretty normal, filled with meetings and orders and the occasional tinkering in the lab. Normal, at least, until he turned on the large TV that hung in the corner of his lab.
"There is a battle taking place near one of the prestigious schools in New York. Although Spider-Man is nowhere to be seen, the sidekick that he has had for a few months now is trying to distract the man and his henchmen while citizens are evacuated from the area."
Peter nearly spit out his coffee, but managed to swallow it while suiting up. He leapt out of the window to go help Morgan, who he was still slightly mad at.
By the time he had thought about the situation and had arrived at the fight scene, he was desperately ready to punch. someone. Anyone, really.
He landed next to Morgan, who stopped her witty commentating and stayed silent.
He heaved a sigh. "I can't be mad at you kiddo, but please, watch your back."
With that, He flung himself at the main bad guy while Morgan pitched in by taking care of the extras. It was all fine and dandy, and Peter was having fun, before the villain stopped aiming at Peter.
It took a moment for Peter to figure it out, but by the time he had, there wasn't any to warn Morgan, so he did what he had to. He hurled himself in front of the blast and plummeted to the ground.
He blacked out for a moment or two, but no more, and forced himself to stand up. Morgan wouldn't be able to handle everyone at once.
The blast that he had taken was something else, and the vague feeling of dizziness didn't leave him as he continued to fight.
He only allowed himself a breather once it was over, once he knew that Morgan was safe.
"Thanks." Morgan said, looking up at the man she considered her brother.
"No pro-" Peter yanked his mask up halfway and fell to his knees, vomiting. He moved his hands to help prop himself up, panting and tired.
"Whoa, hey, are you alright?"
No, but he'd never admit it.
"Yeah, you get back to school now, I'll be fine in a minute."
He wasn't, in fact, fine in a minute, but he was able to pull himself up and stagger into a dark alley away from the public eye, where he had Karen (who had been screaming at him) call MJ.
"Are you alright? I saw you fall."
He chuckled softly, then let out a quiet groan of pain. "I-uh, can you come pick me up? Karen'll send you my location." He didn't like how sticky his suit was getting- and he didn't think that it was just sweat.
Don't ask him what happened after that, because he really didn't know. He knew that it was painful, and that he vomited a few times, but other than that the only thought that had been going through his head was that thank God it hadn't hit Morgan.
When Morgan returned to find that Peter had been hospitalized, this time much worse than any of the other times, it really put her into her place. She realized that maybe she wasn't quite ready to parade around the city with Peter, and that she did have a long way to go with her training.
It all ended well, though, and Peter promised that she could be his sidekick once she was better.
