The sound of arguing echoed through the compound, and from a different room came three groans.
Bucky, Loki, and Peter exchanged glances as if to say this again? Yes, it was a common occurrence to hear loud discussions between Steve, Thor, and Tony, but did they really have to do it at 3pm?
I mean, didn't Steve need a nap?
Peter had just gotten back from school and May had said he could stay the night- but if this noise kept going, he might not.
After all the events of Civil War, the Avengers patched things up as well as they could. Of course, it wasn't perfect, and out of nowhere the rift between Tony and Steve would reopen and relight the fire of rage. The Infinity War made it worse.
Thor would join in because he thought it was all in good fun, but it wasn't, really. He was a major part of the ruckus.
Amidst the big three fighting like cats, their 'sidekicks', so to say, had joined together in search for peace and quiet. Peter, whose hearing was dialed up to eleven, hated hearing Tony yell, but sometimes his mentor forgot about that. Loki liked mischief, but the pure unbridled rage that came out in waves scared him. It reminded him of Odin and his childhood, of stuff that Thor didn't even know about. Bucky never liked loud noises, his weapons made him flinch and Steve knew that. But, then again, Steve left Bucky for the forties again, so how much did Steve care?
The misfits, as they liked to call themselves, often would hide when the arguments resurfaced so that they weren't pulled into it and expected to take sides.
This was one of those times, evidently.
Loki sighed softly, looking over at Bucky and Peter, who were both trying to make themselves as small as possible.
"Wanna ditch?" He suggested. "I know a nice ice cream place that serves drinks."

THREE HOURS LATER
* * *
The argument had subsided, and now the three big men were in separate rooms, fuming. They each went to search out their mentee, brother, or best friend, only to find nothing. They ran into each other in the living room, glaring.
On the coffee table was a note, written in Loki's relaxed black scrawl.
"lol catch you later, come find us when you gentlemen can behave."
It was quiet for a moment, sweet, blessed silence, until the noise level skyrocketed.
"It's your fault!" Accused Steve, pointing a finger at Thor.
Aghast, Thor responded, "How on Midgard is this my fault? You started the yelling match."
"Well he's your brother!" Yelled Tony.
"Don't agree with me, Tony. We all know that you're only in this for the money that you can make from the kids' adventures." Steve said, eyes narrowing.
"I almost dies to protect your sorry butt and this is the thanks I get?"
"Oh, don't play that card." Said Steve angrily, "I--"
Tony interrupted. "Yeah, while you were dancing with Patsy Cline or whatever, I was raising a child and helping the world!"
"I protected the world so many times, I was done! I never wanted this, I wanted to die in that ice, but I was happy for once, since being revived!"
"I've never been!"
"Then you're used to it. Suck it up and let's find our missing people." Steve hissed.
It was deathly quiet, like that moment after a concert once the instruments have played their final note and are waiting for their applause. Only, there was no applause and no crowd. Only anger.
"Fine." Tony said. "But we've got to learn to get along. Can you play fair, Cap?"
Steve rolled his eyes. "Don't call me that. I put up the shield, I'm just Steve."
"Yeah," Tony scoffed. "And you left behind your best friend. If I didn't know better, I'd say he was in love with you."
It was silent for a moment, like Tony had struck a nerve.
When Steve spoke again, it was quiet and controlled, as if he was physically restraining his anger. "Let's go, Stark. They're probably getting into all sorts of trouble."
Thor had no problem getting along with them, unless they talked smack about Loki, which he didn't like.
Steve and Tony had some issues, though.
~
"Oh, go suck Hulk's big toe." Tony snapped.
Steve laughed, "How old are you, Stark? Twelve?"
"On a scale from one to ten, yes. Now, do you need a nap? Or maybe some applesauce? Oh, do you wanna go play Yahtzee?"
"Grow up, my men! This is no time for arguments. Are you any closer to tracking them?" Thor asked, interrupting another small squabble.
Tony sighed. "I'm getting there. I'm going as fast as I can so that I don't have to deal with this guy any more." He jabbed a thumb in Steve's direction.
"Oh, that's rich coming from you--"
* * *
"What d'you think they're up to?" Peter asked, taking a sip of his milkshake.
"Probably arguing." Bucky said.
Loki agreed. "Yeah, but I hope they grow up soon because I don't know how much longer I can pay for Peter's ice cream." He took a sip of his margarita.
Peter laughed, "It's six o'clock and you're drinking when you can't get drunk, which is much more expensive than ice cream. Besides, I've only been eating--"
"For three hours?" Bucky finished, amused, as he took swig from his drink, which was probably something strong.
It was quiet for a moment, but it was comfortable silence, so they sat, content.
Loki suddenly leaned forward. "Ooh, let's talk about something interesting. Crushes- do y'all have any?"
Peter was urged to tell his story, so he started with Liz and continued on to MJ. The other two made sympathetic noises, but they had to laugh when The Vulture opened the door.
"Ok, Buck, you go next!" Peter said, slightly delirious from all of the sugar he'd consumed.
Bucky sighed, a long, heavy sigh.
"Oooh my mans needs another drink-" Loki signaled to a waitress, who brought over a suitable liquid, which Bucky consumed before beginning his story.
"So, I'm not gonna name any names, but say I have... Say I had a Liz. I thought that he-- she, my Liz, was gonna be the one, we were gonna get married and adopt some kids, grow old togetherrrr," Bucky drawled on for a bit before continuing. "Then, say my Liz learned about my feelings and absolutely dropped me, friend-zoned me, no- he best-friend zoned me. Which is so much worse, cuz we'd go to movies and hang out all the time but never as what I wanted. I never brought up my feelings again, but they were there, and then after all the Winter Soldier stuff I wake up to see his face, looking so hopeful, talking about all that he did to get me back. So , y'know, I thought I had a chance! But no, he freaking left me for some girl after kissing her- THEIR niece, left me so hopeful that we'd finally get our fairytale ending, but no, he went and found a different princess. I just wanted to be his princess!"
Bucky started crying for a bit, and Loki placed a comforting hand on his back while Peter hugged him.
Then, suddenly, he kept talking. "Oh, but then, After my Liz has gone, he's all grown up and old, I realize that I'm not as devastated as I should be. So, you know when you can physically feel that Oh no moment? Yeah, I look over to see my MJ, who is waaaay hotter than any man should be, and then I take months to come to terms with the fact that I got over my Liz, and now my MJ is my love, and that brings me to the present. Which sucks, because Steve- I mean my Liz still thinks I like him but I don't, and my MJ doesn't even know that I like him, and his suit is so amazing and I have to look at it every day--"
Bucky finally stopped talking, and was now full-out drunk.
"What'd you do to him?" Peter asked, watching the nearly passed-out ex-assassin.
Loki grinned. "I slipped him some Asgardian mead. He needs this though, he's been moping for weeks."
"Have not." mumbled Bucky before going quiet again.
It was quiet for a while after that, with Bucky full on passed out, Peter getting his massive sugar crash, and Loki leaning back in his chair because he was getting a headache.
* * *
Thor let out a booming announcement. "I have found them!"
Tony and Steve rushed over, looking through a window to see the three people that they were looking for, asleep or very nearly there.
"What happened?" Tony asked as he pushed open the door and walked over to Peter, who was grinning like a madman.
"Thor!" Loki said, happy but tired. "We had fun... did you? Are you gonna still yell at us?"
"Brother, we don't yell at you!" Thor said, confused.
Bucky pried open his eyes. "You guys, y'know, y'know, ya yell, and 's loud, and brings up the unhappy... things for us."
"Unhappy things?" Steve asked hesitantly.
"Yeah!" chimed in Peter. "The nightmares! They're real scary but we don't wanna bother you guys, and we get scared of you too because it reminds us of all the sad times."
It was as quiet as an early winter morning after snowfall, when the snow has yet to be tainted by footsteps and the birds are still sleeping.
An unspoken truce was made then, between Tony and Steve. If there was one thing that they cared about enough to stop their fighting, it was the people in their arms.
A clatter came from outside, and the door opened to reveal Sam Wilson.
Bucky gave a little happy noise. "MJ!"
"What?" asked Sam. "That's not my name."
Bucky rolled out of Steve's arms (which were in good shape for his age), and stumbled over to Sam, hugging him. "No, I know, but you," He poked Sam's chest. "You're my MJ. Not my Liz. By the way, can you wear those green pants of yours more often? I--"
Sam hoisted Bucky up. "Yeah, you're drunk, man."
That didn't stop Sam from smiling like an idiot, though.
