Chapter 16: Takes Two

The inside of Lord Charles manor was glum, old red tapestries hung up on the cement walls, the old wooden floor had no shine to it. What was even more odd was the lack of windows, not a single window.

Charles sat behind an oak desk in his study surrounded by so many books I had to keep myself from reading the spines. Rone sat a crossed from Charles and the rest of us stood behind Charles. "This is Berella and Nadia, your creators. Lord Orion and his people live in what the people now call Orion mostly elves and they are protected by me and your creators," I almost sighed in relief, he had Orions back I knew he would deep down. "Lord Ash the dragon you met last night has a village in the mountains with hundreds of survivors most all dragons and some witches." He didn't bother to introduce Gregory and Charles didn't care to ask. "I understand you enslave your humans," Rones jaw twitched. "That will end today, every human who lives here is to pack their things and be ready to ride to court in the morning. I haven't yet came to a decision on what to do with this town but for the time being I brought our laws written in ink. I'd like you to look over it thoroughly. Then I'd like you to enforce these rules thats the only way I'll ever appoint you a lord."

"We dont have the means or want to end up on the courts bad side," Charles coward under Rones stern eyes I didnt need my empathy to tell he was scared shitless.

"Do you mind if I take a look around?" I asked innocently.

   "Of course."

"I will accompany you," Ash said coming beside me, Rone gave us a dismissive wave and dove back into conversation with Charles.

"Be safe, let me know if you find anything," Berella spoke into my mind as we exited the study and into the damp feeling hall.

"You be safe," I said back.

"I know what you are up to," Ash said as we passed a couple of fae maids, I could hear their giggles and gossip about Ash as we passed them.

"I dont trust Charles and something tells me he's a bad seed so I need to find a reason to lock him up," I said simply after all I always went with my gut. "It would be smarter to appoint a Fae or even a human from court, along with some Trax and Ashs guards to ensure their safety here."

"Charles is power hungry, he wont let go of this place easily and it seems this town worships him."

"They either stand with us or against us, I'd like to think his people are smart enough to follow their King."

"And Creator, is it just me or Rone seems a bit too focused? One second he's tripping over his own crown and the next he's ready to be a king? Maybe you were holding him back," that's exactly what I wanted to hear. I shot him a haggard look.

"Less talking and more looking," I growled. A few minutes went by of poking around and finding nothing but awful decorating taste, the entire inside was so bland.

"Oh look," I spun around thinking Ash found something but instead he picked up a massive whip hung on the wall of Charles bedroom. "Looks like our Charles is into foreplay," he wiggled his brows.

"You dont usually make jokes," I eyed him passively.

He shrugged, "I'm feeling chummy today."

I guess its better then rude and distant, "Lets get out of here theres nothing interesting."

"I wouldnt say nothing interesting," he chuckled to himself as we exited the room and into the hall.

The last stop was the kitchen, I turned around in the massive kitchen feeling defeated until I watched Ash pry open a secret door behind a pantry.

"Secret tunnels," I smiled to myself. I wonder what would this be used for?

"Theres no light," Ash groaned before he could complain much more I summoned a ball of light in my hand, its heat caressing us impressively.

"Don't touch it," I swatted his finger away, "You'll lose your entire hand this stuff is deadly," I warned.

"You're a killing machine," I grinned as Ash looked down at me adoringly but within seconds it was gone and I awkwardly walked into the short secret passage. Ash was too tall so he had to slough slightly. "What do you think this is used for?" I asked aloud.

"Beats me," he shrugged. "We should still be quiet in case there is someone down here," Ash warned. I tend to talk to much and Ash well he didn't really talk at all. I wondered if he even had friends of course Blade but their friendship was more then that, it was brotherhood.

We reached the end of the dark damp hall, it took us to a tight rounded stairway that went down, "I have a bad feeling about this," as soon as we hit the end my chest tightened. Instantly I felt trapped... as if someone was choking me and I couldn't breathe the fight in me dulled. "Whatever is down there is not going to be good."

"What do you feel?" He asked lightly as my ball of light flickered in the dark.

"Horror, I feel horror and anxiousness," so much of it I was drowning in it. Lately I've been able to suppress my empathetic side, control it most of the times but not at such a large scale. Ash drew his sword his grey stone eyes flickering red.

"Are you ready?" I nodded leaving his gaze and walking down the stairs, step by step my stomach churned with disgust, the smell of rot and metal too much to bare. I stopped in my steps, Ash so close, our swords gleaming in the light I provided.

Two men sat in a torch lit hall, their swords set on the table scattered with bottles of liquor and smoke. I made eye contact with Ash and spoke into his mind shocking him at first, "I take on the fat boy," I told him. He rolled his eyes but nodded, "Now."

I had to admit we made a great team... with ease Ash broke the small mans neck and because he was a Fae he would only be out for a few hours. I decided to go the easy route and spell the man asleep. We were interrupted by muffled screams behind the locked stone door, "Keys," Ash said fishing a single key in the sleeping mans pocket.

   "They're prisoners aren't they?" I shuttered.

"Yes," I couldnt tell what he was thinking but I knew he was boiling in rage as his hands shook.

When he opened the door the first thing I noticed was the never ending hall of cells, Ash unlocked the first cell containing a young boy. "Dont be scared," Ash gave the boy the biggest smile I've seen from him yet, a soft welcoming gesture. The boys wide oak eyes bore into mine and then Ash's, his freckled olive skin looking too green under the dim lights. "Why are you in here? I dont mean you any harm but you must answer me truthfully."

"Because I exits," the boy even pumped out his tiny chest a torn look on his stained face, shrugging out of Ashs grip.

   "What do you mean?"

"You dont know?" The boy asked hesitatingly, the people in there cells began to moan and groan, some even pleading to be freed.

"I'm Ash, and this is Nadia she is from court, the royal town do you know what that is?"

"That couldn't be true, this is the royal town," the boy argued, now we were confused.

"Who told you that?" I stepped forward and the boy jerked backward, he was more scared of me then Ash? I realized I still held my sword firmly in my hand, I guess I didnt need it now...

   "King Charles."

King?" I muttered. "You've been lied to Charles has committed treason posing as the Royal family," it made me sick, he was a poser a monster and now everyone would think that of court, of Rone.

"Why are you in here? Be more specific this time we cant help you unless you help us," Ash pleaded.

"I'm here because by law I should not exist," he said it like it was the most normal law to exist. "Humans were only allowed one child each to provide more comfort to the fae," he spat unable to look us in the eyes. "My parents entire line were killed and since fae are against killing newborns they're waiting till I'm twelve to cut my head off. Two more days," the kid rested his head on the wall and stared up at the ceiling. "Your either here to save us, or turn around and pretend you never saw us either way you dont have much time before Beaver and Borris wake up."

"Is that really there names?" Ash suppressed a smile.

The boy gave him a sly grin, "You'd wonder why people are even striked with fear over the buffoons."

Ash gave the boy the keys, "Only open the cells to children, for now I need to make sure of all these peoples charges before they are freed. Can you help us?"

The boy finally stood back up, the only thing surrounding him was a damp pillow and an old tapestry I assumed was used for a blanket. "I owe you my life," the boys lip trembled only slightly. "I'm Kendrick." I didnt have words, the disgust and hate that bellowed deep inside of me, I wanted to kill Charles where he stood have my face be the last he ever sees.

"You should stay with the kid I'll handle Charles," I tried to make a start to his study but Ash grabbed my arm roughly.

"What do you thinks going to happen? Your going to stroll in and kill these peoples "king" we will start an uprising theres an easier way to go about this. Remember we are not cursed anymore, you dont need to fight not always."

"He deserves death you know it as much as I, I'm sure this will do the trick," I said pulling out my small blade. "He wont even see me coming."

"We're going to arrest him, put him through a trial have his people see our lands and realize the safe and peace we provide. Dont be irrational, put the knife away." Was I imagining this? Just yesterday he was ready to kill them all in the woods.

"Fine," I swallowed. "If he tries anything I will kill him."

"He wont not if he's a smart man. Rone will announce the arrest and fill in Charles position in the mean time. You said you trusted me that you wanted to work together did you mean it?"

"Of course," I glared at his grip on my arm and he let it go clearing his throat. "Go make the arrests then," before he could leave I added, "Be safe."

  "You too."

After Ash left I helped Kendrick usher the young children by the door urging them to keep quiet. I couldn't just stroll into the halls with all these kids not without backup or Charles arrest. All i could do was wait and I wasnt used to waiting. There were at least thirty kids under the age twelve all huddled together, watching the door.

"Someone's coming," I stiffened. "Close your eyes," I hissed to the kids, they all listened minus Kendrick who only stood taller with the knife I leant him raised eye level. I wondered where he even learned to hold a knife?

"I knew you would be a problem," it was the fae from the woods, the one filled with so much hatred. "You might control us now that you have the dragons by your side, but your not safe-"

I so wanted to rip her heart from her chest but from the corner of my eye I watched Kendrick shake violently dropping his knife to the ground.

I spelled her to sleep although it wasnt easy she tried to resist and lash out but when I butted her in the head with the back of my sword she dropped like a bag of potatoes. "You clearly have no idea who you're dealing with. Its not the court you should be afraid of its me."
