Appearance

Aine McCullen appears as a diminuative, skinny young woman with small breasts and slender hips. She has a heart-shaped face, with a pointed chin, button nose, and prominent cheekbones. She has freckles on her nose and cheeks that seem to shift from brown to blood red. Her eyes are green and appear to be too wide for her face in addition to being slightly tilted as if there is some unknown Asian decent in her lineage.

Her voice is lilting and musical, with an odd accent.

Off duty she commonly wears a gingham dress, belted with a sash that is often adorned with embroidered runes. She often goes barefoot or wears deerskin mocassins. Her hair, when braided, falls to the middle of her back, and when unbraided, falls to her mid-thigh. Observers have commented that her hair appears to move on its own, and more than one observer claims that she "changes what she's wearing between one side of a doorway and another". Unlike many soldiers, she delights in her Class-A uniform and loves to wear it, although she has been repeatedly cited for wearing her skirt too short.

She doesn't change appearance, aside from gaining a 6" long scar on her forearm, until after she marries Paul Foster and has her first child. She then "plumps out", her breasts moving to small appearing B cup, her hips widening slightly, and her buttocks becoming 'rounder' in her own words. She gains stretch marks upon her breasts, belly, and inner thighs after the birth of her child, which she is strangely proud of.

After Desert Storm she had a single white lock on brow, approximately 2 inches wide.

In 1999, after the death of her husband, she wore a malachite ring in place of her wedding ring and dressed in somber colors.

History

Listed as "Aine McCullen XII" on her birth certificate, a child of "Aine McCullen XI", Aine was born the same day as Anthony Stillwater, in the same hospital, at roughly the same time, although Aine often comments during her childhood that she was born before both Anthony and Ineda, making her the eldest.

She once stated that she was often put in the crib with the Stillwater triplets, where she could bite Anthony Stillwater's twin brother and sister so she could be alone in the crib with him.

A "strange child" by all accounts, she publicly laid her claim on Anthony Stillwater in grade school. Part of a military tradition family in the backwoods of Onalaska, Washington, she was a highly competitive girl with a penchant for acting out. She was known for pranks, some quite painful, as well as mocking schoolmates and even older children. She was noted by teachers and being willful and disobedient, and many wrongfully suggested it was because she was the child of a high ranking Washington State Patrol officer. She was particularly noted for tormenting Anthony Stillwater, a classmate, and physically and verbally attacking any young girls who showed interest in the boy.

By her own admission, later in life and in private, she was cruel to her love interest.

Her home life consisted of learning household skills as well as farm live skills. She was a member of the Girl Scouts, acquiring badges quickly and easily. She also was close to her mother, also named Aine, spending time learning to sew patterns as well as learning about her family's religion, which was largely based on early Celtic beliefs. During her childhood she spoke only Gaelic at home and often annoyed teachers by pretending not to understand English or doing her homework or test answers entirely in Gaelic.

At age 12 she insisted on living with various family members who were stationed at different military posts across the United States. Supposedly "to learn about other family branches", this was a thinly masqueraded desire to stay close to Anthony Stillwater, who by then was living with his Uncle, Tiernan Stillwater, an Active Duty soldier in the United States Army. Once encountering Anthony Stillwater, she claimed him as her own and drove off any other girl who showed any type of interest in him.

She lost her virginity at age 12, wanting to explore physical pleasure. She once commented to someone later in life that she knew the very morning that Anthony Stillwater achieved his first erection and had had sexual intercourse with him by sundown that day. Sexual intercourse delighted her and she was aggressive and exploratory with it, feeling no shame at her enjoyment and participation in sexual activities with her boyfriend.

At approximately age 13 she stopped changing physically and delighted in her appearance. She enjoyed dance clubs, video arcades, and most of all, cruising. She pushed her boyfriend to work hard on his classes, get a job, and work hard around the house. She often lorded it over other girls her age how hard her boyfriend worked.

At 14 she moved out of her house, moving in with Anthony Stillwater, who was working at a slaughterhouse. She delighted in being a "housewife", and more than a few times bragged to other girls her age or older about how "My boy" bought her as presents with his paychecks after the bills were paid and food was purchased. Aine displayed inordinate pride in Anthony's achievements and lorded them over her female peers.

At fifteen Anthony Stillwater left her for another woman, and she became largely withdrawn, moving back home with her mother. Teachers and classmates stated she seemed moody and withdrawn. When Anthony Stillwater was sent to first Juvenile Hall and then to the US Army, Aine worked hard to convince his fiancé and later, wife, to leave him for his twin brother, eventually succeeding in driving the two apart.

When she turned 17 she ran out and defied her mother's orders, joining the military to once again chase after what she viewed as her property. She exceled in Basic Training, often mocking and teasing the other women for not being able to perform tasks she found easy. Instructors commented that her physical strength and endurance was far outside what her physique should have been able to provide. Aine dominated the other women during hand to hand combat training and pugil stick training, laughing as she did so. Aine manhandled and humiliated the other female soldiers in her Basic Training cycle during any hand to hand training. She received a written reprimand for challenging the female drill instructors to try to attack her all at once using "language unbecoming a soldier and derogatory terms and statements toward higher ranking soldiers and trainers." Once she entered ammunition specialist training she aimed directly for Special Weapons, having an easy time at first. Chemical training proved exceptionally difficult for her for unknown reasons. The blister agent exposure (by having a small drop placed on the non-dominant forearm) left no trace on her and did not seem to affect her skin, a fact her trainers quickly noted. However, she suffered a convulsive episode within an hour of exposure, and periodic bloody noses for nearly three days.

Her arrogance was attracting the attention of Blackbriar Ridge Training facility.

Aine's rampant sexuality during AIT was noted by her instructors. She seemed to delight in having a few sexual liaisons with someone, then dumping them and moving on to the next person. Her main sexual partners, Blackbriar noted, were of Irish or Scottish descent.

When she arrived at 2/19th SWG following the Masked Killer Incident, she immediately began to torment Stillwater. Aine called him by his birth name in front of everyone, forcing him to explain it, something she believed would humiliate him. She also attempted, repeatedly, to sexually assault him to "take what was rightfully hers".

For the first time in her life, she ran into women who were not afraid of her or her family, and found herself physically beaten twice in altercations with Nancy Nagle.

During the Spetsnaz attack upon the barracks, the bloodshed touched something old, dark, and primitive inside of Aine. While she had possessed a modicum of "supernatural" power while with her mother, the bloodshed and darkness of Alfenwehr suddenly seemed to increase her power. She found herself able to crawl on the walls and ceiling, ignore injuries that weren't sustained by cold forged iron, and able to do things that she knew even her mother, despite her mother's vast power, could not.

Despite all this, she tripped and cut her forearm badly, leaving a six inch long and half inch thick scar on her forearm. Her one and only scar.

She also discovered that she was a small thing. Barely worth notice except as a minor irritation by a dark vast and ancient force that made even her upbringing and heritage seem small and puny. This seemed to give her a modicum of humility.

She once commented that the mountain "had disdained even the tread of the great lizards anywhere near it, killing them when it could out of disgust. It hated mankind even when man was little more than a lemur screeching in the trees. It hated even before it was a mountain."

Aine became attached to members of Echo-Five-Actual, finding something she had been raised to believe she did not have: equals. She relinquished her hold and obsession with Anthony Stillwater, instead reveling in having real friends who were her equal. At this time, during the horrible after-effects of the high intensity combat, she took the name Hannah Lane to leave Aine McCullen behind.

During the summer following that event, she fell in love with the quiet and often withdrawn Paul Foster. She accompanied Foster when he went home to bury his parents, and although she played obedient housewife, she stood and fought by his side when things went bad. Instead of following secret trails back, she accompanied Paul Foster in handcuffs back to Blackbriar Ridge.

There she married him.

When the KGB hit the unit, she was shot twice as she stood staring at Paul Foster's dying body. For the first time she changed, physically. Right in front of the KGB operative she went from petite and little Hannah Lane to Aine of the Black Blood. Her arms and legs lengthened, her face elongated, and her teeth turned into meat tearing canines. When she howled her rage, the KGB agent took off running.

She then moved her husband to "her glade" which is apparently in the summer/spring section of Tir na Nog, and there she brought him back to the land of the living. She also tracked the KGB agent to a safehouse north of Moscow, and there she ate him.

It was then that it was revealed that some form of Anthony Stillwater was kept slumbering in a pool near her glade, a guardian she had known all of her life and could now name, making it obvious why she had been obsessed with him even at a young age.

She was captured and returned to the "mortal world" by John Bomber, Colonen Henry, Major Miner, and the SGM, while Nancy Nagle recaptured her husband.

During Operation Just Cause in Panama, Aine was constantly on edge, commenting more than once that the paths were dark and forbidden to her.

At the end of Desert Storm she was badly injured in combat, her husband having taken a critical brain injury. She was entrusted with the trigger to the medium atomic demolition mine that was to be used to destroy the chemical/biological warfare facility that Echo-Five-Actual had taken possession of.

She took her husband home to Kansas to care for him, asking for a year furlough from Special Weapons or a hardship discharge. Instead she was assigned to Fort Riley, Kansas.

Nobody asked how she was able to travel nearly a 150 miles one way to and from her home and her unit each morning and evening.

In 1994 she was stationed at Fort Bragg, and she took her husband with her. Something in her had changed, she was quieter, with less teasing and mocking than ever before. Almost like she was sad or waiting for something.

After the death of Tiernan Stillwater, she took to wearing a black ribbon in her hair.

In 1999 her husband died in an auto accident, although some people noted that she didn't seem bothered by it. Her children seemed unaffected by it, although the youngest was heard to ask more than once to "go see Daddy", making her command worry that she was planning on killing her children and herself. After going to speak with her at her home, her CO never asked about it and was quoted as saying: "Just drop it, never ask about it again." Aine's CO developed an alcohol abuse problem soon after.

In 2004, while working for the Defense Intelligence Agency, she vanished on mission and is presumed dead. She was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery in 2005. She was survived by her 5 children, who live with her family at the family farm in Onalaska, Washington.

Her oldest child lives in Kansas, having moved to Paul Lane's birth home in 2004, where she tends a small grave for her mother and father, working as a dispatcher for the town's emergency services.

Lieutenant General John Henry, in 2005, attended her funeral and as her coffin was lowered was heard to say: "and now the world is a little less magical place."

Aine McCullen/Hannah Lane's body was never recovered.
