Chapter 67 ~ Happiness

Kanji walked up to me and asked if I could follow him. He led me to the hill overlooking town as the boy from last time. "Here's the stuff I promised ya. N-No complaining, okay...?" The bleach blond boy handing the younger boy a stuffed rabbit. It was complete with a ribbon, a hat, and an umbrella. It was quite elaborate and super cute! "Whoa!! This is incredible! Where'd you buy it!?" I wanna know too! Kanji looked off, embarrassed. "Huh...? Wh-Who cares!?" Wait, did he? "But I want one too!" The boy cried, "Oh... Well, I got one for you." Kanji proceeded to pull out another stuffed rabbit. It was complete with clothes, shoes, a cap, and a soccer ball. Okay, I'm pretty sure he made these. And they're so good, they look like store bought toys. "For me!? Thanks!! But where'd you buy it...?" The little boy kept nagging at Kanji to tell him where he bought it. I chuckled, "Heh, just tell him the truth, Kanji.".
"S-Senpai... I-I made it..." I knew it. "You... made this?" The boy tilted his head, "Y-Y'got a problem with that...? If ya think it's so creepy, then give it-". Kanji was about to take the stuffed rabbits away until, "Wow! You're so cool!! Hey, can you make me something else!? Mom loves this kind of stuff!" The boy had stars in her eyes as Kanji got a little uncomfortable. Heh, not used to compliments, huh Kanji? Kanji agreed to the request, "You promised! I'm gonna go give this to Sana-chan! Thanks, Mister!!" As the young boy ran off. The bleach blond boy sighed, "I'm not that old, dammit... Hah, he said I'm cool...". I giggled, "It was pretty amazing, Kanji!" as he blushed, "Yeah, but it's not like sewing's good for anything...". Kanji then looked up, "But y'know... It ain't a bad feeling. 'Thanks,' huh...? Ahhh, it was nothing." Heh, he's just a giant, adorable softy.

His gaze shifted to the houses we could see from up here, "...This is a great place, huh? The wind is different up here... Never noticed before." I agree... I wish I could stay here... I shook my head from the chill air hitting my face, "Hey, Kanji? Would you teach me how to make those stuffed rabbits?" I asked. He was shocked at my question, but he smiled and nodded. "Yay!" I cheered and pumped my arm in the air. My underclassman laughed at my actions as we talked about our love for crafts. When the sun started to set, we separated into our own houses. Nanako welcomed me back before I walked up to my room and read another one of my graphic novels.

Mr. Kondo's loud voice was the only thing that kept me awake as my eyes threatened to droop. "'She was actually a robot.' This is important! I recommend that you memorize the context! Oh man, I'm sooo hungry. Did you all eat breakfast? I did, but it's already digested! I'm so hungry, even after eating lunch! I feel like I haven't eaten in ten years! Say, that reminds me. What figure of speech am I using when I say I haven't eaten in ten years? Yosuke! Take a wild guess!" I could hear Yosuke worrying, "Huh!? A g-guess...? How'd he get to this from breakfast? Hey, Yui... Do you know?". I sighed before quickly writing 'Hyperbole' on a slip of paper. Yosuke vocalized it, "Good guess, Yosuke! Hyperbole is just a gross exaggeration. We use it all the time when we're not even thinking about it to emphasize what we're saying. I don't even want to imagine having to go ten years without eating..." The lesson continued as Yosuke wrote on another slip of paper and handed it to me. It read, 'Thanks, Yui.'. The note made me smile as I went back to listening to the lesson.

I felt like hanging out with Ryuto today to see if he's feeling better from last time. "Ryu~Chan!" I called out to him from outside his class. "Hey, Kitty. You need anything?" He asks, "Not really, just curious if you wanna hang out today!" I smiled at him as he smiled back. "Sure, let's go." He had his arm around my shoulders as we walked outside. "So, does the fair maiden have a place in mind to go to?" His sudden chivalry made me chuckle, "Yeah, c'mon!" I ran ahead of him as he chased me. Without speaking, we made it a game where he would try to get me, but there was a considerable amount of distance between us. At least, that's what I thought. He tackled me onto the grass, "Heh, gotcha!" We were both laughing at how childish we were acting, but we didn't care. "That was fun, did you have this planned, Kitty?" He asked as I shook my head. "I was planning on talking to you at the shrine, you chasing me and us doing this was an added bonus." Ryuto stood up and extended his hand out, "Then let's go there!" I took his hand as, this time, we walked hand in hand instead of him chasing me.
We made it to the shrine as the fox welcomed us, "You know, I sometimes come here to feed this little guy. We've grown quite close, look at this little guy!" The fox was nuzzling against his legs and nipping at his hands. It was an adorable sight. "I know why you asked me to hang out today. You're worried about me, aren't you?" Ryuto asked as I nodded. He brought me into a slight hug by my head as I rested it on his shoulder. "Thanks for that, Kitty. I greatly appreciate it." He took a deep breath, "I never for the life of me would imagine we would reunite in a place like this. I thought the next time I would see you would be on TV as the Narukami Head, doing whatever endeavor you've set your heart on with that future husband of yours. To think we would spend this year together..." Yeah... "I think... I think I'm glad we didn't end up as an item." That made my eyes widen, "I've come to realize something through these days. I still care for you, but not in a romantic way. In some sort of a familial way, but not like Rise. I don't know how to contextualize it, but it's somewhat like that.".
I looked up at him and saw the sincerity in his eyes, "I know this is all confusing, but there is one thing I know for certain. You're someone I wish to stay beside. I still love you, Yui... But I know now that that love isn't romantic." He kissed my forehead as a tear rolled down his face and into mine. "So promise me, you won't leave me, Kitty?" I chuckled, "Only if you promise the same thing." We both shared a laugh as the fox yawned. "Thank you for everything, Yui." Those words... I feel like I don't deserve them... "In actuality, I should thank you. You were there for me whenever I needed you... More so than what I've done for you." My eyes casted down but they were shifted so that I could face him. "Don't talk about yourself like that. You being by my side is more than what I can ask for, don't forget that." Ryuto... Thank you.

We sat in silence for a while. The fox fell asleep on our laps with light snores coming from it, it was cute. The sun was about to set so we had to wake up the fox to get off of us. It wasn't happy about it but when Ryuto said he would bring food for it tomorrow, it yipped in contentment before we left. Ryuto walked me home to make sure I was safe before heading home himself.

On my way home after school at Samegawa, I ran into the guy who was afraid of cats. He saw me, "Y-You! You're the one who tried to feed me to that cat! Oh, er, sorry... I just can't stay calm when it comes to those damn cats... I-I have an idea... Do you know what cats like to eat? If I can sneak up and slowly touch them while they're chowing down on food, I'd be in control, right? B-But... To tell you the truth... I'm also... scared of fish! Y'know, those creepy eyes! All muddied! Looking this way! And those scales! U-Uhh... Is there some kind of cute fish? Sigh, I guess it's just a fact of life... There's no such thing as a cute fish. That must be why they live in the water, away from human sight..." Hmm... Maybe I should catch a fish and give it to him? Since I'm here, I should do that. But before I could go back home to get the fishing rod that old man gave me a while back, Kanji texted me. 'Yo, could you meet me at the river, Senpai?' I texted back that I would as I sat down at the flood plain and waited for him.
After a while, he arrived. "Hey, Senpai..." The bleach blond boy looked down, "What's up, Kanji?". His gaze turned to the river, " I can't get this place outta my head. I keep wonderin' if that rabbit the kid tossed out mighta washed ashore around here... If he finds it now, he'll just feel bad... Not that I'm wading in today or anything." Ah, I see. He really is just a giant softy, huh? "Hey, Mister!!" The boy from before just appeared between Kanji and I, "There you are! Sana~Chan was really happy!! I've been looking for you ever since!" Aww, what a sweet kid. "Look, kid, quit callin'... Ah, forget it." I couldn't help but giggle at Kanji's words, he really just gave up correcting this kid. "Can you make some more, Mister? My mom really wants one! Sana~Chan's mom does too! They said they'll pay you!" Oh wow, Kanji's gonna have quite the small business on the side. "Pay me!? I don't need that... I-it ain't like I'm a pro at this." Don't be modest, Kanji! You are a pro! "My mom wants a cat, and Sana-chan's mom wants a dog. And my teacher wants a pink alligator." A pink alligator? I remember that story, it was a very bittersweet story. It was one of the few stories that made me cry...
After trying to be modest about it to the kid, Kanji looked at the playful smile I quickly put on my face and sighed. "F-Fine, then... I'll get around to it sometime." The boy got stars in his eyes, "Yay! Thank you! Remember, you promised!" Before he ran away. "Strange situation I got myself into, ain't it?" Kanji chuckled to himself, "It's good for you!" As I lightly punched his arm. "Good...? I don't really know." He looked up to the sky, "When I was in elementary school, I fixed a classmate's bag this one time. Thinking back... I guess I liked her. I only did it to make her happy, but... The next day, all the girls were makin' fun of us... She cried. I didn't understand why, but y'know... I thought I'd done something wrong. So I never thought... I'd be thanked for doing this stuff. Haha, it feels good. Hearin' 'thank you'... I like it!" He smiled sheepishly, making me giggle again.

"Oh... Well, I gotta jet. I have to go to Okina Station. To the, uh... f-fabric shop. I'm outta material, so... L-Later!" And with that, he rushed off. I made my way back home and did some translating before bed.

Rise invited me to Okina after school but nothing much happened. I walked her home as Ryuto offered to walk me home and Rise also offered to walk me home. "We've got to talk, the three of us." Ryuto sternly said. Rise looked as if she knew what he was going to say and bit her lip. I looked on in confusion, "About what?" as he sighed. "You, Yosuke, and Rise, we need to talk about that." "If that's the case, shouldn't we involve Yosuke?" I interjected, "He doesn't know you're torn between him and Rise, he doesn't need to be involved anymore.". Rise's fist clenched, "Is there a reason for Yui to choose? She's going to get married when she's done with school, both Yosuke~Senpai are going to be heartbroken with that fact..." Ryuto looked up at the sky. "Yui, you will have to stand up against your parents." Wh-What...? "You're not going to be happy if you marry Hiroshi, isn't there any alternative? Why can't you take over the company on your own?" I looked down, "I don't know... The contract that was signed by my ancestors is with my parents and his parents... That and the idea of a female head without someone who would be just as powerful is unheard of in my family...". A shiver went down my spine. How could I forget that my future has been set in stone...?
"Did your parents take their copy of the contract with them to America?" My head popped up, "They only take necessary files with them on their business trips, why?". A smirk appeared on his face, "Ask one of the maids to search for that document. Ask that of Hiroshi too. You two need to find that contract and find a loophole. I want your future to be your own, Kitty. With that in place, you can finally choose who you want to be with. Whether it be with Rise or with Yosuke." Ryuto... "You really care about her, huh, Ryu? You sure you don't have feelings for her?" Rise teased which led to her brother smacking her on the back of her head. "Well, do it now, Kitty." O-Oh yeah... I called up Maid Suki first since she would be the hardest to convince. "Yes, Small Lady Yui. Do you need anything?" I paused for a bit before speaking, "W-Would it be too much trouble to ask if you could... Please, find the contract that says I have to marry Hiroshi~San...!".
It took a while for her to respond but when she did, "You do know what you're asking of me, right? I could be in deep trouble if the heads were to hear of this.". With a deep breath, "I-I... I want to control my future. I don't want to marry a man I don't love! I want to be the head of the family on my own terms!" She hummed in amusement. "I've waited seventeen years to hear those words come out of your mouth, Small Lady Yui. I will look around and ask the other maids to help me. You deserve to be happy with your future, and this is the first step. We will find it, I promise you." With those words, we exchanged farewells before hanging up. "She agreed to help me!" I cheered as Rise joined, "Now onto Hiroshi, you know what to do?" Ryuto added as I nodded.
I dialed him, "Yui? Do you need something?" he asked on the other line. "I'm trying to find a loophole in our marriage. If you can, could you find your family's copy of the contract? I asked Maid Suki to find the copy my family has so we can both look at it." I said, "Well, well, well... I was waiting for this day. I actually have my family's copy right here, I just really haven't read it since I was waiting for this day." That caught me by surprise. "Seeing you and your friends showed me that you've grown, and that this day was long awaited. I'll read through this now and I'll get back to you, okay Half Pint?" I chuckled before agreeing and hanging up. "Hiroshi would look into it." I informed the twins. "I'm glad you're doing this, Yui. Your future is important, and you deserve a happy one." Ryuto... Thank you... Rise smiled, "And now that we got that out of the way, I'll await the day that you choose." I nodded as we went back to walking me home. The moment I got home, I kissed both of them on the cheeks and went straight omy room to fall asleep. Standing my ground was surprisingly tiring, heh.

I went to Samegawa to fish for a bit for that guy who's afraid of cats. Nothing much happened, but I did get a fish on my first time fishing so that's a plus. It looked like a red goldfish... Shouldn't it just be called a redfish?

The girls invited me to a shopping spree as they brought Kanji and Ryuto along to be bag carriers. "Why here...? I thought we were gonna celebrate saving Naoto..." I mean, I can have that sorted easily. "Yeah! We're gonna celebrate with a shopping spree! And you have the honor of carrying our bags." Ryuto sighed, "You know I hate carrying your bags..." But Rise ignored him. "Senpai... I need to save." Kanji looked at me as I sighed. You're not getting past them, you two. "If it makes you two feel better, I'll carry my bags." I said as thy both sighed. "Attathere, Yui~Chan." Chie cheered, "I'm going to buy a lot today." "Me too! I've got money to burn!" Yukiko and Rise squealed respectively. "Alright, alright... Tch... I should've told 'em I had to watch the house, like Yosuke~Senpai..." "I should've said I was helping out grandma..." I feel bad for those two...

When I made it home, Dojima was on the couch and looked like he was waiting for me. "You know, I just looked outside. Let's go for a walk in a bit. There's somewhere I want to go with you and Nanako, especially since Nanako's birthday is coming up and I'm working overtime so I can get her a cake and present. Don't worry, she knows and I'll be back before night time. If you could, just keep the small party with us three? I just want it to be nice and small. Oh, and... Here, have this." He then handed me the mug he made coffee for me in when he brought over cake. "That's Nanako's mother's-- I mean, Chisato's mug. When you were born, she was really fond of you. From now on, that will be your mug. I'm sure she would want you to use it." Dojima... "Thank you... Thank you so much!" I smiled as he chuckled. "No problem. Take good care of it. We're family. So, I'll fill your and Nanako's mugs anytime... Don't forget that, Yui." I... I do have a family... "Ready, Dad?" Nanako called, "Yeah, let's go.". The little girl cheered and grasped onto my hand, "Let's go, big sis!" As we walked out of the house and towards the floodplain.
When we got there, Nanako rushed to the water. "It's scary at night! But it's fun with you and big sis!" Her father laughed, "Don't fall in.". "Hey, don't get me wrong, but why are we out here?" I questioned, "Well, this little one has been saying all this time how you wanted to come here, right? Let's come again on a nicer day. We can have a picnic." Nanako cheered and I smiled. The little girl asked if she could be closer to the water as Dojima allowed her. "That look on her face... I haven't seen it in a long time. Yui, I'm going to keep up my search for the criminal who ran over Chisato. But this time, it's not to escape from anything. I'm just doing it because... I'm a detective. Seems I forgot something as basic as that. You made me remember what's important to me. I owe you for that. This town is my town. It's the place where you and Nanako live. That's why I'm gonna live on, protecting this place. As a detective... as a father for Nanako and you." A smile grew on his face... he called me his daughter... I don't think I've ever been this happy in my life.

We heard from above, "What the? Hey, he's... You there! What's wrong!?" A police officer walked down the stairs at Dojima's request. "Detective Dojima...? I-I'm sorry to bother you while you're off duty..." The officer apologized, only to have Dojima ask him what's wrong and who the people they were chasing were. "Oh, it's that group of juvie thieves. You know, the one that's been the talk of the town..." There were thieves? I guess I should pay attention to my surroundings. "Thieves!? Those punks..." Dojima grunted as Nanako walked up to us, "Dad, are you going?" He looked at me as I winked, as a form of approval. "Yeah... Arresting the bad guys is my... I mean, your father's job. Yui, take care of Nanako." "Heh, go get 'em, Dad!" I said while putting out a thumbs out. He smiled back before turning to the stairs. "Don't you know who I am? I need to get the bath ready... Oh, and let's make a late night snack! I'm hungry." Nanako yawned as we walked back home.
