Chapter 56 ~ Back to School

9/1

My alarm started blaring, it's the first day back at school. Normally I wouldn't be so excited to go to school, but I need to distract myself for a bit. Reluctantly, I went into the bathroom and took a bath and washed my hair in the process. Once I was back in my room to change into my uniform, I noticed the music box Yosuke got me on my desk. I put everything else on my shelf I got yesterday but it didn't look good on the shelf with them so I put it here... Should I put on the necklace Yosuke got me? Before I could answer that, I made my way to it and put it on before I got dressed and made my way to school. The summer sun was still as bright as always, making me glad that I didn't have dark hair. My head would've sweated out all the product I put in my hair. It didn't take long to get to the school, but it does feel weird after being away from this place for quite a while. "Mornin' Yui!" Huh? Oh, it's Chie and Yukiko. "Good morning you two!" I smiled at them while Chie yawned, "Summer vacation's over already.". Yosuke came up to us with his bike while I tried hiding behind Chie. This is gonna be hard... "Yo, guys. I got lost on my way here." How is that possible? "The vacation was pretty long." I don't think that's an excuse, Yukiko. Chie shared my sentiment also, making me giggle.

The four of us walked closer to the gate as we saw someone familiar. "Good morning." It was Shirogane, and he was... wearing our uniform? "Y-You...!? You're that, uh... pint-size detective!" Uh, he has a name, Yosuke. Shirogane looked at Yosuke with an offended expression, "I beg your pardon!? My name is Naoto. Please, don't give people bizarre nicknames you make up on the spot." I agree, that was rude of him. "Um... You know this is a high school, right?" And I think he knows that too, Yukiko... "My cooperation with the police has come to an end. However, there are aspects of the case with which I remain unconvinced. There are some family-related issues as well, so I've decided to stay here for the present. From today forth, I'll be a first-year at your high school. And I felt that I should at least introduce myself to you all. I trust our relations will be cordial, Senpai." So he's a first year, good to know. Not gonna lie, now that I've got a better look at him, he is kinda cute. Nothing to it, he's just cute. "Well, I better go. Farewell." Shirogane bowed before walking away into the building. That was interesting, to say the least.

~Timeskip~

It was PE... this is not what I wanna do one the first day back... "So they got the guy over summer break! I was sad to know that he was a student I once taught. You've gotta watch out for unjustified resentment, guys! I'm sure you know what I mean; you all watch gossip shows! You never know who has a grudge against you. My advice? Train your body regularly, so you can fight back! Okay... Let's play soccer today! But first! Pop quiz! Yui~Chan! When was soccer first introduced in the Olympics?" Soccer? I'm pretty sure it was, "1900." Mr. Kondo gave me an affirmative nod, "That's right! Good job! So let's get kickin'! Split into two teams! And don't hurt yourselves, guys! Remember, the school trip is only a week away!". School trip? Oh crap, I forgot about that! I wonder where we're going for it?

~Timeskip~

The school just finished and us the second years were waiting for the three first years at the shoe boxes. "Man, school's as dull as ever." I mean, it's still tolerable at least. King Moron isn't here but that's not much with Kashiwagi... "With the case closed, the days feel so empty all of a sudden..." I guess so... "C'mon Yosuke, everything went back to normal. It's a good thing!" I agree with Chie on this, nothing wrong with things finally winding down. And if we do get bored, we can go back into the TV world and fight Shadows. "I didn't mean it that way. It's just..." He stopped himself by looking down. He misses the thrill of it all, doesn't he? It's not surprising that he does, I kinda do as well. "Hey, we're stopping by Junes later, right? Why don't we ask Naoto-kun to join us? Oh, I just thought... Since he doesn't know anyone yet, he must feel lonely..." That's a good idea, Yukiko. I'm also pretty sure we're the only ones he knows here too. "Didn't he say he came here to help out with the murder case? With the case closed, he's just an ordinary guy now. And if you think about it, that makes him a transfer student... just like us." Mhm, true.

Rise and Ryuto walked up to us and greeted us. I greeted them back but the others didn't realize the two were there. "Maybe he transferred here out of plain stubbornness. 'Cause he doesn't seem like he's only in it for fun. Alright, let's see if he wants to hang out with us." Rise looked totally lost, so I whispered to her that we were talking about Shirogane. Ryuto on the other hand had his earphones in and wasn't paying attention to the conversation. "Two celebrities along with an heir to a family coming to school is already a surprise, but a detective is even rarer. I'm a little curious to see what his family's like, too." The six of us went looking around for Shirogane, but it didn't take too long to find him. He was just down the hall with two girls. He also looked a little uncomfortable with the attention he's getting. "You dunno the area yet, right? C'mon, we'll show you around." "There's probably tons of places to hang out that only we'd know about." Wow, they're not subtle in the slightest. "That won't be necessary. I'm not interested in 'hanging out,' and neither am I interested in you two." Dang, he shot them down so quickly. "Huh? Hey, what did you say!?" "What's with that attitude!? We're just trying to be friendly!" 'Friendly', huh? Yeah right.

Yosuke stepped forward, "Yo, Naoto~Kun. How's it going?" getting Shirogane's attention along with the girls. They now look hesitant to keep talking to him. "H-Hey guys. 'Sup?" Kanji came out of nowhere while sneaking a glance at the boy with the hat. Aww, Kanji might have a small crush on Shirogane! "Uh, well, we'll be going now..." And with that, the two girls left, leaving the seven of us in the hall. Shirogane bowed, "So we meet again. May I help you?" "You wanna hang with us, Shirogane? If you're not busy, that is." I said while holding my bag in front of me. "Hang with... You mean me? Um, perhaps another time. I have some things to mull over." 'Mull over'? Rise wondered the same thing, "I must go straight home today. I promised my Grampa so." Ah, okay. "Heh, okay! Next time then! Anyway, see ya later, Shirogane! C'mon guys, Ted's probably gonna cry if we don't make it to Junes soon." I say as we all left. I did give Shirogane a small wave while also noticing Kanji sneaking one last glance at Shirogane with a small blush growing on his face. Heh, he's adorable.

Once we made it to Junes, I ordered myself a few sticks of dango as they were talking about Shirogane. "Man, did you see Naoto's attitude...? He sure blew his debut at school... Is he gonna be okay at Yasogami?" Well I doubt he wanted to get hit on on his first day so I don't blame him. And if he isn't, we'll be there to save him. "He is different, but he has this... mysterious air around him that draws your attention." Yukiko mentioned, "Yeah, he does. He also has one of those aristocratic faces without being one." I agreed as Yosuke looked down. "Whoa, Yukiko, Kitty, I never knew... You two like younger guys?" Ryuto teased as I took one of my dangos off the stick and flicked it at his face. Sadly though, he caught it and ate it while I pouted. My gaze shifted to Kanji looking at his fidgeting hands. I should ask him if he actually likes Shirogane and give him some advice. "Naoto-kun said he has 'things to mull over,' but he's gotta be talking about the murder case." Either that or something that's none of our business. Yosuke stole one of my dango sticks, "He's some ace detective, right? I bet he's not satisfied... even though the case is closed." he said while stuffing his face with a smirk. The utter betrayal... stealing my food while smirking... how could you, Yosuke?

Chie sighed, "This place isn't our 'special headquarters' anymore... Eh, let's talk about something else." 'Special headquarters', maybe not anymore. But this can be our hangout spot. "Isn't the class trip coming up soon? Um... Where are we going...?" Oh yeah, the school trip! "Tatsumi Port Island. I heard it's an artificial island that faces the ocean. It's a pretty big city." Wait, Tatsumi Port Island? Isn't that the place the Kirijo Group owns? I've been there a few times since the Kirijo Group and Narukami Family are on good terms. I haven't been there in a while though, but that's because the previous leader passed away less than two years ago and the current leader has been busy. "Huh? Port Island? I did tons of shoots there. It's just beyond the Moonlight Bridge, yeah? Should be lots of places to hang out there." Rise piped up, "Oh yeah, it's been a while since we've been there. Wasn't the last time we were there, there was that power outage in the mall?" Her twin asked as she nodded.

Chie groaned, "Uh, actually... we may not have any time to goof off during this trip. I heard the school board is changing the trip's schedule this year. The idea is, we're gonna visit a private school there. Like, to have local and urban students interact or something. It'll be all about studying and serious business... Yuck." Oh god... aren't these things supposed to be fun? "Ugh... They're totally missing the point of a class trip." Yep... "What kinda place is this private school?" Yosuke questioned as Chie answered, " I heard it's really good. They have nice buildings and everything. But it's closed on the day we're going there, so they're going the extra mile to make this work. They want us to tour some factories on the second day, and then we're coming back on the third day." Huh? What makes this a 'school trip'? "That's not different from a social studies field trip! Urgh... I didn't want to know that..." The light brunette fake sobbed as I rubbed his back. I know the pain, Yosuke... "Can't expect much from a school-sponsored trip, I guess. Well, we'll be around. So if it starts to drag, we can ditch." Good point, Kanji. And if we get caught, I could always bribe. "Rise and I can show you guys around, if you want." "Of course we're gonna show our Senpai around, Ryu!" Rise slapped the back of Ryuto's head, making us all giggle a little.

Yosuke popped up, as if he's realizing something. "But wait... aren't we in different years?" Crap... I keep forgetting we're in different years... "Oh, didn't you know? The excursion will be like the campout. They're going to combine the first and second years. Since student enrollment is down and they're low on funds, they've cut the excursion back to once every two years." Yukiko said, making Yosuke and I sigh in relief. Our underclassman rejoiced at that fact while I munched on my last dango stick... aww... "I wish I could be that positive about it... Doesn't this seem like a pain in the ass to anyone else?" Maybe, but we get to spend time with each other more. "Some people were against the proposition, but it's been decided. Oh, and guess who's idea it was? King Moron's. It's just the kind of thing he'd come up with..." Ugh, King Moron... "Nooo... King Moron...! Why must you torture us from beyond the grave...!?" Heh, Yosuke and his overreaction.

I patted his head while Teddie walked up to us, "Noooo... King Moron...!" Wait, did he know King Moron before he died? "You don't even know who that is." Thanks for answering my question, Kanji. "Hey, tell me more about this trip. Where is Port Island? What's there?" Teddie pestered us with his questions, making Yosuke even more irritated. "Well, even though the class trip is coming up, it's still a ways away. What should I do until then...?" The tomboy wondered while the bear walked up to me as I patted his head. He's still cute, heh. "Well, it's not like we got much to do here in the first place... Man is just an animal trying to figure out how to kill time through his days..." Was he trying to be philosophical? "Huh. You made yourself sound like you were being philosophical... yet it made absolutely no sense." Chie's words cut Kanji in half, making me and Yukiko try to hold back laughter.

After a little while, Ryuto asked if he could walk me home. I agreed, much to Yosuke's dismay. The two of us were on the bus, looking outside the window to the countryside. "So, how're things?" He asked as my mind went back to my complicated love life, making me blush red. "Heh, it's love problems, isn't it?" My blush only grew darker while he intertwined his fingers with mine. He knows me so well... "Yui..." His hand placed itself on my face, making us stare into each other's eyes. Thankfully, no one was on the bus. Otherwise this would've been the most awkward thing ever. "Ryu~Chan..." I muttered as he came closer to my face. I was just in shock, I didn't move. I actually expected him to kiss me. However, "You're so cute..." I heard him say. I opened my eyes to see that he backed off a little and had a smirk on his face. My brain put two and two together, "You jerk! Making me red, pulling this... you... you stupid head!". With a pout, I turned my head opposite of Ryuto as I heard him laugh.

"Sorry, Kitty. I couldn't resist, I haven't flirted with you in a while." The heat from my cheeks didn't leave as I felt arms wrapping around my torso. I could feel his face fall into my hair, his warm breath hitting the base of my neck. "Kitty..." Him calling by my nickname in that tone of voice sent shivers down my spine. "I once said that I'm not giving up on you. And I have every intention to make you mine, that is if you still have feelings for me." Ryuto... My body relaxed in his embrace. I still don't know my feelings, but at least I know one thing with Ryuto. I feel safe with him around.

Eventually, the bus stopped at the bus stop near my house. We stepped out of the bus while he walked me to my house before kissing my hand and leaving. Heh, he really is something... I stepped into the house, Nanako welcoming me, as I walked up the stairs and went to sleep.

Ryuto's POV

Who would've thought my manipulation tactics would work on her? Sigh, I'm sorry Yui but... I know who you should end up with. And I've got a plan for this to become reality. I care about her, and I only want the best for her...

Yui's POV

School was as boring as ever. It was raining too so that didn't help out. Sigh, the others also left early to avoid the rain while I had to stay back and help Kashiwagi with papers... And for the second time, I forgot my umbrella. As I walked down the stairs, I noticed Shirogane in the hallway so I walked up to him. "Oh... 'Senpai'. Do you want something from me?" He asks, "I just wanted to say hi!" I responded as he went 'oh'. I looked out to the rain and pouted, I can't believe I forgot my umbrella, again. "You don't have your umbrella?" Shirogane asks only for me to shyly nod at him, "Where you headed?" "Junes, I told my friends to go ahead of me but I didn't think it would rain..." I scratched the back of my head as he looked at his watch. "I can walk you there if you want. I have enough time." Huh? Did he offer to walk me there? "Um, if you're fine with it. Sure! Let's go!" I smiled as he pulled out his umbrella and opened it. It's a pretty big umbrella for one person, I thought it would've been smaller.

We walked in silence to Junes under his umbrella. I would say that it was awkward, but it really wasn't. I enjoyed his company, even if he wasn't talking. But, I did wanna start a conversation with him. "So, how's being a detective? Is it fulfilling for you or..." I asked, "It depends. If I'm solving the case by myself, it is. But I won't deny that it's a bit lonely." Huh, interesting. "Let me ask you something, Yui~Senpai. How is being an heir to a high class family?" I looked down at his question. "It depends, also. I love everyone there, the maids, the security guards, the driver, everyone. But it does kinda get a bit lonely." I could feel a hand being planted on my head, it was Shirogane's. What's up with everyone putting their hands on my head? Not that I mind, but still. "Guess we are similar, huh?" My face flushed pink and shyly nodded before we went back to walking.

It didn't take too long to get to Junes, "Thank you, Shirogane. How could I thank you?" I quizzed as he started pondering. "How about just smiling? You've got a nice one." I could feel my face heating up, but I did give him a genuine smile. His eyes went wide for a second but he turned around and waved goodbye. With that, I went up to the food court where the others were. "Hey, Yui!" Ryuto greeted me as I told them that we were going into the TV. The killer might've been caught, but there's no harm going into the TV World every now and then. Rise told us that there was a powerful Shadow at Kubo's dungeon so we all went there. Since it wasn't any of our dungeons, I didn't feel the need to ask them if they were comfortable to go there. Once we were at the top we saw... a megazord? I don't understand... Yosuke and Teddie were really good against this fight with their wind and ice skills respectively while Yukiko kept their health up, Chie and I on buffing and debuffing and Kanji coming in with some electricity skills. When we were done, I moved towards the bone pile that was behind the Shadow and saw a sword that had blue flowers engraved on the handle. It was beautiful.

"My other self..."

Izanagi? What's up?

"That sword... I sense great power from it. It reminds me of us..."

Of... us?

"Yes... take it. It is a strong and powerful weapon to have."

Flashes of those visions Kubo's Shadows showed me tainted my mind. Without hesitation, I stuck my old sword into the ground. My hand lingered on the handle for a few seconds before I left with the new sword. The memories of that vision Shadow Kubo showed me, I leave them here.

We left the video game castle and went back to the main hub. Hmm, I'm gonna see if I can fuse the Persona Margaret wants. Stepping into the Velvet Room, the lady in question welcomes me as I asked Igor to fuse Personas for me til eventually I was able to make a Black Frost with Auto-Sukukaja. "Ah! You have brought Black Frost, and he has Auto-Sukukaja... You have successfully completed the quest. Do you know this Persona's tragic past? Black Frost lived alone for over thousands of years... While enduring this solitude, he prayed to the sky, over and over. Pleading, 'Give me a friend'... Eventually, the god he served granted him a friend for a single day... And the two of them frolicked through the fields, as happy as could be. They spent many precious hours together... And then... The sun set. The friend vanished... Black Frost regretted his request. If he had known he would have been left sad and lonely, he would never have asked for a friend in the first place. Hence, Block Fro... I didn't mispronounce it... Forget it. I made it all up anyway. Did you believe me? Adults shouldn't be so easily swayed by what others say. Anyhow, I appreciate that you showed me this wonderful card. One after another, you make my every wish come true... What a mature, young lady. Hmhm...".

I don't know if she's teasing me or being literal, but she did make me blush a little. Margaret noticed my face tinted with pink and giggled a little before speaking again, "Well then... For my next request... Show me a Yatagarasu equipped with the Megido skill... If anyone can do this for me, it's you. I eagerly await your return.". Afterwards, I left the Velvet Room and we all left the TV World. Yosuke this time was adamant on walking me home so he did. It didn't take long, like usual, and we were about to say our goodbyes. "So... Yui..." He started as I turned my attention to him. His face was bright pink and seeing that made me hold back a giggle. "Oh uh... I was wondering if... if we get time to ditch the boring stuff on the school trip, do you wanna like... hang out? J-Just the two of us...?" I-Is he- "L-Like a date...?" Now it was me with a bright pink face while I waited for his answer. "N-No! Just- wait... y-yeah! I'm asking you out on a date, Yui!" Yosuke stuttered as I stood there, stunned. After a while though, I looked straight at him, blushing and all, with a big smile on my face. "Yes, I would love to go on a date with you, Yosuke!" I say without hesitation while it was his turn to be dumbfounded. With a giggle, I leaned forward and kissed his cheek. "Heh! See you tomorrow, partner!" And with that, I went inside of the house.

Once the door closed, my embarrassment came flooding in as my back leaned on the door and I slid down. 'Why did I do that!?' was what filled my mind. Gah! He must think I'm way too forward, what if that affected our friendship!? I don't wanna make things awkward between us... but, he was the one who asked me out... yeah, I shouldn't think much about it since he was the one who asked me out. Eventually, I stood up and placed those thoughts in the back of my mind while I took off my shoes. In the living room area was Dojima reading a newspaper and heard the sound of water running from upstairs. "Hey Yui." Dojima welcomed me as seeing him reading a newspaper made me remember that he was looking for a newspaper article a while ago.

I asked him about it, "The newspaper article...? Ohh... Yeah, I found it. Were you worried about it? It's about Chisato... my wife. When she was killed by a hit-and-run... I told you before, right? About the case where we never had a suspect? Get it now...? There's nothing more I can say about it in this house. Let's stop there." He responded with a look saying that he wants to tell me, but can't. I smirked, "Then let's go outside!" He was taken aback by my response but he eventually chuckled. "...Hah. You win... She... Nanako's mother was run over on her way to pick up Nanako from nursery school. It was a cold day, and there were no witnesses, so they didn't find her until much later. Until they got word to me, Nanako was waiting all that time at the nursery... All alone. Waiting for a mother who would never come... I couldn't tell Nanako that her mother was killed. That her father, whose job is to catch criminals... couldn't find a single lead... But I haven't given up. I'll catch the guy. I don't need a private life to do that. ...Nanako will understand." Dojima... "Is this what she wants?" I asked, looking at him seriously. He bit his lip, "Even if it's not what she wants now, she'll understand someday... I have to tell myself that... Sorry... leave me alone for now... Yui. Thanks." Dojima gave me a sad smile as I went upstairs. I really want to help this family... my family...
