Chapter 33 ~ Days Before the School Camp Out

Another long chapter, and we're closing in on one of the best Persona 4 memes. I can't wait, I hope you enjoy this!

6/10

"Hey! Yo!" I turn to see a familiar tomboy's face as I smile. "Who do you think'll show up on the Midnight Channel next? I heard it's going to rain this evening, but it's not going to last all night. Hey, have you been trying to solve the case on your own in your spare time? I know, I should be thinking about it, too. But that kind of stuff just isn't my speciality. How about you?" I guess I'm good at reasoning, I've read lots of graphic novels and I figured out who the hidden bad guy is, like... four or five chapters before the great reveal? Though I don't know if you could call that a skill or just the writers being obvious about it. Though I won't worry her, "I'm good at reasoning". "I'm jealous. Well, everyone has strengths and weaknesses. I'll stick to kicking things. So let's prepare ourselves! Times like this are perfect for working out!" Both of us giggle before walking into the school.

~Timeskip~

Lunchtime hit as Yosuke handed the four of us instant noodles that he brought from Junes along with a giant thermos with boiling water in it so we could prepare the noodles. It didn't take long for them to be ready and eating them was a new experience. I never had instant noodles before today, why must I live a sheltered life?! "Oooh, the instant noodles really hit the spot..." I agree to an extent, though I blame my upbringing. "You know, the rainy season's just about here." Welp, goodbye sleep schedule. "Once it starts, it'll be raining every night. We'll have to keep a constant eye on the Midnight Channel." Can we take shifts if that happens? Not that I'm lazy, it's just if we all look like zombies in the day, we can get caught.

"Crap, I didn't even think of that... Well, so it goes. Hehe, I thought you were worried about the rain 'cause of the school camp out." Oh yeah, I forgot we have that. I should tell Nanako about that, Dojima should already know so I don't have to worry about him. "Why are you so excited about that?" Because it's a camp out, I haven't actually gone camping so I'm excited too. "That's right, it's the first time for you two..." Wait, Yosuke's too? Oh wait, I forgot he's also a transfer student. "You realize the only purpose of the school camp out is to 'develop a love for one's hometown in young people,' right?" Why do I feel like this is a bad thing? "Yeah, they tell us that up front. So?" "Well you see, the way we supposedly develop that love is by picking up trash off the mountain." So that's the catch... dang it! "P-Picking up trash? "Develop a love" my ass! That's slave labor!" Is this why my parents made sure I couldn't go on school organised events like the school trips?

"Well, the night's kinda fun. We cook our own meals with mess kits and sleep in tents." In tents? Crap, I'm gonna be out of my element, aren't I? "The four of us are in the same group." At least I won't be alone... The only boy in our group of four stood up, "The same group, huh...? Does that mean we sleep together at night, too!?" I didn't give him any warning as I stood up and slapped the back of his head. The school's not that dumb, "Oww..." Well, what did you expect? "Good shot, Yui. But yeah, guys and girls sleep in different tents." Chie slurped her noodles after chuckling. "I'm warning ya... If you leave your tent at night, you'll be expelled on the spot." Looks like Yosuke can't even try that stunt, hah! "Ugh... This gets worse and worse. I thought it was gonna be fun..." Don't worry, it will be fun with all of us there. "It's only for one night and we disband before noon the next day. It doesn't last very long." Yukiko drank what was left in her bowl before speaking. "Oh... We did have some fun at the river before going home last year." A river? "Do they let you go swimming?" "I think so? There's always someone who takes a dip, although we didn't." Huh, I can take my new swimsuit for a spin then. "I see... So you can swim in the river..." I know that look... Yosuke's plotting something, isn't he?

~Timeskip~

After school it was still pouring and I didn't bring an umbrella. I'm an idiot... "You okay?" I heard from next to me as I saw an oddly familiar boy. It wasn't anyone I met here in Inaba, at least I think. "Y-Yeah, I just didn't bring my umbrella..." I told him as he handed me his, "Take this, I have a raincoat anyway." He was right, he was indeed wearing a raincoat. "B-But I can't just take your umbrella!" "You can give it back to me on a sunny day, so don't worry, Yui." I gasped when hearing my name. How does he know my name? I asked him that, "You don't remember me, Yui? It's me, Ryuto." R-Ryuto? Now that I look at him, the more I see Ryuto in him. "Ryuto!" I hugged him as he hugged me back. Ryuto is Rise's twin brother and an old friend of mine. I'm so happy to see him! Wait a second, "How're you here? I thought you were still 'Ryu~Bo' on TV?" He laughed, "Yeah like, a year ago. Haven't you caught up?". I then felt like an idiot, I hadn't seen the news before I came to Inaba... "It's good to see you, Ryuto! Are you still in contact with Rise?" I asked as he nodded. "Where are you heading? I'm heading to my grandmothers in the shopping district," The boy asks as I thought for a bit, "Aiya, I wanna take their Rainy Day Challenge.". "Then let's go together, wanna share an umbrella?" I giggled while I nodded as we made our way to the shopping district.

We talked about random things while we walked. I learnt that he moved in with his grandmother a year ago after he left show-biz life last year and is now a first year at Yasogami. Even though he's younger than me, he's still taller than me. Is this gonna be a thing where my underclassmen are shorter than me? I then told him why I'm here and not back home and he was shocked to hear that we both had family members living in the same town. We eventually made it to Aiya, "It was fun catching up with you, Yui." I smiled, "Same here, Ryuto! We should hang out more!" A faint blush grew on his face as he rubbed the back of his neck. "Y-Yeah... let's exchange contact information!" He suggested as we did before parting ways. Just knowing he's here... it warms my heart...

I stepped into Aiya and ordered the Rainy Day Challenge. As I waited, I started to think about Ryuto. He's changed a lot... he's even cuter than he was three or four years ago... GAH! Stop thinking about that, Yui! You are over him, you stopped having a crush on him when he and Rise stopped visiting you. He's just a good friend and most likely has a girlfriend... Nakamura handed me my order and I started eating immediately. Still haven't finished it but it's good enough. I returned home with a slight food coma as I saw Nanako pacing around the place happily. "Big sis! Guess what, guess what, guess what!?" She jumped towards me, really excited. "What is it?" "Dad's coming home now! I need to get dinner ready, can you help me big sis?" She asked as I immediately nodded. She's too cute to say no to. The little girl squealed and ran to the fridge, her giant smile falling into a frown. "What's wrong Nanako?" I asked, "We're out of pickled radish... Dad'll be disappointed.". I checked the time and saw that it was almost 7:10pm. I mean, I have a 9pm curfew, I don't think we'll be that long. "Let's go to Junes and get some!" I suggested as her face lit up again. "Really? Thanks, big sis!! Hehehe! We're going shopping together!"

Rank 3

We got ready before heading out to Junes. Getting the pickled radish took a little time but we were able to find it easily. The bus was also delayed by a few minutes but we're fine... right? When we got off the bus, I checked my time and felt my stomach sink... it was 10pm... please say he's isn't home yet, please say he's not home yet... Nanako opened the door as I saw his shoes... crap... "I'm back! Dad! Welcome home!" She called out while taking off her shoes. I stepped into the house and saw Dojima sitting on the couch, obviously mad. I'm in trouble...

"Where did you go at this time of night?" Dojima scowled, "Oh, uhh... Junes..." The little girl looked down. "Didn't I tell you not to go outside this late? And you, didn't I give you a curfew of 9pm? I said I wanted to give you more freedom since you've shown your maturity, but I didn't mean THIS amount of freedom!" He yelled at me as I looked down along with Nanako. "B-But, you were coming home... so I..." She started tearing up. "No matter what your reason was, rules are rules. You promised me, remember? I can't let two girls, one six year old and one sixteen year old, out on the streets at night time!" I saw small tears falling from Nanako's eyes, I can't let this go. "It's not Nanako's fault! It's mine, I made the decision to go to Junes! I'm so sorry!" I bowed apologetically, "Big sis...". The little girl wiped away her tears, "...It's not my fault? Then why is Dad angry...? Why won't he listen...? Dad's stupid...! Stupid, stupid!" She then ran up the stairs to her room.

"Nanako! How dare you call your father stupid!!" I stopped him and explained the situation and why we were late to begin with, from us trying to find the pickled radish to the bus being delayed. "Pickled radish... for me...?... Is that so... But I still can't allow kids to be walking around this late at night. You know how dangerous it's been lately. You shouldn't be wandering around out there at night either! I don't care if the bus was delayed or not!" He yelled, "Your curfew is now 7pm, no later. I'm also gonna give you chores that I expect you to follow. Wash the dishes, tidy up the place before bed, take out the trash. I expect you to do those things for two weeks." I nodded before going upstairs. I checked up on Nanako to see if she was alright, only to see her in her futon crying. I sat next to her as she moved her head onto my lap. I rubbed her head while she cried onto my leg. It took a while but she calmed down and went to sleep. I took this chance to carefully move her head back to her pillow, kissed her forehead and left the room.

I ran into Ryuto again this morning as we walked to school, talking about more random things. It was easy to talk to him, it pays to know a former celebrity as an old friend. Though I did have to fight a couple of glares my way too.

~Timeskip~

Ai was busy with trying to set up the game, a task that would have to wait because of the camping trip, so I looked after the basketball team. Kou spent more time on the bleachers talking to me as I tried to put in a good word for Ai. When I got home, Nanako told me I had a delivery. It was a package from one of the maids from home. They sent my second pair of loafers along with my viola and new clothes the family stylist made. At least I didn't have to use the school's viola now. I turned to see that the little girl was still kinda upset from last night so I spent time with her until I saw a smile on her face. When she fell asleep, I tucked her in and did my chores before bed.

6/12

I got a call from Yukiko and she asked if I could hang out with her as I accepted. We met Samegawa and handed me a bento box. " It came out well, so I packed it up. Try it out." Oh yeah, I agreed to help her by taste-testing her food. I opened the box as a pungent smell came from it. What the heck did she put in here? I took the chopsticks she provided for me and took a piece of what I think is an omelet? It had a soft exterior but the more I chewed, I felt something hard in the middle. It smells too, somehow both burnt and raw. I knew one thing for sure, this is inedible. But how do I say this to Yukiko? I swallowed it, twitching from the after taste. The black haired girl noticed this and frowned, "...You're not about to tell me how delicious that was, are you?" "There's always next time...?". Hearing that made her a little relieved.

"What are you doing?"

A familiar voice spoke as we turned and saw Nanako. She must be on her way to a friend's house or shopping. "Ah, Nanako-chan... Well, I was just having her try my boxed lunch..." "Ooh, I want some." No Nanako, no. You are not having... whatever this is. "I-I'm sorry, but I can't give you any. It's not good..." Thank you, Yukiko! "Oh. If you make a good one, will you let me have some?" Why do I have a feeling that that's not gonna happen? "Huh...? S-Sure, if you want..." "Yay! I'm rooting for you!" Nanako's cheer made the girl dressed in red happy and she thanked the child. "Okay! I need to go now, I'm doing the grocery shopping!" Then the little girl left, skipping her way to Junes. "Umm... I'm sorry to drag you around..." I chuckled, "It's fine Yukiko! I'm having fun!" She smiled at my words and thanked me.

"Only about a year left, huh...? I need to be able to do anything on my own by then..." The girl thought out loud before taking the bento box. I decided to walk her home before making my way home. Once I got home, I saw Nanako home and a fridge stocked with food. After looking at what we had, I decided to make potato salad for Nanako and I as Dojima wasn't here. After boiling the potatoes, I immediately smashed them while hot before adding ham, onions and other ingredients, making a tasty potato salad. After splitting it between two and putting them in the fridge, I immediately did the dishes and tidied up the whole downstairs. It was easier this time around since it was still tidy from last night.

Today is the day we're allowed to wear our summer uniforms, they were more comfier than our winter ones. Not only that, but stylish too. I also changed my hairstyle from a low side ponytail to a high ponytail. I had to maneuver the strands of hair that circled around the crown of my head but I was able to make it work. I changed my socks to a pair of black translucent thigh highs along with my shoes to the brown loafers the maids sent over.

~Timeskip~

Lunchtime came around as I invited Yukiko to eat with me. Maybe it would help her out. She took a bite of it and squealed in happiness, "Oh, it's really good! Did you make this on your own, Yui~Chan? The flavor is excellent, and the presentation is great, too... Do you want to work as a chef at our place? I'm just kidding!" Seeing her enjoy my food made me happy.

~Timeskip~

"Good afternooooon! Are you all awake today? June in Japan can be pretty tiring, thanks to all the humidity and heat! But don't waste your days away with laziness! Summer is very near, my friends! You wouldn't want that special someone to see you being lazy, would you? So today, let's do 30 reps of the 100 meter dash! Running keeps the body and mind from rotting away! ...What's with that sourpuss face, Yui? Do you want it to freeze like that? Okay, okay, how 'bout this? If you get this question right, I'll cut it down to five! What kind of exercise is a sprint classified as?" He'll cut it down to five!? I need to get this right. Hmmm... aerobics are things like stretches, right? Then, "Anaerobics?" I guessed, hoping it was the right answer. Ugh...! So you knew! I didn't think you were that informed about athletics, Yui! Well, a promise is a promise! I'll make it five instead of 30! But I only promised Yui! Hahaha! Everyone else, you have ten reps, got it!? Get ready!" At least I lowered it for everyone else too.

~Timeskip~

I was walking at Samegawa when I saw that kid who asked for a sticker sitting on the ground again. I walked up to him, "Where am I supposed to find a rare kid's sticker? I can't come up with anything..." I took out the sticker Nanako gave me a while back and gave it to him. "...A Tankiriman Sticker? Wow, thank you! This is cool-looking, so I'm sure they'll let me play after I show them this!" The boy then ran off as I chuckled. I hope it works this time. Wait a second, gasp! I forgot, the fox gave me a marudai and I said I'll come back for it. I made my way to the shrine, bowing at the gate, as the fox jumped down and led me back into the shrine. Making double sure, I asked the fox again if I could have the marudai as it nodded its head. I took hold of it, making sure not to break it, I took it home and placed it in my room. I spent the rest of the day using it to start making a kumihimo using the yarn I bought from Kanji's family's textile store. I tied them to tamas that was miraculously in my room and got them set up on the marudai. It was a simple process, though I did need to warm up since it has been a while. Not pulling the yarn, but letting it hang on my fingers, transitioning them to my thumbs and vise versa was harder than it sounds but I got the hang of it. After noticing it was dark, I went downstairs to do my chores before bed.

At lunchtime, Ayane asked if I was going to band practice and I couldn't say no to her so I went. It was lucky that I brought my viola with me today. While we practiced, I heard that Ayane was sounding good and it warmed my heart. After practice, Ayane asked if I could stay behind and I did. "Senpai! I'm going to the river to practice! It's so peaceful there. There's even a little roof nearby, so I can still practice when it's raining. I've been going there everyday, even when we don't have rehearsal. I need all the practice I can get! It may be a lost cause, but... I might as well give it a try! It's all thanks to you, Senpai! If I'd been on my own... I would've given up." She blushed, "Senpai... I... I'll make it a performance to be proud of... for both of us... I want to make you smile." Oh my goodness, she's so sweet!

Rank 6

"Uh... well... I'll be on my way now!" I parted ways with Ayane and headed home. Nanako and I were watching TV after I did my chores as we slowly got bored. "If you want, you can change the channel." Hmm... what can I do to make this not so boring...? Aha! I took an elastic rubber band from one of the cabinets and sat back down. Nanako grew curious as I put the rubber band on my middle and index fingers, while also secretly on my ring and pinky fingers. I told Nanako to pay attention as I opened my slightly closed hand, having the rubber band spring off of my middle and index fingers to my ring and pinky fingers. "I saw it! It went like, zoom! Do it again! One more time!" Nanako seems to be impressed by something I taught myself to do when I was her age when I skipped out on one of my martial arts lessons. I did it again as she only grew more impressed that she wanted to try it herself.

6/15

Mr. Morooka was being obnoxious as always. "School camp will be taking place this weekend. Remember, this isn't like ordinary camping. It's going to be a place of education to wind up the lazy ass minds you get from screwing around all the time. You know, you all depend on other people too much! That's why you jerk-offs have all this spare time! 'Oh, he'll do it someday,' or 'She's doing it for me,' I bet that's all you think about! Let's take a closer look at it, shall we? What's the root of the word 'pend' Hanamura! Stop smiling and answer!" "First of all, how could I be smiling in this class...? And second, this has nothing to do with logic... 'Pend,' eh? Words with 'pend' in them... Uh... I have no clue... Yui, help me out here?" I wrote on a piece of paper the answer before secretly handing it to him. I'm not gonna let him be yelled at by this... dickhead... there I said it. "'To hang'.". Ahh, pretty good, Hanamura... Or should I be praising Narukami? You're right. The root word 'pend' means 'to hang.' Like Hanamura was too tongue-tied to explain, words like 'pendant' and 'pendulum' are good examples! Those girls who got murdered were fooling around and depending on others, and that's what got them killed! Unless you want to end up the same, make sure you don't depend too much on others!" Are you kidding me!? You can't say that! "...That was evil. How could he say that...? ...Thanks, Yui. He'd probably have stabbed me to death with his words if I hadn't 'depended' on you..."

~Timeskip~

I'm so glad school is over now, I don't wanna have to deal with Mr. Morooka after that. What do the students call him? King Moron? I'll start calling him that from now on because he lost what remaining respect I had for him as a teacher. I was walking down Samegawa when I saw that kid again. This time, he ran up to me. "Ma'am! Y'know the sticker you gave me? Everyone already knew about it... But I did make friends! I talked to them every time I got a new sticker, and they just kinda became my friends! It's thanks to you! Oh, and also the fox. I wrote my wish at the shrine. They said a fox grants wishes there. I'll go say thanks to the fox later!" He ran off with a smile that made me smile. I then remembered I needed to bring a crowd to the basketball game Ai was setting up so I first went to the people I knew would turn up if I asked them, Yosuke, Chie, Yukiko and Kanji. I texted them if they could meet me in the entrance of the school as they accepted to meet with me.

I waited for all of them to arrive, "Okay guys, I need you guys' help. Ai, Daisuke and I wanna do something for Kou since he hasn't been feeling the best. I want there to be a crowd at the game Ai is setting up after the school campout and I'm asking you guys to please show your support!" After begging, they all agreed to turn up. Even Kanji who didn't know who Kou, Daisuke and Ai were. Chie said she'll ask other guys to come while Yukiko said she'll ask other girls. Kanji and Yosuke didn't say anything as they said we're their only friends which made it kinda sad. I thanked them as they all went off on their own ways. Who else should I invite? Ah! Ryuto and Nakamura!

I went to the shopping district and into Aiya first. "Nakamura, you here?" "Yo." The girl called from the stove. "We're setting up a basketball game after the camping trip for Kou, would you like to show your support by coming?" I asked, praying she would accept. "I'll make room for it. Tell me what day and I'll ask my dad. Thanks for inviting me, Narukami." And with that, she went back to cooking. I stepped out and called Ryuto. Which proved to be fruitless as I saw him coming out of the tofu place. "Hey Yui, what's up?" I told him what I told the others as he said he would come to help me out. He also said he would bring his friends too which was great news. I thanked him before realising the time and waving goodbye to Ryuto. I texted Ai that I invited people to watch as she sent lots of happy emojis.

Nanako welcomed me home as I went upstairs to make some origami cranes after doing my chores. I got better at the task, this time making double of what I already have. This makes 100 origami cranes in total.

6/16

Yukiko asked if the four of us could go shopping at Junes for ingredients for the school campout as we all agreed. The girls and I were in the grocery department while Yosuke went off somewhere. He had that dumb smirk when he separated with us too which made me worry. I don't know if this is smart, but Yukiko and Chie said that they were making curry, which I was fine with, and wanted to get the ingredients for it so I let them. While they did, I went to get some rice to go along with the curry. You can't go wrong with rice. I went back to the girls and saw what was in the shopping cart. Radishes, potato starch, flour and chilli peppers. Perfectly normal. Until I kept looking. Kimchi, black and white pepper, mint chocolate, mocha and a sea cucumber... what the absolute fuck are these girls doing? The fact they made me swear should make me concerned... Am I gonna do anything about this? I'm actually curious on how this will turn out so no. But I am gonna make sure they don't mess up the rice. If they touch that, they're gonna make it into something nuclear.

"I'm gonna go check up on Yosuke, you guys don't mind paying for all the stuff?" I asked as they nod, allowing me to leave. At the entrance of the grocery department was Yosuke with a brown paper bag. "Yo, where's the others?" Oh, they're just planning on nuking our stomachs. "They're still shopping, where did you go?" He then got jittery and tried to hide the bag but I was quick on my feet and was able to get it away from him. Looking inside, my face looked on in disappointment. I had three pairs of swimsuits, each one being Chie, Yukiko and my favorite colors. "Yosuke... why do you have three pairs of swimsuits?" You can just hear the disappointment in my voice. "I-uh... okay you caught me. I bought you girls swimsuits for when we swim in the river because I knew Chie wouldn't bring hers, Yukiko would probably forget and you... I don't know." Sigh, he just wants to see us in swimsuits. Well, he is a boy. You know what, I was gonna tell him about the girls shopping fiasco but now I'm not. "I'm gonna bring my swimsuit so you don't have to bring the third one." I told him as he jumped for joy.

Once the girls were done, we separated while I went to the food court and got two fried rice cases for Nanako and I before I headed home. Nanako was happy when brought the food. "Hey Nanako, I'm gonna be on a school campout so I'm not gonna be here for a few days. Are you gonna be okay?" I asked, "Of course! Go have fun on your trip!" That night I just spent with Nanako so she wouldn't be too upset when I leave. After putting the little girl to sleep, I quickly did my chores before heading to sleep.
