•Chapter Five•
* It's Saturday and Proto is heading to a small grocery store to buy food for the week *
Proto walked through the sensor activated, auto opening doors to the small relatively shaggy grocery store. The floors were lined with old tile and the walls a shade of dull white. Sparse lights hung on the ceiling and flickered occasionally and the air was cool in places where the air conditioners actually worked. The shelves, however, were well stocked with non expired food and products. Proto glanced at the signs hanging by little chains on the ceiling before picking up a hand basket and beginning his shopping. He found everything with relative ease and kept track in his head of how much he'd spent. Proto was by a wall of canned goods looking at the prices of spaghetti O brands when a young girl with long, neon blue hair, hazel eyes, and a slender build and average height walked in and began her shopping. Proto only glanced over because he noticed how bright the girls hair was, but turned away as he reminded himself to mind his own business. He chose the cheapest spaghetti O's and headed to the cereal section and picked out a box of coco puffs and headed for checkout. The bright hair girl had only came in for a few things and was already in line. Proto got in line and waited patiently as one by one the customers ahead checked out their stuff, paid, and left. While thinking about how nice it would be when he was out in the wilderness he heard the bright haired girl sigh.
" I'm sorry just-just give me a moment to find the rest I need" she said in a slight panic as she scavenged through her bag like a vulture to a corpse. Proto could tell she didn't have enough and pulled out a few coins.
" Mam, take this to help pay" he said to the bright haired girl and extent his hand with the money to her. The girls eyes sparkled with relief.
" T-thank you" she said and paid for her things. Proto smiled, his heart sparking with the joy from helping the girl.
" Of course" he replied as he set his things up to be scanned. The cashier swiftly scanned his items and set them in bags.
" That'll be 2 cyber dollar and 5 cyber cents" the cashier said as they pulled out the receipt and handed it to Proto. Proto paid and picked his bags up and headed for the door where he saw the bright haired girl waiting for him.
"Thanks for helping me... I've never had a stranger be so nice to me" she said and Proto noticed a slight blush on her face.
" No problem, I know how it feels to not be able to pay for what you need and wanted to help" he smiled to the girl. She let out a smile too.
" By the way my names Aonani" she pushed back the hair from her face.
" I'm Proto, it was nice to meet you Aonani".
* The two would talk all the way back to the restaurant's back gate *
" Well I'll see you again some day, right?" Aonani questioned Proto. He nodded.
" Sure! Meet here next Saturday?" He suggested. Aonani shook her head left to right.
" Too long, anytime you could meet sooner?" Proto thought for a moment about his work schedule.
" Yeah, I could meet you here on Monday" Aonani's face lit up.
" Perfect! See you then!" She replied with excitement and practically skipped away. Proto opened the gate and headed to his apartment where he put away his groceries. He yawned widely and decided to take a nap seeing as he had nothing better to do. Trodding over to bed Proto pulled the blanket over himself and laid his head against the soft slightly flat pillow and drifted to sleep.
