Hourai Victim

"This moon is beautiful! It shines so brightly, and there's almost no clouds in the sky!" the horned Hakutaku said as she gazed at the full moon. It was a cool night, with only a slight breeze in the air. The stars shined brightly, illuminating the night sky.

"Hey, why are you sulking? Come outside and sit here! It's nice out here!" she said at a distance. A certain person, immortal to be specific, stood outside the door to her home. Her face wasn't delighted, it was grumpy. She didn't want to go outside. Deep down, she knew that if she stepped foot outside and sat down and watched the moon with the Hakutaku, she wouldn't contain her emotions.

"Hey, why haven't you been talking much to me? I'm your friend!" the Hakutaku said. She stood up and walked towards the sulking girl.

"Mokou, talk to me."

Drip, drop. Tears escaped her eyes and fell down her cheeks. Mokou fell to her knees on the grass and sobbed. "I knew, that if I become too close to you, I would eventually lose you! I won't be able to be with you for long! You're a mortal. You can die. I can't! I'm... I'm immortal! I don't want to get too close to you because I know that I will lose you one day, Keine!"

Keine's heart sunk. Mokou, was an immortal. She was one of them, one of the people who drank the Hourai Elixr. Keine kneeled down to Mokou and wiped her tears. "Don't be afraid of what will happen to me in the future. Just focus on the present, and all will be well"

Keine's voice was soothing, and it calmed Mokou down a slightly. She looked at Mokou's red, tear-stained face, and smiled. "Do you need a hug?" she quietly asked her.

Mokou looked up at Keine, looking somewhat suprised. Her eyes were somewhat watery, and she couldn't see Keine's face right. "I..." She couldn't seem to get the words out of her mouth.

She then realized how much of a crybaby she was being. Mokou wiped her tears and looked down at the ground. Mokou felt embarrassed that she had cried like this. She was supposed to act like a mature person, but now here she is, crying infront of her friend.

Keine made a small smile as she embraced Mokou. "Hey, don't worry. As long as I'm here for now, everything will be fine." She stroked her hair and calmed her.

Mokou's heart beated fast, she didn't know how to react. She slowly hugged Keine back, feeling her hair and Hakutaku horns.

As Keine pulled away, and smiled she said, "Now, do you want to watch the moon with me?"

---

The morning sun rose as the moon sunk, and the sky lit up with sunlight. The birds and incects sang a song as the sun shined on them. Sunlight shined through the bamboo in the forest.

A small sigh could be heard from a certain girl, as she sat in front of a somewhat grave-like stone. She reread a letter, a long one written on a scroll. After she was done, she held it close to her heart, and looked at the stone. Next to it was a newly picked flower, along with other flowers that seemed to be wilting.

"I'll try to bring a flower to you every day from now on, Keine." she said quietly.

The wind blew slightly after she said that, and she smiled. "You know, in all these years I've lived, you impacted me the most. Although it's been almost five hundred years since I last talked to you and touched you physically, I still remember all the things we did together and all the things you said. I remember that one night when I told you that I was immortal, and you comforted me for the rest of the night. Ah, you were kind to me."

Suddenly, tears developed in her eyes as she spoke to the stone. "Time goes by so fast, doesn't it? It feels like it goes by too fast, actually. It seems like yesterday when I first said that I loved you. And now here I am, sitting at your grave, Keine."

Mokou brushed her hair behind her ear and wiped her tears. "Ah, it seems like I'm crying. I'm such a baby. I cry at the simplest things sometimes. I even cried when we..." Mokou stopped her words, but then continued. "When we had our first kiss...ah, that was so embarrassing." she said as she scratched her forehead.

She thought about that moment, that one moment that seemed to change her life. Her life had at seemed to take a complete turn when she first kissed Keine. Mokou thought about it, remembering it all.

In the Bamboo Forest of the Lost, lay a small cottage where Mokou lived. It was a stormy night, and Keine and Mokou sat in front of a fire that Mokou made, and sipped tea. It was a tea that Keine had made, and it tasted delicious. It was made to help ease the brain and calm one's mind.

As Mokou sipped the last of the tea out of the cup, she smiled. "This tastes really good, you know." Keine smiled and looked to the side. "Really? Eh, thanks..." she said nervously.

She was acting weird. Mokou noticed this, and leaned over towards Keine. She rested her head on her shoulder, just to see what her reaction would be.

Keine jumped up slightly, and started shaking. Her hands held onto the tea cup tightly as her heart thumped. Keine looked over at a smiling Mokou, and blushed. She looked the other way, towards the fireplace and blushed harder.

"What is up with you lately? For the past month or so you've been acting slightly jumpy whenever I make contact with you." Mokou asked.

"A-ah, it's...nothing." Keine stuttered. "It's just...uh...this tea. Yes, it's the tea's side effects on me. I guess it made me jumpy or something."

"Ah, okay." Mokou knew this wasn't the reason why she was acting like this, but she just went with it anyway. She stood up and said, "I'm going to bed now, it's late."

Keine dropped her tea cup, and it spilt tea and bounced off the thick carpet. "Ah! Wait-" She said as she grabbed Mokou's hand quickly. "Can... Can you stay a little longer? I got to...tell you something." she whispered quietly.

Mokou yawned, and rubbed her eyes. She sat down next to Keine and asked her, "Mhm, what is it?"

Keine then reached for Mokou's cheeks, with trembling hands, and held them. Her heart was beating fast now, and she felt like she was going to melt. "I..." The words couldn't come out her mouth.

Mokou looked at Keine, confused in so many ways. "Keine...?" she said quietly. Keine took a deep breath in and exhaled. "Mokou, in all the years I've lived, you have been the kindest, most caring, and sweetest person I know. I'm truly glad that you exist. And I...I...uh..." Keine looked away and took her hands off of Mokou's cheeks. She couldn't say it. She was too scared that she would get rejected. One slip up, and their friendship would be gone in an instant.

But, she said them anyway.

"Mokou, I... I love you!" She said suddenly.

Mokou's eyes widened, and her heart skipped a beat. "Y-you...love me?" she asked Keine. "Nobody has loved me in my entire life..." she said with tears welling up in her eyes.

"Y-yes Mokou. I love you a lot. I would have said it earlier, but I was too scared to..." Keine said with a quivering voice.

"I'm...suprised. Nobody, not even my family, has loved me. I was an unwanted child of the Fujiwara clan. Nobody loves me. Yet you, you love...me." The tears escaped from Mokou's eyes, and she cried. "I...I love you too Keine."

Keine smiled, and cupped her cheeks. Mokou looked at Keine, tears trickling down her face. She leaned towards her, right until the point where their faces were centimeters apart.

"Well, all that matters is that I love you"

And with that, Keine kissed Mokou.

---

Mokou then snapped out of that flashback, and came back to reality. She sighed and said, "Ah, you were so beautiful, Keine. I wish I could still caress your long, blue, and sometimes green hair."

She held the letter even tighter, and the tears spilled out from her eyes again. "Keine...I miss you. I want to hug you, kiss you, learn with you..."

Mokou then started sobbing, she regretted taking the Hourai Elixr before, but now she just regretted it more. She wished that she could just die already, and see Keine and embrace her. She wanted to feel her soft hair and be surrounded in her warmth whenever she hugged her. Keine was like an angel, the most beautiful of them all. Thoughts of Keine swarmed Mokou's head, and she couldn't control her sobbing.

And with those thoughts, Mokou let out a hysterical scream.

"Mokou, my beautiful love intrest, you are truly an amazing person. I've never met anyone with such beauty, inside and out. You showed me that life is a precious thing to cherish, and that you should live every day to the fullest. You know, when I first met you, I was terrified. All you ever did was burn, burn, burn things. You were unmerciful, and you burned down entire forests. But, I can see why you did that. It was out of anger, regret, and sadness. You were angry at the fact that you couldn't die. You couldn't escape this world and die a peaceful death. You regretted drinking the Hourai Elixr for those reasons, too. I could also see that deep down, you were sad. You've never, ever, been loved in your entire life. Your family never loved you, and they treated you wrong.

I really did change your life, huh?

I seemed to change you from the merciless, destructive person you were into a good person. I'm glad I could make an impact on your life.

I'm writing this letter because I know within the next few weeks or so, I will go to sleep one night and never awake again. I am ill, but I'm managing to hide my illness from you, for I do not want you to worry too much about me. I just want you to enjoy being happy with me.

Now, as I'm writing this, I feel like I will pass out. I'm feeling very sick.

Actually, it seems like I might just die right now.

But, I must finish this letter.

Mokou, please, remember me. I love you so, so, much. I will always be by your side, forever and ever.

Love, Keine Ka..mishi..ra..sa..wa"
