ONE
Hoseok stared at the tall box that sat in his living room, taking up most of the space as he put off the inevitable. Inside lay an almost human, bought for him as a practical joke one would assume. Either that or one of his friends thought he was lonely enough to desire a robot companion.
Hoseok drummed his fingers on the arm of the chair as he decided what to do with the thing in the box. Did he open it or just send it back? Did he want to send it back? More to the point, why was he even considering keeping it?
Inside is what lonely people bought when they had an inability to function around other humans or just couldn't keep a long lasting relationship. Inside was a BTS-SUGA, the most advanced humanoid robot the world had ever seen. They were created by lonely people, for lonely people. And Hoseok was not lonely.
The definition of lonely is to be sad because one had no friends or company. Although Hoseok had minimal friends he rarely spoke to, he was not sad about this. He found the company of other people rather annoying, and the box that stood in his room was the embodiment of everything Hoseok hated in the human race.
But then, if it was humanity that was the problem, then maybe the robot wouldn't be such bad company after all. If he could tweak the settings slightly, maybe his perfect companion was indeed in there.
Or maybe Hoseok was just trying to find some reason to open the box.
With a sigh, Hoseok decided he would open this box and inspect the piece of metal inside, because that's all it was - a pile of metal fitted together to create one slightly more complex being. That and artificial electric skin that allowed the robot to feel.
According to the many adverts, BTS-SUGA had the capability to feel, though this was unlikely as it didn't have a heart. What was more likely was that they had programmed the robot to be as human-like as possible and to respond to certain things in a certain manner. A close inspection would probably reveal a repeat in reactions to certain stimulus.
The side of the box fell open, revealing the robot inside. It stood motionless, its eyes closed as it awaited its owner to turn it on. Hoseok stared at it, admiring the likeness it had to the human race.
Although he had about as much faith in these as he did the human race, Hoseok had to admit the company had done an impressive job at creating these robots. Its skin, even under close inspection, looked basically real, the hair felt soft to the touch and just like human hair. There was no sign that the thing that stood in front of Hoseok was a robot.
Except for what looked like a small USB port at the back of the robot's neck, which was where you plugged it in to charge or connect up to your computer so you could tweak the personality to suit your taste.
Hoseok grabbed the cord that came with the robot and plugged it in to his computer, connecting it to the robot and beginning calibrations. Apparently, after a personality test, the computer was able to create a personality with such desirable traits that the robot would become your perfect partner.
What a load of bull...
Still, Hoseok did the test and waited as the data transferred over to the robot. He watched as the robot's chest started moving as if it were alive and the body moved every so slightly. The robot's eyes slowly opened, revealing the blue computerised iris which quickly flashed to white and then settled on a natural brown.
The robot's head turned slowly to face Hoseok, still configuring everything inside. It stared at Hoseok, its face void of emotion as it slowly started to move more fluidly, its actions becoming more realistic.
"Hello, my name is BTS-SUGA-YOONGI." The robot said, its voice jumping between a computerised voice and a more human one. Every time its voice jumped, its eyes would flicker white and then bright blue before reverting back to their human colour. "It is a pleasure to serve you."
"I'm sure." Hoseok said, standing up and grabbing a coat from the rack that stood near the door, throwing it at the robot. "Put this on."
"As you wish." The robot said as it pulled its arms through the sleeves, slowly becoming more and more realistic with every movement as the calibrations reached completion.
"And stop acting like a goddam servant." Hoseok said, crossing his arms as he frowned at robot. "If you are to stay here, you can't act like a robot. You're supposed to be realistic. Do you understand?"
"Yes." The robot said, its face emotionless as it stood there. "I understand." A million thoughts per second sped through the robot's head as it slowly matched it personality to fit Hoseok's. A smirk slowly spread across its lips as it watched Hoseok leave the room to go find a spare change of clothes.
Thirty days, twenty-three hours and fifty-four seconds until the refund ran out. All BTS-SUGA-YOONGI had to do by then was make Hoseok want him, need him. It couldn't be more easy...
BTS-SUGA-YOONGI knew exactly what to do.
