CHAPTER TEN, the poetry reading

Gwen's in trouble. She likes two really attractive guys who both like her. Okay...Now that she thinks about it, it's not that bad. But she's still worried because she knows she will hurt someone no matter who she chooses.

It's now the next day and people were teasing Cory for not kissing anyone at the party. "Ladies and gentlemen, the amazing lipless!" A boy teased Cory, clapping and laughing along with friends when they walked by the trio of Cory, Gwen, and Shawn.

Gwen glares at the group of boys that walked by, tempted to go punch them for teasing one of her best friends. She calmed down though when Shawn put his hand on her arm and sent her a look, silently telling her to calm down.

"I'm okay." Cory reassures his best friends and maybe even tries reassuring himself. "Life goes on. Here," As Shawn takes his hand off Gwen's arm (she mentally scolded herself for already missing his touch), Cory offers a pencil to his best friends. "Drive this through my brain."

"It's okay, Cor. I think it's only a few guys who knows." Shawn assures the curly-haired boy. "And it's not like they're going to tell everybody."

"Yeah," Cory nods, lowering his arm. "Nobody else will know."

Gwen's uncle, Jonathan, walks over to them, sharing a smile with his niece when they locked eyes. He stands beside Cory, putting a hand on the boy's shoulder. "Hey, Cory, listen, uh, if you ever need to talk about, you know, anything, I'm always available, okay?" He walked away, shaking his head.

Gwen winces, glancing at Cory. "Okay, so, maybe everyone knows."

"I've sunk so low that even teachers feel sorry for me." Cory frowned.

"Look, in situations like this, it's like my Uncle Ralph always says, 'It's not what you did. It's what they can pin on you'." Shawn told Cory.

"So you're saying I should-"

"Deny." Shawn interrupts Cory. "Deny everything. Hey, you were in a closet. Who else knows what actually went on in there?"

Gwen rolls her eyes. "Topanga knows." Speaking of Topanga, she and the boys turned their attention to the blonde when they heard her defending Cory to a group of girls.

"Just because he didn't kiss me doesn't mean he's some kind of freak." Topanga defended Cory.

"No! No!" Cory panics. "Make her stop!"

Topanga points at the group of girls. "Look all of you, any guy can just crawl in a closet and kiss a girl, but Cory's different because he is a really nice boy."

"Well, I'm a 'nice boy', guys, and now everybody knows it." Cory said to his best friends at lunch that day.

"I don't see why being a 'nice boy' is a bad thing." Gwen commented.

"Hey, baboon." Harley spoke to Cory and Shawn jumped up from his seat immediately as Harley took his seat.

"I'll just be over here. Over here." Shawn grabs Gwen's hand, pulling her out of the chair and made her stand beside him. "Both of us." Gwen chuckled quietly, finding it a bit amusing how scared Shawn was of Harley.

"There's an inspirational thought I'd like to share." Harley said to the curly-haired boy. "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a boy who had no lips." He laughed along with his friends.

"That's a good one, Harley." Joey comments with a laugh. "That's a great one. I'll be laughing at that one for years and years. I'll be telling my kids about it. I'll be telling my grandkids about it, like sixty years from now, unless I don't have grandkids. Then I'll have to tell some strange kids in a park, then the cops will say, 'Hey, you in the rain coat-'"

"Shut up!" Harley interrupted Joey's ramble and Gwen was thankful he did. She didn't know how much she could listen to the boy ramble. It was annoying.

Joey nods. "Okay."

"Look, Corey's obviously depressed." Shawn chimes in, trying to get Harley and his lackies to leave him alone. "So why don't you just leave him alone?" After one harsh look from Harley and his lackies, Shawn takes a step back with a sheepish expression on his face. "Over here." Gwen moved with him since they're still holding hands and speaking of holding hands, it kind of surprised her he didn't make a move to let go yet, but she was more than fine with it. She liked holding his hand.

"Why do you even care about nothings like us?" Cory asked Harley.

"'Cause you seventh graders are my little ant farm." Harley responds. "I watch you work and play and run through your tiny tunnels. And when I hear that one of my little ants is getting his legs ripped off," He shakes his head and chuckles. "Well, I can't miss that."

Cory tilts his head to the side. "And here I thought my life had no meaning."

Frankie puts a hand on his shoulder. "Glad we could brighten your day."

The next day at lunch Cory, Gwen and Shawn sat at their usual table, but this time Eric joined them. Cory was informing Gwen and Shawn that he actually kissed Topanga at the poetry reading Eric took him to. Gwen was surprised that Cory and Topanga finally kissed, but she wasn't so surprised after hearing Eric helped get them together.

"I'm telling you, it's a new breakthrough in dating technology." Cory spoke.

Shawn raises his eyebrows at him. "You made out at a poetry reading?"

Gwen shakes her head. "Yeah, I wouldn't call that a breakthrough."

Cory grins. "Oh, I love poetry now."

Shawn glances at Gwen with a smirk. "Maybe you and I should go to a poetry reading." He winked at her, hoping she got the hint and Gwen did. She rolled her eyes playfully, feeling her face heat up and she playfully shoved him, earning a laugh form the dark-haired boy.

"In fact," Cory continues. "I think I'm thinking of becoming a poet. There once was a boy named Cory..."

"Who now has an interesting story..." Eric chimed in.

Gwen tilts her head to the side and raises her eyebrows. She had to admit this wasn't so bad at first. "He learned about kissing..." Cory continued.

Eric smiles. "And all he was missing..."

"When he and Topanga made-out." Shawn cut in with a smile on his face.

Gwen cringes, reaching over to pat his shoulder. "That doesn't rhyme, but A for effort, Shawnie." Shawn looked at her with a smile and Gwen couldn't help but smile back at him.

Cory glances at Shawn with amusement. "Shawn," Shawn looks back at Cory when the curly-haired boy speaks to him. "Can you say summer school?" Shawn sheepishly smiled and the four of them went back to eating their lunch when Topanga and a few girls walked by their table.

Topanga and the group of girls stop at the table and the blonde smiles at Cory. "Hi, Cory."

Cory looks at her with a smile. "Hi, Topanga."

"Well, see ya." Topanga said.

Cory nods. "See ya." The group of girls giggles as they follows Topanga out of the cafeteria. Cory groans, glancing at his best friends and brother. "When are they ever going to leave me alone?"
