CHAPTER NINETEEN, the thrilla in philla
Gwen was in the hallway sitting with Cory and Shawn, sitting on the ledge by the stairs and Shawn stood by her as Topanga walked by with a notepad and pen. She smiles at the trio. "Okay, guys. Yearbook time." She looks down at her notebook, reading off what it says. "As you look back on your first year at John Adams, what would you consider your greatest accomplishment and why?"
"I'm trying out for the play which is way out of my comfort zone." Gwen admits, earning surprised looks from her friends. "Yeah, I know." She chuckles. "But I finally convinced myself to do it so no one try and stop me."
"I'm sure you'll get in, Neve." Shawn reassured her with a soft smile that made her heart skip a beat.
"Yeah." Cory agrees with a grin. "There's no way you won't get in the play."
"We'll support you no matter what." Topanga added with a smile.
"Thanks, guys." Gwen smiled at her friends, happy to have them by her side and knowing they support her with this. Trying out for the play is not something she would do. She's been told by her friends and family that she has a great singing voice so she figured she might as well put that to use and try something new at the same time.
"Let's see. I mean, there's so many." Cory said.
"It's hard to pick just one." Shawn agreed.
"There was the time we-"
"No." Shawn interrupts Cory, shaking his head. "That wasn't us."
Cory chuckles. "Well, what about the time when we-"
Shawn nods. "Also not us."
"You guys are the two most pathetic students in school." Topanga rolled her eyes.
Shawn glances at Cory with a smile. "That's an accomplishment."
"At least I know G has accomplished something since she's the only one of you three with any brain cells." Topanga chuckled, giving Gwen a smile. Gwen smiled back at her and nodded in agreement. The boys would've been offended but they knew Topanga was right.
After Topanga walked away, Cory sighs. "She's right, Shawn. I mean, the year's almost over, and I haven't made a name for myself. And you know whose fault that is?"
Gwen raises an eyebrow. "Yours?" Shawn nodded, pointing at her in agreement.
Cory frowns. "No, why should I take the fall? I blame..." He looks around the hallway, but then notices the wrestling team nearby, one of the members bullying a nerd. "The jocks!"
"What'd the jocks ever do to you?" Gwen asked curiously.
"Because they wear those stupid jackets and therefore get all the girls." Cory replies. "What chance do I have?" The trio didn't realize the wrestling team was walking over to them as Cory talked.
Gwen's eyes widen as one of the members picked Shawn up. "Woah!" Shawn's eyes widen. "Major growth spurt."
"Too heavy." The boy holding Shawn said, glancing at one of his friends and then set Shawn down.
Cory backs up, his hands in front of him defensively. "Please don't. Please don't. II had a fat, heavy breakfast." Despite his protests, the boy picked him up anyway.
"We've got an opening in the 108 pound in the Superconfetti Weight Division on the wrestling team." A blonde-haired boy on the team explains. He glances at the boy holding Cory. "Savage?"
The boy called Savage shakes Cory around as he holds him. He smiles. "Perfect." He then set Cory down.
"Congratulations, kid." The blonde-haired boy smiles. "You're on the wrestling team."
"Yeah." Cory scoffs. "Like there's a chance in the universe I'd ever want to be on your stupid wrestling team."
"He'll be happy about it in five, four, three, two..." Gwen counted down, knowing that Cory would like this despite what he says.
"Here's your jacket." The blonde-haired boy said, holding up Cory's letterman jacket.
"Ooh." Cory grinned.
"Called it." Gwen smiled proudly to herself and crossed her arms. Shawn glanced at her with a fond look, finding it cute and amusing that she was so proud of herself for that.
Cory holds his jacket close to him, glancing at his friends with a wide smile. "Look, guys. My jacket."
The blonde-haired boy then hands over his uniform. "Here's your uniform."
"Uniform?" Cory excitedly comments. "This is like Christmas, you know?"
The blonde-haired boy pats his shoulder. "Here's your candy."
Cory glances at him in confusion but curiosity". "Candy?"
The blonde-haired girl who had been with the wrestling team walks over to Cory, wrapping an arm around his shoulders. "Hi, I'm Candy."
Cory smiles widely at her. "Sweet."

"Hey, Gwen." Kamden greets Gwen later that day in the hallway. He assumed she was trying out for the play since she was in line for auditions. "Nervous?" He guessed, noticing the way she was biting her nails.
Gwen looks sheepish and stops biting her nails. "You have no idea."
"I was gonna audition as well." Kamden admits. "So at least if we both get in you'll have a friendly face in the play." He smiled, trying to reassured her and help calm her down. He had planned to audition the play since he liked singing and had a pretty good voice. He was happy to find out Gwen was auditioning. She would make this whole experience a lot more enjoyable.
Gwen is relieved when he said that. One of the reasons she was nervous about this was the fact she wouldn't know anyone who would be in the play. So hearing that Kamden was auditioning as well calmed those nerves down a bit. "Don't worry, Gwen." Kamden continues, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder. "You're gonna be amazing. Just take a deep breath."
She takes his advice and takes a deep breath to try and calm down. "Thank you, Kamden." She smiles at the blonde-haired boy. "You always know just the right thing to say to cheer me up."
Kamden smiles brightly at her, taking his hand off her shoulder. "I'm always happy to put that smile back on your face."
Her heart skip a beat at his word and her smile turns shy. Then suddenly her name was called out and it was her turn to audition. "Good luck," He tells her with a soft smile. He gives her a thumbs up as she began walking to the door. "You got this."
Gwen took a deep breath before pushing the doors open to the auditorium.
****
The next day she was nervous to find out if she was on the cast list. But when she heard Kamden's excited voice calling out to her, she got her hopes up. "Gwen! Gwen!" Gwen turns away from her locker, raising her eyebrows as Kamden ran over to her with a grin. "You won't believe it!" He excitedly said. "You're in the play! And not only that, you're the lead!"
Gwen's eyes widen in disbelief and she gasps. "Yeah, you're right. I don't believe." She shakes her head, closing her locker. "I gotta see this for myself." She followed Kamden over to where the cast list is posted on the wall by the auditorium. The play that the school was holding happened to be Romeo and Juliet. And right by Juliet's name on the list was her name. She noticed that Kamden played Romeo and that made her butterflies swarm in her stomach.
"Oh my gosh!" Gwen said excitedly, her lips forming into a wide smile. She hits Kamden's shoulder excitedly. "You weren't kidding!"
"Why would I kid about this? We're playing the leads!" Kamden grins. He pauses and shrugs. "Which is surprising to say the least since this is our first time auditioning." Then he grins again. "But who cares about that, I still can't believe it that we're the leads. This is gonna be so cool."
At lunch that day, Gwen was tackled in a hug by Shawn which made her laugh. "Hi, Shawnie." She smiles. "What's up?"
"Can I not give my talented best friend a hug?" Shawn asked and she could almost hear the grin in his voice. "I found out you got the lead in the play, that's huge, Neve." As they pull away from her, he looks at her with a proud smile. "I know this isn't something you usually do, but I'm so proud of you for putting yourself out there."
Gwen's face turns a bit pink, a bright smile on her lips as her heart flutters. "Thanks, Shawnie. That means a lot to me." After realizing they both been staring at each other longer than they should, she clears her throat awkwardly and looks away from him. Shawn rubs the back of his neck awkwardly, his face a light shade of pink. "So, uh, where's Cory?" Gwen questioned, deciding to change the subject.
"With his new jock friends." Shawn replied, gesturing over to where Cory sat at a table with the wrestling team who were crushing empty soda cans with their heads.
"How do they do that and not hurt themselves?" Gwen mumbled with a wince. She and Shawn watched as the team tried convincing Cory to crush a can with his forehead as well. Cory caved in and tried it, immediately regretting his decision.
Cory is squinting, his hand on his forehead while he stumbles over to his best friends who help steady him. "Hey, hey, you okay?" Shawn questioned, his eyes full of concern.
"Yes, Pat...But I'd like to solve the puzzle." Cory stammered weakly.
"Cor." Gwen snaps her fingers in front of his face. "Snap out of it. You're not in Wheel of Fortune."
"Cory, why are you doing this to yourself?" Shawn inquired.
"So I'll finally have cool stuff to put in the yearbook," Cory answers. He smiles, pointing at Gwen. "I mean, that's what Gwen did with auditioning for the play."
"That wasn't the only reason though." Gwen corrects him. "I wanted to audition for me to get out of my comfort zone."
Cory shrugs. "Okay," His eyes lit up again as he gins. "Oh, and this jacket is a babe magnet."
Just as he said that, Candy walks over to him with a smirk. "Matthews, look. Two cans." She then crushed two empty soda cans with her forehead. Gwen and her friends winced and grimaced at the action.
"How does that not hurt?" Gwen murmured.
"Let's get out of here before she reloads." Shawn suggested.
****
After school at Chubbies, Gwen was hanging out with Shawn, Cory was there as well, but he was hanging out with the wrestling team. "Hi, Panga." Gwen greeted the blonde with a smile when she walked over to her and Shawn.
"Hey." Shawn smiles. "Topanga, you wanted to ask me more questions for the yearbook?"
"Uh, yeah...." Topanga replies, not really paying attention to him since she was too busy staring at Cory. "Where do you think Cory's gonna end up in ten years?"
At hearing this, Gwen and Shawn exchange a knowing look and they both glance at Topanga with raised eyebrows. "You mean me, don't you?" Shawn asked.
Topanga turns to face him. "That's what I said."
Shawn shakes his head, grinning at her. "No, you said Cory."
Gwen gasps, smiling widely at Topanga. "Panga, you like Cory!"
"I do not!" Topanga defended herself, her eyes widening.
Shawn keeps grinning at her. "You like him."
With a glare in her eyes, Topanga grabs the collar of his shirt. "I do not. You say that again I will kill you."
"Hey, Panga, we're friends but if you try to kill him you gotta go through me first." Gwen chimed in, pulling Topanga away from Shawn.
Shawn didn't seemed faze at all by Topanga's response. He just kept grinning at her. "You like him a lot." Topanga let go of his shirt, rolling her eyes and she left Chubbies. Gwen turned her attention to Cory and the wrestling team when she heard them roughhousing with each other. She then noticed her uncle walking by, breaking up the wrestling team, standing between Cory and the team. He most likely thought the wrestling team was hurting Cory. Gwen didn't even know her uncle was here so she was surprised to see him.
"Lay off him, let him go!" Jonathan exclaims. "Alright, Matthews, which one of these goons threw the first punch?"
Cory points at himself. "This goon."
Jonathan stares at him in disbelief. "No, seriously."
Cory nods. "I did. I'm on the wrestling team, I mean, we're just horsing around." He smiles, putting his hands in the pockets of his letterman jacket. "That's what jocks do, and I am a jock."
Jonathan glances around at the team, who all nod and smile as if confirming what Cory said. "Oh, man, I hope you're not a rare blood type." Jonathans commented, glancing at Cory in concern.
"Mr. Turner....Sidebar." Cory gestured for the teacher to follow him off to the side away from the team. "I'm the only one in my weight class. I never have to fight. What can go wrong?"
"Three, two, one..." Gwen counted down, knowing that something would go wrong.
"Matthews," A member of the wrestling team walks over to him. "You got a fight."
Gwen turns to Shawn with a grin. "I swear, I should be a psychic or something." Shawn chuckled, smiling at her in amusement.
Cory glances at Jonathan nervously. "AB-Negative." He said, telling him his blood type.
"Universal recipient." Jonathan nods, patting him on the back. "That should come in handy." He started to walk away before he noticed his niece. He smiles at her and waves. "Hey, Gwenny."
"Hi, Uncle Jon." Gwen smiled and waved back at him as he left the restaurant.
"You gotta earn the jacket. Somebody just signed up in your weight class." The blonde-haired boy said, standing behind Cory and putting his hands on his shoulders.
Then Frankie walks over to them. Cory glances at his fellow teammate nervously. "What exactly is the range in my weight class?"
"No, Matthews," Griffin walks over to them with a chuckle. "Not Frankie, But someone who's looking to make a name for himself, be his own person, carve his own name."
Joey joins the group, glaring at Cory. "Yeah, Matthews, and I'm going to carve me a niche right in your stinkin' head. Nice jacket." He laughed.
****
Gwen would've joined Shawn with coming to check on Cory while he worked out before the match, but she had her first practice for the play. The next day, she was in the gym standing by Shawn and Candy behind Cory. The rest of the wrestling team was in the gym as well to watch the fight between Cory and Joey.
"Joey trained with Frankie, the immovable object." Shawn reminds Cory, his hands on Cory's shoulders. "My advice to you-Move."
Gwen nods, smiling at Cory and patting his shoulder. "Good luck, Cor."
"To the winner goes the jacket," A member of the wrestling team announces, pulling Cory over onto the mat. "And the spot on the team. Now, let's go. Shake hands." Cory and Joey shook hands as the ref blowed the whistle.
They back up and Joey takes a running start at Cory. Cory was quick to move to the side though. Joey turns around, looking upset. "Oh, he moved, Frankie. Is that in the rules?" Cory then grabbed his arm and leg, pulling him down to the mat. "What the heck you doing?" Joey exclaimed in surprise as Cory pinned him to the mat.
The ref then laid by him, hitting the mat signaling that Cory won the match. Gwen's eyes widen with surprise and she shares a shocked look with Shawn. But they both smiled as they walked over to the mat with Candy. Cory laughs excitedly, getting up and going over to high five his best friends and Candy.
"Oh, yeah! I won! I won!" Cory shouted excitedly. The wrestling team clapped for him, all looking proud, as Joey and the ref got up.
"Lost to Matthews-I don't think so." Joey glared at Cory.
Cory chuckles, taking the jacket from one of the wrestling members who handed it to him. "I got the jacket though."
"He beat you by the rules, fair and square." A wrestling member told Joey.
"Okay," Joey nods. "Then-Then I challenge Matthews to another fight, unfair and unsquare, after hours, mano a rato."
"I don't need to fight you, Joey." Cory said, pulling his letterman jacket on. He smiles. "I already proved myself."
"Now I think you're proving yourself ot be yellow. I'll bet you bleed lemonade." Joey taunted.
Cory starts walking away from Joey and Frankie with the wrestling team and Candy, followed by Gwen and Shawn. Frankie holds Joey back from Joey going after Cory. "Oh, you can run, but you can't hide, Matthews! You'll remember this face 'cause it's gonna haunt you!"
****
The next few days Joey kept taunting Cory and trying to pressure him into fighting him with no rules. Cory eventually gave in and Gwen knew he was regretting it now. Gwen sat beside him and Shawn on the bench outside of the gym. "Guys, why did I agree to fight Joey? I mean, who am I kidding? I'm not a jock. If Joey wants this stupid jacket so much he can have it."
Shawn glances at him with surprise, but he smiles. "Backing down from a fight. Now, that tkaes guts."
"Yeah, we're proud of you, Cor." Gwen smiled.
"It's just Griff and a couple of thugs." Cory shrugs. "Who cares what they think? I mean, it's not like it's in front of the entire school."
Gwen and Shawn followed Cory inside the gym. Turns out it wasn't just Griffin and a bunch of thugs. The whole gym was full of the whole school watching on the bleachers. The gym was decorated and there were even food venders there. There was an actual wrestling mat in the middle of the gym. Everyone cheered at seeing Cory.
"You see? Wrong about everything." Cory groaned.
"We should leave now while you're still alive." Gwen suggested.
"Come on, Cory." Shawn grabs his jacket and moves to the door. "Let's bail."
"Matthews," Griffin grabs Cory's arm before he could leave with Gwen and Shawn. "Where do you think you're going?"
Gwen and Shawn stops leaving, turning back to Griffin. Cory glances at his friends with a nervous chuckle, pointing at Griffin. "He thinks I'm this Cory Matthews guy too. I don't get it. That's, like, the eighth person today who said that." He pats Griffin's back and moves to leave. "Wow. I'll see you later."
"No, I don't think so." Griffin grabs the back of Cory's shirt, pulling him back. He wraps his arm around Cory's shoulder. "I've put a lot of work into this. Phone calls were made. Favors were called in."
Then suddenly a voice booms over the speakers. "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Robert Goulet."
Everyone cheered as Robert Goulet walks in the gym and climbs on the wrestling mat. The lights turn off and a spotlight is on him as he sang the national anthem. When he was done, the lights turn back on and Cory had tried to sneak out, but Griffin pulled him back.
"Okay, are you ready to rumble?" Robert calls out and everyone cheers in response. "Tonight's main event- Joey 'the rat' Epstein versus Cory 'the Cory' Matthews." Everyone cheers loudly for Cory. "And before we get started, I'd like to introduce some of the VIPS with us tonight. From TV's Baywatch, Yasmine Bleeth."
Gwen was surprised when Yasmine Bleeth walked into the gym wearing a black and silver sparkly dress as everyone cheered for her. She had no idea how Griffin managed to get her to come here, but after seeing them kissing she started to realize why she was there.
"Help. I'm drowning!" Shawn pretended to act like he was drowning to get Yasmine's attention.
Yasmine glances over at him with furrowed eyebrows. "What?"
Shawn looks sheepish, lowering his arms. "It was worth a shot." Gwen chuckled at him and rolled her eyes playfully.
"And now one of John Adam's all-time legendary thugs." Robert said. "Now, you know him as Frankie Staccino's father. The rest of the world knows him as the eleventh times heavyweight wrestling champion of the world, Vader!"
The back door opened and a big man with a lot of muscles comes in wearing a wrestling uniform. He also had a champion belt on. He walked over to the ring, stepping over the ropes.
"Thank you, Bob. Thank you very much." With a growl, Vader pushed Bob to the side and walked over to Cory, who was practicing punches.
Gwen nervously bit her lower lip. She knew this wouldn't end well for Cory. "Matthews," Cory turns to Vader, his eyes widening slightly. "Let me tell you something. If Joey don't get the job done, Vader will. Because I am fear. Stick around, and find out who the real man is."
Cory smiles nervously. "I'm sorry, sir. I didn't get your name." Vader then started yelling at him with an intimidating look. Cory freaked out and stepped on the stool in his corner to try and get away from him.
"Alright," Bob speaks up. "Get to your corners...And come out fighting when you hear the sound of the ding dong."
Griffin then steps through the ropes to get on the ring. "Give my best to Vera, huh?" He smiles, wrapping his arm around Bob and taking the mic from him. "Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Robert Goulet."
Everyone cheers as he waves and gets off the ring. Eric walks over to his brother, tapping him on the shoulder to get his attention "Cory, I didn't know you were fighting."
"Then what are you doing here?" Cory asked.
"A guy in the parking lot sold me a ticket. He said, 'Go see an idiot get pounded.'" Eric handed the ticket he got to cory.
"'See an idiot get pounded.'" Cory read off what the ticket said.
"Cost me fifty bucks, but it was worth it. Sitting next to the girl from 'Baywatch'." Eric grinned and then walked away.
"Oh, man. I got to get out of here before this thing starts." Cory murmured nervously.
"Cory, what's this for?" Shawn asked curiously, pulling the string on the small gong that made it go off.
Gwen shot Shawn a glare, elbowing his side. "Shawn."
Cory's eyes widened as the sound of the ding dong went off and everyone cheered. "Oops." Shawn sheepishly smiled at Cory.
Cory then got up, walking around the mat nervously as he and Joey circled each other. Cory ducked when Joey lunged at him. He ducked once again after Joey tried going at him again. Cory leaned back against one corner, kicking Joey back when he ran at him again.
Cory then ran at him, managing to pick Joey up and threw him on the mat. Gwen watched with surprise as Cory jumped over him and then stood on the rings, getting ready to jump on Joey. Everyone cheered loudly while he jumped on Joey.
"Frankie, tag me! Tag me!" Joey called out, reaching his hand to Frankie. Joey got Cory off him and rolled off the mat, switching places with Frankie, who was bigger than Cory.
Everyone booed Frankie while he stepped onto the mat. Cory backs up, looking nervous. "This really isn't fair."
"Good." Frankie smirked.
"Cory, Cory!" Eric calls out. "Come on, get out! Get out, come on."
"Okay, but you're in." Cory got off the ring, earning a confused look from Eric.
"What?" Eric then let out a yell as Frankie pulled him on the ring. Eric tried running at Frankie, but then fell down. He then got up and managed to hit the side of Frankie's head, causing everyone to cheer. Eric headbutted Frankie, making everyone cheer louder.
"Son, you're taking too long." Vader chimes in. "Give daddy a tag." Frankie high fived him and got off the ring, Vader taking his place.
Eric's eyes widen and he stares at Vader with fear. "This chump's mine!" Vader shouted and Eric looked at him with a scared expression. Vader growled as he grabbed Eric and picked him up.
"Hey, pal! You can't do that to my brother." Cory yelled and got on the ring. He ran at Vader, only to fall on his face.
"Make me, you little rug rat." Vader threatened.
Gwen noticed out of the corner of her eye her Uncle Jon and Mr. Feeny had walked into the gym and looked surprised. She didn't blame them.
"Put the Matthews boy down." Mr. Feeny demanded.
"Come over here and say that." Vader challenged with a growl.
Gwen's eyes widen with surprise when Mr. Feeny stepped over the ropes and got on the mat. She didn't think he would do that. Vader clearly didn't either because of the shocked look on his face.
Jonathan kneels by the ring, getting Cory's attention. "Yo, Matthews. Sidebar."
Cory rolls over to him and stares at him with disbelief. "Are you kidding me?"
"I thought you said you'd never have to fight." Jonathan reminded him.
"Mr. Turner, you should know by now I'm wrong about absolutely everything." Cory muttered. Jonathan just sighed and stood up.
"Set him down." Mr. Feeny ordered.
"Feeny, you can't tell me what to do anymore. I'm not one of your punk students. I'm the face of death!" Vader exclaimed.
"It was scarier when you had acne." Mr. Feeny retorts. "Your little bully tactics didn't work back then, and they're not going to work now. Put him down."
"Make me!" Vader shouted.
"I'd be glad to..." Mr. Feeny said, leaning forward to whisper, "Leslie."
"You wouldn't." Vader's eyes widened.
"I would!" Mr. Feeny nodded.
Vader drops Eric and he quickly got off the ring. "Alright, alright. You won this round. But next time, and there will be a next time, Texas Death Match. Loser leaves town."
"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Mr. Feeny waves a dismissive hand and turns to face Jonathan. "This is why I avoid reunions."
****
The next day at school, Gwen is sitting on the ledge by the stairs where Cory and Shawn stood by her. Shawn stood close enough to her where their sides brushed up against each other, but they didn't care.
"Guys, you think if I stayed in the ring that I would have a shot?" Cory questioned.
"Yeah, ad you also had a shot at dating Yasmine Bleeth." Shawn remarked, earning a giggle from Gwen, causing him to smile at her.
Cory didn't catch on to the sarcasm, his eyes lighting up and he looks at his friends hopefully. "Really? Did she say something?"
"You break my heart sometimes, Cor." Shawn admitted, staring at him with disbelief.
"Heard you wanted to see me, Matthews." One of the guys from the Wrestling Team said as he walked over to them with Candy.
"Yeah, I don't really need this anymore." Cory explains, handing him the letterman jacket. "Thanks for the shot."
The blonde-haired boy smiles, patting Cory's shoulder. "You're okay, Matthews."
"He always was." Shawn chimed in.
"And always will be." Gwen added.
"Candy, where are you going?" Cory questioned after she started walking away with the boy.
"I go with the jacket." Candy shrugs. "Didn't you know that?"
Cory slowly nods. "I probably should have."
"Hey, guys." Topanga greets, walking over to the trio. "I got to hand in Yearbook write-ups tomorrow and I still have a few more questions for Cory."
"You like him." Shawn said through a fake sneeze. Gwen chuckled and rolled her eyes.
"Shut up." Topanga glared at Shawn.
"This is our cue to leave." Gwen says, getting off the railing. She smiles at her friends. "We'll see you guys later." She then pulled Shawn away from them and they walked down the hallway.
"What are you doing today after school, Neve?" Shawn curiously asked.
"I have to stay after school for play practice. There's two weeks until the play and I know that's a lot of time, but Mr. Russell is a perfectionist and wants everything to be perfect. We don't want another incident like last year." Gwen told him.
Shawn grimaced. He remembered her telling him about how the lead actor of the play they did last year messed up his lines so many times and everything was going wrong so badly that the director finally had enough and quit the job. She was lucky she got the lead role in the play this year, though. And that the new director didn't quit either.
"What about you?" She asked.
"I was hoping we could hang out. But now I have to figure out what I'm going to do." Shawn shrugged.
"Why don't you come to play practice with me?" Gwen suggested.
Shawn raises his eyebrows. "They let other people who aren't in the play to watch rehearsal?"
"Well..." Gwen pauses with a cringe. "No, I'm sure we can sneak you in and you can hide by sitting in the back of the auditorium. Plus Mr. Russell will be too busy with making everything perfect to realize someone who isn't a part of the play is there."
Shawn laughs. "Yeah, alright. Sounds fun."
Gwen smiles at him, but then nerves and anxiety appeared. She felt this way normally before practice and now even more knowing one of her best friend's would watch her rehearse. What if she messed up?
Shawn frowned, seeing her expression. He stops walking, causing her to stop too. He grabs her shoulders, turning her around to face him. "You're gonna be great. You were picked to be the female lead for the play for a reason."
Gwen blushes and shyly looks away. "How did you know what I was thinking?"
"Really?" Shawn laughs. He smiles softly at her. "Neve, I think I known you long enough to know when you're nervous or anxious. But you shouldn't feel that way, I'm sure you're a great actress."
"Thanks, Shawnie." Gwen said gratefully, giving him a soft smile.
"Anytime, Guinevere." He grinned, his heart fluttering.
Gwen giggled and rolled her eyes, ignoring the butterflies swarming in her stomach. She wasn't really used to being called her full name, she usually went by Gwen or Neve. But hearing Shawn call her Guinevere always made her heart skip a beat.
Gwen and Shawn continued walking down the hallway together, talking and laughing as they walked to their next class, both unaware that a certain blonde-haired boy watching with a frown.
