CHAPTER ELEVEN, sister theresa

"So, my mom says, 'why don't you try being polite for just one day and see if people don't notice?'." Cory explained to his two best friends as they walked down the school hallway.

Gwen sends him a small smile. "You're polite..." Her voice trails off as she shrugs. "Some of the time."

Cory sarcastically smiles at her. "Gee, thanks." Gwen sympathetically smiled at him in response.

"For what it's worth, Cor, I think you're polite." Shawn comments. "Then again, polite in my family means wearing a tie for your arraignment."

Mr. Feeny passes the trio int he hallway, holding a student by his arm and a fire extinguisher in his other hand and the boy was covered with smoke. "I appreciate your quick response with the fire extinguisher, Mr. Mendoza, but in the future please..." He hands the fire extinguisher to the boy. "Wait for a fire." The boy walked down the hallway while Mr. Feeny sneezed.

"Oh, bless you, Mr. Feeny." Cory said.

"Oh, thank you," Mr. Feeny looks at Cory with surprise when he realized Cory is the one who said that to him. "Mr. Matthews, that's surprisingly considerate."

Cory smiles, folding his hands behind his back. "Good. Tell my mother." Mr. Feeny doesn't respond to that, and he walked away the same time Eric walked passed the trio.

Cory faces his best friends with a smile. "Now watch as I shift into turbo-polite."

Gwen furrows her eyebrows and tilts her head to the side. "Pretty sure turbo-polite isn't a thing."

Shawn chuckles, patting her shoulder. "Just let him believe it's a thing."

The two best friends lean against a wall of lockers, watching their best friend be polite with his brother and then accidentally bumped into a girl in the process. After Cory's interaction with the girl (who gwen recognized as t.k., she only knew of t.k. since she had seen the girl around school) Gwen and Shawn walks over to Cory. "She wrote seven numbers on my hand." Cory shows his right hand to his friends that had seven numbers on it written in ink. "What could that possibly mean?"

Gwen groans, leaning her head back. "Oh my gosh, are you really that dumb?"

Shawn glances at her with an amused smile and looks at Cory with an 'are you serious' expression. "It means call her."

"Shawn, how can I call her when I don't have-" Cory stops in the middle of his own sentence when he realized something. He smiles at his hand and drags out the word he says next, "Oh."

Gwen rolls her eyes. "Now he gets it."

"You know, last night T.K. and I talked on the phone for, like, two hours." Cory says to his best friends the next day at school when they're in homeroom. "I mean, it beats my previous time with a girl by, like," He pauses for a few moments before saying, "Two hours." He smiles. "She even asked me out to the movies this Friday night."

Gwen and Shawn exchange a surprised look before they both look back at Cory. "She asked you out?" Shawn asked.

"Yep." Cory smiles from ear to ear. "And I just might let her take me."

"Alright, homeroom, announcements." Jonathan Turner speaks as he walks into his classroom. He stands at the front of the classroom, facing everyone. "Uh...Stay awake." He sits on the edge of his desk and looks at the paper he held. "Item one-chess squad. All students interested in trying out for the fast-paced world of-" He stops talking when he glanced at his students to see the bored looks on their faces. "Yeah. Um," He gets up from his desk, looking back at the paper as he walks around the room, ending at the door. "Jumping to relevant stuff-uh, item eleven-due to a freezer mishap, fish kebabs will not be served in the cafeteria today as scheduled."

Everyone claps and cheers. Shawn smiles proudly and stands up, thanking everyone as he bows. Jonathan waves a dismissive hand as Shawn sits back down. "I don't want to know. Uh, item fifteen-"

"Hey." A voice interrupted Jonathan and Gwen looked behind her, surprised to see to see T.K.

Jonathan glances at her. "Hey back."

T.K. smiles at Cory. "Ah, there he is. There's my guy." Cory smiled at her in response.

"You know, it's funny, I got this thing here called homeroom." Jonathan said and T.K. handed him a note.

"Yeah, this note covers it." T.K. walked over to stand by Cory.

"T.K., what are you doing in my homeroom?" Cory questioned.

"Our homeroom now, sweetie." T.K. corrected him.

"Okay, Theresa, welcome aboard. Pick yourself a desk." Jonathan spoke to T.K. after reading the note.

"Mr. Turner, is it okay to sit two to a desk?" T.K. inquired.

Jonathan looks at her, shaking his head. "I'm thinking no."

T.K. tilts her head to the side. "For a five-spot?"

Jonathan pointed at the empty seat in front of Gwen in response. Yes, Kamden was not at school today. He got sick so he had to stay home and Gwen was planning on going to check on him after school and give him the homework he missed.

T.K. sent a friendly smile to Gwen when she walked to the seat in front of Gwen. Gwen returned the smile to her and T.K. sat down, turning to face Cory. T.K. aimed a finger gun at him and winked at him with a smile on her face. Cory did the same thing back to her although it looked less cool when he did it.

****

After school Gwen had went to Kamden's house and dropped off his homework and even brought over his favorite kind of ice cream. Gwen even offered to stay longer to keep him company, but Kamden didn't want her to get sick because of him although he did appreciate her offer and the fact she had also brought him his favorite kind of ice cream without him asking her to warmed his heart. Gwen was also informed by Kamden's mom that Kamden only has a cold so he wasn't sick that bad, but he wouldn't be at school for a few days so he can get better which was understandable. Gwen had to admit she would miss seeing him and she promised Kamden she would always check on him after school.

When Gwen told the boys about Kamden being sick and not going to be at school for a few days, Shawn honestly was a bit happy when he heard that. Not only did that mean he didn't have to worry about her and Kamden getting closer, that meant he could spend more time with Gwen. At the next day of school, Gwen and Shawn were walking down the hallway when Gwen pointed out spray paint art on the lockers.

"Looks like T.K. wrote a love letter to Cory." Gwen observed, walking over to the lockers where Cory stood.

Shawn nods, glancing at the spray paint art that was a red heart with 'tk loves cm' in the middle of it. "Very subtle."

"Guys, she's obsessive. She's crazy." Cory looks at his best friends worriedly. "What's going to happen to me?"

"Just relax, Cor. Tell her to slow down." Shawn points at him. "Your date with her tonight-cancel it."

T.K. then walks down the steps behind Cory. "So, like my artwork, fuzzy?" She asked, smiling at Cory.

A surprised yelp left Gwen's lips when Shawn grabbed her hand and gently tugs her with him as he began to walk away from Cory and T.K. "Okay," She turns around and quickly begins walking with Shawn to keep up with him. "Guess we're going."

"Why'd you want to leave all of a sudden?" Gwen questioned, glancing at Shawn with confusion as the two best friends walked down the hallway.

"Sorry," Shawn apologizes. He shakes his head and groans. "I just didn't want to deal with the lovebirds."

Gwen chuckles and nods. "Understandable."

They walk down the hallway in comfortable silence until Gwen realized that something was touching her hand and she glanced down at her left hand to see she and Shawn were holding hands now. Her face turns pink and her heartbeat increased. "Uh, Shawn."

Shawn looks at her with a small smile and raised eyebrows. "Yeah?"

He didn't seem to mind that they were holding hands, and Gwen honestly didn't want to let go yet so she changed her mind on telling him. She shakes her head, smiling softly at him. "Never mind."

****

In English class, Cory told Gwen and Shawn about how he canceled the date with T.K. and how T.K. seemed upset about it. "Maybe I should go apologize." Cory suggested.

"No." Shawn shakes his head. "This politeness thing's pulling you down, man. 'Till this whole thing blows over, go rude."

Gwen rolls her eyes. "Please don't listen to Shawn."

Jonathan walks over to the trio, leaning on Shawn's desk and glances at the three best friends. "Listen, I-I'm sorry. I was teaching while you were talking. My mistake."

While Gwen only had a guilty look on her face, her best friends shrug in response and smile. "No problem." Shawn said and Gwen facepalmed.

"We're sorry." Gwen told him, smiling apologetically at her uncle.

Jonathan sends her a thankful smile, standing up as he looks at the three best friends. "Guys, while you're in my class whatever personal stuff you got going on-" He gestures to the door. "Check it at the door." He walked to the front of the classroom just as Joey walked into the classroom.

"Yo. You Mr. Turner?" Joey points at Jonathan. "Janitor Bud wants to see you down in the parking lot. Something about his truck running over your motorcycle."

A panicked look forms on Jonathan's face. "My bike?" An angry expression then formed on his face and he starts to storm out of the classroom. He stops at the door, facing the class. "Read poems." He then ran into the hallway.

"Okay," Frankie walks in, gesturing for everyone to get out. "Everybody out in the hall." Students begin to get up and walk out as he and Joey step out of the way so they can leave. "Let's go, move it along, no talking, single file."

Cory, Gwen, and Shawn stood and went to follow the rest of the class. Gwen and Shawn followed everyone, but Harley stopped Cory from walking out to the hall.

****

It turns out that T.K. is actually Harley's little sister which makes a lot of sense. And now Cory has to go on the date otherwise Harley would beat him up for breaking T.K.'s heart. So Gwen and Shawn were at Cory's  house, helping him pick out what to wear.

"Alright." Cory walks down the stairs to the living room where Gwen and Shawn sat on the couch. "I think this'll work."

"Black shoes, white socks, bow tie." Shawn notices. He smiles amusingly at Cory. "Should do it."

Gwen nods in agreement, smiling at Cory. "Not bad, Cor."

Cory smiles and glances at his brother when he saw his brother walk in. "Eric," He outstretches his arms and then lowers them. "How do I look?"

As he eats a sandwich he held, Eric stands in front of the fireplace, staring at his brother. "Like a ventriloquist's dummy."

Cory glances at his suit and smiles. "Perfect."

"I thought you had a date, but apparently you're going to Sears to take pictures for grandma." Eric remarked.

Gwen looks back at Cory, tilting her head to the side. "Yeah, I see it."

Eric points at her and nods. "She gets it."

"This is for my date." Cory defended himself.

Shawn stands up, looking at Eric. "We wanna make sure he's totally unappealing to this girl."

Eric nods in understanding. "That's good. Play your strengths."

Gwen chuckled, glancing at Cory with a sympathetic smile when the curly-haired boy looked at his brother with annoyance. The doorbell rang and Eric went to open it.

"Oh gosh, she's here." Cory faces his two best friends with a pleading expression. "Guys, stay with me."

Shawn shrugs. "What's the worse that could happen?"

Eric opens the door, revealing Frankie. Frankie steps into the house, looking at Cory. "It is time."

Cory looks at Gwen and Shawn worriedly. "I got a date with Frankie!"

Gwen chuckles, looking at him with an amused smile. "Cor, I'm sure he's just here to pick you up."

Frankie nods. "Miss Kiner's waiting in the car to go to the movies."

"Oh, that's better." Cory speaks in a relieved tone. Then his eyes widen and panic is heard in his voice. "No, it's not."  He faces his two best friends with worried eyes. "Gwen, Shawn, she'll see through this outfit. I'm going out in a bowtie and coming back in a box."

Gwen sighs, standing up and puts her hands on Cory's shoulders. "Cor, take a deep breath and calm down." Cory takes a deep breath and calms down. Gwen smiles, patting his shoulders before taking her hands off and crossing her arms. "There you go."

Cory is only calm for a few seconds before he looks panicked again and he looks at Shawn with a pleading expression, grabbing the collar of Shawn's shirt. "Help me."

"Miss Kiner doesn't like to miss the coming attractions, fuzzy." Frankie said.

Cory lets go of Shawn and walks to the door. "Any last words for mom and dad?" Eric asked his brother.

"Tell mom...Politeness kills." Cory answered. Eric nodded in response.

Frankie gestures for Cory to go outside first. "After you."

****

Cory hasn't been to any of his classes the next day of school because of the fact he was hiding from Harley. In a locker. Gwen had been hanging out with Shawn during Cory's date and since the drive-in was across the street, Shawn suggested they should go check on Cory. Gwen said she would wait there since she didn't want to climb over a fence and she wasn't surprised when Shawn came back with Cory. Shawn explained that he had to bail Cory out since the date with T.K. was bad.

Shawn slips a piece of paper into the slots of the locker Cory is hiding in when he and Gwen walked over to it. "Here are the notes from fourth period."

Cory takes the notes as Gwen and Shawn lean against the locker, pretending that there wasn't someone in there. "Cor, are you planning to stay in there forever?" Gwen asked the curly-haired boy.

"Just slip my diploma through the grate." Cory responded.

Gwen and Shawn exchange a look and they both get off the locker, ready to walk away. "Wait a minute." Cory calls out to them and they turn to face the locker. Shawn unlocks the locker and opens it to show Cory reading the notes Shawn gave him. "Shawn, what kind of notes are these?" Shawn glances at the notes Cory showed him. "You've got doodles and tic-tac-toe and a piece of chewed gum?"

"Great. You touched it." Shawn groans. "Now I can't eat it."

Gwen rolls her eyes, taking out a piece of folded paper from her pocket of her jacket to hand to Cory. "Here are my notes from fourth period that are most likely more helpful than Shawn's." She glances at Shawn with a sheepish smile. "No offense, Shawnie." Shawn shrugged in response.

"Thanks." Cory smiles at Gwen and Gwen returns the smile. Cory looks at Shawn with annoyance. "It's bad enough breathing your gym socks." The three best friend's turn their attention to Frankie, Joey, and Harley with wide eyes when they walked over to the trio. "I was just leaving." Cory sheepishly smiled and got back into the locker.

Gwen and Shawn leaned against the now closed locker, shoulder to shoulder as Frankie put his hand on the other locker to trap them. Gwen and Shawn sheepishly smiled while Harley walked up to them. As Frankie stepped back, Harley pushed Shawn aside and was gentler yet forceful as he pushed Gwen to the side. Gwen now stood on his left while Shawn was trapped between the locker door Harley just opened and Frankie. Gwen didn't miss the fact that Harley seemed to not care if she was trapped or not. She was surprise that Harley was more gentle with her and she was beginning to think maybe he cares about her.

Cory stares at Harley with a fearful expression. Harley smirks. "Come out, come out, wherever you are."

"Look, Harley, it's only fair to warn you-I am wired to explosives in here." Cory lies. He points at Harley. "You pull me out, this whole school blows sky-high." Harley apparently didn't like Cory's comment and pulled Cory out of the locker, causing the curly-haired boy to yelp out of surprise.

Shawn moves to stand behind Harley, who now faces Cory, and Gwen stays where she is, knowing nothing good was going to happen next. "Hey, that's our friend!" Shawn exclaims, trying to sound and look intimidatingly. Gwen watched with a worried expression when Frankie pushed him into his locker.

Shawn nervously smiles. "And this is my locker." Frankie closed the locker and locked it.

Harley glances at Gwen with a stern look. "Gwen, leave us."

Gwen can't help but look at him with surprise, not thinking he even knew her name. But she immediately nods since she didn't want to get on his bad side and she begins to slowly back away. "Got it. I'm leaving." She looks at Cory with an apologetic smile when Cory looked at her with panic. "Good luck, buddy." She turned around, holding onto the straps of her backpack she wore as she quickly walked down the hallway.

****

Gwen didn't go away that far. She just hid behind the corner at the end of the hallway. When Harley walked away, she walked over to Cory.

"So, how it'd go?" Gwen hesitantly asks. "I mean," She gestures to Cory. "You're still alive so I guess it went okay."

Cory smiles and nods, walking down the hallway. "Yeah, it was good." Gwen walks beside Cory as the curly-haired boy explains what happened. "He even said he preferred it if I was the one dating T.K."

Gwen looks at him with surprise. "Wow. Never thought he would say that." She smiles and playfully elbows him. "Just glad that everything worked out."

"Yeah," Cory smiles, nodding in agreement. "Me too."

The two best friends walk around the corner when Gwen stopped walking as Cory continued. She furrows her eyebrows. "Wait. I feel like we're forgetting something."

"Me!" Shawn yelled.

Gwen's eyes widen and she quickly goes back over to Shawn's locker he was in. She unlocks the lock on the locker and opens the locker, apologetically smiling at him. She steps to the side to give him room to step out. "Sorry."

"It's okay, Neve." Shawn assures her, closing the locker behind him once he was out. He smiles at her, throwing an arm around her shoulders as they begin walking down the hallway. "Thanks for coming to my rescue."

Gwen smiles back at him, ignoring the butterflies swarming in her stomach and she wraps her arm around his waist. "Anytime, Shawnie."

A/N okay but gwen & shawn are so cute.
