Chapter 4
I got to class late, sitting next to Frank.
"You okay?" He asked.
"Yeah, I just had morning sickness," I said.
He held my hand gently and I smiled. The kid next to me opened a food container and the smell of pineapple instantly seemed to surround me.
"C-can you please not eat that?" I asked.
He just seemed to ignore me and I felt the sudden urge to throw up now, nausea twisting my stomach into little sick knots. I turned to run to the trash but I couldn't make it in time. I threw up all over Frank's lap. I whimpered, looking at him nervously as the whole class seemed to stop and stare.
"Genevieve?" The teacher asked.
My eyes watered, my face turning bright red. She gave us some paper towels and I helped to clean Frank up. We went to the office and I cried quietly in embarrassment. The office lady sent us home and I let my parents know as we walked into the empty house.
I grabbed a water bottle and a bagel, going upstairs to my room. I brushed my teeth before laying on the bed. Frank changed out of his pants and tossed them into my hamper, standing there in his boxers and t-shirt.
"I'm gonna go do a load of your laundry and throw my pants in with it," he said.
"You're the best," I muttered.
Frank smiled, kissing my cheek before he went downstairs. I turned on the tv, eating my bagel while I watched the screen. I rest my hand on my slightly protruding stomach as I smiled. Frank came up and cuddled up to my side.
"Now I get to go to the appointment too," Frank said.
I smiled. "Good, I would be terrified without you."
"What made you throw up?" I asked.
"The kid next to me was eating pineapples and it smelled so much and he wouldn't put it away when I asked him to And next thing I know my breakfast was on your lap," I said. "I'm sorry about that, baby."
"It's okay, Gee," he said. "I still love you so much."
I smiled, giving him a kiss. We cuddled together before my mom came to pick us up. We got to the doctors and the nurse gave me three full cups of water.
"I have to drink all of this?" I asked.
She nodded before walking out. I drank all the water, whimpering quietly as the taste of tap water began to make me a little sick. Finally the doctor walked in and I whined unhappily from my full bladder.
"Hello, Genevieve, I'm Dr. Colby," the doctor said.
She shook my hand and I smiled nervously.
"And you're the mother, Donna, and you are who I presume is the father," she said
"Frank," my boyfriend said, shaking her hand.
"Alright, can you spell your name for me and tell me your date of birth?" She asked.
"Um, G-E-N-E-V-I-E-V-E W-A-Y," I said. "And I was born April ninth, two thousand one."
She nodded, looking at her clipboard.
"Alright, let's have a little look then," she said.
I laid back on the table, lifting up my shirt nervously. Frank held my hand and I smiled over at him.
"When did you find out you were pregnant?" She asked as she worked on the computer.
"Um, it was about two or three weeks ago," I said.
"You've known for two or three weeks?!" My mom shouted and I flinched.
"Now, we don't want any of that," Dr. Colby said. "Our baby mama can't have that stress so we need to make sure she stays relaxed. Accidents happen sometimes, my first kid was an accident, I had her when I eighteen. So no more yelling at Genevieve."
I smiled softly and my mom looked like she wanted to just punch the computer. She pressed the wand to my stomach and I looked at the screen. I could hear the sound of the heartbeat and I smiled.
"Sounds like it's beating a little fast," Frank remarked.
"That's because it's not one heartbeat beating fast, it's two separate heart beats," Dr. Colby said. "You're having twins."
I looked at the screen and smiled when I saw the two fuzzy shapes of both my babies.
"Oh my god," I gasped.
"Oh god," my mom muttered.
She got the picture printed off and Frank smiled as he looked at it.
"Now, it looks like you're about ten weeks pregnant," she said. "You're almost done with the first trimester. We can't give an exact date just yet but you're gonna be due in early July. And the babies are about just over an inch big and weigh less than half a pound. What are your plans for the babies?"
"They're going to give them up for adoption," my mom said sternly.
Dr. Colby sighed, putting the wand away.
"May I please speak with the parents alone?" She asked.
My mom frowned before she left.
"How are you two feeling about all this?" She asked.
"It's scary," I said quietly and Frank nodded.
"Here, I can give you my card, I'll write my cell number on it," she said. "You two call or text me whenever you want, I know what it's like to be a scared teenager and being pregnant only makes it worse. You two can ask me any questions about pregnancy or the birth or if you're scared at all and just need someone to talk to."
"Thank you," I said.
"Alright, so adoption, you two want this?" She asked.
I looked at Frank sadly.
"Well, it's the best decision," I said.
"That's responsible," she said. "Now, how much weight have you gained?"
I frowned softly. "I think it's been six."
"With twins you should be gaining a pound every week for the first half of the pregnancy," she said. "That means you should have gained ten pounds."
"Is it bad that I didn't gain that much?" I asked.
"No, of course not, at this time your weight can fluctuate and you can lose weight because of the nausea and vomiting," she said. "You should be able to gain the weight back during the second trimester when the nausea decreases.
"But they're healthy?" Frank asked.
"Yes," She said, turning the screen of the ultrasound back to us again. "They have fingernails and hair, working arm joints, forming bones, their organs are fully formed and are functioning, they're even practicing swallowing and kicking."
"Really? They're that healthy?" Frank asked hopefully.
"Yes but I would recommend scheduling some testing during this time," she said. "There's the CVS test, it helps to test for genetic abnormalities. A speculum will be inserted into your cervix or I can use a needle through your belly."
"N-no needle," I whimpered.
"Gee hates needles," Frank said.
"We can use the speculum then," she said. "The nuchal translucency screening will only use an ultrasound to check for down syndrome. Also we'll give you a blood test to check for down syndrome, edward syndrome, patau syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities."
"That's a lot of testing," I mumbled.
"Yeah, there's a lot of testing during the first trimester and second semesters. After these tests it's thankfully better," she said. "During this time I'm sure you're feeling tired or moody or sick."
"All three at once," I said.
She chuckled. "That's normal, you seem to be perfectly healthy. The morning sickness will subside in a few weeks and you're so tired because your body is working so hard to not only grow one but two babies. And a lot of women have their sleep disrupted by weird dreams. It's because of the hormones and the way your mind is processing all these rushing emotions and turning them into vivid and frequent dreams."
"So the me and the babies are okay?" I asked.
"Perfectly healthy," she said.
"Okay, what about going to first hour with morning sickness?" I asked. "I've tried eating the crackers and stuff but I can't get to class on time."
"I'm sorry, maybe you can try talking to your teacher to come up with an understanding," she said. "Morning sickness is pretty much inevitable and it's really annoying and inconvenient."
"When can we find out the sex?" Frank asked.
"With twins it's about eighteen to twenty weeks so you've still got a little while," she said.
"How big am I gonna get?" I asked.
"Well, you're carrying twins so you're gonna get pretty big," she said. "And, you know, because you're having multiple babies and you're so young you may need to have a cesarean birth."
"No," I whimpered. "I don't want that, I-I want a natural birth."
"We don't know for sure, we'll see how you're doing later on," Dr. Colby said. "But it looks like you're on the right track and both you and the babies are doing well."
"A-are we done because I have to pee," I said.
"Yeah, I'll talk to your mom about your vitamins and stuff," she said.
"But I have a question," Frank said, his face red. "Uh, well, c-can we—are we—is it...safe to...you know..."
"Have sex?" Dr. Colby guessed and Frank nodded. "Yes, it is safe to have sex while pregnant but just be gentle and safe, no rough sex. And you might not want to have sex later on in the pregnancy because it can induce labor."
My stomach was wiped off and Frank held my hand, bringing me out to the bathroom. I used the bathroom before I walked out. Frank gave me a soft kiss and I smiled.
"How are you feeling?" He asked.
My lip quivered as I looked up at him.
"E-emotional," I whimpered.
I cried quietly into his shoulder as he held me in his arms. He ran his fingers through my hair and I sniffled as I pulled away.
"Are you using a new kind of fabric softener?" I asked.
"I-I don't know, am I?" Frank asked.
I nodded, a wave of nausea washing over me as I ran back into the bathroom. I threw up and he came to hold my hair back. I sat up and washed my mouth out.
"Okay, I'm not gonna smell your clothes anymore," I muttered.
"Come on, maybe we can go and get some food," he said.
"Oh good, I am so hungry," I said.
"You're always hungry," Frank said.
"Yeah well I'm pregnant, what's your excuse?" I asked.
Frank chuckled, holding my hand. We talked a bit more with the doctor before we were finally able to go and eat.
