the runaways
Baby, I'm dancing in the dark, with you between my arms.
Barefoot on the grass, listening to our favorite song.
-
I was vaguely aware of the fact that my arm was being tugged backwards. I knew it was in an attempt to get me to slow down or stop, but I was too determined to do just that. Just as I approached my destination, I felt another particularly strong tug.
"Scott!"
I finally stopped moving, then turned around to face Mitch. I reluctantly let go of his hand which let him cross his arms over his chest.
"You done?"
"No." He raised an eyebrow as if he was challenging me. A moment later, we both heard music starting to play, the song becoming quite obvious just a bit after that. He glanced over his shoulder at the building before back at me.
"Come on, this is our song!"
"Every song is our song. Its our wedding."
"Yeah, all the more reason for us to go back inside."
"No." Mitch rolled his eyes, then turned on his heels and began walking back towards the building. I sighed then off took after him, grabbing his hand when I was close enough. He stopped moving and quickly spun back around to look at me.
"I wanna dance with you," I told him.
"We can do that. Let's just go back inside and--"
"Just us."
"That's what the first dance is."
"No. Alone. I don't want anyone's eyes on us right now. I want our first dance to be for our memories alone." It was his turn to sigh, but eventually he did take a step forward to close the space between us. His arms went around my neck before he set his head on my chest.
"You're ridiculous," he muttered just loud enough for me to hear.
"I know."
I squeezed him gently before leaving my hands on his hips. I began dragging my hands up to his waist before sliding them back down as we barely swayed side to side. After a couple repetitions of that, I slipped my hands under the suit jacket and put them back on his hips. A moment or two later, I heard him start to hum along to the familiar song playing. I couldn't help but smile then join along with him. I let a word or two of the lyrics slip out, but otherwise remained quiet as it continued on.
Eventually I heard the faint sound of voices and footsteps. I looked up over Mitch's shoulder, then at the people who had joined us. I wasn't surprised to see that it was our parents, as I knew we wouldn't be able to escape them for long.
"Who's behind us?" Mitch asked, noticing the slight change in our position.
"Don't worry about it." However, those words obviously did nothing to convince him. He pulled away just slightly to look at the four new people, yet kept one of his arms around my neck.
"Hi, guys," he said a second later.
"You boys done?"
"Yeah. We'll be back in a minute." Our parents didn't seem overly convinced by his answer, but after a couple of moments, they turned around to go back inside. I watched them until they left our line of sight, but then Mitch quickly turned back around.
"Now are we going back in?'
"I suppose," I sighed. And perhaps I truly would've started moving to go back inside if Mitch didn't step right back in front of me. Before I even had a chance to become confused, he went up on his toes and pressed his lips to mine. I immediately melted into the kiss, but before I could make an attempt to deepen it he just barely pulled back. I pressed my forehead up against his then once again took a deep breath. "Fuck, I love you." I watched as the corners of his lips turned up into a smile and as he pulled even further away. He reached for my hand, then once again tugged on it.
"Come on, Hoying. Can't keep them waiting any longer."
"Grassi-Hoying." Mitch rolled his eyes but quickly continued on.
"My words still stand, Grassi-Hoying." In a perfect world, I might've tried to shoot a comment back at him. However, all I could do was smile and let him pull me back into the building.
