the park
'Cause we were just kids when we fell in love,
Not knowing what it was.
I will not give you up this time.

The school bell echoed through the hallway, only to be drowned out moments later by loud chatter from nearly everyone in the building.
The second the shrill bell sounded, people leaped out of their seats all in an attempt to get out of the room as quickly as possible. I naturally fell to the back of the large group, and it remained that way as I made my way through the countless hallways and eventually out a set of doors that led directly to the over-filled parking lot. It was still littered with cars and people, but I could make out my own near the end of one row, and the person leaning up against it. I had no clue how he managed to get out here so quickly, but he had regardless. He was immersed in his phone, and therefore didn't see me until I was steps away. However, when he did look up, his face immediately lit up. I quickly unlocked the car, opened the door, then sat down in the driver's seat. Mitch copied my actions, but I waited to say anything until he closed the door.
"Hey," I said quietly. "You weren't waiting too long, were you?" He smirked but shook his head.
"I just hurried out here. You're fine." I opened my mouth to reply only to be cut off by an obnoxiously loud pick up truck driving in front of us. We both watched as it left the lot, doing the best burnout the driver could manage. I could have easily laughed at that, but I had more pressing things on my mind.
"So?" I asked, turning back to him. His eyes flitted back to mine and he raised an eyebrow. "Your house or mine?" I clarified.
"Can we go to the park instead?" He asked after a moment of thought.
"School just let out. It might be swarming for awhile." He opened his mouth to reply only to end up shaking his head.
"Sorry. I just missed you." He dropped his head then, obviously disappointed in that fact.
"We can still go," I said. "We'll just need to sit for a little while." He nodded his head once quickly, and with that, we were off.
The park was a little ways away from the high school, yet it was close enough to both of our houses that it wasn't a big deal. It was even closer to an elementary school, which often caused it to be busy during school hours. Upon arriving, I parked near the end of the lot, half underneath the overgrown trees and shrubs. There was still a car or two on the other end near the entrance of it, so we did have to wait a few minutes.
We held our heads low, not really wanting to catch the attention of the few people left. I could have made a joke about that, and maybe I would have normally, but the mood already seemed to be set. I kept my eyes on the cars that were left, just waiting for the moment they would leave. I picked up my head when they did and watched as the last one headed out. The second it was out of my line of sight, I turned off the car, then was making my way into the back. I laid down in the backseat, watching him copy my actions. I smiled as the back door opened and he came into view. He wasted no time crawling on top of me, then closing the door behind us.
Just as fast as he had laid himself down on top of me, his lips came crashing down on mine with no warning whatsoever. I immediately began kissing back, wrapping my arms around him as well. He quickly took control of the kiss and I simply felt pliant under him.
"Missed you so much," he muttered in between kisses.
"It was just a few days, Mitchy."
"Don't care." I smiled against his lips before pulling him back into another kiss.
It felt as if we had been laying there, stealing kisses for hours. And maybe we had been. I never truly had a sense of time when I was with him. Even when we did stop kissing, we rested in the backseat, just taking each other in.
"If we can't stay away from each other for a weekend, what on Earth are we gonna do once college comes?" I asked. The question had been on my mind quite a bit lately, and our brief exchange earlier only made me think harder. He picked his head to look at me. Worry was etched into his face, and I instantly realized I struck some hidden fear of his.
"I don't wanna think about that right now," he said in a more hushed, serious tone.
"You realize we'll have to eventually."
"But not right now." I clenched my jaw and pursed my lips, a bit frustrated at his dismissal of the topic. We were going to have to sooner than later, but he was too stubborn to recognize that fact. Just as I was about to drop it, he let his thoughts tumble out of his mouth.
"College means losing you."
"Not necessarily."
"You're gonna be across the country."
"Yeah? That doesn't mean anything."
"You're gonna be successful. Everyone is going to adore you. You'll have everything you could ever want."
"Only if you'll come with me." He narrowed his eyes. "You mean a lot to me. I wouldn't want to leave you behind." He opened his mouth to speak, but I simply continued on. "Plus, you're insanely talented too. We could make it together."
"Scott."
"What?" He bit his lip before shaking his head. "Look," I spoke after a moment of silence between us. "I'm sorry I brought it up."
"It's fine."
"Mitchy, I--"
"You apologized," he said, something laced in his voice I couldn't quite put my finger on. "Now drop it... please."
"Alright." We simply stared at each other for a moment, which somehow communicated just as much as our previous conversation did. Just as I was about to pull him back down, his attention was redirected towards the front half of the car.
He sat up as best as he could, then was reaching for the front seat. He came back with his phone in hand and his eyebrows furrowed together. Before I could question anything, he was typing away, then reaching behind us for the door handle.
"My mom wants me home," he said quietly.
"Oh...kay," I practically whispered as I watched him carefully get out of the backseat. I could have just stayed right there and let my mind wander, but he was still with me. So it was my turn to copy him, and within a minute or so, we were leaving the park and headed towards his place.
When we arrived, I pulled right up to the curb in front of his house, barely putting the car into park before he was opening the door. He dragged his backpack out with him, slung it over his shoulder, the slammed the car door shut without a second glance at me. However, I waited until he was inside his house before I considered leaving. And even once the front door had closed, I still sat there, wondering how badly I messed us up.
