the concert

Darling, just hold my hand,

Be my girl, I'll be your man.

I see my future in your eyes.

"Dallas, thank you so so much for tonight. You guys have been so incredible.

"Oh my goodness, its such an honor to play here again. I just wanna take this time to... to remind you guys of something. Um, and that is, this entire tour, everything you've seen up on the stage, the past five years honestly, would not have been possible at all without every single one of you."

I walked back into the spotlights at that point, then smiled as I saw Mitch in the center of the stage. The crowd was dead silent, taking in every word that was being offered to them. I knew what they were feeling all too well. Not a day went by when I wasn't captivated by him. I shook my head at the thought, then refocused on his little speech.

"Um, I'm gonna try not to get emotional, but it's just crazy that this many people are here for us. And my first concert I was literally sitting right there." I followed the boy's hand, and sure enough, he was pointing at a seat that he always gushed to me about in high school.

"So, it's... I'm just blown away by all of your dedication and support over the years. It just fills my heart with joy. So thank you so much. If you take anything away from the show tonight, just remember we are grateful for all of you. Thank you. We love you so much." I couldn't help but grin wider as the crowd cheered.

"And, um, this next song is one of my favorites from the original record, and it's called Rose Gold. So I hope you enjoy." With those last words, he turned around and headed for the stairs on my right. I tried to catch his eyes before he went behind me, but the lights went down before I could see.

Moments later, I heard the all too familiar beginning chords of the song Mitch was in love with. Of course I was loved it as well, especially after the past year or so we've had together. When Avi and I had originally wrote the song, I never imagined it would turn into such an incredible piece that he would end up loving so much, but I was so glad he did.

I ended up on the catwalk as the song came to a close. The fans kept singing along, but became even more attentive as I began to address them.

"Thank you for an unforgettable night. This is something we will remember when we think of this tour. We love you so much, and it feels amazing to be home." I paused for a moment as the crowd cheered. "This next song is New Year's Day, and it's about every single time we heard or were told 'no' along the way and now we're here, and... it's just about new beginnings. So I hope you guys enjoy." With that, I turned around and headed up the few stairs towards the other band members. There was a few seconds of silence, but then the lights came back on in full force, and we were starting one of the last songs of the night.

New Year's Day was also a song that meant so much to us, the band, and Mitch and I. We wrote it together with a particular theme in mind, but once again, I had no clue that it would end up meaning this much to us.

The second verse came quickly, which was our cue to walk back down the stairs. Mitch remained to my left for the whole song, so when it came time for his solo, I knew exactly where to look.

Mitch had sang this bridge more times than I could count. Yet it still caused me to turn all my attention towards him much like his speech earlier did. I couldn't help but smile at the boy, especially as the crowd cheered as well.

I could only imagine how many videos there would be of this moment and how many more people would be making a comment about his solo and the look I knew I was giving him.

But I didn't care right now.

I didn't care that we were on stage. I didn't care that we were in the middle of a song. Not when the whole world knew.

Not when he was right by my side.

He must have known my eyes were on him because a moment later he glanced at me out of the corner of my eye. I saw him smirk as he sang the final line of his solo, and I continued to watch him as he closed his eyes and held the note that made me tear up almost every time. I nearly missed my cue to start singing again, which I was also sure would be pointed out some time in the near future. I managed to make it through the rest of he song, but I snuck one last glance at him as the last line came.

"Let's kiss the past away, on new year's day."

As if on cue, the crowd erupted into cheers. I took out my in-ears to get the full effect of the noise, and it only caused me to smile twice as much as I previously was.

"Thank you guys so much," I spoke. They continued to cheer as the other band members thanked them as well. With that, we headed towards the left side of stage to go give ourselves a little break before the encore. I was the last one to walk off the stage and down the few stairs, with Mitch just out of reach ahead of me.

He remained a few steps in front of me, but once we were far enough backstage, he stopped and spun around quickly enough to catch me off guard. I stopped moving as well, but he didn't seem content with that. He took a step or two towards me, reaching out for me when he was close enough. His fingers curled in the belt loops of my pants, and with one swift tug, he pulled us together. Before I could shoot any comment his way, he went up on his toes and firmly pressed our lips together. I immediately began kissing back, unable to do anything but that.

"Get a room you two!" I heard someone, most likely Kirstin, shout just a moment later.

That only made me want to kiss him more, but he was pulling away and giggling first. He turned to face the rest of the band, who all had unamused looks on their faces.

"She has a point." I raised an eyebrow. I clearly did not get any point that she was trying to make. "We can't make out the whole time. It'll give us away." Just like that, he let go of my pants, then was walking away from me.

"So? We're already out... why does it matter?"

"He was also very obviously staring at you for the past five minutes," Kirstin chimed in again. "Would it make that much of a difference?" Mitch turned back to us, a water bottle in hand.

"This one," he spoke, pointing at me with the end of his water bottle. "Needs to learn patience."

"I do? I think you have that mixed up, honey."

"I'm an angel." I stifled a laugh before beckoning the boy back over and wrapping at arm around his waist.

"Yeah, alright."

"If you two are done, you guys can head back out there," a new voice said. The rest of the band smirked, then were brushing past us just a moment later. Mitch once again ended up ahead of me, but we were stopped on the stairs leading to the stage. He was just one step up, close enough for me to grab onto his hips. He turned around to face me, arching an eyebrow in question. I glanced up to him, the single stair making him only an inch or so taller than myself.

For some reason, I couldn't help but wrap my arms around him. I felt him instantly throw his arms around my neck relax in my hold. A moment later I turned my head to place my lips against his cheek, but them I turned back so I could whisper in his ear.

"I so, so in love with you."

He immediately pulled away from me and had his eyes wide. With one look at him, I could see the typical facade he wore for shows completely washed away. I gave him a small smile, before trying to coax him back onto the stage. But even when the rest of the band went onto the stage and the crowd began cheering, he wouldn't budge. Eventually, I gave up on letting him move on his own and grabbed his hand, intertwining our fingers.

"Come on, baby," I muttered before pulling his arm gently. Apparently that was all I needed to do, because he was then following me up the stairs and back in front of the crowd. Soon after, we both ended up on the left side of the stage and were ready to sing our next song. And when we did start singing, I was positive that his eyes were on me.
