Chapter 8: I Meet an Old Friend

The cabin really was nice. The smell of clean linen, sage, and the flowers really gave it a calming feel. I truly felt at home as I sat on my new bunk. I would've put stuff away in a drawer I found under my bunk or on the hooks next to it, but the only things I had were the clothes on my back along with my spear and shield. Suffice to say, I got bored after a couple of minutes.
I gathered my crutches and limped out the door into the sunlight. There were a few people milling around in the cabin area, but most people seemed to be out at activities. As I was making my way past the Hephaestus cabin I saw a girl walk out of the next cabin. Hermes, Cabin 11, I believe Lee called it. She turned away and seemed to be walking towards the area by the lake as well. There was something familiar about her. Her slightly curly brown hair, and slight build seemed very familiar to me.
"Hey," I called, speeding up as fast as I could on my crutches. "Can I talk to you?"
The girl paused, and slowly turned around. A gasp caught in my throat. No, it couldn't be. She was a mortal, wasn't she?
The girl looked just as confused as I felt for a second before a small blush crept up her cheeks, but then a huge grin broke out on her face.
"Still wearing glasses I see," she joked. "What are you doing here, Jacob?"
"I like to think it's my signature look," I laughed, flipping my hair as much as I could. It was shorter though, so it didn't actually do anything. "I could ask you the same question, Hannah. You were the last person I expected to see today."
She giggled, "I guess I've never seen you without them. I never thought I'd see you again, especially after you moved to Manhattan last year." She blushed, and kinda looked away, like she seemed embarrassed about the situation. Suddenly, Hannah's eyes narrowed as if just realizing something. "What's with the crutches and cast?" she asked.
"Oh, these old things," I replied. "I was one of the new campers that came in the other night, afraid I didn't fare so well."
"So that's what all the commotion was about. They won't tell us anything. All I know is that the sound of a loud monster woke up a lot of the camp, and the Big House has been off-limits to pretty much everyone."
"It's probably best you don't say anything then," I replied, thoughtfully. "Hey, I was gonna go down to the lake and watch my brothers and sisters. You want to come so we can catch up?" I asked.
Her face flushed a deep blush, and I could feel myself doing the same in response. Before Hannah could answer a tall guy with sandy colored hair and a scar below his right eye.
"Hey Hannah," he asked, flashing a friendly smile. "Who's this?"
"Oh, this is Jacob," she replied, blushing slightly. "He's a new camper."
"Hi," he said, extending his hand towards me. "I'm Luke, Son of Hermes."
I shook his hand best I could without falling off my crutches.
"So, have you come to join us at Cabin 11?" Luke asked.
"What?" I asked, slightly confused.
"Since Hermes is the God of travelers it is customary for us to take in the newcomers until they are claimed." he explained.
"Ah, okay," I replied. "I won't be joining you, my father is Apollo."
"Hey, that's cool. Well anyways, I'll see ya around Jacob," Luke said as he walked away.
Once Luke was gone Hannah and I turned towards the lake, talking as we went.
"So your dad's Hermes, that's cool," I said to Hannah. "I actually would've guessed someone else since I've only ever seen your dad."
"Hermes isn't my dad," Hannah started. "I'm . . . unclaimed."
"Oh, I'm sorry. I had no idea," I replied. I had no idea how to respond to that.
Hannah got a sad look in her eyes before looking at me. "Your dad is Apollo though, that has to be cool." Hannah said, changing the subject.
"Ya, I guess. It's so strange to be here after so long though." Hannah face me a questioning look, so I explained how I had my dad when I was nine and had been waiting ever since to come to Camp. "Anyway," I ended. "How did you get here?"
"Well, two years ago I was brought to camp by a Satyr that was undercover in our school. You won't believe who it was though, Coach Hedge."
"No way!" I exclaimed. "He was a satyr."
"Ya," Hannah laughed. "That was a weird day."
"Oh man," I said, giggling. "Remember how he used to call us cupcakes?"
We both just started laughing hysterically as we then proceeded to imitate Coach Hedge in all sorts of ways. By the time we reached the lake, tears were streaming down our faces.
We sat down on the dock as we watched my siblings canoe. One turned towards us, and once I got closer I could see it held Lee and another guy I didn't recognize.
"Hey Jacob, glad you could join us," Lee said. "Oh, and this is Zach."
I nodded at him, "Hello."
Just then I heard a familiar clop-clop on the dock behind me.
"Lee my boy, there you are. I'm afraid I cannot find Jacob anywhere."
"Hi Chiron," I said, turning my head towards him.
"Oh, there you are, my boy. You gave me a fright, I was afraid that you had wandered off," Chiron said. "Come, we must get you situated."
"No need," Lee said from the canoe. "I already showed him around and got him a bunk in the Cabin."
"Perfect," Chiron replied before turning back to me. "Come, it is time for you to meet Mr. D."
A/N: I know this one was a little shorter, I really struggled with writing this one. Two shy friends meeting after a year apart, awkward. Anyway, I hope y'all enjoyed anyways!
Have a nice day!
