Ch. 43 - The Father Daughter Dance
Percy's POV
I stood in front of the mirror still unsure whether my wedding tux still fit me. I wanted to look my very best for Selena. Today she had her first Father Daughter Dance and I had never seen her so excited. The school did it every summer all the way up to fifth grade. It was a school dance, but instead of dates (since they're elementary school kids) all the girls brought their dads; there would be games and food and a couple slow dances. I had gone with Zoe a couple years. I wanted to wear the tux I wore to mine and Annabeth's wedding because it was like reliving that great memory with the other very special girl in my life.
I looked over at the clock. It was 5:40.
"Let's go Selena!" I yelled upstairs. Annabeth walked down the stairs and held out her hands.
"Introducing Miss Selena Jackson!" She called out and we laughed together. My little incoming first grader walked down the stairs wearing an adorable white dress with a white collar that had tiny gold hearts on it and a thin gold belt. She had her hair in long blond curls. (go see the picture before this chapter)
"Wow Selena you look gorgeous Sweatheart," I say in awe as she did a little twirl.
"Thanks Daddy," she says smiling at me. "You look perfect too!"
I bowed as she got to the bottom of the stairs. "Your Magesty," I say taking her hand.
Selena giggled. We walked outside and I opened the car door for her.
"Have fun!" Annabeth called out to us already in her pajamas. Luke was at a friends house and Charlie and Zoe were still at camp so it was just her for the night.
"Ok! Bye!" I called back starting the engine. I pulled out of the driveway and sped down to Lincoln Elementary.
We arrived at the school and I parked. We walked in with a couple other girls and their dads around the school to the garden where the dance was being held. It was outdoors but there were still streamers and music was playing. On the left side was some snacks and drinks and I saw some pizza too. I knew where I was headed first.
Selena's friend Bailey called out to her and we turned around.
"Hey Lena!" Bailey said smiling. "Hi Mr. Jackson!"
"Hi Bailey," I said to her. "You look gorgeous." She had on a pink dress with a big sash in the middle and a little flower in her French braid.
"Thanks," she said.
Then a lady with a microphone came on telling everyone to get into pairs with their dad/daughter.
"I'm going to get my dad. I'll meet you back here!" Bailey said running off. I turned to Selena.
"People call you Lena?" I asked her.
"Yeah, it's what everyone calls me Dad," she answered giving me one of those duh looks.
"Oh...I didn't know that."
"Well you never asked what I like to be called. It was always Selena."
"Well, would you like to be called Lena?" I asked her.
"Yes, Dad, I would like to be called Lena," she answered and the we laughed. Just then Bailey and her father Rob walked up and the loud speaker came on again.
"Ok listen up ladies and gentlemen!" The speaker announced. "We are going to have a water balloon toss! We have rain ponchos if you'd like to keep your nice clothes dry if your balloon breaks. The game goes like this! You will toss the balloon back and forth and if it breaks, you must sit down! You are only one balloon! If you can successfully throw it back and forth, you will move on to the second round, except this time you will be a little farther apart. Last pair standing wins! You will also receive a prize! Good luck!" The cheery lady turned off the microphone and began handing out ponchos and balloons with the help of a couple other volunteer moms.
"Ok Lena, pep talk time," I said and we got into a huddle. "This is a water sport, something we Jacksons excel at, but I refuse to use our powers for this ok?"
"Ok." Lena answered and took our balloon. It was a small one, which was a bonus, and it was pink which Lena liked. We were just discussing strategy since The Jacksons also do not lose, when I saw our mortal enemy. It was the Anders, Rod Anders and his daughter Annabelle Anders, and they were walking towards us. Rod and his wife Tiffany were our neighbors and they were always trying to one up us. If we threw a neighborhood picnic, they also threw one, just a bigger and better one. Rod had slicked back black hair with too much gel and Annabelle had big bouncy blonde ringlets. They were rich, very rich, all because Rod invented a computer disc of some sort that made them millions a couple years ago. They were the snottiest group of people including their stuck-up daughter.
"Well well well, if it isn't the Dorks themselves," Rod said and the two of them laughed evily. "So you think you can win this or something?"
"Yes actually we do Rod," I said cooly looking him up and down.
Annabelle walked up to Lena looking down at her. Lena was a very small first grader. "My father says you won't last the first round. I disagreed. I said you won't last the first toss." The evil pair laughed again.
"Oh you'll regret that! We are going to beat you and you're going to be sorry and...." Selena started to say. She wasn't really the competitive type but I saw she really wanted to beat Annabelle.
"Yeah! You better watch out for the Jacksons!" I finished for her. "Now if you'll excuse us we have to finish warming up." The Anders walked away.
"Ok Everybody! Please get into position for the water balloon toss! On the count of 3 you may begin! 1...2...3!"
Selena tossed me the balloon nice and light and I caught it. Phew! I gave her a nice toss back and she caught it. We kept this up until the announcer lady called the round over. We saw the Anders over a couple people but still standing. Darn it.
The next round began and we finished that too. People began to sit down and we continued to keep going. We were on Round 4 when I went to give a toss to Selena but the balloon slipped out of my hand. Selena almost grabbed it before it went high over her head and broke. Just then the announcer called next round. Still having hope I looked over at Rod and Annabelle but they were still standing. They both smirked at us. I groaned.
"Sorry Selena," I whisper to her.
"It's ok Daddy we'll win the next one," she whispered back. "wait why are we whispering."
The Anders ended up winning the water balloon toss and they walked over to us to brag showing off they're new plastic medals.
"Awww are the poor Jacky Wackys upset?" Rod asked in a baby voice.
"Ok Rod," I say. "You may have one this one but we will win the next one that's for sure. Let's do 2 out of three. That will determine the real winner of all this ok?" I stretch out my hand.
"Ok." he says shaking my hand.
"Good luck," Annabelle says smirking her voice dripping with sarcasm.
"Good luck," Lena mocks in a high sugary voice. I laugh thinking about the awful message I'm sending my daughter.
We danced and ate some food until the announcer called out the start of another game. Selena and I fist pumped.
"Ok everybody! This game is called Favorite Things! This is a test to see how well all you fathers know your daughter. Everyone will receive the same piece of paper with 10 questions on it. The girls will write down the correct answer to each question and the dads will write down what they think the answer is according to they're daughter. For example, the question is, Favorite Sport? and then May will write down her favorite sport," she said using the pair closest to her. "Then, her father will write down what he thinks her favorite sport is. The pair with the most correct answers wins! Now can we all the girls on this side of the garden and Dads on the other please."
This sounded easy enough. I knew Selena. Hopefully I wouldn't confuse her with my other 3 kids.
First question: Favorite color? That was easy. I scribbled down pink.
Second question: Favorite food? Oh I knew this one too. Mac 'n Cheese
Third Question: Favorite stuffed animal's/other security item's name? Well Selena slept with 3 blankies every night named Choo Choo because it had little smiley faces on it, yes I know she says they look like trains, Blue because well it was blue, and Flower because it had flowers on it. I wrote down Choo Choo, Blue and Flower.
Fourth Question: Favorite movie? Oh well duh Finding Nemo. Oh wait maybe it's Frozen... I wrote down Frozen.
I scribbled down the last 5 questions pretty confident we had this.
"Ok times up!" The announcer called. "Please find your daughter and count how many correct answers you had. If you have gotten them all right please come over here for the final tie breaker round."
I found Selena and we got them all right!
You ready to win?" I asked pumping her up.
"You bet!"
Unfortunately the Anders were too.
"Ok here's how the tie breaker works! The daughter must whisper the answer to the question I will ask in my ear and then the dad will answer in under 5 seconds! Ready?!" We all cheered. "First up! The Millers!"
About 5 people went and only 1 got the answer right. These were hard questions.
"Next up! Percy and Lena!" Bailey was cheering really loud. The lady asked Lena the question then turned to me.
"Ok Percy," the lady said. "What is Lena's favorite thing to do at the beach?" Oh haha could it get any easier?
"Swim in the ocean!" I answered right away.
"Correct!" she yelled and our friends all cheered. I high fived Selena and we went back into the line.
"Next is Rod and Annabelle!" I crossed my fingers hoping they wouldn't get it.
"So Mr. Anders, what does Annabelle want to be when she grows up?"
"A...uh...a...princess?" Rod asked.
"Wrong! A vet! You are out!" I grinned. Annabelle groaned at her dad. I saw Selena give them a little thumbs up.
It was finally down to 2 of us.
"Ok, for the final round, first dad to answer wins!" The announcer called.
"Ok Mr. Jackson, Mr. Klein, what is your daughters' favorite school subject?"
I waited a second and then remembered. Lena loved to draw and write. Was it art or English? I finally called out,
"Art!" And just as I did Tim Klein yelled out math.
"You are both correct! But Mr. Jackson was a second quicker! Congrats to our winners Percy and Lena!"
I gave Selena a hug and smirked at Rod and Annabelle standing with their arms crossed.
"Yes! Dad you were awesome!"
"Thanks for sharing every detail of your life with me Lena," I laughed high fiving her.
Our friends all congratulated us when we walked over. I guess right now we were even with the Anders. I looked at my watch to find we had about 20 minutes left. When were they gonna get this next game started? Just as I was thinking that the speaker came on once more.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, as we wrap up the night we have one last game to play. It is a dance competition! Last pair dancing is the winner! We will have 4 judges walking around and if we tap you on the shoulder you are out. You are also out if you stop dancing. Remember, you must be dancing with your daughter/dad! When the music starts, you may begin! Best of luck!"
The song Whistle While You Work It (by Katy Tiz) came on and I grabbed Lena's hand and gave her a twirl. We started off with a simple upbeat Jazz number.
"You ready to win once and for all?" I asked her spinning her into my arms and rocking side to side.
"You bet. We are the best dancers here!" She answered giggling as we did some jazz hands around each other.
My stamina was great from always working out but I saw some dads stop and then their daughter were all upset cause they were out. I looked over to see the Anders still in though. They were attempting the tango. The third song came on and it was a slow song so I dipped Lena and we started a simple ballroom dance. I looked around to find that there was only about 6 pairs left. I guess the judges were trying to wrap things up.
"C'mon Dad we got this!" Lena whispered urgently so I stepped up my game.
5 pairs
4 pairs
3 pairs
"Time for the big lift!" I whispered to her. I lifted Lena up and she did a little arabesque and some ballet moved she learned when she took the 4 year old ballet class. The crowd cheered.
Just then one of the girls tripped on her dad's foot and it was down to two of us.
I looked over to see who it was.
It was down to us and the Anders.
The crowd looked like it was split between Team Jackson and Team Anders. Hopefully our side had more people. Lena scrunched up her face in concentration despite how tired she was. I knew we had to win. The song changed to a hip hop number and it became a full blown dance off. Rod and Annabelle took the stage first. They did some complicated lifts and a little hip hop routine of about like 5 seconds but it was in sinc. They must have done this before. Lena and I took the stage next. I did some moves of my own that I didn't know I could do. Lena did a front hand spring and sassy walked right into Annabelle's face and did a sassy snap. The crowd yelled OHHHHH SNAPPPPPPPPP. Rod and Annabelle then took the stage again. Annabelle did some hip hop dance of her own while Rod It was back to us for the final round. Lena did a round off into a split and I did the worm across the floor. My old back is gonna regret that tomorrow but I got a big applause so it's all good for now. We finished with my lifting Lena out of her split and onto my shoulders. Everyone cheered.
The speaker then announced, "Ok, the judges have cast their votes! The winner of this year's Annual Father Daughter Dance Off is...drum roll please! LENA AND PERCY!"
I scooped Lena up in a huge hug. Everyone cheered as they gave us each a plastic gold medal and gave Rod and Annabelle a silver plastic medal. They looked like they wanted the floor to swallow them as they were awarded Losers.
We walked over wkd shook their hands.
"Good job Rob, Annabelle," I said nodding to each of them.
"You too," Rod spat.
"Now we will have finish off the night with our traditional father daughter slow dance. Thank you all for coming tonight and thank you to our volunteers! Pairs, please take your place on the dance floor, and have a good night!"
"My princess," I bowed turning to Selena. "May I have this dance?"
"Why of course you may," she giggled curtsying.
I took her hand and we danced.
"Thanks for the best night ever Daddy. It was really fun doing this with you," Lena said looking up at me.
"Aw of course. I loved doing this with you. I can't wait for next year!"
"Me too!"
We were still dancing through the parking lot, even as they had already turned off the lights and music, just enjoying each other's company.
