Chapter Twenty: I Surf a Tsunami

Chapter Twenty:

**Hi guys! I'm sorry that my updates aren't very long, but that's just how I write, soo.... yeah. I just end the chapter when it seems right. This one, however, should be longer 'cause I've got lots planned. Also, I'm going to be switching POVs a lot in this chapter so that the whole prophecy can be completed. It may be a little confusing, as each couple's struggles are happening simultaneously. Hopefully it makes sense. Enjoy!***

P.S. I was originally going to go through every person's POV in this chapter, but since I haven't updated for a while I'm just going to give you Percy and Annabeth.

P.P.S. This book is not my top priority, so just because I don't update for a while, that DOES NOT MEAN I WON'T UPDATE OR AM NOT CONTINUING THE BOOK. So yeah. Enjoy!

PERCY'S POV

Percy didn't know what was wrong, but he could feel that something was off. Annabeth and him were just sitting in their cabin on the island, munching popcorn and talking, nothing too unusual, but Percy was on edge. He didn't verbalize his fears, though, as he had no idea what he'd say.

He got his answer in the sound of a huge wave crashing against the shore. Annabeth jumped at the suddenness of the sound, and Percy ran outside barefoot after telling her to stay there. It was early evening, but the skies were a deep murky gray.

Way out at sea, Percy could see another wave starting to form. The surface of the water began to ripple and bulge before the wave broke free, foaming with a white crest. Humid, salty wind blew Percy's hair, leaving the moist taste that only a storm could produce on his tongue.

The wave was now an imposing wall of water, a small tsunami. He knew that it wasn't a natural disaster; there was nothing natural about it. Poseidon was doing this, he knew it. He just didn't know why.

"Dad!" He cried into the light rain drops that were now sprinkling his face. "Do you need something? Did I do something?" He felt foolish shouting into the clouds; he could hardly hear his own voice over the sound of the rain and the wind and the wave coming ever closer to the shore. Still, if Poseidon wanted to hear him, he would.

The wind blew wildly in every direction as Percy made up his mind. He had to do something before the wave crashed onto the island. He hadn't tried to control the a body of water for a while, and definitely not with a wave like this, but he didn't have time to spare.

He closed his eyes, channeling all of his energy, his willpower, his thoughts into the water, trying to connect with it and calm it down.

He wasn't fast enough. Before he could get anywhere, he heard a huge roar as the tsunami crashed onto the island, rushing over the sand with such force that it uprooted a palm tree on it's way.

In his moment of horror, the little power Percy had managed to channel had lost its momentum, so he did the first thing that came to mind.

Run.

Because he knew Annabeth was still in the cabin, which would collapse on top of her when the water reached it.

And then, with a rush of terror, Percy stopped dead. He had heard a scream: Annabeth's scream.

And it wasn't from the direction of the cabin, as he had anticipated. It was coming from the opposite direction.

The sea.

He whipped his head around to face the wind and the ocean, and his heart dropped. A drenched figure was waving her arms around wildly, splashing everywhere as she tried to keep her head above the raging waves.

Annabeth.

Suddenly, the fact that he had never channeled water this powerful before didn't matter. The fact that his legs were covered with scratches from pieces of debris pelting him as they surged over the island with the water. The fact that it made no sense at all how Annabeth had even gotten out there in the first place didn't even matter. All that mattered was that his love was being tossed around in the sea foam, and he was the only one who could save her.

He was the on of the Sea God.

He was born to this.

With a deep breath, he began making his way through the water. As he channeled his energy, the ocean parted before him, raging on on either side but never touching him. Soon he broke into a sprint. His legs were stinging and his breath was quickly becoming ragged with the combined effort of running and controlling the water, but he kept going.

When he neared Annabeth, he willed the water to propel him upward. He directed a small wave towards Annabeth and used it to propel himself to her. When she was finally within reach, he grabbed her gently but urgently with outstretched arms and pulled her closer. Somehow, he managed to ride the wave back to the shore with her in his arms. She was unconscious, but her heart was still beating.

When they finally reached the shore, he channeled every last ounce of energy and power in his body to calm the waves. He couldn't smooth out the ocean, but at least he managed to dull the height and force of the incoming waves.

He trekked slowly through the wet sand, passed the drench ruins of what used to be their cabin, until he reached a large bulder near the center of the island. He hefted Annabeth onto the flat top, and then struggled up the side himself. Finally, he collapsed next to Annabeth, panting. He grabbed her clammy hand, hoping she would be okay, when his heart dropped.

One second, Annabeth had been there, and the next....

She had dissolved into thin air.

ANNABETH'S POV

Annabeth jumped as a huge roaring sound echoed across the island. Percy leapt out of his chair and sprinted over to the window, Annabeth close on his heels. Her eyes widened in shock as she looked out at the stormy sea that she was sure had been calm just minutes before.

"Stay here," Percy commanded her urgently as he rushed outside, giving Annabeth a small taste of the humid, salty wind before it slammed the door shut itself.

Annabeth gripped the windowsill as she watched Percy springing through the sand, looking out to sea.

Her attention was directed elsewhere as her surroundings began to transform. The wooden walls rippled as they turned solid black. It filled in the doorways and covered the windows, ceiling and floor until Annabeth was left in a small, humid, pitch-black chamber. She felt around the walls, hoping to find a light switch or something.

She felt something under her hand and she pulled bent down to pick it up. It was a small, thin, rectangular stick.

A match.

Hoping against hope, she struck it a few times against the wall. To her relief, it worked. The bit of light revealed a torch, which she quickly lit.

Her relief quickly disappeared, however, when she turned around. She let out an unearthly squeal at the sight that lay before her. A huge spider the size of a large dog along with countless smaller ones the size of her fist were crawling all over the walls, the floor, the ceiling and....

Percy.

He lay on the floor, kicking, flailing his arms about wildly, but the huge spider was right on top of him, pinning him down. The rest of them began inching towards her.

She instinctively reached into her belt, but she didn't have her dagger. She had stopped wearing that a while ago.

Her next thought was to grab the torch off of the wall and fling it at the spiders.

Being a daughter of Athena, she weighed the options in her head. If she hit giant spider just right, she could probably injure it long enough for Percy to get away. On the other hand, it might not work, and she'd most likely loose her only light source.

She decided against it, but then she started to panic. The large spider was killing Percy and the rest were advancing toward her. She was trapped and helpless. She couldn't outsmart it this time.

Or could she?

Now that she though about it, the situation made absolutely no sense. One moment she had been watching Percy run outside to check out a storm, the next he was lying underneath a giant spider next to her in a tight, solid room.

It couldn't be real. It was a dream, or her imagination, or some sort of message or test from the Gods.

A test.

It made sense; spiders and Percy's death were her greatest fears, so it could hardly be a coincidence.

She closed her eyes, unsure what to do. She told herself over and over that it was just a test, that it wasn't real, but it didn't work.

What else was she supposed to do? She had calmed down and realized if was a rest, so now what? She figured she should try to take control of the situation, but that hadn't work.

Take control... That sparked a different idea in her mind.

"Spiders!" She commanded. "Retreat!"

To her astonishment, all of the disgusting creatures, even the one standing over Percy, slunk back to the corner of the room.

"I command this test to end!" Annabeth yelled. Slowly the walls started melting away until she found herself standing in ankle deep water, surrounded.

She squinted, puzzled. Was it another test? Wasn't she supposed to be standing in the cabin's kitchen?

With a gasp she realized that she was standing in the cabin's kitchen. Something, possibly the storm Percy had seen brewing earlier (which had miraculously already given way to bright sunshine) had torn down the whole cabin.

"Percy?" She called hoarsely. No reply. She picked her way as quickly as she could through the wet, muddy sand and debris. "Percy?" She tried again.

"Annabeth?" She heard his weak reply.

"Percy!" She ran in the direction of his voice, filled with relief.

"Annabeth!" He called when the rock he was laying on came into sight.

Annabeth scrambled up the rock as quickly as her pregnant body would allow and threw her arms around Percy.

"Oh, gods, I had a horrible vision," she mumbled into his chest.

"Me too," Percy said calmly, "but it's all over now. We're both here alive and well." As he spoke, he rubbed her back soothingly.

"I love you, Seaweed Brain."

"I love you too, Wise Girl."
