Percy and Annabeth apocalyptic AU one shot because I don't write enough AU's. 😊
It was quiet. A strange pleasure in New York, the City that Never Sleeps. But, it was too wrong. Of course, the citizens had been evacuated long ago, heading to one of the safer places. Like the Smoky mountains. Away from the east coast, where an all out war was raging. But the silence was still disconcerting. And it hit the soldiers who had lived here before right in the heart.
Percy and Annabeth crouched in an alley, close as ever, holding their breaths as soldiers ran right past them. Percy intwined his fingers with hers, trying not to move as someone shone a light down the dark and dank alley.
"Clear!" A gruff voice yelled, making the two flinch as the person had been closer than they thought. The army moved on, stomping down the empty streets of New York, the rise and fall of their heavy boots in perfect sync.
"Gods of Olympus." Annabeth breathed, clutching her bloodied arm.
"Shh..." Percy backed up, swinging his backpack off of his shoulder, "Let's get this cleaned up."
"I hate guns." Annabeth groaned, "I hate those people. I hate Luke. I hate everyone in this da-"
"Love you too, Wise Girl." Percy cracked a smile, even though the situation was one that did not deserve a smile.
"Are all communications out?" Annabeth whispered as he ripped her sleeve up to her shoulder. Percy swallowed at the sight of her wound.
"Been for two hours." Percy replied, reaching into his medical kit. He pulled out a heavy cylinder that fit into his hand perfectly and sighed, "This'll numb the wound..." He promised, looking into the window on the side to see the clear liquid sloshing from his shaky hands.
"It'd better, or I'll kill Solace." Annabeth winced as Percy pressed the cylinder against her arm, right under the wound, pressing the button on the side. Cold numbness spread through her veins until she could no longer feel an inch of her arm.
"Gods, hurry." Annabeth ordered.
"Yes ma'am." Percy gave her a smile, putting down the cylinder and grabbing some other things from his small medical pack.
"Is the..." Annabeth closed her eyes, "The bullet. Is it still-"
"Shh."
"Don't shush me!" Annabeth snapped back, making Percy chuckle slightly.
"It is- Be still! Gods!" Percy pulled back slightly, "I'm already shaking like a leaf, you wiggling around isn't helping."
"Aw, are you scared for me, Seaweed Brain?"
"Of course I am." Percy responded, looking away. He wrapped her arm in gauze and bandages, wiping away excess blood.
"Thanks." Annabeth shifted so she could look at her arm, "You didn't get hurt, right?" She looked at him in the eyes, her gaze concerned.
"Nah. I didn't run out in the middle of open fire." Percy glared playfully.
Flashback
The air was still and quiet, like always, as Percy and Annabeth crouched at the corner of a building, watching the streets closely.
"Do you think-"
"Be quiet." Annabeth ordered, her voice a faint hum in the darkness. Percy obeyed, instinctively putting his hand on her back and moving closer so they wouldn't be seen.
Just when the two thought that it was clear to go across the street and check out the general store that was suspected to be housing for some hostages of Kronos' army, footsteps were heard from down the street.
"Sweet! Score!" A male voice exclaimed, walking towards the store.
"Wait, dude, isn't this that one store-"
"Who cares? Look! Doritos!"
"Gods, I can't remember the last time I had Doritos..."
The two sprinted towards the store before Percy or Annabeth could get to them, and someone from the rooftop of the building the two soldiers were hiding by opened fire.
Immediately, Annabeth stepped from the alley, yelling at the unarmed Stolls to take cover (They weren't trusted with real guns. They were just the bombs experts.), and shot back at whoever was on the roof.
Her bullet made contact, and a startled yell came from the rooftop before another volley of bullets sped towards the girl.
"Annabeth!" Percy screamed, aiming his gun at the roof as well. He didn't have a clear shot. Annabeth suddenly jerked back, yelling, and tripped backwards onto the concrete. Percy's heart stopped, and he ran straight into the street towards the girl. The person firing from above was definitely dead, they would have picked Percy off as he ran into their line of sight.
Annabeth was cursing to high heaven, a trait that had been passed down from a girl that had lived in the same orphanage as her for a while named Thalia, and held her arm tightly. Blood seeped through her fingers. But she was alive. And that was all that really mattered.
"Gods!" Percy dropped his gun, looking up to see the Stolls staring at Annabeth with wide eyes, "Why are you still there? Get out!" Percy screamed. It would be seconds, he knew, until reinforcements came to take out whoever had fired on the person on the roof. They'd be dead in no time.
Percy swung his gun onto his back and went to pick Annabeth up. "I'm fine!" She gritted her teeth, pushing his hands away.
"You're bleeding out, Annabeth." But he backed up and stood, offering her his hand. Annabeth took it, cursing even more as she stood. Percy wrapped her uninjured arm around his neck, supporting some of her weight as she cradled her wounded arm to her chest.
They stumbled to an alley about a quarter of a mile away before Percy noticed Annabeth's face was pale and she was shaking like a leaf. He decided it was good enough, and they lugged themselves into the alley to sit behind a vile smelling trashcan.
End of flashback
"The Stolls were just trying to get themselves killed." Annabeth shook her head.
"It's my job to be impulsive, Annabeth. Not yours." Percy paused, "But, what you did was brave. Those two would be dead if you hadn't got to them as quickly as you did."
"Thanks?" Annabeth smiled slightly, her grey eyes glittering.
"You're welcome." Percy leaned forward, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
"We can't stay here long." Annabeth muttered, "We have to move."
"Not with your arm numb. You probably can't even hold a gun right now." Percy pointed out, reaching out to press his hand against the side of her face.
"I could!" Annabeth protested, "It just wouldn't be so safe..."
Percy chuckled, "There's the stubbornness I love."
"I'm not-" Annabeth paused then glared at him, "Shut up."
Percy shifted so he was sitting next to her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders lightly and keeping an eye on the entrance to the alley.
"I love you too." Annabeth said softly.
"What?"
"I said, I love you too. You keep telling me you love me, but I haven't said anything back." Annabeth explained patiently.
"I know you love me, don't worry. You wouldn't put up with me for this long if you didn't." Percy smiled over at her, leaning down to press his lips to hers.
"It's been so long..." Annabeth pulled away, reaching up to run her fingers through his hair. Percy closed his eyes and sighed lightly, "Y'know, since the war started. Since we met."
"Yeah." Percy agreed, "Six years is a long time."
The war had started when they were both twelve, and they'd been enlisted at thirteen. They trained together, as the only kids each other's age, and pretty much never left each other's side. Soon, admiration turned to crushes. Crushes turned to falling in love...
"I remember you kicked the general in the crotch because he wanted you to cut your hair like the boys." Percy smiled, "I'm glad you didn't." He reached over and took a golden curl between his fingers.
"No one was going to tell me what to do." Annabeth chuckled lightly, "I remember when you fell off of your bunk and broke your ankle. I came to your bunks every meal time and we played cards and traded stories."
"We have a lot of stories now. Together." Percy pointed out, "Then, we barely knew anything about each other. Now, we know everything." He looked away, staring at the brick wall in front of them. He flushed, "Maybe we can make more stories. In the future."
"What?" Annabeth asked hesitantly, watching his far-away look.
"Maybe... After the war is over..." Percy looked down, "Maybe we can, like, live in an apartment together?"
"Room with each other?" Annabeth snickered.
"Maybe... Maybe we could, uh..." He cleared his throat. All humor in Annabeth's face disappeared.
"What are you saying, Seaweed Brain?" She breathed.
"M-Maybe we could... Be together in the future as well..."
"Percy, say it." Annabeth's voice was small.
"Annabeth, when we survive this war, will you marry me?" Percy asked softly.
There was a deep silence in which the two just sat there, looking each other in the eyes, daring each other to back down.
"Yes."
