Love In The Air (AU) Pt. 1
Percy gave his passport and boarding pass for checking, tapping his foot in impatience. After a while, the woman who had taken it gave it back.
Percy gave her his best smile, satisfied that the young woman blushed, then shuffled down the terminal.
The air hostess and stewarts welcomed him aboard. He walked down the aisle, trying to find his window side seat.
J6, J7, J8 and, aha!, J9.
Unfortunately, the window seat was already taken by a blonde girl. Percy frowned and sat next to her. "I wanted the window side seat", he complained. The girl merely smiled. "You should have come sooner."
The plane was ready for take-off. Messages were sent to put on the seat belt, not use phones, blah blah.
After a while, the plane started to gain speed and ascended. Percy checked the corridor, and when there was no attendants in sight, he opened his phone. He scrolled through the already-loaded images of Instagram. A message came. "If it's one more of those", he muttered, "I'm going to kill the sender.
It was one of 'those'. And by 'those', he meant dating requests. Percy hated those.
"You're not supposed to open that", a voice on his right said. The blonde girl. Her grey eyes were a little intimadiating, but right now, they were amused.
He shrugged. "You see, I'm not really good at following rules. So... Yeah." The girl gave him a wary look, then said, "What 'those' anyway", she made air quotes with her hands when she said 'those'.
"You have good hearing", he informed her. "'Those'", he continued, "are dating requests I get from girls." She gave him a confused look. "I was a popular guy at school. So I get these requests." She nodded.
"I'm Annabeth Chase, by the way.", she said suddenly after a while. "Jackson. Percy Jackson", he said, using the James Bond reference."Nice to meet you."
"Which High-School did you go to, Percy?", Annabeth aksed after a while.
"Michigan High."
"Cool", she replied. "So, if this isn't too much, tell me the story about your high-school life." It seemed like a command rather than a request.
"Well", Percy said hesitantly, "as soon as I entered Michigan High, I was treated like a celebrity. Girls asked me out. I rejected them. I mean, I'm walking one day and suddenly this girl I don't even know comes up to me and asks me out. I give her a polite refusal. It's because I don't know them, but also 'cause they're,like, the queens of the school and think they can control the world. I sucked in studies. I was good in swimming and basketball. After high-school was over, I don't know how or why, I still get requests by unknown people." He gestured to his phone.
Annabeth gave a low whistle. "You know", she said, "you seem pretty good for a guy who was and is popular." Percy grinned at her.
"Oh, I almost forgot to tell you this", he said after a few minutes of silence. "I had a friend named Nico. One day, he told me that he had liked me for a long time. But now, he's over it." Annabeth raised an eyebrow. "You even have boys falling for you? Gee, Percy! That's overkill."
The air hostess came, bringing chicken pies and drinks. Percy and Annabeth ate theirs. It wasn't too tasty, but Percy was hungry.
He finished the last drop of his coffee, and set the cup back with a sigh. There were still five hours to reach Bangkok.
He flipped open his phone and played Colour Switch, a game he enjoyed greatly. After a while, something hit his shoulder.
Percy looked over to see Annabeth's head on shoulder. She was asleep and snoring slightly. He blushed a little. A strand of blonde hair had fallen across her face and he brushed it behind her ear. She looked beautiful. He blushed even more.
Percy hadn't felt this way... Since he'd met Calypso. And their relationship hadn't gone well. They'd both come to a mutual understanding that he would never love her the way she wanted him to. Strangely, even after their breakup, whenever he thought about her, he never felt sad. Instead, had felt elated and relieved after it was over. And he was sure it wasn't supposed to be like that.
He looked at Annabeth again. Maybe... Just maybe she would-
The plane shook violently. Annabeth's head rolled of his shoulder and she groaned. "What the-?". It shook again.
Instantly, Percy was on his feet and was opening the compartment door. The bag was there, the bag he had come with, having a feeling in his gut that he would need it. He sat back and put on his seatbelt. "Annabeth, seatbelt!", he ordered. She obliged.
The speakers cackled, then the voice of the captain, "Dear passengers, we are going through some... Uh, problems. Please remain seated and put on your seatbelts. Thank yo-"
The entire plane tilted to the left and screams rose out. Percy managed to hold on to his bag. The plane went upright again. The lights went off and on. The oxygen masks felt down from above. Some people grabbed on to it, trying to put it on.
But Percy knew better.
He looked over at Annabeth, who looked scared out of her mind.
Thankfully, he had two of the things.
"Annabeth!", he shouted. "Listen, I've got parachutes! Two of 'em! We both can use them to get out! Okay?" She nodded, looking grateful.
"Put your hands around the chair on your front and also open your seatbelt! Fast!" She did as he said, scrambling to hurry. Once she was in position, he opened the bag. It was hard, since the plane was shaking real bad and everyone was shouting. He took out one of the parachutes, tightened his legs against the bag, and struggled to latch it on to Annabeth. It was hard, but finally he was done with her.
Suddenly, the plane seemed to be falling down. Percy almost flew out of his chair. A baby's lifeless body went past him and he almost threw up. "Percy!", Annabeth shouted. "The plane's wing is broken! We're going down!"
"I know, I know", he muttered. He took out the last parachute and gave it to Annabeth. "Repeat the process on me!"
A drawer came out of nowhere and hit his face. He groaned in pain. "I'm done!", Annabeth shouted. "Now what?" He didn't reply back. His face hurt. The screams made him dizzy. The memory of the dead infant went over and over in his mind. Bile rose up. He threw up.
Percy's vision was going dark. He started hallucinating.
Then, Annabeth kissed him.
Did he say that right? I'm still hallucunating, he thought. But he wasn't.
"Listen." Annabeth cradled his jaw. "We have to get out of here. Are you with me?" Percy nodded, his mind clear. "We-we will have to jump out of an exit", he stammered.
Annabeth took his hand. "Come on then."
They got up. A man, still strapped to his seat, stared at nowhere, his eyes blank. Two twin sisters cried together. A man held a woman in his arms and cried ("You can't die, Jasmine!"). Everything was in chaos.
Percy and Annabeth crouched and walked. "If I remember right, there are eight exits. The nearest one is there", Annabeth pointed. They hurried towards it. A window with an 'Exit' written on it. Percy kicked it, trying to break it. Nothing happened. "Damn", he muttered.
The plane tilted. They both went flying backwards. His head hit something. His ears rang, but he opened his eyes and looked around.
Annabeth was not there.
"Annabeth!", he shouted. "Annabeth!"
"Percy", a groan came out from under him. Percy looked down to see that he was sitting on her. "Sorry", he mumbled. He helped her get up. She groaned in pain.
Percy took her by the shoulders. "Are you okay?", he asked. "My-my ankle seems to be broken.", she replied. He helped her walk. They reached the window again. Outside, he could see the sea. They were descending rapidly.
This time, Percy saw a hatch. He pushed it, then pulled it. The door opened. Cold air rushed in and his face throbbed from his previous wound.
"We're gonna jump together, Annabeth. Ready?" She nodded in pain. "3, 2, 1!"
They jumped.
It was definetly the worst thing he'd ever done. His body rotated, and it was hard to think by the lack of oxygen. Annabeth was at his side and she seemed to be having the same thoughts.
"Hey", was what he wanted to shout but it came out as a squeak. "Annabeth!", he shouted again. She looked at him. "We have to eject our parachutes in a minute. Okay?" She didn't reply. "Hey! You with me? Annabeth!" That seemed to jostle her out of her dizziness. She nodded.
"But where do we land?", she asked. Percy looked around. The wind whipped his face and it was real hard to see or think. They couldn't land in the ocean. All this would be for nothing then. Getting eaten by sharks was not on his bucket list.
I have to survive, he thought. I just have to.
That helped him, though he didn't know why. He concentrated and saw a medium sized land of green. "There!", he pointed. "An island."
His luck was good. They were faring well. "Do we open our parachutes now?", Annabeth asked. "Yeah", he said.
The opening of the parachutes made them slower. They were jerked back. "Do you know how to control this thing?", he asked Annabeth. She nodded. Good. Percy knew how to control it, too.
They made their way to the island, now much more comfortable. Slowly. Percy could see the- now burning-plane far away.
He could still see those dying people far away.
So, yeah. Kinda unexpected, rite?
Vote.
