Chapter five: Annabeth

Percy was so FUNNY. He had her rolling the entire class. If this what the rest of the year would be like, maybe life wouldn't be so bad after all?
Nahh it was just one lucky conversation.
That went on for the full hour of class non stop and could have gone way longer if they didn't have other places to be.
That night after saying goodnight to her Dad, who seemed too distracted in his work to even notice her, she went upstairs to do some math homework which was easy enough so she didn't have to put all her focus into it. Instead she thought about the upcoming party on the weekend. She didn't want to go at all, and was considering cancelling, whether Percy cared or not, but then she kept thinking about Mia and how much of a condescending bitch she was.
Nope, Annabeth was going alright.
She sighed finishing the last equation in her homework and packing her school bag for the next day.
It was around 9pm and despite being tired Annabeth didn't feel like sleeping, so instead she picked up a book off her shelf and walked over to her window seat, opening the widow so she could sit in the cool october air. It would be getting cold soon so she had to enjoy as much of it as she could until then.
Snuggling into the pillows, Annabeth opened her book to the page she had left off on and started to read, forgetting about her reality. The book was interesting enough, it wasn't something she would usually read but at least it kept her occupied.
"Umm hey..?" She heard a voice come from outside her window. Startled, she sat up abruptly and looked outside, catching a glimpse of someone in the neighbor's house.
The way the two houses were laid out was kinda weird, because there were times when Annabeth felt she didn't have any privacy. Where the sides of the houses faced each other, two bedrooms, one from each house, were so close together that if both windows were open, a conversation could easily be had, just as if they were sitting in the same room. Annabeth could also see into the other bedroom very clearly and she felt like a peeping Tom sometimes.
"Oh, hey." Annabeth said, realizing who it was.
It was the neighbors kid Piper. Piper and her went to the same school and were in a couple classes together but they weren't really friends. "How's life been lately?" Piper asked, looking a little bored, and trying to start up a conversation. Annabeth wasn't really in the mood but she went along with it anyways, closing her book and setting it on the side.
"Fine I guess, busy." Annabeth answered, trying not to share anything too interesting. She just wanted to be alone. Piper nodded, "samee. This place gets a little boring sometimes."
Annabeth chuckled, it really did.
"How's Mia?" Piper asked, saying Mia's name with so much bitterness that Annabeth almost closed her window for fear of triggering her. Piper and Mia had been really good friends at one point, but then they'd had some kind of fall out and now they were pretty much worst enemies.
"Fine, she's just been kinda annoying lately." Annabeth answered, telling the truth but trying not to make too much of a big deal out of it. Piper scoffed, "I hear she's been all over the new boy. What a...." Her voice trailed off but Annabeth could tell there were a lot of things that Piper wanted to say about Mia.
"Oh," Piper continued, "he's also been all over you!" She looked at Annabeth, wiggling her eyebrows. Annabeth laughed a little, "I think he's just trying to make friends, and I mean he's cool, but he's not all over me." Piper squinted her eyes, "alright, whatever you want to think."
After a few moments of awkward silence Annabeth decided to speak up, "um I think I'm gonna go to bed now... but see you around." Piper nodded and they both said goodnight, retreating into their rooms. Closing the curtains Annabeth stretched her arms before getting into her sheets, ready for a long night of dreamless sleep.
Just as her eyes were closing, she was startled awake by the sound of her phone ringing. Groaning she felt around her nightstand for it, face buried in her pillow. Without looking at who it was she picked up the phone.
"What?!!?" She said forcefully. "Oh my god CALM DOWN Beth it's just me." Mia's voice came from the other end.
UggHHhGHHhHHHhHHhhHH.
"I'm going to sleep Mia, leave me alone." Annabeth said through gritted teeth. Mia sighed, "I was going to ask you for boy advice but since you're being difficult I'll call someone else." Yay, boy advice, meaning Percy advice probably. Mia usually fixated on one boy for a couple months before moving on.
To be fair, Annabeth was a little curious as to what Mia wanted advice on so instead of hanging up she said, "fine what's up?"
Mia laughed and started to ramble on about how cute and sweet Percy was, and how she couldnt wait to take him to her stupid party.
"And like, I know I only met him three days ago or something, but I'm gonna kiss him because life's been a little boring lately, and who doesn't love kissing a hot guy!"
Yeah Annabeth wanted to hang up. "Cool, have fun with that, anywaysss I have to sleep now." She hung up the phone on Mia who had started to protest, and lazily tossed the phone back onto the nightstand.
Anything was more fun than talking to her best friend.
That night she dreamt of a better life. One where she didn't feel like there was an empty hole swallowing her up.
