The day after their daughter is born, Jake is terrified. Amy's practically waddling in, partly from the sheer amount of baby clothes, bottles and toys in her arms, partly from labor only the day before. So Jake is holding their daughter. Their daughter. The word still manages to melt his insides to mush.
She was asleep in his arms. She was in his arms and oh god he was holding her. What if he dropped her? She's too precious and he felt butterflies in his stomach at the mere thought of her relying on him.
His eyes lifted from her and up at the small photo frame he and Amy had left on the kitchen table. It was a dark photo, you could barely see their faces, yet it was one of his favourites. You could see a clear silhouette of Amy and Jake kneeling beside her, kissing little Peanut's bump. They liked to think of it as their first family photo.
Peanut wriggled in his arms as she stirred. Jake had a brief thought of her name, yes they'd officially named her (and he did love the name they gave her) but really, she'd been Peanut to him from the second Amy had shown him the positive test 9 long months ago.
Amy must've uncharacteristically dumped all the baby gifts on the floor because there was no way she could've neatly found a home for it all before slinking around Jake's shoulder to look at her sweet bundle in his arms.
"She's just..." Amy whispered, her hand gently stroking her newborns cheek.
"She's perfect." Jake finished for her, blinking hard so his tears didn't distort his stunning view of his daughter.
"How did we make something so precious?" Neither parent took their eyes off the waking baby, but Jake smirked to himself.
"Well, you see, babe, when two people love each other..." She gently hit his shoulder but her smile never faltered.
Jake sobered a little and continued. "But seriously, Ames, I have no clue how we got so damn lucky."
Peanut squirmed and prised her eyes open.
Jake felt his heart swell as he kissed Amy's cheek and Peanut's forehead. His girls.
