While Jake's in prison, Amy doesn't have a great time.
Scrap that, this is the worst Amy's felt maybe ever.
The squad were great to her and her brothers checked in on her regularly. But she slipped.
The 3rd Monday. He'd been gone for 3 Monday's. She's gotten so used to rolling over on a Monday morning to see him fast asleep, so used kissing him awake. 3 times wasn't enough to get un-used to it.
She rolled over onto the cold side of the bed and hugged his pillow. Blinking back tears from her eyes, she hit snooze on his alarm clock. A small part of her brain remembered that his alarm went off 20 minutes before they'd had to leave the house. But maybe she tried to ignore that thought.
An hour later, when she was noticeably late for work, her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID. Terry, ever the mother hen, checking in on her. She hit decline. At least that might let him know she was still alive.
Charles called. Then Captain Holt. Eventually, she switched her phone to silent.
"Amy? You good in there?"
Was Gina in her apartment?
"Look, Amy, the precincts worried and blah blah but Jake gave me a spare key and I know he'd want me to make sure you're okay." Gina said, sounding unusually sincere. "I'm gonna come in."
The bedroom door opened slowly and Amy heard a familiar creak. It made her heart ache to think of all the times she'd smiled at the sound as Jake returned late from work. She bit back a sob.
Amy felt the bed sink by her feet as Gina sat down.
"Have you eaten yet today?" Gina asked, glancing at the time and then at Amy's face.
Unable to reply, Amy just bit her lip and screwed her eyes shut. Gina got the message.
"Come on, boo, up you pop." Gina moved to put her arm round Amy and help her sit up. "I'm gonna make you some breakfast. You better be glad I'm not Charles or else you'd get squid balls to start your day."
Reluctantly, Amy followed Gina through her apartment.
"Here's a blanket and some tissues if you wanna have a good cry, and here's a 'F.R.I.E.N.D.S' box set and a new crossword if you wanna be distracted." Gina set everything in front of her and then disappeared into the kitchen.
Amy decided to use a mixture of the provided methods and she stumbled through the first episode and a half with a constant stream of tears down her cheeks.
"Oh, babygirl," Gina said as she reentered with a stack of pancakes. "I know it's tough. We'll get him out of that place soon. He and Rosa are innocent, boo, we'll prove it."
Amy noticed the strangeness and rarity of Gina wrapping her arms around her in comfort. Regardless, she leaned into her embrace.
"I just-" Amy hiccuped. "I just miss him so much. And it's so dangerous in there, what if he gets hurt?"
Gina nodded and held back her own tears at Amy's words. "He's tough. They both are. And he loves you. He'll get through it."
"I hope so."
The two of them sat there in tears, pancakes and box sets forgotten.
Amy longed for him to return. She was sure he was the man for her, all she'd ever need. He was her best friend and she needed him home. And she longed for Rosa, her friend. If she weren't in that hellish place, Amy was sure she'd be here helping her get through this, just like she had last time.
Gina longed for her best friends to return. Jake, the boy she'd clicked with since pre-k, her lil' sidekick and right hand man. She also longed for Rosa, the feisty woman with a soft side that few people seemed to see. Gina knew she'd be able to survive prison, but at what cost to her sanity? At what cost to Gina's sanity?
The two of them allowed themselves the morning off, crying and leaning on one-another. Then by early afternoon, they were both prepared to go into work.
"Never speak of this." Gina said as they left Amy's apartment. "But seriously, if you ever need me again, even just for a cry or to cook a regular, edible meal, call me."
"Thank you, Gina." Amy smiled sincerely.
"Don't mention it, Allie."
