PRIYA SIGHED AS SHE WALKED OVER TO SUPERBOY, OPENING HER MOUTH TO SAY SOMETHING — ANYTHING. BUT INSTEAD OF THE APOLOGY SHE WANTED TO SAY, ALL SHE SAID WAS A VERY MONOTONE "CHOCOLATE." Superboy gave her a weird look and for a second she thought she was going to get punched into the kitchen floor, but then he let her pass and ignored her.
She let out a breath she didn't even realize she was holding. Then she stopped herself. Was she really scared of some — for lack of a better term — baby? He might have been stronger than her but she was just better. Well at least she was better than him at fighting, but she'd been training for years. He'd only had a few lessons with Black Canary in the few months he'd been "alive".
Putting on an expertly crafted poker face, she grabbed for the first chocolate thing she could find (which happened to be a pint of ice cream she was sure no one was going to miss), grabbed the spoon and sat down on the counter, right next to Superboy.
"Yes?" He asked after a few moments of not looking at her, a bit of annoyance in his tone. Priya spared a glance behind her shoulder and followed his gaze. M'gann was laughing at something Wally was saying.
Of course, she thought before she could stop herself. Flirty McHotshot at it again.
Returning her eyes to her ice cream, she noticed Superboy's fist curl slightly.
Well that's... interesting.
She knew — hell everyone on the Team knew — about M'gann's little infatuation with Superboy. Obviously they didn't teach subtly on Mars. She had to admit, he was pretty good-looking, just not her type. If she even had a type anymore, that is.
"You like her, don't you?" She whispered, knowing he could hear her.
"What?" Superboy asked, confused. He had probably forgotten she was there. Not her intention at all, but it worked in her favor.
Priya smirked. "I asked if you liked her."
"Her who?" Priya almost laughed. She could tell he was lying even from a mile away with all the tells he was showing.
"M'gann. Miss M. Madame Greenbean."
"She's not a gre... why are you asking?"
"I'm curious. We never talk."
"And you decided to just launch yourself onto me?"
That was when something snapped in Priya, and she angrily jabbed a chocolatey finger into his chest. "Alright let's get one thing straight, Supes. I do not find you attractive in the slightest. Don't you dare try to assume that the only reason a girl would ever want to talk to you is because they're attracted to you. The others might tolerate your naive bullshit but I don't, okay? And don't you dare assume anything about me again, or I'll just kick your ass again."
He went quiet.
Priya sighed, putting her newly free hand on her forehead. "Look I'm sorry. I... don't know what came over me. I'm just used to people expecting things of me and everything that happened with Doctor Fate struck a nerve I didn't even realize was still there..."
"Don't be. Sorry I mean. I shouldn't have assumed... I'm new at this. I don't... I'm bad at it too. The only things I'm good at are punching things and acting angry. Everything else it's..."
"Too much? Yeah, I know. I've felt that way before."
Superboy turned his body to face the same wall as hers, turning his head to her. "Why have we never talked before?"
"I don't know. I'm normally with Rob, Cori, Wally, and now Artemis I guess. I guess we just never had reason to, until I singled you out during the whole competition thing. I'm sorry for doing that, by the way. I didn't expect you to say yes. I've just been really... tightly wound recently."
"Too many emotions?"
"Too many emotions." She chuckled, and saw a flicker of a smile on his face.
"You remind me of someone, you know." She said suddenly, not even realizing she had until she heard the words.
"Really? Who? Wally?"
"My brother."
"Rob?"
"No my um, other brother."
"You have another brother?"
"Yeah just don't tell anyone I told you okay? It's supposed to be a secret. My... Batman would kill me if he knew."
"What's he like?"
"Well he's incredibly smart, foolishly brave, even more foolishly stubborn. He has this little scar on his left cheek from a fight with a stapler, and he used to not like wearing shirts for a few weeks when he was eight. That was a total nightmare." She chuckled, glancing at the ice cream in her hands. "And he loves ice cream. Not any specific flavor just anything he can put lots of sprinkles and lots of whipped cream on."
"He sounds nothing like me."
"Well that's the way he is now. Before..." She caught herself, remembering the night she had met him. The pain and suffering he had been through... the hole he had been digging himself for just a few praises from his monster of a mother. "A few years ago, he was just like you. A bit naive but also always looking for a fight. He had some anger issues too, but those didn't last long. Now he is what he is, but that's mostly because he had someone who was willing to be there for him. Someone who wouldn't make him buy her drugs, someone who wouldn't just leave him in an alleyway to freeze to death..."
Superboy noticed her grip on her spoon tighten, and without saying anything, gently put his hand over hers and helped relax her fingers.
Priya just watched him do it with wide eyes, and then looked up at him when he realized what he had been doing and pulled away. "Sorry I..." Superboy noticed the way she was looking at him.
"Are you okay?"
She smiled. "He would do that too."
"Your brother?" She nodded. "What's his name?"
"Jason. Just don't tell anyone I told you, okay?" Now it was his turn to nod, and even without reading his micro expressions, Priya believed him. She shoved the ice cream towards him. "Want some?"
For a moment, he hesitated, as if she had just asked him to take a shot of poison. Then he nodded, and she slid down from the counter with ease, grabbed another spoon and then sat back down, the pint of ice cream now between them.
Priya watched him take his first spoonful with cautious eyes, wondering if he would bend the spoon in two before it ever reached his mouth. But to her surprise he didn't, and she smiled as his face lit up.
"This is delicious!"
She grinned. "Welcome to the wonderful world of chocolate, Supes."
As Superboy and her began attacking the poor ice cream, she realized something. "Hey don't you ever wonder about having like a human name?"
"A human name?"
"Yeah like something for people, namely us, to call you when we're not on missions."
"Like a secret identity?"
"Yeah, like a secret identity."
"Then no, I guess."
"Can I give you one? I love naming things."
"Sure." Was his muffled reply as he shoved his spoon into his mouth.
She narrowed her eyes at him, peering at him closely. "You look like a Clark."
He looked at her like he thought she was crazy. "A Clark?"
"No wait... Alexander." He shook his head. "No, what about Cloney McSuperclone? You think people will buy that?" She laughed at her own joke, and he shook his head again. For a second she was worried he was mad at her teasing, and then she saw the smile and realized he was laughing.
It reminded her of her father's full-bellied laughs when he wasn't pretending to be anyone but a father who made stupid dad jokes he'd probably found in a book somewhere. The thought made her smile.
"You guys alright over there?" Fleur yelled from somewhere across the room.
"We're good!" She said, failing to fight back a snicker. Superboy followed, and the two of them just spent what seemed like hours throwing name ideas back and forth, each one more chaotic and kooky than the next. She knew it was probably only a half hour or so, but it was nice being the one to break down Superboy's hardened shell — if only for a half hour.
But once she noticed the ice cream was all gone, she realized it was time to stop. One glance at her watch told her it was about time for her to head home.
"Thanks for the ice cream." He said.
"No problem, Cloney." She replied with a grin. "It was my pleasure."
She started to leave but then he touched her arm, and she looked over at him.
"Hey if you ever want to tell someone about your other life, I'll listen."
"Okay then, Bluejay."
Priya realized the nickname slip up and quickly turned to him. "I didn't mean..."
"It's okay, I liked it." He smiled then, and she gave him her own smile in return.
"Nice talking to you, Bluejay."
"You too, JB."
"You can call me something else, you know."
"Alright..." He paused, thinking hard. And then he smiled. "I think I'll call you Rose."
"Why is that?"
"Because you kind of smell like roses." That just made her smile harder.
"Thanks."
Wally zipped over to her on her way out, slinging his arm over her shoulders before she could make it to the Zeta Beam. "I saw you talking to Superboy. I didn't know he could laugh."
"Yeah me either. And why do you care, are you jealous?"
He scoffed. "Jealous? Me? Never."
She rolled her eyes, then remembered something and stopped walking. "What were you and Fleur even fighting about anyways?"
"Just some stupid things I said."
"Ah there we go. I knew it had to be your fault." Wally stuck his tongue out at her, to which she just rolled her eyes before quickly doing the same to him.
"Apparently she doesn't like roses." He said after a beat. "Almost as much as you love them." She knew just by looking at him that there was more to the story between the two, but she also respected both Wally and Fleur enough not to pry. Then she realized what he had said about her loving roses, and grinned teasingly.
"Really? I didn't know you cared that much to notice, Wallace."
"Of course I did. I am your best friend, after all." For once, she was just so happy to be back to their usual banter — no shapeshifting aliens for him to flirt with, no Dicks or Coris for either of them to joke around with, no Fleurs for him to fight, and no incredibly gorgeous blonde archers to make things confusing — that she didn't care about the pang in her stomach after he called her his best friend. Most days, she would curse that part of her for wanting more. Today, she didn't care. At least not yet. Right now, she was just happy to have her Wally back, even though it felt like he'd never left.
"I thought Dick was your best friend."
"You're both my best friends. Even though I did know him first."
"Yeah, sure we are." She said with another eye roll. That was when she remembered she had no idea where her brother was. "Where's Dick anyways?"
"Last I checked he was sparring with Cori, but I don't know what happened to him after that."
"If he's home, I'll ask."
"So are you and Supes friends now?" Wally asked, the sudden seriousness in his tone surprising her. She glanced back at Superboy, who caught her gaze and waved. She didn't hesitate to wave back.
"Yeah, I think we are."
'' Cassie's ramblings! ,,
this spawned from me realizing that Priya & Connor don't really interact much in Young Injustice (at least not that I can remember lol) and me wanting to write something after the newest chapter. which includes Priya kicking his ass in a little "competition" so to speak, if you didn't gather that from the dialogue. also I know Connor's probably extremely OOC just enjoy him as he is in this okay?
credits to Cass for writing the amazing chapter (and fic) that inspired this oneshot bc it was amazing & if you haven't read the chapter or the fic please do it's literally the best young justice fic I have ever read.
and credits to these amazing ppl bc I did not create their amazing OCs & will not take credit for them bc I'm not that kind of person
Fleur Isley belongs to Cass ( dickgraysonsrobin )
Cori Rigby belongs to Spencer ( teddysnivison )
& ofc there's the rest of the amazing Young Injustice Team I did not mention in this oneshot but may in others 👀👀
Pandora Marwood ( FanofAdiFishman )
Karina Nguyen ( crownqueenwriting )
& Andrew Curtis ( BeetleIsLonely24-7 )
no I definitely didn't just tag everyone so they all read this pfft — but I hope y'all don't mind the tags. if you do I'll remove them no problem
hope you guys enjoyed what will hopefully be the first of many Young Justice/Young Injustice themed oneshots. any ideas for things y'all would like me to write about?
