What is Racism?(*)
A/N: This is my first one shot book for Pentatonix! I made another one but deleted it, lol. Requests are open! Nothing sexual, please. If you see this(*), then that means the oneshot will be really sad and depressing. I'll also out down trigger warnings at the beginning. Let's get started!
~~
(WARNING: Violence, racism, death)
Avi and Kevin Olusola were happily married with three adopted children, all at the ages of six, nine, and ten. The family lived in a nice, safe neighborhood were violence was a mere issue. Anybody of any color, race, sexuality, or gender felt protected in the environment. The married couple agreed that the location they were at was safe for their children and wanted to stay there until they went off to college.
The family was a small one, too. The dads, Avi and Kevin, adopted three children called Scott, Kirstin, and Mitchell. The children had really depressing reasons why they got adopted. Scott's parents died in a car accident when he was only three months, Kirstin's, or Kirstie, mother was single and unable to take care of her, and Mitch's parents were teenagers when he was born and no choice but put him up for adoption. The children all knew about their backstories and former parents. Although saddened by the reasons why their parents were unable to take care of them, they still loved their dads like they were their actual parents. The family is the happiest family in the block too. Everybody smiles at them whenever they go out or whatever. Everybody was envious of them.
~~
It was a Monday night when nine year old Kirstie looked at her father Kevin and tilted her head. Her brothers were doing their homework silently while their other father Avi helped them. She stared at her skin, Avi and brothers' skin, and then Kevin's. What she said made all heads turn towards her.
"Daddy, what is racism?" She asked innocently, her hazel eyes showing a gleam of curiosity. Kevin looked down at her and looked up at Avi. Avi was trying his best to find a correct answer." Is it a bad word? I'm sorry. Do I have to put a quarter in the swear jar?"
"No, hon," Kevin answered and Kirstie let out a sigh of relief. She was saving money for a new Barbie doll." Racism is just a hard subject for Daddy."
"Why?" She asked, interested. Scott and Mitch got up from the table and began to look at Kevin with innocent eyes." Why is a hard subject? Is it like math? Did you get a bad grade in it?"
"No," Kevin answered, laughing. He then looked at his children with a somber expression." Do you guys notice how my skin is darker than yours and Papa's?"
The kids shared a look and stared at their skin color and Avi's. Their fair skin was quite the contrast against Kevin's. They nodded, directing their stares back at their father.
"Well, racism is pretty much when somebody hates somebody else for their skin color or race," Kevin began and the three kids gasped sadly. Why would anybody hate their daddy or people like him? "It's when you show disgust towards a person of color because of their nationality. Many people have died because of it; however, people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Ruby Bridges, and many others fought against racism. They refused to be brought down because of the fact they have dark skin. Racism is a scary thing that should never be used to hurt someone. Does that make sense?"
The trio all nodded their heads, inspired by their daddy's words. They will never be racist towards anyone, never. Kevin smiled at them and hugged them close, never wanting to let go. Avi smiled warmly at the sweet sight. He them cleared his throat and his family looked at him.
"Kids, you need to finish your homework," Avi began, making his children groan and he began to laugh. Kevin shook his head playfully." It's almost dinnertime and you guys need to eat in order to grow."
"Papa?" Mitch asked and Avi turned towards him. He smiled at his Papa, showing his two front teeth missing, and looking quite adorable." What's 2+2?"
"You know that," Avi commented, shaking his head. Mitch began to giggle." Get to work."
All the kids obeyed and finished their homework as fast as they could. After their parents signed their homework logs, dinner was finished, baths were taken, and teeth were brushed, they went straight to bed. The parents went into Scott and Mitch's room, giving them their good nights.
"Sleep tight," Avi said, kissing the top of Mitch's head. The youngest family member let out a giggle." I'll make sure there aren't any monsters in your closet."
"There aren't," Mitch responded. He lowered his voice so only Avi can hear." The tooth fairy scared them away."
"They did now, did they?" Avi questioned happily and Mitch nodded. Avi and Kevin taught Scott, Kirstie, and Mitch that the tooth fairy could be a boy or a girl so the children began to use 'they' and 'them' when the tooth fairy was brought up( even though Mitch was the only one who still believed in them). "Good night, Mitchy."
Mitch smiled up his Papa and cuddled into the pillow, closing his eyes. Kevin was talking to Scott, who seemed sad. Avi saw the sight and frowned as he walked to his oldest son's bed, sitting down.
"Dad, why is racism even real?" He asked, staring at Kevin. Kevin stared at Avi, who sighed sadly." It's not fair."
"I know, Scott," Kevin replied. He then ran his hand through the blonde hair." I don't like it either. Don't get worked up on it too much though, okay? Everything is fine. This neighborhood is safe. Sleep tight, okay? Good night."
Scott mumbled a good night to both parents and turned off his lamp. Kevin and Avi got off his bed, letting him stretch out his long legs. Kevin turned on Mitch's JiJi nightlight, kissing his other son's forehead. Avi waited for him by the door and closed it quietly when Kevin exited. They went to Kirstie's room and smiled at each other when they saw she was asleep with a Sweet Valley book in her hand. She loved the adventures Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield shared. Kevin put a bookmark in the place she left open and placed it on her nightstand. He tucked her in and turned off her lamp. He kissed her forehead and looked back at Avi who was staring off into the distance. Kevin sighed quietly as he left Kirstie's room.
"What's the matter?" He asked immediately and Avi finally let the tears he was holding back after Kevin's explanation of racism. Their kids hated seeing their parents' cry so if they ever did cry, they did it without the kids knowing." Babe, what is it?"
"Racism," Avi replied and Kevin let out a sound of realization. He looks up at his husband of fifteen years." I know we don't face it here, but we will face it everywhere else. I hate that. The kids will never understand."
"I know," Kevin replied and looked at Avi. His green eyes were somber." Let's not worry about it, okay?"
Avi nodded as they walked off to their shared bedroom. Tonight was a long night and everybody deserved to rest.
TEN YEARS LATER
Nineteen year Kirstie pulled up to the small house, smiling. It felt nice to be home. A year at college that was a long way from home made her homesick. She was engaged to her longtime boyfriend Jeremy and couldn't wait to tell anybody. Scott also got engaged to his longtime boyfriend Alex and their wedding is supposed to be next week, which is why she came down. Mitch, being three years younger, was not interested in anybody. He recently came out after his fifteenth birthday, with the help of Scott. He went through a tough time discovering himself but coming out led him to a more confident person and Scott and Kirstie could not be anymore happier for their baby brother. She got out of her car and went up to the door. She knocked and instantly heard the soft footsteps of someone. She giggled when she realized it was Mitch, who scolded his cat Wyatt when he tripped him. Mitch opened the door and smiled instantly. He quickly hugged his older sister, making her laugh.
"Kirstie, I missed you so much," he gushed, making Kirstie smile. She missed him too." How was college? Is it hard? Am I going to hate it? I hope I don't."
"Mitchell," she scolded softly, making him stop." I've been here for about three minutes, chill. College is great, it's challenging at times, depends, and you won't."
"Good," Mitch replied, smiling. He bent down to pet Wyatt." Scott is going to be here in a few! I have to clean up our room."
"You still consider it your guy's room?"
"Of course. He's still my brother. You would do the same if you shared a room with somebody."
Kirstie shrugged as she texted Scott. The soon-to-be groom texted her constantly about his wedding and how he wants it to perfect. She smiled when she realized that all three of them were pretty much perfectionists, a trait they all picked up from their parents. Speaking of parents, her dads were nowhere to be found.
"Mitchy," she called and he responded back with a 'yeah'." Where's our dads?"
"Papa went to get some stuff for Scott's wedding," Mitch started off. He then looked down." Daddy is talking to somebody."
"Who is this somebody?" Kirstie asked, amused. Mitch kept staring at the ground." Tell me! I'm interested now."
"My boyfriend's parents."
Boyfriend. A friend that is a boy. A boy that is a friend. Kirstie squealed at the thought of her baby having a boyfriend.
"Is he cute?" She asked and Mitch shook his head. She then frowned." Why do you have a boyfriend if you don't find him cute? That's rude, Mitchell Coby Michael Olusola."
"He's an racist jerk, that's why I don't find him cute," Mitch reprimanded. He then stared up her, the both of them remembering the talk their daddy gave them at six and nine."Let me finish my statement, Kirstin Taylor Olusola."
Kirstie was about to respond with a snarky remark when the door opened and Scott was standing right there with Alex and Avi behind him. His younger siblings looked at him surprised when he stood there. All was quiet when Scott opened his arms and smiled at his siblings.
"Hug me, you little turds," he commanded playfully and they ran to hug their brother. They missed him so much." How are my favorite siblings doing?"
"Good," Kirstie responded, happily. She stared at her papa, who was smiling proudly at her." Hi, Papa."
"Hey, munchkin," he responded, going up to his family. He realized how fast his children were growing up. His daughter just finished freshmen year at college and his oldest son was getting married. His youngest son will be graduating in a year or so." I missed you so much."
Kirstie smiled up at him when she saw that Scott and Mitch left the hug and were talking animatedly about something. Mitch got a text from somebody that made him wide eyed. Scott got that quickly and stared at him worriedly.
"What's wrong, Mitchy?" Scott asked, putting his hand on his younger brother's shoulder, which was shrugged off quickly. Mitch then looked up at Avi.
"Papa, I need to borrow the car, right now."
Avi handed him the keys cautiously and Mitch quickly grabbed them. He ran out of the door. Kirstie stared at Scott who was shocked as well. Alex seemed stoic while Avi was worried.
"What was that?" Alex questioned, staring at his fiancée. Scott shook his head." We need to follow him!"
Everybody nodded and quickly ran to Scott's car and followed Mitch was going faster than usual. Something was wrong and they were going to find out.
~~~
Mitch stopped at a white suburban house, getting out of the car nervously. His soon-to-be ex boyfriend was punching in his dad in his face. He quickly ran to them and stood in front of his dad, falling to the ground when a fist hit him across the face. He felt himself being lifted up and his boyfriend's demonic eyes stared back at him.
"Terry," he begged, wincing at the pain that was being out on his arm." This is my dad. I love him. Stop."
"Why should I?" Terry asked, finally breaking Mitch's arm. He let out a scream of pain." He's an illness upon the world! He is a disgusting blackie who deserves to die. Maybe I should kill you!"
"Mitch," Kevin stated and Mitch looked up, tears running down his face from the pain." I want you to leave. Now."
"Daddy," Mitch said, shaking his head. He was not going to let his dad die." Dad, no. I'm not going to let you die."
"Mitch, it's okay," Kevin reassured. Terry took out a gun." Leave, now!"
Mitch shook his head and let a whimper when Terry pointed the gun at him. He shut his eyes as he fired but felt no pain. He opened his eyes as he saw blood that wasn't his. He let out a scream when he saw Kevin bleeding from his chest and back. He looked a Terry, who looked satisfied.
"You killed my dad," he yelled, standing up. He heard footsteps from behind and multiple gasps." I hate you! Why did you do that?"
Terry smirked and walked off, throwing the gun. He pushed Scott out of his way, who was staring at his dad's battered body. His dad was dying and there was nothing to do about it. Kirstie let a sob as she hugged Scott, who was crying himself. Alex shook his head as he felt tears gather in his eyes. Avi was in shock. He was seeing his husband of twenty five years die.
"Papa," Mitch said, staring at him. Avi looked in his direction." I'm sorry."
"It's not your fault, buddy," he whispered, hugging his son close to him. He flinched at bit when Mitch let out pained gasp." He broke your arm?"
Mitch nodded and went down to his father. Kevin managed to roll on his back and stare up at his family, who gathered around him.
"Daddy?" Kirstie let out, tears running down her face. Kevin grasped her hand." I'm getting married. Jeremy proposed."
"That's amazing, hon," Kevin replied, smiling. Kirstie nodded and smiled, despite her tears." Scott, you're going to get married."
"And you're going to be there," Scott answered, letting his tears run down his face. He grabbed his father's arm softly." You're going to walk me down the aisle with Papa and you're going to cry when you do."
"I know," Kevin replied, his speech getting slower. Scott quickly put his head onto Alex's neck, letting out pained sobs." Take care of my son, please?"
Alex nodded as out his arm around his fiancée's shoulder. Kevin then stared at Mitch, who was the most emotional. His ex boyfriend is ending his father's life.
"I'm sorry I won't live to see you graduate, go to college, get proposed, get married. I'm so sorry, Mitchy," Kevin stated, making his son let out shuddery sobs. He grabbed his arm that wasn't broken and gripped as tight as he could. Mitch gently wrapped his hand around Kevin's arm." I'll watch it all in Heaven, okay? This is not your fault. Terry was crazy."
"Okay," Mitch answered, his sobs limiting his speech. He kissed his father's forehead." I'll miss you, Daddy."
"I'll miss you too, Mitchy," Kevin responded. He then turned to Avi." Twenty five years, uh? I'm surprised you didn't get sick of me."
Avi let out a laugh despite the tears running down his face. He grasped the tender hand that he loved holding so much.
"Watch our kids, please," Kevin begged and Avi nodded, looking at all his kids. They were all sobbing." I...love...you."
"I love you, too."
Kevin finally closed his eyes, letting peace take over him. His family grieved instantly. Their father was gone...because of racism.
FIFTEEN YEARS LATER
Thirty four year old Kirstin Taylor Lewis held the hand of her five year old daughter Mariposa Rosa Lewis. Thirty five Scott Richard Kirk was followed by his eight year old Connor Ryan Kirk. Thirty one year Mitchell Coby Michael Wright was holding his two year old daughter Vivienne Joanna Wright. They stopped in front of two graves. They shared a look with each other and let their children sit down.
"Happy anniversary, Daddy and Papa," Kirstie said, smiling. She missed them dearly. A year after Kevin died, Avi couldn't move on. The doctors said he died because of an intense heart problem, but the siblings all agreed that he died of broken heart." We miss you."
"Alex and I are having another kid," Scott piped up. Connor looked up at excitedly." We're going to have a girl."
"I'm a doctor," Mitch stated excitedly." Travis and I are planning to move into our old home. I want Vivienne to be in the place where I grew up at."
The siblings stared at the graves when Connor looked up.
"Daddy?" Connor asked and Scott nodded. His son sighed as he stared back at graves." How did they die?"
Scott looked at his siblings, looking for words to say. Mitch let out a sad sigh. He sat down next to Vivienne, who went into his lap.
"Grandpa Kevin died because of racism and Grandpa Avi died from a broken heart."
"What's that?" Mariposa asked. She was interested now.
"Racism is something that ends in someone dying because of it and somebody dies because of a broken heart. Never, ever be racist."
The younger kids nodded as they stared at the graves. At that moment, they promised to never to be racist. They don't want somebody to die because of racism and somebody else to break from a broken heart.
