What Happened Then
A/N: This one-shot will probably be the most triggering. This will be based on the one-shot 'Meeting the Family'. Read that first if you are interested. Again, this is super triggering, so please be careful.
(WARNINGS: child abuse, violence)
The drive to Visalia was loud. Music is blaring from the radio and two different conversations are going on. Avi and Kevin, the husbands, are talking about treatments for Avi. Recently, he was diagnosed with kidney failure and he had to dialysis. Having three children under the age of ten was and is not easy so the two parents decided to send them to their Aunt Esther's for the summer, which they were excited about.
Kirstin, age eight, and Scott, age nine, were fighting over who the better singer was; Mariah Carey and Beyoncé. The two kids love music and hope to study music one day! Scott, the oldest, is possibly the most outgoing kid you'll meet. He is also sweet yet clumsy so band aids were always on him. Kirstin, who a bit more quiet than Scott, acted like she was never shy. She loves talking to people. The two continued to fight, making their five yet old brother watch them quietly.
The five year old is Mitchell, Mitch for short. He is the shyest yet kindest person you'll ever meet. He always hid behind his parents when they talk to people and looked down at his feet when people talked to him. He rarely spoke, but when he did, an adorable and squeaky yet quiet voice came out. His parents are deciding whether or not to put him into kindergarten or to homeschool him because of his shyness. One time, he cried because somebody asked him if he wanted a sticker and he didn't know how to respond to it. The question was asked four more times until Mitch finally looked up at Avi and began to sniffle, tears running down his sweet face. Poor thing wanted to go home and play with his toys so he didn't have stay any longer.
The drive itself was actually pretty good...if everybody stayed quiet. The fighting between Kirstin and Scott got louder, which made it seem like the music got louder, until Kevin stopped the car by the gas station that Esther will pick up the kids. The music got turned off and Kevin turned back, glaring at his children. Kirstin and Scott did not stop. They refused to! Then suddenly:
"BE QUIET! YOU GUYS ARE SO RUDE! DO YOU HAVE ANY RESPECT?! HUH? YOUR AUNT ESTHER WILL BE HERE ANY MINUTE NOW AND YOU ACT LIKE THIS?! SERIOUSLY?!"
The children stopped. Whenever Kevin said something like that or yelled, he meant business. The kids shut up, looking up innocently at their angry father. Mitch, not knowing that Kevin was actually talking to his older siblings, began to tear up, which eventually turned into quiet sobs. Avi, who was still in shock of his husband's outrage, heard his youngest son's sobs and felt his heart break. He turned around, seeing his small son wipe his eyes and continue to cry. He's closest to his parents( both in the car and in general) so Avi grabbed his hand gently, his green eyes staring at him lovingly.
"What's the matter, Mitchy?" Avi asked, making his son look up at him, his brown eyes full of tears. Another round of tears came rushing down as let out another sob. "Baby, it's okay. What's the matter?"
"Daddy yelled at me," Mitch finally admitted, sobs coming out once in a while. Kevin's posture then sunk and he turned towards his son, frowning. "I'm sorry, Daddy. I'll be quieter."
"I'm not mad at you," Kevin admitted softly, squeezing his son's small hand and smiling when he tried to squeeze. He looked up at his older children who looked ashamed of their actions. "It's your siblings I was talking about. Now, let me see that Mitchy smile. Come on, Mitch. Where's that Mitchy smile?"
It took a while to persuade him, but Mitch finally let out a smile, despite the tears that are running down his face. His cute little dimples stood out, making his smile seem bigger. His family calls it the 'Mitchy smile' because whenever they were sad, he smiled at them and it made them feel better.
"I love you, Daddy and Papa."
"We love you too, Mitchy."
"So very much, baby."
It took about five more minutes until Esther pulled up, a man next to her. He has sandy blond hair and gray eyes. He's clean shaven and wearing clothes that were covered in soot and dirt. His long legs showed that he had to be at least Kevin's height. The kids got excitedly out, hugging their aunt. The parents smile lovingly.
"I don't know when I will be done," Avi admitted quietly to his older sister, who nodded in response. Mitch is in her arms and playing with her hair. He's super tiny and skinny so it wasn't hard to pick him up or hold him. "Make sure that Kirstin and Scott stay out of trouble. Make sure that Mitchy goes to sleep at a decent time. Also, if he begins to cry because of talking to someone he doesn't know, take him home and sing him 'You Are My Sunshine'. He loves that song. He's also really shy so I apologize if he doesn't really speak."
"That's okay,"Esther nodded once more, smiling when her youngest nephew hugged her around her neck. The man, who Scott and Kirstin were talking to, glared a bit at Mitch. He didn't like him. Why do they have to take care of a socially deprived child? "Carson, that man over there, is my boyfriend. He is so excited to see the kids."
"Well, we're leaving now," Kevin announced, looking at his kids. Kirstin and Scott ran up to him, hugging him tightly around his waist. They were careful of hugging their Papa because they knew how sick he is. They got their bags and jumped into their aunt's car, ready to be there the entire summer. Kevin smiled at Mitch, whose head was Esther's shoulder. He was about to fall asleep. "Bye, Mitchy. I'll miss you."
"Bye, Daddy," Mitch responded, snuggling more into his aunt's shoulder. He let out a kitten-like yawn, making Esther say 'aw' quietly to herself. "I'll miss you too."
The two dads waved goodbye and they were ready to leave. Nobody knew what will happen this summer to their sweet Mitchy and nobody knew what Carson is capable of.
~~~
Mitch was the first one to wake up. He got up out of his bed, careful not to wake up his siblings. His clothes were still a bag and his siblings' clothes are put away neatly because, unlike him, they knew how to put clothes away. He tiptoed into the kitchen and stopped when Carson was standing right there. His arms are crossed and he looks like he was about to hurt someone.
"You didn't put your clothes away," Carson commented, making Mitch look down. How was he supposed to answer? "LOOK AT ME!"
Mitch suddenly looked up and looked down. Making eye contact is one of his biggest fears. Before he knew it, a strong hand grabbed his chin. It was Carson and he gripped Mitch's chin tighter, making him cry out.
"You look at me when I talk to you," Carson yelled, removing his hand from the small chin. Mitch was about to apologize when he suddenly feel to the ground, his cheek in pain. "You didn't put your clothes away. You know what happens to little boys who don't listen? They get punished."
Mitch got confused and whimpered when Carson kicked him. He covered his side quickly, but Carson grabbed his arms and punched him in the stomach, making him cry out. He felt soft piece of fabric go into his mouth, feeling defeated. Punches were going all over his little body. Tears ran down his face as Carson unbuttoned his shirt and grabbed a knife.
"Take a deep breath!"
The tip of the knife entered his skin and began to leave cuts. Mitch screamed with no avail. After a few more minutes, Carson was done. He grabbed Mitch's hair, making him hiss in pain.
"We're going to have so much this summer."
~~~
Mitch sat on the counter and kicked his legs back forth. It has been a week since the incident occurred. The young boy couldn't understand what was going on. When he and his siblings got punished, which he never did, they got timeouts or got sent to their rooms. A knife was never used on them. Esther smiled up at him when he quietly replied with a hi.
"Hi, Mitchy," Esther replied, hugging her youngest nephew. He repeated the sweet gesture. "Are you tired?"
Mitch shook his head and jumped off the counter, not realizing his glass of milk was on the counter. It shattered, making Carson run in. Kirstin and Scott are in the living room watching some random show, playing with their new toys Carson got them and 'accidentally' didn't get Mitch anything. Carson smiled sweetly and looked at the broken glass.
"Esther, hun?" Carson began, making Esther nod. Mitch looked up at the adults, making him wonder what will happen. "Do you mind going to the store? Take Kirstin and Scott. Mitchy needs a nap."
Esther nodded as she grabbed her purse. She called the oldest Olusola children and in about five minutes, they left. Carson then glared at Mitch and grabbed his arm. Mitch wanted to fight back, but his arm hurt too much. Carson also looked scary.
"Punishment number two."
Mitch was then brought up to closet and tried to fight but stopped when Carson slapped him. With tears running down his face, Mitch was pushed into the closet and ears it lock, making him cry. Carson let out a laugh and left, leaving the small brunette.
One Hour Later
The door opened, revealing Scott. He tilted his head when he saw his younger brother asleep. He quickly picked up and brought him into the room, not knowing of tonight's events. Carson is an evil mastermind and only Mitch knew it.
~~~
Mitch hoped to never face last night's punishment again. He got out of bed and snuck into the kitchen, getting the phone. He dialed a number that he knew by heart and prayed for it to be picked up. Lucky for him, somebody did pick up.
"Daddy?" He began, hoping to hear his father's voice.
"Yes, Mitchy?" Avi answered, making his youngest son excited. "What's the matter, kiddo?"
"Ummm...Carson's a meanie," Mitch started off, hoping his father didn't think he was lying. It was silent on the other end. "He gave me owies and locked me in the closet. Is that normal?"
"Mitch," Avi began, making Mitch's heart sink. Avi used that kind of voice when he caught one of the kids lying. "That's not nice to say. I have to go now, kiddo. Stay safe, okay?"
"Okay," Mitch responded, his heart breaking. He hung up, sighing loudly. A was quiet until he heard a loud voice call him. Carson. "Yes, Carson?"
"Come here!"
Mitch did as he was told and went into his room. Kirstin and Scott are sitting on Scott's bed, watching Carson walk back and forth, something in his hands. The man glared at Mitch the second he walked in. He then pointed at Mitch's bed, expecting an answer.
"What's wrong with this picture?" Carson demanded and was met with the shrugging of shoulders. The adult backhanded Mitch, making his siblings gasp. They never got slapped by anyone before. "THAT'S NOT AN ANSWER! ANSWER CORRECTLY!"
"I don't know," Mitch answered honestly, tears running down his sweet cheeks. What was wrong with his bed? It was made neatly and his teddy bear was in the center. "It's looks fine to me."
"Incorrect," Carson barked, making all the children jump. He then pointed at a pillow that is tilted at an angle. "The pillow is in the wrong place. You're going to get punished and do you know what the punishment is? This is Mr. Belt. He's going to have fun with you. And your siblings will watch."
Mitch opened his mouth to say something but was quickly thrown to the floor. Carson brought the belt up high and threw down, making one part of the belt hit the youngest Olusola child. Mitch let out a scream as another welt was thrown upon him. This happened for more than five minutes and Carson stopped, smiling evilly. He could Kirstin's tears in the background and sensed Scott's anger. Carson then left, causing his siblings to go to him. He began to cry into their arms, scared of the man their aunt loved.
~~~
The month of June ended and July came. Mitch was forced to wear clothes that covered his tiny body, like sweaters and sweatpants. Carson hit him with every chance he had. Scott and Kirstin received treats and toys and Mitch didn't. They let him have candy, which made him happy but not smile. He forgot the last time he smiled. He wanted to call Avi, but his father will accuse him of lying. He finally decided to call him and waited for his father to pick up; however, a hard stole the phone from his smaller hand and he jumped. It was Carson, who was glaring at him.
"Aunt Esther is going to be gone for half the month," Carson commented evilly, smirking. Mitch tensed. "You forgot to turn off the T.V. Because of that, you will not be allowed to eat for two days. Sorry, kiddo."
Mitch widened his eyes. No food...for two days? Food is supposed to make you survive. How is he going to live and why does Carson hate him so much?
~~~
It was nighttime, day two without food. Mitch's poor stomach hurt and he hoped for more food, but apparently he left the T.V on again and got no food for two days. He sighed as he hugged his tiny stomach and felt his heart break when Carson gave good night hugs to Kirstin and Scott and not him. He cuddled into bed, making his tears his lullaby.
~~~
Another week of abuse.
Another week of no food.
Another week of sweatshirts and sweatpants.
Mitch is tired. His little body could not anything anymore. He's sleepy and malnourished. He forgot the last time he ate. He remembered he had a saltine cracker and that was it. Carson caught him and made him throw it back up. He heard from his siblings that Avi is getting better and that they will come to get them on the last week of summer.
No more Carson.
~~~
The last week of summer came as quick as the first day of summer did. Scott and Kirstin ran to their fathers, excited to see them. Mitch stayed by Esther, suddenly scared. Why were his daddies suddenly...scary? He saw Kevin come up to him but backed off quickly, protecting himself. He saw his dads share a look and Avi decided to go up to him, causing him to back of more. He felt his eyes water and began to cry. All he saw was Carson.
"Mitchy, what's wrong?" Kevin asked sweetly, looking down at his son. He began to cry harder, refusing to answer. "Mitchy, baby, tell me."
"Please no more," Mitch begged, causing Esther and his fathers do share a confused look. "I'm a good boy. Please don't touch me. I'm good."
Kevin stared at his son, not understanding...then it hit him. Somebody was hurting his baby and whoever was hurting him was going to get it.
"Who did this?" Kevin asked angrily, shaking. Mitch looked up, his big brown eyes holding fear.
"Carson."
That was all Mitch had to answer. Kevin let out the loudest scream he could muster. Carson ran out, confused by the sound. He nearly jumped at the taller man standing in front of him.
"How dare you hit my son?" Kevin yelled angrily. Carson got tense, realizing that he got caught. "Why did you put a hand on him, uh?! Why do you think it's ever okay to hit a kid?!"
Carson was left speechless for a second. He quickly turned to Mitch, getting more angry than the boy has ever seen.
"You happy now, kid?! You got your wish! Now you can get spoiled! Now you can get kisses! Never to be hurt again! I'll get my hands on you again! Just you wait!"
Mitch began to cry harder when Carson walked up to him fast. He backed off off, not noticing a small ditch below him. He lost his step, falling back and hitting his head hard, making him semiconscious. Before anybody could get to him, Carson ran and jumped into the ditch, brought his foot up as high as he could, and kicked Mitch's head. The five year old passed out instantly for the sudden pain and Carson kicked him five more times. Kevin then jumped into the ditch himself and tackled Carson, refusing to let him go.
"Esther, call 911! We need an ambulance fast!"
Esther did what she was told and Avi quickly jumped into the ditch. Carson was trying to escape with no avail. Avi looked down at his son and gasped. Blood dripped down his left side, making it look like some painted him. The blood came out fast and refused to stop. Avi ripped off a piece of his shirt and pressed it onto his son's head.
"Visalia Police Department!"
Carson was immediately taken away and an ambulance came the second the abuser was shoved unit the car. An E.M.T got Mitch and gasped at how skinny he was. She quickly him into a gurney, allowing Avi to jump on. Kevin jumped into the car, driving as fast as he could.
~~~
A day has passed since the terrible accident. Mitch has been in an emergency surgery since the minute he got there. Avi and Kevin could not believe their baby got hurt. They only want what's best for him.
"Family of Mitchell Olusola?"
The Olusola family stood up as a female doctor walked up to them, a grim look on her face. Oh no.
"Mitchell has malnutrition,"the doctor began, looking at everyone in the family. They nodded, their heart breaking at the news. "He also has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD, because of the abuse he faced. Also, one more thing. Mitch has suffered from a permanent brain injury. I apologize."
"What is it?" Kirstin asked, afraid of the answer. All these words are so foreign. "He could still talk, right?"
"Yes," the doctor replied, nodding at the young girl. She then sighed sadly. "He has developed Neurogenic Stuttering."
"What's that?" Scott asked instantly, getting scared of the answer. Why did this have to happen to his brother? "Will he die from it?"
"No," the doctor answered, looking at her papers. "Neurogenic Stuttering means that he is unable to pronounce words like you and I. He will have a stutter for the rest of his life. With some help, he will improve. Not entirely, though. I'm sorry."
The family nodded tearfully a the doctor led them to a room. There was little Mitchy, watching Spongebob. A white bandage took over half his face, possibly hiding the scar he got from it. He smiled when he saw his family.
"Hi-i gu-u-uys," he spoke, frowning at his voice. He then looked up at Kevin, confused. "Da-ad-dd-dy, why am I sp-pe-ea-king like this?"
"You have a stutter," Kevin admitted quietly, brushing his hands through his son's hair. Mitch nodded, frowning at the news. "Everything will be okay."
And it was. Yes, there were moments were it got hard, but at the end, everything will be okay.
A/N: I might make a story to this. Also, since you guys are obsessed with innocent Mitch, I might write a one-shot.;) I hope you guys enjoy this.:)
