Thirty-six

Sorry for not posting the past few days! I had my niece over and just didn't have time to update. So, be ready for a TRIPLE update tonight!

Mike sits at a park bench by the coffee shop waiting for Scott to show up.

He pulls out a cigarette and lights it.

With all the stress Mike has been under lately, he's taken up the nasty habit of smoking.

Scott walks up the park bench with two large coffees in his hand.

"Wow! There's so many different flavors! It's freaky. I don't know the half of 'em." Scott says.

He and Mike watch a mother and her young child walk by and it starts to bring back old memories of when Mitch was that young.

He longed to have his little boy again instead of the teenage. He loves him but hates to see him grow up.

"He reminds you of Mitch, doesn't he?" Scott asks.

Mike nods with a smile on his face.

"He has to be scary, my fierce little boy. Just like his mom. Smart and beautiful. No need to be like anyone else." Mike says as he starts to cry.

He wipes the tears from his eyes and that's another puff of his cigarette.

"The thing is I was a...I was a troubled kid too. I was kind of like you, Scott. I didn't hold out too much hope for myself. Not many other people did either. It was a total shock to everyone, including myself, when I became a doctor. But somehow I was given this amazing gift of family." Mike explains in tears to Scott.

Mike takes one last puff of his cigarette before throwing it on the ground and putting his face in his hands.

Scott just stares at him not knowing what to say.

He was taken aback by Mike's confession.

"Hey, it's gonna be okay, Dr. Grassi." Scott says.

"I'm sorry. Oh, God. I'm sorry, Scott."

"Nicki? Nicki?" Connie calls out.

She walks into Nicole's room and Nicole turns her head away from his mother has she is still mad about the fight they had yesterday.

"Well, where's your costume?" Connie asks.

"I'm not trick-or-treating this year. I'm too old." Nicole says.

"It's Halloween! Everyone gets a chance to be someone else! Let their hair down for a while. I thought you wanted to be a pretty girl." Connie says.

Nicole smiles a little and looks at the ground.

Connie pulls out a large paper bag and pulls a large mask out of it.

She shows her the mask as it looks like a pretty girl with long red hair like hers and a face full of makeup too.

Nicole couldn't be more excited about the gift from her mother.

"Ta-da."

Nicole takes the mask from Connie and examines it.

"See, now you don't have to worry about makeup or anything like that." Connie says brushing Nicole's hair back.

Nicole blushes and tries not to smile.

"Come one! Let me see you smile. Come on, little honey bear! Let me see you smile." Connie says.

Nicole laughs as Connie knocks her down on the bed in a big hug.

"Okay. Let's go see if mama's got any clothes that'll fit you." Connie says.

Connie takes her daughters hand and leads her to her closet with all of her nice dresses.

Mike checks himself out in the mirror and sees how his vampire costume looks on him.

He then notices that there is something missing from his costume.
Have you seen my...my fangs?" He asks Nel.

She walks them over to him and he sees that she is also dressed up as a vampire as well.

"Fangs a lot." Mike jokes.

Nel shuts the her jewelry box and looks at him in anger.

"Come on, sweetie. You're the one who wanted to do this. Can you at least try to enjoy it?" Mike says.

"How's Isabel?"

"What?"

"I swear to Christ, Mike."

Nel shakes her head and Mike watches to see what she's going to say next.

"I told you if you lied to me one more time, that we're done." Nel says.

Mike sighs.

"I can't do this. I can't do it." Nel says walking out of their bedroom.

"Nel. Nel?"

"I read through the phone bills! Her number is on there twenty times! More." Nel says.

"Yeah. Because I don't answer. And when she does get me, I tell her not to call back." Mike explains.

"Did you see her in Texas?" Nel asks.

"Nel, no! She keeps calling, harassing me. I told her I'd call the police if she didn't stop." He says.

"And did she?"

"Yeah."

Mike nods his head and  stares down Nel as she is almost in tears.

"She won't be calling back." Mike says.

"Well, she might, because I left her a message." Nel says.

Mike sighs and looks at the ground.

"Well, I wouldn't expect a call back. I was pretty forceful." Mike says walking towards Nel.

Nel nods trying to hold back tears.

"I'm sorry I didn't tell you. But...after everything that happened, after the break-in I- I don't want to add more stress. Hey, you had every right to react exactly the way you did. But believe me. Isabel is over." Mike explains.

Just as Nel was about to say sorry for overreacting, Mike's phone rings.

"It's Isabel."
